Halo 4 OST Discussion

If the tone of the OST is a good indication, then this game world will be damned interesting to discover. Obvioisly I have no idea how the OST works in-game, but it's doing its part in hyping me up for the game.

Monumental's impressions of the in-game soundtrack (from the HaloGAF thread):
By now all of you have heard the music of Halo 4. You will never understand that importance of a game's score until you've played Halo 4. I think 50% of the way that I felt while playing (and feel now that I'm sorting out my thoughts) has to do with the impression the music left on me. While there is a lot that makes it "just another Halo" for the casual observer, I guarantee you that every one of you will understand that this is a different trilogy; a new story and a new emotional journey. All of that is tied to the music. It is different and amazing. Different and amazing but also very appropriate. All that talk of the "tone" of this game being different, "the more personal story", all of that is conveyed through the music. This music is grandiose, and industrial, and bombastic, and sinister, and ethereal. Believe me, by the time the credits roll and you start reflecting on this game, the music will be a huge architect of shaping those thoughts. A small contingent of people will surely be disappointed that it isn't Marty's classic Halo score, (and even I hope that it makes a little more of an appearance in future games) but this score truly is a big part of what makes Halo 4 so unique and distinctly new.

On first listen, I was subconsciously trying to hear Halo and it led to only being taken by a few tracks, including 117, Nemesis, and Revival remix. Once I listened while being preoccupied and not listening to legitimize it as a proper Halo soundtrack, I thought the whole thing was pretty good, actually. For some reason or another, I thought of the Stargate film and one of the Star Trek feature flick scores (Undiscovered Country?). In any case, I think it's a fine new sound for a new Halo since old stuff is a bit, well, old and now too-familiar. I liked the more common and mildly spacey, sweeping, slightly John Barry-sounding feel that seems to come from some other ancient alien culture...like space Egyptians or something, but reminding me of one of my favorites, Disney's The Black Hole, just a little. Anyway, without being paired to its visual and gameplay/filmic experience, I find most OSTs a bit boring-ish, since I need the connection to create the rest of the picture as these are usually built to support other material and not necessarily stand on their own. Almost miss the Halo theme, but it's very briefly recalled in some of 117's strings, and while I kind of agree that it's almost a bit like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, I don't miss it all that much since I've only heard it a gazillion times in the past four or five Halo games over the last decade or so.

Couldn't care less about the main soundtrack (don't give a shit about typical game soundtracks), but I'm all about the remixes.

The Gui Boratto remix is pretty sweet, but goddamn do I love Bobby Tank's remix. Caspa's remix is also good for when I'm having my dubstep moodswings.

Alright, I'm starting to come around to this soundtrack. I had to let go of my preconceptions about Halo's music, but I'm starting to enjoy it a lot more after multiple listens.

Gorgeous soundtrack, but if I hadn't gone into it knowing that I was listening to a Halo OST, I don't think I would've known. Kind of a shame.

Well, wouldn't that have been the case for the OST for Halo CE as well, had you listened to it before playing the game? I'm not sure this is a bad thing, assuming the game really is different.

Kinda been listening to the whole soundtrack this week. I really like it, there's not really a song on there that I actively dislike. It really has a good feeling of mystery and exploration that the past games (save CE and ODST) don't have.

So, did anyone other than me notice that the first track on this soundtrack isn't even in the game? I don't remember hearing it, and it's one of my favorite tracks.

God, I thought it said OSDT...

You and me both, I was so overjoyed. But in hindsight it's better 343 stays away from ruining the masterpiece that ODST was.

I bought the special limited edition of the soundtrack and the best thing about it was the art print that came with. It's beautiful! I might put it in a wide glass frame with the Vinyl in the same frame to it's Left.

It makes one short appearance in the level "Shutdown".
The beginning plays when the Chief jumps onto the Lich, but it's quickly drowned out by the game's sound and then replaced by "Revival".

It's a good album, just a shame on how it's presented in-game.

Agreed. Furthermore, there are a number of tracks in the game that simply aren't present in the soundtrack at all. It would be nice to get a Volume 2 release with suites much like the previous Halo soundtracks. I'm not about to hold my breath for such a thing, however.

There's a recent thread on Hitoshi Sakimoto's video game music compositions. Considering Sotaro Tojima is the audio director at 343i, and that Kazuma Jinnouchi composed "117", I think it would be great if Sakimoto was brought on board to compose some tracks for the next Halo games. I think his composition style could suit the series really well.

I love 'Green and Blue', in fact, I love the whole OST. People saying it fails at trying to be a "Holywood OST" are wrong.
