Halo 2 expansion pack coming ? *GAF explodes*

What's to like about Midship? Maybe the first minute, before everything turns into a retarded dual-plasma spamfest. Okay for Team Slayer -- shit for everything else.

Well, From what I see of the situation, I think people are overreacting a bit. From what I see so far, the expansion pack will be a retail release. If it's a retail release, while at the same time being release gradually on XBox Live for free, I think that it's more of an attempt from MS to satisfy both Live and non-Live gamers while making a little extra money on the side. Live gamers have the choice to wait and download the content for free as part of their live subscription, or buy the expansion from retail to get the maps early. Meanwhile, non-live gamers will still be able to get the content. If it is more of a case of MS offering options for people who can't get live, but would still like to pay for the content, then I say MS should go for it.

Because they don't want the whole industry to go this route, and they know that if one company demonstrates that they can turn a profit with this crap, the rest will follow the scent of money and start pushing similar schemes until it becomes the new standard. :p

Please, not every game has the pull of Halo,so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I still don't see the big deal, for serious Halo players the money won't be a problem, you don't want to pay?Fine, just get 2 free maps every month! And besides,it's all just speculation at this point anyways.

Assault/Shotgun CTF/Shotgun Slayer/Regular Deathmatch/TS

The map is just so damn good,it combines all of the best elements of the game with no snipe camping,it's awesome and IMO is the best map to truly test someones ability at the game.

Read the thread:

The reported 4-month wait is the problem. Also, if these are online maps only, then everyone could download it for free. Online seems more likely to me, because otherwise, you'd have to get involved back into the story.

So the thread claims that the Expansion pack will release first. Since when does someone posting in the thread considered the truth. What I see is 2 links. One to a french site. One to xbox.com Korea that has April and May releases along with coming soon (After may releases). www.bungie.net has made it pretty clear that Halo 2 DLC is coming up in the next couple of weeks (Not needing to wait until after May). So sounds like to me a bunch of people wanting to bitch and moan at Bungie and MS.

Pfft, crazy king and classic CTF on midship > all. Lockout probably is my favourite tho.

So people that already pay for XBOX live get the new maps for free. If you dont subscribe to XBOX Live you need to pay for them.

Tell me what is wrong with this?

Nope, nothing is wrong with this. At all. People bought Halo 2 for $50 (or whatever). It was a complete game, just like Devil May Cry 3 and Gran Turismo 4 and Metroid Prime 2. Now, they're releasing extra content for Halo 2 for a fee, or free eventually assuming you have XBL.

What is the fuckin' problem?

Don't want extra maps? DON'T BUY 'EM! OR WAIT UNTIL THEY'RE FREE! I bought Halo 2. I don't want to buy extra maps, so I'm not going to. Pretty simple. My God, you crybabies.

Seriously, if you don't play Halo 2 online or gave up it (probably tired of losing/"getting cheated") don't worry the maps aren't for you, so don't spend your money, or, perhaps more appropriately, your allowance on it.

No, I still do play all the time - custom MLG games with friends. It's just annoying that this has gone on for so long. I also love Blizzard and seeing the difference in how Blizzard reacts to cheating and fixes their ladder as well as releasing additional content and comparing it to Bungie is more than a little disheartening.

I have no problem with this if the pricing is fair and if the cheating is fixed over xbl for free. I'm just pissed to see 8 maps for somewhere near $30 and no mention of cheating / bugfixing.

Edit - I'm also pissed that they're going to be charging so much because I remember reading interviews with members of Bungie commenting that they had a lot of old maps ported over to Halo 2 but they just didn't have the time to properly balance and create upgraded textures for them, and now they're going to sell them for damn near $30

Yeah if everyone starts with a BR and you don't whore the sword all game then it might be the best map to test someone's skill. But with regular Bungie weapon start and Super Fun Radar it's the team that gets the shotgun, sword, carb, two BRs and the PP wins.

I doubt it's true though, like Scoot said it would fuck up matchmaking and stuff...

What's there to fuck up? People with newer maps can matchmake with other people with the newer maps. And it'll all be randomized, sometimes people with the newer maps, will instead connect to people without them and play on the older maps. Seems pretty damn simple to me.

Microsoft and Bungie can piss OFF with this bullshit business model.
The more and more I see where Microsoft is heading with "premium" content and the "HD era", the more and more I'm re-thinking my purchase of an Xbox 360.

