Halo 3 Multiplayer Official Thread

They really need to spice up Social matchmaking with exotic gametypes (infection, spies vs mercs, (laser) juggernaut, race games, etc) and maps (more unusual and diverse weapon placement).

I really think they should make a playlist just for completely chaotic gametypes like that just for fun. Call it...Social Exotica.

Hmm every time when snowbound gets a 5/5 veto, Isolation shows up as punishment. :(

Also shield doors and bubble shields are too gamebraking in Oddball. I like the mode but the games are over way too fast and sometimes it feels like it was never playtested. :(

yeh you'd think that with three years of development theyd get things right. one hit ball melees standing at a door are so fair. what a joke.

I'm starting to get really tired of matchmaking.

I still don't know why they cant have a lobby system set up for unranked play. Anybody have a good explanation?

uh, yes. i'm sure this has been talked about since halo 2, but i didn't have xbox live back then, and didn't really pay attention to message board banter.

so what's the deal with the no lobby system for unranked play?

Woot, got my second Perfection, though this time in Social Slayer, Warthog on Valhalla rules if you have a driver that knows what he's doing

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=78312556&player=z4m

Also managed to swat a guy away from the warthog with the flag while he was trying to board my driver, was hilarious, made a clip and sent it to the guy I hit, clip is up in my file share.

Zam,

There should be a "Rifles Only" selection, and there'll mostly be BR's on the map. Likely only one Sniper Rifle and maybe a Carbine, if the map has it (Forge, ugh).
Yeah, but that keeps snipers, and I wanted to get rid of them (making SWAT gametypes so snipers sorta ruins it), I know that there was a BR-only option in H2, but know it's gone..

We need to play some zam, though I fear you're much better than myself, it should still be fun though.
For sure, though you might have been deleted from my list in the latest culling, but I'll just remove some other random person :D

im talking about actually going through a list of available games and choosing what gametype and map you want to play

You mean browsing custom games?
I think bungie has already addressed that it would spread the playlists too thin.

The random nature of the playlists keeps the game much more fresh than you realize.

I don't see the point in browsing custom games, I'll gladly live without it. Tried it in GRAW 1/2 and Vegas, usually it would only be a bunch of tools joining your party, whine about the gametype, be unwilling to switch teams, quit as soon as they started losing. And joining a game full of strangers, playing with a full team of strangers? Not really my idea of fun.

I'd much rather play custom games with friends than strangers, and if I don't have anyone to play with I'll play Lone Wolves, Rumble Pit or some other Social playlist.

Obviously, different people have different preferences.

But I would have at least liked the option to browse games.

From what I understand, this was initially going to make it into the game but was cut so matchmaking playlist population would remain optimal.

Just play any Live title that doesn't use a matchmaking system, the population plays one or two maps/game modes, it's awful. Matchmaking gives games legs for me, I quit playing Gears due to the awful lobby system, and I don't see myself playing Team Fortress for long due to the same reasons.

I can live without a place to browse public custom games, but I would really like a playlist that has a lot of "experimental" game modes, ones that change often.

This.

Bungie did the right thing by creating matchmaking. I've been a PC gamer for a long time and I've been down that road too many times. I remember a few years (and it may still be like this) when the only level anyone played in Warcraft II was Garden of War.

QFT!!

Gears was fun for a week or two because it was new but soon became tiresome because of the lobby system. It was nearly impossible to play a ranked match with anyone but strangers. I rarely got to play with my friends. The party/matchmaking system in Halo 2 and 3 is one of the games major plus points for me.

And then there was Warcraft 3 with a matchmaking system for ranked games and a custom game list where you found all the crazy usercreated stuff like several towerdefenses or dota. Never had a problem finding a game.

Yeah Forge doesn't come close to the mapmaking tools of a Blizzard RTS but everytime someone asks for a Rocket Race Playlist I feel like a big feature is missing here.

Gaaah, can you imagine what horrors a rocket race playlist would generate?!

Ultimate horrors.

Can you imagine the mass confusion over the game rules!
Imagine going in with a random teammate! YIKES.

I can see the forum posts already... "Bungie fix your broken fucking rocket launcher! I shot a guy 5 times with it and he never died!"

It would probably get veto'd everytime.

Not necessarily Rocket Race, just fun and chaotic things. There's obvious do's and don'ts.

Oh I'm not knocking the chaos playlist idea. Could be alot of fun...

Just picturing rocket race attempt to play out with the general population, thats all.

urk

butthole fishhooking yes
Do's: Immediately melee the opposing team and get into a slap fight while one or two other teams race around collecting free points.

Team Objective Playlist = Awesome

I've played about 10hrs and so far Matchmaking has done a great job of providing fun yet competitive games.

Is there a reason that certain maps like Epitaph only appear in one or two playlists? There are enough maps to fill the playlists, but it seems like most are going unused.

