In Halo 2 the only option to play ranked games is through Optimatch I believe, so that you're always pitted against opponents with similar stats. You can't pick and choose your own games.
This is quite a good idea I think, if it wasn't forced on you, nobody would use optimatch. it will be interesting to see the results of this, but I think this method can only work well with games that have an abundance of players. A racing game using this method would be really good, for example comparing best lap times on that particular track etc.
