Halo 3 Beta Video

I'm interested in knowing whether they've implemented any sort of soft terrain for the sand in Zanzibar like they did for the snow in Snowbound. Frankie mentioned it, though I'm not sure if that means your feet actually sink into the snow, or if it just means that you leave footprints.

I'm faily certain he was talking about Halo 1 and 2 when he was comparing the AR and SMG starts. Since that was the conversation at the time. ;)

Yeah they´re offscreen, they give you a general sense though.
btw, what a Heavenly Sword developer had to say about the comparison pics on beyond3d:
Bad pics or not, if someone has to look at the HUD to know which version is which, they've obviously spent no time playing H2. Thus his opinion in moot.

That's the nice way of putting it. I had a different way of phrasing it that would likely have resulted in a ban. I stopped myself and counted to 10 before I hit the submit button.

QUIET!

Guys this Beta! That means there are atleast 21 revisions coming before this game goes Omega! So simma down, simma down.

Regardless of how this looks I'm genuienly excited. I just sold three of my games to buy the Halo 3 Beta, this is the most expensive demo I've bought since MGS2.

better, but what is with these comparisons using the dullest part of the new remade halo 3 level? none of the open areas with grass? none of the sea wall with ivy and cool lighting?

The Heavenly Sword developer is right. They look similar. Halo 3 fails to impress graphically.

(I know, I know, it's an ALPHA its a BETA its an ALPHABETA I seriously don't care. Unless they have a whole new set of textures, geometry and animation waiting in the wings, Halo 3 won't be the most graphically impressive X360 game of 2007. Shit, it won't even be the most graphically impressive FPS on X360 in 2007. Kind of troubling, imo, considering it's friggen HALO.)

you need to note that it is a comment from a developer who is developing on the competition.

I think it's more important to wait until we have direct screens from levels that Bungie feels are ready to show.

It's going to be a long couple of weeks. :(

It also makes games filled with players of vastly different skill levels more fun for everyone, instead of just those not starting at the respawn screen for half the game.

I've always thought the opposite. I've found the Team aspect leads to team imbalance quite easily. I've played a lot of games where the team were so imbalanced that it led to half the players having no fun. As opposed to slayer type matches where I can't remember the last time I didn't have fun in one.

I always looked at it as, as long as everyone dies, everyone is having fun. In FFA matches it's nigh impossible to get through without dieing. Even if you are insanely good, someone is going to come up behind you or you get in between two people etc. etc. and you die. Team games can get to the point where one team can be better than the other to the point where they absolutely steamroll the other team to the point where they can't get a kill. Personally I've seen it in Halo, Battlefield, Rainbow Six, and Gears off the top of my head.

Anyway different strokes, different folks again etc. etc. Just keep my precious Slayer matches Bungie! Thanks!

i'm not sure if anyone noticed the water yet:

when he gets into the mongoose (not the warthog) and drives into the water and is driving up to and past the wall in the water... look at the wall and the water line... best water ever? yep. no doubt about it. Makes Far Cry's (360 version) water look amateur made by comparison

1. These are Halo 3 MULTIPLAYER shots. Ever see the difference between Halo/Halo 2 single player and multiplayer?

2. They are BETA HALO 3 MULTIPLAYER shots.

3. Halo never was the most graphically impressive game or FPS on the Xbox either. Not even Halo 2. Chronicles of Riddick and FarCry far outdid Halo 2. At least not in screenshots because it's size vs detail. Halo was never about up-close details. And I hope it never is like that.

4. I am shocked the Heavenly Sword developer said that. Shocked!

i say we just wait till the weekly update. i am sure they will say or show something. you can only sit back and watch negative feedback on your product for so long. look at how fast bioware released other mass effect shots. i am sure bungie will do something.

!

I always thought the quaility of graphics in SP and MP where the same in Halo games, none of that different engine bullshit like in GRAW.

I just want to jump in about this specific thing and say no, I have never really seen a graphical difference. I can understand why a game developer would have to resort to tuning the graphical quality in the multiplayer component and it happens in some games but in the Halo games the difference is not noticeable as far as I (and many others) can tell.

Yeah, I know. And I also think Ninja Theory needs to remove the beam in thine own eye before considering the mote in thine neighbors. But I agree with him that at a glance, H2 multi and H3 multi beta are very similar. I don't agree that you can't tell the difference, there is an obvious jump in quality, but the game doesn't look that hot. IMO, of course.

And that something is continuing to work as scheduled. They won't be losing any sleep over this, the video speaks for itself, and soon enough, those with Beta invites will be far too busy to worry about what some dude working on Heavenly Sword had to say about textures or whatever.

I don't think Bungie is worried about negative feedback. This was a major leak, but they are launching a public beta in just a few weeks that around a million people have access to play. They've said the three maps in the beta will be the most polished so far, and that they'll release media on them between now and the beta. This will be a small blip on the march up to release. Not much difference if they wait one week or two when they're going to put a version of the actual game in our hands so soon.

i understand but it is poor quality vid. i just think in the next three weeks lots of negative comments will be taken back because there are parts that look so much better and then parts that need work. i can't wait to see the maps we will actually get to play.

well not really worried but a little upset. i mean when put so much into a project and it is getting raped on the net then yeah it has to be a little discouraging. at least it is not getting talked about as bad as too human did months back.

