Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - Part 4 [Available To Watch]

Man I really love this series. Excellent episode, even though I could feel it coming I was psyched when
Chief kills the Zealot

It kind of bugs me that they took such care to accurately capture the sight and sounds of the guns and vehicles of Halo so well, but then in a few places they just ignore the timeline.

Zealots in Reach and Anniversary look like this

But in FUD and Halo 4 they look like this

Which makes no sense because FUD and 4 are on opposite ends of the series chronologically, and the Elites in Halo 4 aren't even part of the Covenant. It can be explained by saying "prior to Reach some Elites still used this old ass armor and then it was all that was left after they split from the Covenant", but it's weird because Elite armor is supposed to be highly traditional.

And then Chief appears to be wearing Mark VI armor? I can't think of a way to explain that.

Overall it's still a wonderful series but the small touches like having Mark V armor or traditional Zealot armor would have made it slightly cooler. It just seems strange to make all of this great looking stuff but forget about the series chronology in just a few places.
For the same reason that the chief changes his armour between Halo 2 and 3 and Halo 3 and 4.

I liked it, but all of the MC stuff was really cheesy to me. Meh.
Pretty much my take as well. His reveal shot was particularly bad - how did he kill the elite. Just a kachunk and it dropped, followed by the turn of the head (with I can only imagine wind-swept hair), and the upswell of music. Felt too forced.

Most of the other Chief scenes linger on him too long, or overuse slow mo, or switch views on us.

I know CGI stuff is expensive, but it helps battle scenes quite a bit to have medium and long shots where we can logically place *everybody* in the space. Not just person A firing out of frame followed by enemy B firing out of frame. And hey, Halo isn't a cover shooter (yet), show us the battlefield!

But a noble effort, even if cheesy.

I don't think the Elite changes are part of the canon. It is merely and update to the character, thus why they are that way in FUD. This is how Elites have always looked in the Halo 4 canon, even pre-Reach.

Eh, when they were revealed they mentioned that they are in stripped down armor different from when the Covenant was at its highest. It seems they acknowledged some of the changes being unique for the Storm faction, so it is weird that the armor on these guys wasn't a bit more inline with older iterations, and maybe less crusty looking. I can deal with it, its probably a budget thing, and given FUD is clearly a small scale deal I understand. Now if they ever went to make a big budget movie or show they would really need to nail these details a little more IMO.

Chief's armor still looks basically the same (just more HDified) from Halo 2 to 3. I have no clue why it changes between 3 and 4 though, but then the game isn't even out yet.

Actually it's the Mark IV from the Halo: Evolution shorts. Very similar to the Mark VI, but still the Mark IV (no shields). There are a few variations to this armor, in Halo Wars, and the covers of some Halo Books (the new Fall of Reach).

The only thing I did not like about MC was the "Call me Master Chief" line, but everything else felt pretty good to me, he was not overused or pictured as a "saviour" too much, but still badass.

Isn't it the same armour in 3 and 4? I guess he could get a new variant when the Infinity shows up, but I haven't heard anything about that.

I don't put too much stock into it anyway. As long as Elites are recognisably Elites, Spartans are recognisably Spartans, etc, I can accept that it's a game and the artists have to do something between instalments :P

So far I would have to say this is the best movie based off a video game I've ever seen. Awesome, but in a way kind of sad seeing that big blockbuster movies can't pull it off.

I read it all as a combination of re-imagining, and just wanting to keep the style of Halo 4's promotional material consistent with the game itself.

Really? Not for me.

Noticeable compression, no 5.1, slight stutter here and there. And the black levels in Waypoint aren't the best. Give me my Blu-ray, please. Wait, does the Blu-ray get the extra footage?

Yeah, I get that. But it'll be good enough for me because I'm only going to watch the series once, maybe twice at absolute most.

The Cole Protocol cover features a MK IV that looks similar to Reach MK V.

I pretty sure a video on Waypoint (will check later) said that the MK IV had a few visually different suits made as they researched and developed the suit further. But the internal components were all identical, and the MK designation of the suit referred more to the internal systems than it's visual appearance. So some of the stuff with the chief was a bit cheeky but some of it was handled pretty well too. I was worried about his presence on screen but the sense of scale felt pretty good. Especially when all of them are first walking down that hallway.

