Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

SpOps 7:
I'm so happy they answered my question of whether or not Halsey knew about Chief. I wonder if they'll discuss that more. I'm especially interested in what she'll have to say about Cortana's death.

Im curious where this is heading as well.. I hope it continues to build and escalate in that direction.

Back in June, 2012, Microsoft and Virgin announced a new Xbox Live Tournaments platform. A host of browsable tournmanents accessible via an app, with multiple games from a variety of publishers and prizes including cash for players of all skill levels.

Here's the press release.

Obviously this never happened. Lots of noise and nothing came out of it.

Turns out Microsoft and Virgin have a cosy relationship stretching far back across multiple business fields.

Source

Seems that, with their Xbox Live Tournaments idea crashing hard, they turned to Halo and secured exclusive rights to hold Halo tournaments.

Source

What is not mentioned is that any relation MLG had with Microsoft would be affected, and it was with MLG dropping Halo from it's lineup.

Halo 4 really has been a clusterfuck with so many things.. Shame that MS did this, its just another strike against the franchise.

Slightly touched on a lot of what I had written for the podcast about that tournament.

What I want to add is this. 343 has outsourced player retention to Virgin Gaming, thats what he said his official title is. So to do this he made a tournament saying whoever plays the most wins.

Most people have the ability of foresight, they see their work schedule ahead of time they look at their planned events on the calendar, and realize before the tournament had begun that they already lost. Myself included.

This didnt motivate people to play, it motivated a small amount of players with either no job or a job and a ton of vacation time, and people without any social responsibilities to put a lot of time into Halo. It didn't motivate anyone that only had small amounts of time to play to get onto Halo and in those playlists.

This play the most line of thinking is what kills gamers that tend to have addictive personalities that they cant control. People have died playing games for too long, underlying health issues get exacerbated from a lack of nutrition and sleep and the body will shut down.

Additionally, it didnt incorporate any kind of skill. So skilled gamers said "we have no advantage over these people who have plenty of time"

So you had a small pool of players who had the possibility of winning this tournament...

The better goal for this tournament would have been either Play X games of Halo 4 Infinity Challenge playlists to be entered to win the prizes. Or Win X games of Infinity challenge, this second one is better in my opinion, but may retain skilled players for a lesser period of time.

Even people who can get a few games in every day would be able to get into the tournament and the player pool would widen.

Anyways tl:dr the tournament was dumb. Dumb tournament.

Agree with Juices.

If it's anything Carl (Virgin Gaming Community Manager) is really paying attention to tourneys like AGL and what went wrong with the Truck tourney. It's a start.

since Virgin Gaming has a community manager I was wondering: does Virgin Gaming have a community? where are they? can I browse the Virgin Gaming Community Forums and get a feel for what kind of environment it is?

What do you think?

idk it sounds like there is not actually a Virgin Gaming Community and that Microsoft and Virgin did a marketing deal in which they tried to give the public the impression that Virgin has even the slightest qualification in knowing a thing about videogames

From what I understand they reach out to each game sub community for competition, no forums. Carl has posted on Halowaypoint, gamefaqs forums, and THC from what I've seen.

Don't be blaming just these guys. Microsoft and Virgin are at fault for promoting this type of behaviour.

Not only is this a wrong opinion, but it's also a dangerous one. Maybe your wording came out wring but you can't place someone at fault for someone being dumb. I don't want to get in to a long and drawn out conversation about it but this argument is used a lot without weight I think and removes any personal responsibility.

It's used by a lot in the classic "McDonalds food made me fat" lawsuits or dumbasses "I touched her at a bar because she was asking for it in those clothes" defenses.

Of COURSE I'm going to blame these guys for acting dumb over this contest but I'm also going to blame Microsoft not for promoting that type of behavior, but for ruining a perfectly good truck.

Hahaha, this is wonderful.

Aside from it being the new playlist 95% of the people in the playlist are there for the cheap kills, same as Living Dead. You take away the ability to get easy kills and a shitload of people will leave, just look at the population of Flood.

Right now Grifball is the most balanced gametype in the game... just think about it.

