Halo 3 Multiplayer Official Thread

Snowbound is probably the worst in terms of Double Team camping.

The rest isn't that bad, but is counterable. Snowbound's Shotgun area is also, but makes it more difficult since they both have Mauler/Shotgun and sit right beside the shield door.

So last night in Multi-Team I was playing Oddball on Narrows when someone in the game got to an area that's not part of the map. It's visable, and everyone can get there easily, but it seems that you can only live there for a few seconds then you die. So the game turned into a matter of people jumping down to their oncoming deaths for a few second of oddball possession. I'm not saying where it is because I don't want it to become widespread. A lot of you probably already know about it. But hopefully it gets fixed in a patch.

I don't mean to sound like a dick here, but is your revelation that the the AR is better than the BR in close encounters?

Kind of...

I was under the assumption that the BR's power made up the difference in the amount of bullets you can put on a target with an AR. But, in my experiment, ime-wise you're better off going with the AR.

For instance, in our experiment my partner stood still while I unloaded on him. It takes 7 BR trigger squeezes on the body (we shot at the leg) for a kill and 4 directly on the head. The 7 squeezes equates to half a clip which I showed takes ~3.3 seconds to do. On the other hand it takes almost a full AR clip (probably 90% of the clip) of body shots for a kill. And I showed that a full AR clip takes ~3.0 seconds to unlaod.

The moral of the story is that if you find yourself in a close encounter shooting the BR you are better off backing away than going in for the melee kill because you won't have enough time to damage them enough to win the melee encounter. But, if you have an AR, then going in for the melee is the better option.

I stumbled onto that launch day during a game of Oddball. I only went down there once or twice when I was getting chased. But it was somewhat amusing.

single player environments we NEED multiplayer levels built around...

I'm kind of shocked that there is no level built around the prettiest single player level in the game (Sierra 117).

And I couldnt find a really good shot of the area I wanted from floodgate... but it was basically the fire sky with the giant glowing ark behind it. Right around the downed covie cruiser covered in flood soup.

Yeah, I discovered you could do that in the Beta with snowbound, you can use the bubble shield to get it out there really far or hide out there.

The machines will kill your shields if not all together by going past the warning zone.

Plus there's an invisible wall not far out. No real place to hide.

How come everytime I go online to play, I'm always stuck in Basic Training?
Choose a different playlist? Only played one game of Basic Training, then I switched to Team Slayer and played that instead.

Game 2 was Multi Flag at The Pit. Non-existant in Team Objective?

Game 3 was Multi Flag in Narrows. Is that in Team Objective?
Don't think they are, I'm up to around 24 in Team Objective and I've never played a game of Multi Flag..

You just made me realise that Halo 3 doesn't have that SP segments made into MP maps deal.

I know I was a little bummed that there was no single player level set in Guardians' setting.
Once that map was revealed I kept wondering if we were headed to a forerunner planet or something as it didnt look like a typical halo environment.

I think I pointed out a bubble shield is needed. You're not going to be able to stay out there for the entire match, but if you do it correctly you can get your score the highest and then make it very hard for other people to get the oddball.

Bungie should outsource some maps to some devs, while still making some themselves, I just want a lot of good maps for Halo 3 and it'd be beneficial to the variety to have different devs take a crack at it. Halo fans are very hungry.

As long as they are more balanced/creative than Desolation and Tombstone.

Whatever the name of that developer is...The developer that did the Halo: CE remakes for Halo 2...Desolation and Tombstone. Hang Em' High...I bet they'd be willing to develop another pair of maps. Either way new maps for Halo 3 means good things.

They were remakes, not like the originals were that balanced or creative anyway. Never saw all the hype around Hang 'Em High. Now Damnation, or even Boarding Action, we're talking there. Imagine Boarding Action with 75 percent gravity. That'd be a great game.

I've realized we were spoiled with the large number of maps in Halo 2 :(

The problem isn't the lack of actual maps. The problem is how they're being used in the playlists. I remember when Halo 2 first came out, all BTB seemed to consist of was One Flag CTF at Headlong. After a week or two, an update was implemented and all of the maps were used throughout the game. That hasn't happened with Halo 3.

Look at Team Objectives:

One-sided VIP at Isolation
One-sided VIP at High Ground
Assault at High Ground
One Flag at High Ground
Territories at High Ground
One Flag at Narrows
Assault at Narrows
One Flag at Last Resort
Assault at Last Resort
Territories at Last Resort
Territories at Valhalla
Assault at Valhalla

I'm sure I'm missing one or two. But why no KotH? Why not Oddball? Why no objectives on The Pit, Construct, Epitaph, Snowbound, or even Guardian?

Yes, I know.

However, when we made the transition to Halo 3 the number of maps in Halo 2 was a lot different then Halo 3.

