Halo 2 Multiplayer Strategies Thread

Come ye, friends, and share your Halo 2 multiplayer strategies.

* Warthog in CTF - Many players in CTF fail to guard their Warthog as they make a run for your flag. A few well-placed grenades will surely cancel their quick getaway. Or you could steal it.

* If you are being attacked and don't know where it's coming from, HIDE BEHIND COVER immediately! Trying to find your attacker and counterattacking him is a sure way to get killed, since he already has lowered your shields.

* Ghost Splattering - When planning to run over a victim, make it look like you're about to speed boost. They'll jump to avoid it. THEN hit speed boost and splatter the poor bastard as he is coming down.

* Ghost stealing - Hug a wall or some kind of cover. When they crash into it while trying to run you over, steal it.

* Against sword/shotgun - Run straight back (do NOT circle strafe!) and keep firing. They'll go down easily if you have enough running room.

* Flag speed running - Repeatedly throw and pick up the flag as you run with it. Gives you a slight speed bonus.

* Crouch to avoid radar detection

* Good dual-wield combos:
- SMG + Plasma Rifle
- SMG + Magnum (use headshots)
- 2x Plasma Rifle
- SMG + Plasma Pistol (charged shot to take their shields out, then SMG 'em)

CTF: While on defense (in certain maps), grab the banshee and park it right on top of your flag. No one from the opposing team can grab the flag untill they move that banshee, gives you extra seconds to kill the mofu, and makes life a little more difficult for the offense.

Assault: On offense, the only way you'll be able to plant that bomb is if you overwhelm the defense with pure numbers. Stick with your whole team, and attack as one.

Bumping the flag along works best on smaller maps like Colossus where they can find you quickly. But beware throwing it in CTF games where flag recovery requires only that the team touch it.

It also gives a bit of extra distance when you're definitely going to die.

'Tis also effective when you're under attack, but your teammates are there and fighting your attackers. Lets you get out of the situation a little faster.

* Try throwing the flag to your teammates who are in a far away position. Works well in bases with windows or on the edge of Colossus's cliff.

That is just the dumbest 'tip' I have ever heard. Regardless if they can find you easily or not on the map, that is going to point them to EXACTLY where you are and EXACTLY where you are going; i.e. cover/blocks/pillars are useless. You have no chance if they are halfway decent or you are a decent clip from your base.

I only throw the flag if none of my teammates are trying to protect me and i have to defend myself. (Which happens alot in Optimatch Team Skirmish....Grrr...idiots)

Nothing infuriates me more than seeing my brother sneak up behind a person and then try and kill them with the SMG. Use the fucking gunbuck people, it's there for a reason!

Along the same lines, YOU ARE NOT DEFENSELESS WHEN YOU HAVE THE ODDBALL OR THE FLAG. Run up to them and melee their asses to hell. With the flag or the skull in hand, you get a slight bonus to the damage that you can deal.

Im thinking of switching up the sensitivity. I have had it at default 3 ever since i got it. I forgot about it a few times. been meaning to change it. What do you guys feel has been the best most efficient sensitivity. I heard someone say i think 6 but that was just 1 guy.

And yes in those times when you just want a second weapon... the plasma pistol charged shot to take out shields as SMG finishes them off can be very useful in tight times. I was amazed at how it worked out for me actually. But you gotta be sure you hit the guy. If you miss it can be certian death. The charged shot is crucial.

I am still getting a hang of things. I will try out the pistol + SMG comboa bit more later on when i get the chance. I have been reluctant to try it out in my earlier matches. Tonight I tried it out and it was pretty powerful. I was trying to aim at upper body or possibly head area. Pretty tasty and very satisfying.

If you're in a gametype that calls for alternating rounds of defense and offense, when on the defense round...by all means, stay in the area and fucking defend. I'm tired of idiots who decide that objective defense is not cool and go off fucking around in the other team's base...

Generally, bringing an Energy Sword into the defender's base is a bad idea...it's better-suited for them and not the attacking team.

When playing 1-flag CTF on Zanzibar and you've just gotten the flag, but are facing death in the flag area while unsupported...jump toward the gate if it's still down. You have a better than average chance of having the flag slip through to the outside once you've died giving your teammates the chance to grab it.

Communicate positions of the flag/bomb/oddball with clarity.

If you don't know where the bomb is on Assault, tell everyone to defend the score point immediately.

I'd like to add the plasma rifle + smg as a viable combo, it may not strip shields as fast as a charged pistol shot but the rifle is the next best thing and protects against the possibility of the charged shot missing (which leaves you screwed) the SMG then quickly finishes off an unshielded foe.

On Zanzibaar when attacking it's easiest if one person goes right and grabs the camo, drops the bridge and sneaks in to open the gate (if you're playing a decent team, drop off the bridge and sneak round the back for the last bit) If you pick up the shotgun too, you might find youself clearing out the whole base. If you cant clear the base dont bother getting the flag untill you've got some back up.

When defending (just to get you all doing the same thing) its a good idea to grab the camo, shotgun and the sword as you can get there a little faster (but few try), it's pretty hard to stop the sword in the map room in zanzibaar.

