Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - Part 4 [Available To Watch]

Ditto with the Sarge chewing a cigar, really?

It was the general in charge of the base with the cigar, if that makes a difference (still a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus).

I thought the roman soldier with the AR was more hokey than the relief on the wall, though that too seemed an odd decorative touch.

really enjoyed it. very well done. cant understand how some of you guys can nit-pick so much - the production values (if not the acting/story) are far above basically all tv sci-fi, what were you expecting?

Yea judging from some of the responses here I was expecting terribad acting usually associated with fan-made videos but the kids turned out decent.

The action-packed start however, I didn't like so much. Just the way it was shot, felt off. Doesn't use shaky-cam to good effect at all.

Not as bad as I was expecting, but it remains a po-faced version of everything good 'ol Verhoven so wonderfully lampooned in Starship Troopers. Effects were okay though even if the underlying feel was a bit cheap.

Feels like what it is to me - something willed into existence in support of something else that got popular enough to foster it's own mini industry of average to below average literature and other media.

No doubt popular with the right demographic and why not in the end? I'll be bowing out for the moment though unless I hear anything that warrants another look further down the line.

I actually liked the episode. Though I wonder if they'll cover the entire career of the lead from cadet to bridge commander. I did recognize the actor that plays Kevin Tran from Supernatural so that was also nice.

Agreed. I just watched it and it was a lot better than I expected. Not quite big budget movie quality but well above TV shows currently.

Surprisingly decent. Though that might just be because I was expecting it to be much worse.

Though I have to say I am so sick of people casting actors that look like they could walk down a model's catwalk as soldiers that have supposedly undergone intense training.

This is the cadets, so I can try and buy into it, but almost everybody there looks like they would quite literally snap under pressure.

Keep the pretty boys and girls as pilots, damn you. The soldiers need to be beefy. That's what I liked about Kat in Reach. Went against the stereotype hot model that can kick ass.
They actually training to be the leaders of the army. They aren't grunts.

It won't cover his entire career, no. Just a couple of very pivotal events.

Just got around to watching through the YouTube app on Xbox. I liked it. Shame about the video stuttering on there though. Even stutters in Halo Waypoint. Can't wait for the next episodes and the eventual Blu-ray release.

Just got round to watching it, Pretty amazing, Well done to the 343 Guys, The actors and the Production crew. Hyped to see the rest of it.

I like the Military side of Sci-Fi Universes a great deal and seeing it explored within the Halo Verse is fantastic.

Enjoying everything. Role on Nov 6th

the intro is terrific by the way. total nerd chills. must have a halo movie at some point., but this will fill the void in the meantime.

You know I was awaiting upscaled fan-movie quality, but some shots are really impressive. Sure the acting is not top-notch but it is believable.

This is good.

Its funny, I didn't expect myself to like the characters or writing from the trailer, but I am finding them pretty believable. I particularly like what they have going on with Lasky's character- his reservations about the insurrectionist conflict seem fair, while many of them are clear cut crazy terrorists, many of them are just "over taxed farmers" from outer colonies who want to become independent of the UNSC. Its understandable why he would empathize with them. As for his disobeying of orders? I imagine he has personal reasons not to obey dumb orders, possibly
his brother was sent on such a mission and wound up dead. He seems to be replaying random messages from his brother rather than anything new, so it seems to heavily hint his brother died sometime shortly after those were sent.
We also know nothing about his father, so I imagine there is some interesting history there as well. He clearly has reason to hate the insurrectionist which was said by his female friend.. On top of that, the one officer told him "pain like that cannot be forgotten, only tolerated" or something to that extent, which gives his actions some level of explanation and helps them stand out as more sense worthy. He clearly seems to be leadership material to a degree as he doesn't seem to be the type who thinks rushing in guns blazing is the only option, and has a knack for playing chess implying he is a good strategist. Right now his actions seem to be driven by his internal compass that there is always a better option and that the inevitable shouldn't always be accepted. Ultimately, I think the appearance of the Covenant will make him find his potential, especially when those close to him start getting killed. I imagine these actions and motivations will drive some of the decisions his character makes in Halo 4 as well.

Basically, if the story avoids the angst and keeps him like this Ill keep enjoying it. He is a believable character with some potentially interesting history and I can empathize with his actions and thought processes.

Still bugging me about him calling her "Sir" instead of ma'am.

WTF is this shit, 343?
Weren't there other movies that had soldiers calling female officers "sir?"

I think on Voyager they even called Janeway "sir" for awhile and thus corrected them in one episode. I dunno.

A lot of strong female characters in media especially military roles request/order that they be called sir instead of Ma'am both as a sign of dominance and to show case gender equality. I don't understand why this is such an issue to people. It's more than common.

