Halo 3 Multiplayer Official Thread

I'm beginning to think Halo 2 was implemented better online. The latency and hit detection is the worst I've seen in a AAA online game. The spawns are the worst thing I've ever experienced. The melees are wretched. I just think Halo 2 was a lot better, even with the laggy shotgun. Not to mention one win drops your rank but you have to win like 10 to regain it?

Off topic (slightly) , but I had a dream last night I was at Bungie Studios and I saw Frankie who was drunk, but was building a LEGO bridge that would go from Bungie Studios all the way to the the ship that
Master Chief and Arbiter were on at the end of Halo 3
and I interrupted him and told him how much I loved his part in the game and his work on Bungie.net, and Frankie told me that if I bought him a case of beer, he would let me be in the Halo 4 alpha. So I went to the nearest store, bought him beer, and he gave me a code to download the H4 alpha build and yeah. I've played Halo 4 and it rocks.

Add to that...Bungie's ranking system is fucked. I lose a game, I drop. Is this is a marathon? Are we supposed to see how many wins we can string together? Would be a lot easier to win if a guy actually died when a sniper bullet goes through his head.

Well I did get back to 49 fairly easy, that soothes some of the pain.

Narrows shows up way too much, it's not even that great of a map, it's good for CTF I think, but for Team Slayer/ShottySnipe I think it's pretty bleh. I don't feel that the rockets were the best power weapon for the map, it just results in a bunch of silly deaths at the beginning of each game.

Despite my bitching I'm still pretty happy.

I hope the melee system is changed but it doesn't break the game for me.
The ranking system is quirky but still effectively serves its purpose for me.
I also feel they'll eventually take all the complaints about the playlist limitations and take that into account and freshen them. (And up things like the player count on lone wolves).

Funny enough I still haven't touched the single player since the first day I got it and still don't really have a desire to.

What about the Gravity Hammer?

Also, the Needler is deadly against those who venture into the open.
Shotgun/Mauler owns the Hammer in close quarters, unless the guy with the hammer gets the drop on the other guy..

The Gravity Hammer is even worse than the sword if you're playing good people. I'm really not even sure why they put it in the game, I've yet to knock someone's grenade back at them, and you have to be right fucking next to the person for the lunge to work, AOE damage is minimal, lame weapon.

Yeah, pretty much agree on the hammer, the only time I've managed to kill someone without a direct lunge is knocking people off the map on Epitaph or Guardian..

I've been a little more frustrated with the Hammer and Sword now that I noticed the melee/health situation applies to those as well. It's frustrating as hell. The person who reacts quicker loses...The person who is more skilled loses...Because of a mathematical equation.

Also, I'd like to mention that while I am bitching about the melee, I am overall very very happy with Halo 3. It's definitely in need of more maps of both smaller and larger variety, and possibly some more gametype variety within playlists, but overall I'm very happy with almost every aspect of Halo 3.

random thoughts:

construct is awesome, favorite map so far

narrows repeats a LOT in lone wolves at least for me, is a damn shame that there are a lot of non-slayer games on that playlist too

a lot of people that never played H:CE seems to dislike H3 mainly because the lack of auto-aim, I feel bad for them I can't go back to H2 even if I know that some maps like lockout and midship are still unmatched on H3.

the campaign mode was better than I thought, still H:CE campaign mode is the best one

AR should carry more ammo

the announcer in spanish was much better in H2, now I can barely hear him

detachable turrets > *

Agreed...

Hmm... maybe I just 'get' the Hammer, but I've done really well with it. Better against multiple enemies, and you can at least knock someone back, sometimes over a ledge.

The Hammer is hilarious, but it's not the sword, so you know, you have to play differently with it.

I've done okay with it, but it's really more of a Ninja Weapon, like the Mauler, than the sword.

yeah, this was actually during the game. DUDE WHY DONT YOU JUST QUIT YOU ONLY GOT SEVEN KILLS. it's like, motherfucker, you gave the other team HALF of their kills!

(playing catchup)

I've been playing with my girlfriend as my guest, she really, really likes Halo 3 for some reason, and is enjoying it despite the harsh learning curve of multiplayer and the fact it's her first FPS ever, on sticks or Mouse/Keyboard. So obviously she's not super great or anything, and we stick to social.