In 4 person team territories, dont bother going after all three objectives, you cant guard them all effectively and you'll end up losing at least 2. When you have 2, hold them.

In Neutral assualt if your team has the bomb you will see the icon next to one of your teammates, if you cant see that then the enemy has the bomb so get the fuck back to your base. Never try and search out the bomb holder, its just wasting valuable time they could be using to plant the bomb.

Team king of the hill. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT THROW GRENADES WHEN YOU ARE DEFENDING THE HILL WITH YOUR TEAM. They are great for attacking it though, so id recommend staying with one weapon and grenades untill you've cleared the hill, then picking up a downed enemies weapon to protect it.

I dont really recommend running straight back against the sword as recommended earlier, it'll just make it easier for the opponent to lock on, it's easier on maps like ivory tower where theres lots of pillars to dodge behind. I try to avoid the sword guy unless i have a distinct advantage (like a plasma grenade on his face).

Running backward be the same speed as running forward. Sword guy will gain no ground on you while you pump him with bullets. Just be wary of walls, columns and other potential snags.

In fact, you can avoid the fatal lunge if he just barely gets a lock on. Full speed in reverse. He'll end up stabbing just in front of you.

'Course, if you run across sword man at close range, you're screwed unless he's incompetent.

All the same with shotguns. Terrible damage at any range other than point-blank. SMG + Plasma wins every time.

- pistols fucking rock. use em.

- in single bomb assualt, if you dont see the goddamned icon for the bomb (either as it freely sitting on the ground, or a teammate has it) that means the other team is in posession. fucking protect the base. play defensively! you wouldnt beleiev how many retards dont know how to play assualt properly... only go on offense when you have the fucking bomb.

- Jump continuously when running with the flag. If you're killed in midair (and going in the right direction) the flag can gain quite a bit of extra distance.

- Always carry plasma grenades. If you find yourself head to head with a sword wielding foe and there's not a lot of room to move around (most of the time there simply isn't enough room to backpedal until they're dead) at the very least you can stick his ass before you die. Plus you never know when a vehicle will come barrelling around a corner.

- To go along with the above, learn the "jump 'n' stick". Ghost coming right at you? Jump his charge and plant a plasma on him as he passes under you.

Same with the bomb in Assault games. I've clobbered and killed so many people with the bomb it's actually kinda funny.

One time Demigod Mac used a teammate as a human shield when arming the bomb under fire. It worked!

* Assault - if your first attack fails and the bomb's in their base, wait a bit and it'll respawn momentarily in your base. No need to run for their base only to have it respawn way back in yours! And keep those teammates on a leash 'till it's time.

Sometimes the best strategy is to rush in as a group though. No one is carrying the bomb so you aren't down a man in the attempt to secure the bomb point. The little bar underneath the bomb/flag icon indicates how soon the objective will respawn so plan your actions accordingly.

Someone did that to me on Zanzibar last night. A complete pain in the ass when your on offence!

Yeah, I always park the banshee on top of the flag when playing headlong. Works wonders.

any strats for minor assault on coagulation?

the best one i've used so far is get someone to fly the banshee and have the bomb guy sit on top of it and fly in through the top.

Coagulation is the huge map...Burial Mounds is the one with the teleport to the rear of the base :P

Hmm, tips for minor assault...get your team on the ghost/banshee/warthog quick and grab the bomb first :P Rocket launcher too

I played Halo 2 for the first time ever yesterday, 1v1 w/ a friend who played multiplayer a lot. I won 25 to 11

Stratagy: Grab overshield and that sword-thingie and just slash their face. They keep their distance? Grenades.

Counter: Shoot a rocket at them at close range...suicide. Then run to the death point to grab the sword before he gets it back.

:lol good advice

Anyone able to get on top of the Ring Structure on Zanzibar? I've come close a few times, but I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time trying to get up there.

How about tips for flag-carriers when they are stranded (the other team has your flag so it's impossible to score)?

Most people seem to think it's a great idea to run back to your base and sit beside the flag-deposit spot but geez, it seems like that never works out. The other team will always storm in with a ton of grenade chucking and take you out and return the flag. Sure, it helps if you have a bunch of people defending you, but if everyone sits in there on defense then how are you ever going to get your flag back?

In Beaver Creek, jumping up on the roof of the base seems to work out much better. Smarter teams will expect this as a hiding place, but at least you'll be able to jump down inside the base if you get flushed out. What are the good hiding spots on other maps?

yea, i think bungie should add another rocket launcher to coag...cause its hard to stop the warthog if someone good is driving when the 2 or 3 people in it have the rocket launcher on them.

only way to stop them is with a very good sniper, which isnt likely to be on ur team unless your doing a clan match.

peace

On Coag you get teleported to a spot where getting to the rear is easy and painless.

Not quite AT the rear, but easy access. Especially with mates backing you up.

Nothing like hanging on the edge while watching the other team run at your base as if you're making a direct assault....

thats a shitty counter cause you could spawn far away while they spawn near.

head to head is fuckin broken anyway.

there are more ways to counter the sword than one would think, but it just takes alot more skill and work than using the sword (im speaking specifically about 1v1........cause its alot easier to stop a sword user in bigger maps/team games).