Also, that pistol. Damn.

Pretty fun episode.

This was my only beef. I know why they did it, but in terms of canon and say, dramatic effect, I would have preferred him to say something cryptic.

This was easily the best, not that it's hard to do so. There are certainly well made movies out there based on games but FUD feels like it matters. I try not to 'fan-boy' out too much, but some of the scenes in this episode just made my inner child freak the fuck out. :)

Frank, did you survive the invasion?

Hamish Tavish Beamish survived eight months in a frozen spacecraft while the occupants slept in cryosleep, surviving by burning their excess body hair and eating their toenails. He'll survive this.

true. they could easily afford it and a big publisher (warner, fox...) handles the marketing and distribution costs.

Microsoft could potentially afford to do ANYTHING, they could monetarily fund a trilogy of live action series/films with the best production and writing possible. They could make every fanboy's dream com true, as long as they make a profit on it's investments.

Halo is cash-cow for them. They cut-out Bungie when it was convenient and if it becomes convenient again, they can gut 343 if they want to. It saddens me to say that but Microsoft isn't the nicest publisher/developer out there, they can do a lot with their money but if it doesn't do anything for them they have no reason to budge on anything.

A business wants to make a profit on their investments? Bastards!!!!

what do you mean by they cut out bungie? I thought bungie wanted to move on from making halo games? some of the key players stayed behind, but this is first I'm hearing of microsoft cutting out bungie.

Hey I'm not saying they shouldn't I'm saying they wont ever do anything with Halo at a complete loss.

My point is, "Fan Service" is on the bottom of the list of things Microsoft will do with Halo after "Make Money" and "Make more Money".

And this is one of the reasons why Halo fanboys, myself included will always have a whole in their hearts.

I never thought to check, it better be!

I agree. it would be terrible of microsoft to not release it on blu ray here.

Any idea of which studio is distributing the BD? Halo Legends was handled by Warner and wasn't region coded, so you could import freely if this is the same.

I'm in the UK and will be buying it regardless because I have a multiregion player, so I'll test it when I get it.

thanks. I'm hoping it's released on blu ray here because I won't have a playstation 3 next month, but I could always buy a cheap standalone player.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Bungie just wanted to be an independent studio again and they chose to move onto a new IP after their 5 game (?) contract with Microsoft was up.

When you make a dev sign a contract to publish a game where you don't let said dev team split from you with the rights to it intact.

But hey, it's better than EA or Activision, who just straight up shut down devs when they feel the need to.

Bungie did not have a five game contract with MS, it was fully owned by MS. MS did not cut Bungie out. Bungie earned, by making a series of amazing games, the chance to spin out and do something new and amazing. It is an unprecedented thing and there's no point comparing it to something else.

Wat. 343 is already a subsidiary of Microsoft, that was the ends to 'cutting out' Bungie already.

Yeah, that's why those bastards are ripping us off and charging 5 bucks an episode for Spartan Ops. A better, non greedy company would give something like that away for free for the fans!

Like I said, giving Bungie the chance to move on was the best chance they had. God knows what horrible situation could have occurred if they'd taken the deal Activision showed them, they'd be a statistic along with the other devs Activision murdered to bits.

I would love to know how much money they made from HaloFest at PAX. My guess is that they lost a shitload and gave fans a lot to be excited about. MS certainly isn't the best publisher, but Halo is their baby and thus far they have done right by the property. The MS that you describe probably would have sold the movie rights to Fox and walked off with a nice paycheck.

oh. thanks for the reply, not sure I fully understand what you're trying to say, but it's been a tiring day, so put that down to me being tired.

stinkles, do you know if this mini series will be getting a uk blu ray release? no worries if you don't and many thanks in advance for replying.

What a trooper.

I quite enjoyed that episode actually, the Scooby Doo style scene with all of the cadets running through hallways and into other doors with the Zealot chasing them, and then the cadets chasing the Zealot etc, was hilarious. In terms of tone it's not what I was expecting from the series, but it's refreshing to see something so lighthearted.