I guess my main complaint would be that probably not alot of people will buy them,so how much actual use would you get out of them from MM?

All of this being said, you can certainly make a similiar argument with Sony regarding SOCOM 2 (having to buy the OPM's) and possibly GT4, if they re-release it with an online expansion.

With SOCOM, it was ignorance in that they didn't design the online code to be able to download a map through the network, only off a disc. Not really excusable in my book

With GT4, it would need to support the hard drive, which it doesn't, and it's not online enabled, so you can't download it anyway. But given that this was promised for over a year, again there are no valid excuses.

I don't fault Microsoft for trying to make a buck. A Halo 2.5 could and should sell well. The only issue is that "reportedly" in 4 months, what you paid for will be free, and they have the ability to download it to your XBox for free, but decided not to. It just seems to me to be raw way to treat your fans with this 4 month "torture or cash" option.

I'll wait for an offical word from MS before I'll believe this fully or condemn them for it. It would be shitty for them to release maps at a premium price, then give 'em away down the line, but as it's already been said, you don't have to buy 'em if you don't want to.

Would this be Halo 2 : Service Pack 1?

I guess people will take any opportunity to hate on something as great as HALO 2. :) The fact that it won game of the year from more than a few publications didnt help things. This has been building up for a while, its good that they can let it out now.

Damn straight! And when you buy tickets to a baseball game, you should get a free hat, too!

What part of extra content are people having a hard time understanding?

As well, doesn't the scenario of games being shortened or thinned out so they can make money in the premium (downloadable) content model actually have to start happening to some degree before people start complaining about it?

Apparently not.

Geez you make it sound so simple for one team to actually accomplish all of that.

This is why I hate online gaming.. because I knew what it would lead to.

first, i'd suggest people hold off with the waterfalls untill we know exactly what this expansion entails and how it will be distributed, officially

iirc, bungie has always said that any dlc would be free to live users (i could provide quotes). theyy've also said that they were working on a way to provide the dlc to those without live...

this could be just a retail disc "expansion" sold to those without live...

makes the most sense to me. either way, we'll see shortly. no sense bitching till we know what we're bitching about.

by the way, i'm am fucking THRILLED that it appears to be 8 maps.... i was expecting 3 honestly. 8 maps is awesome.

The fact that it won any GOTY awards is astonishing. The game is incomplete, buggy and the story is awful and ridden with plot holes.

as for the topic of the thread, I'm not sure about 2 a month. Frankie did mention that they were working on a few fixes for those who don't have XBL that wanted the DLC maps. This could be it. But if 2 a month of XBL is true, I will be severely pissed. Did I wait for almost 5 months now just so I can get 2 maps per month for 4 months? (An obvious ploy to get gamers to play it longer) HELL NO. Give me my damn maps now.

The perceived value is just not the same. I can go play Half-Life now on PC and download a whole mess of maps FOR FREE. It just doesn't sit well with me and other gamers that we have to PAY near $30 for some damn maps, and add that to the fact that they would hold it back from us so we can be tempted to buy it for 4 months.

It's just seems so fucking greedy and evil.

I know it's a business, but they need to find an alternative solution IMO.

Maybe increase the Xbox Live fee to a certain amount and we can download all premium content for free? I don't know, it's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's better solutions.

:lol You're just pissed that so many people liked Halo 2 and justifiably awarded it as their GOTY, despite your dissatisfaction. Well, guess what? The world doesn't revolve around you.

Give me my damn maps now.

They don't have to give your whiney ass shit.

You're right, I did sound whiny when I said give me them now, I apologize for that. But you're going to tell me that I'm part of a minority when I say that Halo 2 doesn't deserve GOTY? Come on now...

Well yes you are the minority (Just so happens that minorities usually squeak the loudest)

No game ever has "the majority" of people thinking that it should be GOTY.

jesus fuck why must every Halo 2 thread devolve into some fanboy GOTY pissing contest. *Wah wah (insert favorite game) didn't win GOTY and now I'm gonna go cry about it on GAF*. Christ people - grow up and get over it.

First off, we don't know all the facts so people should stop acting like this thing is set in stone. WAIT FOR THE DETAILS BEFORE BREAKING OUT THE PITCHFORKS!

Secondly, has Microsoft done anything to really mistreat it's Xbox customer base in any way this generation??? Have they done anything unfair??? I think they've gone out of their way to be fair in nearly every way possible. Then why does everyone all of a sudden feel that MS/Bungie is gonna bend them over and pound away?