So last night, on our first game, we win with a comfortable 7 kill lead in Social Slayer, but she doesn't get any kills (Shotty snipers, please kill this gametype XD), and this dude on our own fucking team lets out this string of expletives about "letting the side down" and "quit playing you fag" and stuff. I was honestly dumbfounded, especially after we WON, and the guys K/D ratio sucked proverbial balls.

First time I ever, ever sent a profanity laden message to anyone over the internet. Guy really pissed me off.

Great Halo jumps video, shows lots of tactical jumping locations.

oh wow.

I didnt realize how much momentum you could build up with jumping on slanted surfaces.
Thats really neat. I don't consider that glitching or cheating personally - they dont seem as game breaking as super bounces, but I'm curious as to what you guys think.

I found some of these things earlier also, I thought they were glitches but it seems to be some mario like timing and speed jumping which just adds another layer of skill, I like it

The one on the pit where you can bound in to the spawn area... no. Everything else is purely fine though.

awesome vid. for the hell of it i just tried a few and walked away with a big amount of respect for their skills, they aint easy. at all (created in forge with less grav? :p). while there are some of those jumps that would definitely lead to pretty big advantages (for snipers/camping), they seem too hard to do for the majority of players, especially in a real match.

god i hope i'm right about that :lol

On Valhalla, the base near the water, when you jump in the mancannon and you land and immediately jump you can cover quite some vertical distance.

I got an Extermination medal last night in Team Objective!

It was thrilling, cleared out the whole base to get the bomb planted in High Ground. Granted there was a good deal of luck involved, my whole team was with me rushing the base and I just happened to fire the final BR headshots on everyone, getting the credit for all the kills.

Now, I really need a Perfection medal so I can fill out the top row in my medal chest.

I get it, it just sucks against anyone who isn't an idiot.

What about the Gravity Hammer?

Try hitting someone with that thing on an American host when you're across the world. Shouting abuse and hurling rocks would be more effective.

The hammer certainly can be a very inconsistent weapon.

And the ranking system is extremely frustrating.

So I can win tens of games in a row and rocket up the levels, but the moment I lose I go back down? Surely the game should think "hey, this guy has climbed 20 levels in 25 games, clearly we're uncertain about his rank; don't demote him yet", instead of "I KNEW HE COULDN'T WIN INDEFINITELY! TIME TO SEND THAT FUCKER DOWN A RANK FOR LOSING BY 2 KILLS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME"

Agreed.

Thank god (and Bungie) for Forge.

Everyone was listing their favorite maps from multiplayer in the other thread, but since this is the official one, I thought it best if I dropped mine here.

God's maps:

I love High Ground, Snowbound and especially Valhalla (best large Halo 3 map ever - easily). Snowbound's been fixed in our group to be more balanced. If you've played the map, you know what I'm referring to. Last Resort is fun, although not nearly as fun as Zanzibar. The Ascendant guys are trying out Last Resort with Zanzibar's weapon distribution/spawn and the word on the street is that it is more fun. The Halo 3 weapon loadout on that map seems to favor offense, while Halo 2's is more balanced. Guardian is a great map, no where near to Lockout in any way, shape or form.

Fixed:

On default settings, I find Construct, The Pit and Narrows to be iffy. With BR-starts, no motion sensor and some minor alterations, they actually play very well, but I would easily trade them for Lockout, Midship, Ivory Tower and Terminal. Easily. In fact, I'd trade almost all of the maps for those four with Halo 3's sandbox and gameplay (minus the melee system). One thing I despise about those maps is the art direction. Its obviously an personal aesthetic, but while the backgrounds for those environments are awesome looking, the map itself is irrevocably ugly. Since Lockout is my favorite all-time map, this might seem like a dumb statement, but when those three maps play as good as Lockout, they can look as ugly as they want.

Zzz:

Sandtrap isn't what I was expecting. The media described a massively open map hemmed in by geometry and I imagined a warren-filled, sand dune-strewn environment with Forerunner relics around, giving the Elephants free range of movement. Instead, we get a figure eight painted yellow-ish brown. It can play well sometimes, but usually its too boring for me. I've never really liked large maps outside of Halo 1's, so Valhalla is the exception to the rule (dug Headlong on occasion as well).

Isolation needs lots of work and it may simply be not worth it. Pretty map, nice environment concept - far too cluttered though and the bases are, well, someone needs to be slapped.

Epitaph is unsalvageable. Completely broken. Has anyone figured out what that hologram is of in Epitaph? Mendicant Bias perhaps?