Best possible outcome is that Bungie makes me eat my words and then some. I would love to see that happen. No joke. Bona fide Halo fanboy here, but also a fan of the real talk.

haha real talk is that its not that impressive but it is still good. everyone is just spoiled by Gears of war. haha i know i am. i have a hard time playing last gen stuff cause i can't believe how good it used to look. haha

I suspect they are frustrated by the leak. But, they knew what the reaction would be when they showed the game in the Alpha state, and again when they released the last couple of vidocs. If they are really are confident in their game, there's not cause to be upset over teh rage on the internets, the most reasoned place on earth.

Heck, they're probably laughing at all the fuss over this video, knowing what they are about to release in a few weeks.

People don't realize the difference between Gears of War and Halo 3. Personally, I consider Halo 3 both the better looking of the 2 and the most technically advanced.

In Gears of War, they pack a lot of detail into the base texture, and put some poorly hacked normal maps / etc on top of it. You look at the rain level, zoom in and look around and notice how many compromises they made to make the level look like that... but when you look close, it all falls apart. Halo won't be like that. I say it's important that the game WOWs you right from the get go. But it's the little details that are more important in the long run.

Like the footprints in the sand, the grass that's not only 3d but animates in the wind, the light reflecting off the sand, the water, the many sun effects... whatever the small touches are.

The games does have a clean look to it, mainly attributed to it's artstyle. But the game is also very advanced technically. It will be undeniable when you see it in action, and not in an extremely shitty capture.

Rule #1 when evaluating comments is to consider the source. That goes for me, Bungie, the competition or anyone. Pot shots from the competition should be dismissed based on source alone, not to mention the (lack of) merit of his comments.

Frankly, it's pretty poor form for another developer, working on a competing platform, to take make those comments about crappy shots from an off screen video of a leaked, work in progress game. If anyone should know better, it's another developer.

Does anyone think single player will really match the trailer of MC jumping down upon the enemies? I don't think so.

are you talking about the tv ad?

if so that's not a trailer and obviously no to your question

:)

The TV AD of the kids talking and then MC running towards the brutes and jumping at them is CG. Bungie have said from the get go that it's CG and Halo 3 won't look like that.

Here's what KP over at Bungie had to say:

Quote:
I shouldn't really comment on this stuff at all but it's bothering me. The game looks nothing like Halo 2. Some objects are the same in that they're the same shape and colors, but everything is so much more detailed. You can't see that because the video is a lo-res, poorly compressed leak of an unfinished product. Something never intended for public consumption, a part of a test that has nothing to do with graphics so the build isn't made to look as good as it could. If Bungie were showing you a video they would have released something in hidef showcasing only the things that're actually finished. You should not be judging the state of the game based off of this. You cannot compare a video that Bungie created for you versus a video which Bungie never intended for you to see.

KP

Neither do I.

But maybe that's because Bungie themselves said 4 million ****ing times that it was CG and does not represent the actual game engine.

michaeld said:

That's a CG ad. The bar the campaign will be held to is the announcemnt trailer, which is the actual engine running in realtime.

Bungie went into detail about what the CG ad does and does not represent in an interview with the guys that made it here:

that's a CG ad done for i don't know which event on US television

i'd go to bungie's offices swimming from Italy to the US to get my copy of the game if H3 ends looking like that :lol
not really :P

:)

So it's safe to assume the beta we will get is a different build than tis one that was leaked? And to those with panties in wad, I don't go to Bungies site and try not to read any info on the big games like H3.

we ain't even getting the map in the leak footage! whatever beta this is we wont be seeing it.

At least the levels will be in an much more advanced state since this one wasn´t made for public viewing.

That's completely fine, but then you have to realize that judging something you know nothing about will make you look like a horse's ass. It's science. I don't make up the rules, I just follow them.

So it's safe to assume the beta we will get is a different build than tis one that was leaked?

Yes, KP (former Bungie employee) said that the build in the leaked trailer was a version just testing the multiplayer features of that map and was (obviously) never intended to be viewed by anyone external to the company and doesn't have all the graphical features implemented.

I think it's probably safe to say that. Frankie said in a recent update that the three maps we are getting are the most polished and complete from a graphics standpoint - and that the one's we are NOT getting are simply not done yet. That would include the map in the video. Here's the quote:

Frankie said:
The reasons you’re getting three maps is similar, but has as much to do with our normal production schedule as anything else. It’s easier to think of why you’re not getting the rest of the maps. They’re not done yet. All are geometry complete, but they’re being polished and tuned for graphics and gameplay ‘til the last minute. You could say that the maps you’re playing are the best balanced and most complete so far.

Just a few technical observations. Hope these pics stay up.

Check out the texturing on the caution blockade. In motion, if you frame by frame it, you can see the swirls respond appropriately to the viewing angle. Nice stuff.
h3cautiondw9.jpg

This is a frag as it triggers. Again, frame by frame this for a much better show. The lighting is totally dynamic. Check out the foliage casting a dark shadow as it's caught in the white of the blast.
h3nadenovaws3.jpg

Not only does the water splash and form around the Spartan, but it actually is effected by each tire independently. Turns send water cascading in the right direction and even the Goose's hood plunging forward as the shocks react, sends a realistic spray from the corner of the vehicle.
h3splishkr6.jpg

Very nice for a beta. Very nice for a finished game.