HALO 2 = GOTY!! The best fps ive ever played. Its simplicity is what makes it so great. Two weapons and some grenades is far better than having to manage the tons of weapons, none of them balanced, and items in other FPS's. It also leads to far more strategy and planning than you find in any other fps. The story was good too. Whats so hard for the haters to understand? Yes I beat half life 2, halo 2 is just a better game IMO. Its funny that you cant even admit it should have been in contention for GOTY. Take away the xbox live aspect of it and its still game of the year as far as im concerned.

If this is true....wow. Such content should be totally free (i.e. free upfront), especially given the relatively small number of maps. In the context of what Allard was talking about with the future of Live, I'd really be hesitant about buying games with the prospect of them holding content over for maps like that, and subsequently charging for them. I guess it's a prelude of things to come.

My local Blockbuster will be getting a lot of trade from me next gen :( I'll need to be more sure than ever that there's enough in there to justify a full purchase.

I know they're supposedly releasing them in a staggered fashion, free - to be honest, I'd be happy if they just left it at that. Charging the impatient is just a little cynical, especially when they know how many people will want more than 2 maps straight away (again, because of the relatively small number of maps in the "finished" game).

/rant

Why does this surprise anyone? They've already done this with Mechassault 2. People who bought the Collectors Edition for some extra coinage had the exclusive maps for a short while earlier.

"Breaking out the pitchforks" is the only way to get any comments out of Bungie. Unless there is a furor in the fan community (like with the cheating and widescreen TV problems), they clam up about their problems. So I say to you all -- Keep going nuts!
My local Blockbuster will be getting a lot of trade from me next gen
Come to think of it...if the expansion disk just downloads some new maps to the HD, what's to stop you from splitting the cost with some friends and just sharing? Or renting it once from Blockbuster?

They could put the entire multiplayer game on the disc and force you to play off just the expansion disc, but then you risk people buying that instead of the $50 proper edition.

OTOH, a low-cost multiplayer-only version might actually have a good market for it. Seems like when we were putting LAN parties together, coming up with additional copies of Halo 1 tended to be the hardest thing...

Calm down guys. Let's just do the smart thing and not buy them.

Get MGS to pull a MA2 on the community. :D

Fuck LE's and fuck DLC's.

MS will cash in on this -- especially if they don't tell the public that they will be available free after awhile.

You know....fuck this gameplan. This is like paying for limited editions and getting the "extra content" in a couple months. And apparently it's all a set up for the upcoming Xbox LIVE service where I can be nickle and dimed for content that you know won't be included in games on purpose. PLEASE GOD DON'T LET THE OTHER COMPANIES USE THIS PLAN. I'm not a Xbox hater by any means, but fuck this whole eBay in my games vision. I'm filled with hatred for it.

I'm with you.

I am a supporter of the market place business model but I side with those that say this is wrong. $30 is too much for only 8 maps and it is wrong to charge for the content and then release it for free.

I don't see the problem either. A small percentage of Xbox owners use LIVE. Might as well make a buck off the tons of LIVE'less gamers that bought Halo 2 by offering this disk, and might as well make some more for the people that slept outside EB pre-launch with www.ilovebees.com tatooed to their ass and can't wait a few months for all the content.

All the while, give xbox owners without LIVE the choice of paying $20-30 for new Halo2 content, or $70 for a subscription that will eventually include all the content. Makes perfect sense. GAF am cry but Donald Trump am proud.

At least you don't have to pay ~$15 for 3 OPM issues if you wanted THREE extra Socom 2 maps...

I still don't like this 'expansion pack' though. Unless they give us new weapons and shit

I think 20 is a bit pricey. I'd pay $10 and feel like I got a pretty good deal though.

edit: of course you could always go halfs with a friend and use one disc to install the 8 maps on both of your Xboxes. The download will probably be pretty damn big.

WTF... is Halo 2 on Xbox a PC game now? Charging for expansions to Halo 2 is retarted considering it cost them peanuts (they can foot the bill of staff costs) to make new maps and put them on Xbox live for download.

As if Bungie didn't make enough money off people already with Halo 2, now they're charging the poor saps without broadband! :lol

I'd recomend you save your money and buy Phantom Dust.

It's funny to see all the free 1st-party content available after release for PC games like HL2 and especially UT2k4, and then seeing this (if it's true).
