Damn, 5 sets? (Or more?) I can see this match going down to the final episode!
Yeah, and I think we can take a minute to appreciate that even if there is one episode in the end for the aftermath, there's still 8 full episodes of this match. For reference, Aoba Johsai x Karasuno's second match in the end of the second season took 5 episodes. And it didn't have a whole episode dedicated to build the match, like this one has. So it's essentialy 9 episodes x 5 episodes (or 10x6, if we count the aftermath).
It's the finals, it's meant to be big, and everything they made in this episode reflect that.
Starting with the opening sequence with the mountain they have to surpass (and the parallel Hinata makes with the net being a really high wall, before the opening itself) turining into a white bird (Shiratorizawa's symbol) with Wakatoshi (also Shiratorizawa's symbol) on it.
Even the lyrics in this part (and mostly the melody) feel like they're building to something.
Loose translation: "To ignite all cells in my body, I take a deep breath, sacrifice sweat and blood, and turn this longing into an achievement"
Then there's the stadium, full with TV channels covering the event. And various people related somehow to Karasuno show up to raise the stakes. The girls from the female team (that holds one of the best scenes in this show, the side-by-side match with the male team), Hinata's friends from his old school, Tanaka's sister, Tsukishima's brother, Karasuno's alumni (including Yamaguchi's mentor), and even one old dude that used to go to Karasuno's matches.
And then the stadium that was relatively empty gets a significant crowd when the match's about to start.
For the introductions, I said before that I didn't remember then on the manga, and the reason is simple: they're not there.
One could argue that they created it only to elongate the episode, and while I'd agree with that, it's not a bad thing. They're great (even counting with some inserts of personality, mostly with Tanaka's introduction), they build the hype and they managed to stretch the episode to end where it should've: the first point of the match. We only get to see Daichi serve, everything else was from Shiratorizawa, from the flawless reception, setting and spiking and ending making clear that this team is the real deal.
Everything is on a grander scale, it's bigger, better, and like I said before, it's going to be epic. I really couldn't ask for a better setup episode.