What I don't like at all is territories, veto it right away. It's implemented in such a passive way, just stand on the spot and wait. It'd be so much better if you had to destroy something. But then again, they just did that stuff so they could add racing, but plain territories is boring to me. However I like it on Valhalla

Plus those of us who've played the beta have played three maps a shitton. Only know am I starting to appreciate Highground, Valhalla and Snowbound again. I was tired of them when Halo 3 first came out.

man, the way a few losses can drop your level just doesn't seem right.

and btw, if you're one of those shitheads that bitches at the team because you got 16 kills even though you died 25 times, you can go fuck yourself.

Was this ever a problem with H3?

Hollering at the weak link on a team is totally useless in any aspect. Shit happens. Sometimes you have a bad game. Being called a pussy bitch fag isn't going to help anyway but that's Xbox Live.

Everyone has a bad game now and then. The only time I get irritated at a player is when they just wholly refuse to do anything. I've played Team Slayer games where a random fourth guy will charge their entire team and get slaughtered. Despite everyone telling him to stay back, he'd continue to go in and die. I've had games lost because of that. Nothing wrong with calling him out. But I had a game on Ascension in H2 where both teams had snipers on opposite ends of the map and I got spawned out in the open five times before finally getting a spawn under cover. Team was talking so much shit about how bad I was.

But some MP-maps are inspired by or in the same setting as SP levels

Valhalla - The Covenant
Sandtrap - The Ark
Snowbound - Halo
Construct - The end of The Ark

Ok, well the leveling system is complete bullshit. I don't want to hear about complicated formulas, because I just had two games in a row, one guy quit immediately, I still led my team, and the next game I had 2 AFK guys and me and the other guy still managed to put up 31 points while the other team got free AFK kills. I delevel to 48 after this, give me a break.

Oh man, I really, really love this game, a lot.

The multiplayer weapon set is so fantastically balanced and once you understand what weapons to use in which situations the game really starts to reward you.

Remembering my bad K/D ratio in Halo 2 and Halo 3 Beta - around 0.66, this time I'm doing a whole lot better. I just reached Level 20 in ranked Slayer and got Captain (not showing up in my Bungie.net profile for some reason yet). My K/D ratio is now 0.97 and still increasing consistently. It's a massive difference.

The maps also have such a fantastic amount of cool spots and situations to master. I love the first rush to the rockets in the Pit. Rushing for the Shotgun when snowbound begins is fantastic too. And getting the shotgun once Narrows starts, with options either Sniper or BR and grenades, so much depth in match beginnings only. I love the battles by the elevator exits in Construct.

My K/D ratios per map:

Construct: 1.21
Guardian: 0.76
High Ground: 0.92
Isolation: 0.91
Last Resort: 0.86
Narrows: 0.93
Snowbound: 1.02
The Pit: 1.07
Valhalla: 0.86

As you see, I just can't seem to be able to figure out Guardian. I just get my ass kicked there. I'm really confused about strategy and where to head and what to shoot with.

Final note. You guys still get the rush of adrenaline while playing? I'm still getting excited like a kid. Sometimes it's not that great for performance all shaking and shouting. But love the feeling.

Hey, I think we should all talk about our favorite Campaign levels!

FAKE EDIT: No we shouldn't. We should talk about out favorite multiplayere maps here, and campaign levels is the official thread.

To get us started:
Love:
Guardian: Not sure why, but I like this a lot more than Lockout. Lots of interesting control points, and I've always enjoyed my games here.
Narrows: The map version of Jesus Christ, Allah, Stinkles, etc. So good.
Sandtrap: Lots of fun for BTB, a really well designed map all around.
Valhalla: Really well balanced, and excellent for a wide variety of gametypes. Really rewards you for working as a team.
Like:
Construct: I didn't like this at first, but I'm starting to "get" it, and it's really awesome visually.
High Ground: I like the map, but fatigue from the beta combined with the terrible spawns makes me dread this map a bit. Still, lots of fun.
Snowbound: An excellent map I really enjoy, and the shield doors are cool, but the beta has made me fatigue on this map.
Epitaph: I really don't get the hate for this map. Awesome for Rockets matches, and is good for grenade practice. A good showcase for the AR being an excellent starting weapon.

Am okay with:
Isolation: Really cool visually, and excellent for Oddball, but there's a bit too much empty space on the map at any given time.
The Pit: I know a lot of people love it, and I'm starting to warm up to it, but the Sword sort of breaks this map.

Don't like/Hate:
Last Resort: Not terrible, but I was never a huge fan of Zanzibar, and I've played it too much. Good for Snipers, though.

I thought it only took into account wins and losses and your rank relative to those competing. Not how you finished within your team.

BRs? How does that work out? The map consists on pretty much corridors and confined spaces around the yellow elevator, and BR doesn't seem to be really at it's best there. Or do you try to find a peaceful spot somewhere across the map and drop people around the elevator room from there?

er, i was thinking of Isolation. my bad.

for Guardian I use mostly the mauler or shotgun. usually people like to rush the main elevator and you can mauler/melee them before they hit the ground.

I'm not sure, but if all it takes into account is wins, losses, and your comparative rank, I fail to see how that's "complicated". :lol Punished because you have quitters and 2 afkers, good system!

The Shotgun/Mauler is the power weapon of Guardian.