<edit>
but here are some 1v1 tips on stopping the sword i guess...even tho its difficult...and theres no way to stop a sword user who is crouching so u cant see him on the radar then when u run by him, he just slashes you. (which happens alot in 1v1...."OOH IM SO GOOD CAUSE I CROUCH WALK EVERYWHERE!")

1.of course the backing up and shooting them. (which sucks arse on 1v1 maps)

2.having the charge gun, charging and taking out thier shield while u have the magnum in ur other hand and giving them a head shot right after u take out thier shield with the charge (again....takes lots of skill and if u miss either...ur fucked)

3.shotgun close range at the right moment (if they are in front of you, during thier lunge but before the lunge hits you which is very hard to do and requires precise timing or of course running up on either side of them and being POINT BLANK up close shooting them)

4.and of course the plasma grenade which also takes skill to aim and hit them with it.

5. sniping them. that is if they arent near u and u are at a location that has a good view of the map without ur back being vulnerable.

most of those require skill and usually you have a good chance of screwing them up so your still gonna get owned by the sword.

Bungie needs to fix 1v1...at least get rid of that damn timer.

peace

I know it's a shitty counter, but that's what my friend kept doing to me at oh...kill count 18vs8 and it got annoying to the point that I just used my guns for a while.

Usually when he got the sword I just used clever ways to get around and behind him to shoot.

Like I would find him, have him chase me up some ramp...then I would jump off...and while he gets his barrings I'd get up behind him. Or I'd have him chase me without him realizing I'm on my way to get an overshield to defend myself while I shot him in the face with a shotgun. Or I would have him chase me...I throw a grenade a couple of feet ahead of me...make a sharp turn....he runs over the grenade.

but the sword + overshield is probably the most cheapest combo ever to grace FPS multiplayer gaming.

I don't think head-to-head works at all. It is too easy for someone to grab the most powerful weapon, dominate for a while, and then hide until the timer runs out. I don't see why there is a timer for head-to-head anyway -- force people to play until 15-25 kills. That way there isn't anything to be gained by hiding, and both opponents have to seek each other out.

Uhhhh, I dunno. Quad damage + chaingun or rocket launcher was much more nasty. At least the sword requires that you be relatively close to an opponent. The sword is not that hard to dodge if you are in an open space. Seems like all you have to do is strafe constantly (not circle strafe though)

My Tip of the day!!!

~ Don't get shot! :D

But seriously... what is everyone favorite weapon?

Right now... I find myself going straight for the shot gun for those UP CLOSE 1 to 2 shot kills. :D

Don't jump if you're under attack from a battle or sniper rifle at a distance. Makes a nice predictable arc for them to shoot you with.

Find cover, fast.

Plasma Pistol + SMG / Magnum is bread and butter. Just make sure you don't miss.

But I find myself using Plasma Rifle + SMG the most. Most efficient, might not kill as fast as PP+SMG, but it's a bit safer as the PR doesn't overheat as fast.

Also, in the levels with the Banshees, I like to shoot the wings off before I hop in because it eliminates the 'vapor light trails' and makes it harder for an enemy to locate you.

If an enemy is trying to hijack your Banshee, use A + over to roll him off or the other combination where do you a flip in the air.

More nasty yes, especially in multi-deathmatch, but at least the quad will time out after a few seconds. Overshield + sword can last for ages.

That's how we played. Not sure how it is online, but we just made a normal match w/ 2 people -- kill count = 25.

zanzibar defense

someone gets the rocket and the other guy gets the sword, other guy gets the sniper rifle from the right and the remaining guy can grab the shotgun and make it to the camo before offense can. rockets should take out the vehicles and the sniper should be able to get a runner across the top or open area (watch out for the cave entrance where the battle rifle is and destroy the gas cansiters if you are going to stand there) , invisible guy should be able to take anyone else going for camo and the sword dude can run back and cover the bomb spot.

for bomb mode it's extremely important to have someone always eyes on the bomb spot.

Scoring on bomb mode for zanzibar if the bomb carrier can get the camo, go across throught the windmill and make the jump, then crouch walk to the switch to open the door if your team mates can get in there and distract then you can drop and plant the bomb. they may not even see you. I have literally done that right in front of a guy.

im sure someone already said this...but you can kill anyone with the flag with just 2 hits. So dont be affraid to charge someone with it. Ive done this 2 times, where Ive killed the flag carrier for the other team (while returning to my base), returned the flag and scored. ha

oh..and use the team talk button all the time!!!. It's funny hearing the other team talk about what they're going to do when your near them.

If you're about to die in a duel, chunk a grenade at your feet ahead of time. You have a chance of taking your attacker with you.

Did not know you can do this...sweet :) (rolling him off that is)

the other team can hear you even if you use teamspeak. if they're in range, that is.

I actually got into an argument during a game with the other team about this once. I was calling out their positions to my teammates while they were around me and they were all like "We can hear you" and I'm like "No shit, I know that" and it went on for like 3 meetings. I like talking to my team.