Feminests of today lobby for Sir to be gender ambiguous because it's almost an archaic sign of mens dominance in higher tier roles its not a stretch to believe that some feminist ideals from today have been adopted by a more enlightened humanity of the 25th century

Star Trek Uses the exact same structure for command

Is the Halo 4 Limited Edition really sold out everywhere? Seems to be out online at least. Can I still get it at Gamestop? I knew I shouldn't have waited so long to pre-order but I thought it'd be like all the other Halo editions where there are always just a ton.

Target and Walmart had some the other day

I was going to note that as well. It's quite common especially in sci-fi set in the future.

Only thing that really bugged me in the first episode was the giant AR on the wall (wha?) and the way the opening sequence was filmed.

I think the AR has became a symbol of the UNSC, The Greek spartan statue is holding one its obviously iconic in the universe. While I think an embossed UNSC logo or something similar would have more place on the wall the AR was of little concern it's felt like it fit in the world.

The AR is there because the UNSC likes to instill a sense of duty towards uselessness in all their friendly AI cadets. What better representation is there? They unfortunately did not show the pride of Corbulo Academy in the episode, a mural of a Warthog flying off of a cliff, which is labeled "How to Drive Your Spartan to Battle."

^ I just don't think the Halo 3/4 style AR translate well to film. They should have simplified it and made it more sleek, or went for the more industrial design from Reach IMO. It does look better in the hands of the actual marines compared to the cadets though:

Yeah, its basically sold out everywhere. However, if you ask your local GS manager very nicely they may be able to shoot out an email and request another LE. Thats what I did, and I have a backup reserved from Amazon just in case.

I'm surprised that it's actually hard to get, limited Halo is really limited THIS time? Owell I was leaning towards the standard edition + war games map pass, get more helmets that way.... that metal case is so sexy though in the limited edition.

Besides the fact that the battle-gear from the cadets look pretty dorky, I thought the film was pretty darn kick ass.

I liked it, I am interested in seeing what direction this goes.

And Its nice to see Ms. Popplewell again, although never expected to her to be doing a short-series like this. (Although, I have a feeling she will be killed off at some point).

I do like that they are building a back-character that is in Halo 4.

I'll keep watching, I am totally in the dark about this series, the Idea of a Blu-ray makes me happy.

Well that's a bummer about the LE. I guess I'll still try for it at my GS though. Halo 3's and Reach's LE's didn't seem worth the money to me but the maps and specs really had my interest this time.

Liked it a lot better my second time watching it.

Only complaint is the statue holding an AR. Feels out of place and kind of forced, should have been a sword..

Actually don't mind the look of the AR in general either.

I think it's implied it's a Greek spartan, obviously the Spartans are common knowledge in the UNSC based on the games marines regard them as almost mythical like the spartan warriors of old. Im actually a big fan of the solider holding the rifle it's kind of a full circle thing. Nice touch and I can see how it could be seen as a sign of inspiration for the cadets

I don't think the Spartan program was common knowledge at that point in time, although I could be wrong its been a while since I read the books. And even if it was at that time, they would have had a statue of it at the center of an Academy that has likely been around for a long time.

I think it has more to do with the name of the academy.

That said its not a huge deal, it just feels a bit forced, like "How do we make this "Halo"? Insert teh AR! "

Any ideas/speculation as to what the light in the sky is at the end?

Spartan program became public in 2547. No idea when the web series is set but id say base on laskeys age it's earlier than that. It likely the name of the academy now you mention it. Either way it's nice to see a hero of old with a weapon of the present it's proper gander

The series takes place in 2526 I think.

Not public knowledge at all, but its very possible the Spartan image was used as an icon throughout the UNSC prior to the program. Also, ONI may have planned for the inevitable reveal of the program, thus planting seeds of the heroic image of the Spartans. They statue is an awesome idea, but the final product in the series looks a little hokey.

Yeah, it's a Greek Spartan, seems like a symbol for the UNSC and that will play a role later I guess. I have mostly forgotten everything that was in Fall of Reach, they might have touched on this topic?

Why do you want the LE? What makes it worth it?

I say this as somebody who has it preordered and is having second thoughts XD

The maps mainly, I'm probably going to get all the packs regardless so this is slightly cheaper + the early specs and video content.

Aren't the map packs usually about $10 anyway? And the LE is $30 more than the regular edition, so it seems like a wash.

What do the early specs do? Or do you have a link where I can read up on them in detail, because I always get confused by the info I see about them.

edit: nevermind, I think I found a decent explanation, and the LE is I guess a "15% discount" on the maps, suggesting the maps will cost more this time around.