I wonder how rocket race would play out with fuel rod guns. (or even spartan lazers)

Spartan Lasers would be kind of meh, because of the Charge time. Fuel Rod Cannons with Infinite Ammo would be awesome.

Yeah, I love it. Maybe it's because of the nostalgia (back when H2 was released all there was to play with teams was Team Skirmish, BTB and Team Training) but it's a fun break from just mindless shooting, and escaping with the flag in a full packed Warthog is pure awesome.

It's just too bad the population in that playlist is a little small, haven't seen more than 10 000 players at once on that playlist.

The playlist also needs more KotH and Oddball, and more Multi Flag. Why play 1 Flag on symmetrical maps (such as Valhalla and Narrows) when those maps are great for Multi Flag.

I'm looking for people that are decent to start playing Team Slayer regularly with. My group of friends that I normally play with are not online much anymore. I'm tired of joining random matchmaking matches with people that don't communicate or are flat out bad players. Anyone?

Does everyone else hate:

Vehicles in team doubles (ie ghost)
Construct: fights happen no where except at the top of the lifts. It's just so broken
Teams who crouch-hide in team doubles
The same two maps coming up over and over (pit and construct)
oddball/territories especially in slayer

The good part is that most of these things can be fixed easily

Multi-team is surprisingly fucking awesome. Anytime we've got like 6 and don't want to get broken up in BTB we usually play it and it's pretty fucking fun.

I still love the fact that Last Resort can only come up with shotty snipers on the team slayer playlist. (Which makes no sense!)

True map editor please or at the very least modified Forge maps introduced into Team Slayers.

I played it tonight for the first time and I enjoyed it for something a little different. I really like the variety of the different playlists this time. They all offer their own unique experience, and Tactical is a decent addition. Now if the lists themselves can get some more variety map wise, and gametype wise, the Matchmaking aspect will be pretty close to perfect.

I gotta say...BTB on Sandtrap is some of the coolest multiplayer moments I've ever had. So chaotic and awesome, and the Elephants are just lol.

Couple of complaints - it's so so quiet. I've found it hard to actually make friends in this game. Also, there are still maps I'm yet to play, like Epitaph and that jungle-looking one, and I've played 60 games or something. Oh, and it never astounds me how CRAP some people are at this. I'm no expert or anything, but damn, it's like some of these guys have never played a game before.

So, to fix the quiet issue, if any GAFfers want to add me, that'd be great. Gamertag - Rezbit

Melee Observations:

I think I've discovered why I was losing the bulk of my melee encounters (~90%). A buddy and I messed around in Forge a bit experimenting with the melee system. We used different weapons and they all registered the same amount of damage with a one hit melee on full shields. Probably expected.

But the difference is the number of shots you can get on a guy before you melee. I took a stopwatch and did a totally un-scientific time comparison between the BR and AR. It takes ~3.3 seconds to unload just 1/2 a clip from the BR. In contrast, it only takes ~3.0 seconds to unload a FULL clip from the AR. So, while the BR may be more powerful, the AR is getting significantly more bullets on the target. And that's the difference in the melee encounters.

I believe the last week I went BR crazy using it in just about every fire fight. Tonight I made a conscience effort to use my AR in the closer fights. As a result, I would estimate I won 60-70% of the melee encounters I had.

...On that note, I think I'm done playing ranked team slayer. I got to level 20, but its an exercise in frustration. I cannot get on a good roll - usually somewhere between a -5 and +2. I salute everyone who is above a 30. That's really impressive. Instead, I'm gonna concetration more on team objective games. CTF is a lot more fun and the teamwork aspect is a lot more rewarding.

I hate playing The Pit on double teams, 90% of people just camp inside the room where the sword is located.

There are vents on walls that you can nade into.

If you're West Coast and player later at night PM me your gamertag, or just if you like objective.

Yeah, that sucks. You have to go in with rockets and shotty/maulers. I also find that you can wait most teams out of there. There are some issues with the MP for sure.

Damn I just lost a heartbreaker. :lol We were getting our ass kicked all match, I break off a Killing Frenzy to pull within 3, we take the lead up 49-47, and lose. :(

49, woo! Beating a General pushed me over! :lol

I'm beginning to accept and adapt to the new melee system Bungie has set up for Halo 3.

Now, what I DO have a problem with though is the melee lunge distance. To understand where I'm coming from check out the clip "Lunge much?" in my file share.

Link.

Sometimes it's just ridiculous.

I don't mean to sound like a dick here, but is your revelation that the the AR is better than the BR in close encounters?

I think it is.

Also, I played three games of Social Skirmish last night in a group of five.

Game 1 was One Bomb on High Ground. Cool. That's in Team Objectve.

Game 2 was Multi Flag at The Pit. Non-existant in Team Objective?

Game 3 was Multi Flag in Narrows. Is that in Team Objective?

VIP and Territories need a lower weight, and Flag needs a higher weight. My $.02
