Hahaha, awesome: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

I'm sitting here playing Diablo II and watching Cinematech on G4 TechTV, and out of the blue they start showing an old video of a game on the Genesis called Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.

I must know: who here has owned this beast? How does it play? IS THE MIDI MUSIC SUPER BADASS!? Oh no, why are the gangsters shooting at michael and why is he throwing the powder from his face at them!?

Here is MobyGames site dedicated to this badass game

If only games today could be this cool.

Moonwalker is pretty much based on the Micheal Jackson movie. Mr. Big has kidnapped the children and has nasty things in store for them, like drugging them and making them slaves. It's up to Michael to use his powers and save his little friends.

MJ can jump, throw magical stars and dance to counter his opponents as he looks for the hidden children. Stages come in shape of some of MJ's videos like streets and graveyards. There are also caves and a final showdown in space as a robot.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Used to play it all the time. The dogs would dance with you on the graveyard level. Occasionally Michael transformed into a super robot if you could catch a falling comet for a less than spectacular Cybernator-esque destruction spree. I always loved the Smooth Criminal level tho.

The arcade game was a 3p simultaneous isometric beat em up. It had a dance button too.

I put a lot of quarters into that game in the arcade. The Smooth Criminal stage was awesome.

Mr. Big was played by Joe Pesci in the Moonwalker movie, in case you didn't remember.

It's actually a pretty good game. Arcade version's a bit boring, though.

It's the quick animations between stages in the Genesis version that make it perfect.

The arecade game was pretty bad ass. I had it on the Genesis. It wasn't bad at all, from what I remember.

It's actually a really good game. The gameplay is good, the MIDI music is decent and the camp value is off the charts. The idea of having Michael Jackson 'rescuing' tied up children just doesn't seem as innocent now...

I still have it. I have around ~50 games for my Megadrive. Moonwalker is one of my favorites. I think its mostly the kick ass music....

"MICHAEL!" :lol

I rented it and borrowed it from friends. I loved the Thriller stage most, where you could make all the zombies dance with you. :lol

Actually, the game was really good IMO. It didn't hurt that I liked his music too, but the actual game was cool and original enough. I loved that you could translate into a robot sometimes, and the different attacks were fun as well.

I recall trying out the arcade game briefly, and that was good as well.

The Gensis one was a sidescroller... The arcade was isometric.

I loved how they both let you play with Bubbles the Chimp.

That was the first game I ever actually rented. A true classic with much associated nostalgia.

And PAL territories got the shaft with the name 'Megadrive'. Genesis is so much cooler.

This game rocked! Dancing with Zombies, throwing your hat to slice up enemies, collecting tied up little children! And then after every stage you'd blast off in some supercar.

I'll never understand why it and its arcade counterpart were made (and no, I am not going by the "omg he's a pedophile" line of thinking that many others in this thread are), but I remember them being decently playable games

You'll never understand? Dude, they made a game based on Home Improvement. There's no stopping those that have the passion.

The game is alot of fun. I always played it on a rental back in the day. I picked it up a year ago and finally beat it,the Michael vs. UFO stages towards the end were funny as hell. Considering that both are aliens to begin with.

I used to play the hell out of this game.

I played so much I managed to discover all the'secret' locations for the magic comet that could turn you into a robot.

It was a really popular game back then, makes me wonder how old the topic starter :lol

We owned this game and it kicked so much ass. I always got near the end, but the final boss ALWAYs killed me. I finally beat it a few months ago on my xbox ;) but the only thing that I couldn't remember was where those damned shooting stars were. This game rocked just like MJ did back in the day.

I owned the Genesis game when it came out. I have the Genesis rom as well as the arcade rom on my computer. i play both every now & then. the music rocks.

There is also a Moon Walker home computer game (Amiga, Commodore 64, Spectrum, etc).
I remember that one too, and it was pretty damn crappy. Arcade version was a really fun game, I remember that being a very popular machine.

Megadrive sounds much cooler. Sounds like a transformer.

I remember the one at the graveyard! I think on the second stage, you walked a bit and then jumped up on a tombstone. I wonder if I'm still right on that one? It's still somehow etched into my mind...:P

I believe you had to grab a certain kid first and then stand on the right spot short after, but Im not sure. It's being a while.

I think I still remember the location of few of those shooting starts. For example in the parking lot in the first stage you had to go all the way up and jump on top of the left (or was that the right?) elevator.

I don't really think this is a very obscure game. I played this as a little kid in an arcade, and on the Genesis and Game Gear. Are you young?

I guess 20 is considered young. Still, I never even heard of this game back in the day. Maybe I did and forgot. I was never a fan of Michael Jackson anyway, so I probably didn't pay much attention to his video game exploits back then.

Makes sense I played it in 3rd grade and your 3 years younger.

I remember being super disappointed when I bought the Genesis version and it was absolutely nothing like the arcade game that I had come to know and love. In retrospect, I was a tard. The arcade version is a half-assed beat-em-up where you only have like 1 attack and a special move. So many of the enemies have ranged attacks that it's impossible to really stay alive, and the result is a shallow quarter muncher with a fruity theme.

The Genesis game was pretty fun, though I think if I played it today I wouldn't be very impressed.

Now this is wierd...I was a raging Segaholic back in the day, and I never considered this game to be anything more then medicore. Sure, I borrowed it off someone, played it a few times, listened to the soundtest through my headphones. But it was hardly Revenge of Shinobi.

The arcade version was a pretty decent game from what I remember though...think I've got the rom buried somewhere in my Mame folder.

Both versions of Moonwalker were awesome. Sooo many new meanings to that movie and game in light of the current court situation.