Halo 4 :(

It is fun but still stupid host winning

Multiplayer achievements are still completely possible, just a pain to do.

Once the multiplayer gets taken offline, you'll still be able to get the Campaign achievements, so no rush.
How can you be sure? Are they still supporting multiplayer for other Games for Windows LIVE titles?

Halo 2 dedicated game servers are privately owned and operated, so what exactly is Microsoft shutting down here? A server that talks to them and provides a list? How much of a burden can it be to leave it running? Why not outsource it to another company or community? This whole thing is just disgraceful and even if they are going to release a new Halo 2, why not at least leave this up until there's a proper replacement?

OT: There was apparently a shooting incident at my old high school today. Not sure if anyone was hurt, since the only news about it is coming from my friends that are younger than me via Facebook.

"we need to shut down this master server that uses 10mb of bandwidth a month (year?) for a game published by us that we refuse to sell on any marketplace that even a single person uses"

I still have to get that gun up on that building but I wasnt able to drag the banshee through the tunnel, I tried doing the superbounce to it but wasnt able to get it correct. Shitty achievement. Its the only one I need though.

Something that I find odd about Spartan Ops, if you look at the PGCR it lists your medals along with how many points they're worth, it shows the "points value" of the biggest enemy you killed, but it doesn't aggregate this score and display it. It's clearly tracking a score, it even teases by showing a little, why not show the whole thing and let us compare them?

Would have made a much better challenge too, get the highest score across all 5 missions to win.

It's probably gonna be my last one too.

I Grinded For 7,000 Hours To Win A Halo Truck
To be fair, it's a pretty nice truck. And if the guy is unemployed, I doubt he could come anywhere near earning the cost of something comparable, even with the man hours he put in. In fact, he'll probably have to take out a loan just to pay the taxes on it. He could probably flip it for a nice sum, too, because it is somewhat of a collector's item.

How does it remove personal responsibility? Are you suggesting that blaming one group for making a mistake necessarily alleviates any sort of blame that can be placed on another group?

It's entirely possible to shake your head at someone who harms themselves by taking Microsoft up on these offers while also shaking your head at Microsoft for encouraging that behaviour. Regardless of whether we want to bring any sort of legal responsibility into this, the fact of the matter is that people with power can encourage all sorts of silly behaviour, and it's not unreasonable to suggest applying ethical considerations to that power.

OT but new Dead Space 3 Launch Trailer for anyone interested.

Looks cray.

I decided I was going to stop being a girl and play the series today. Started DS1 and I made it up to chapter 5 and then some regen monster started chasing me around a bloody hospital and it kicked up the fear for me because now I feel like I'm being hunted.

Great stuff all round really I still don't understand much. Scientist's mine a planet. Some of the ship are religions and believe the artefact found in/on the planet is a symbol of that religion. Some how some type of alien that breeds on dead flesh has over run the ship. Some doctor is crazy.

I know he could probably get good cash for it I just think the whole process of its acquisition is funny

I mean if a company runs a competition that is poorly designed, in which the rules allow and encourage people to engage in dangerous, damaging behavior, are they not somewhat liable? I don't think it's so cut and dry one way or the other.

The leaderboard in-game is actually based on score too, not kills/deaths.

I've finished games with more kills than the guy in first place, and I was in second place :/

I guess maybe I'm looking at it too much from a legal standpoint, but even common sense will tell you that these kids are dumb for pushing themselves too far for a contest. Maybe the structure was too poorly designed but if they're dumb enough to hurt themselves over a video game contest then I don't know what to tell them.

I'm saying the responsability here is split between the people doing harm to themselves AND Microsoft and Virgin for promoting this type of behaviour in the first place.

I think it's perfectly reasonable.

I'll give an example.

Over here in NI, a lot of local bars were doing promotions for cheap drinks. As a result, a lot of local folks get even more drunk than usual. More arrests, more hospital visits. More drunks.

The police then asked the local bars to stop doing these promotions and, with invoking any laws, the bars agreed to do so knowing they causing harm but not breaking the law.

Responsible companies shouldn't encourage shitty or destructive behaviour. Lots of folks criticise McDonalds all the time and they've changed how they promote themselves as a result.

I'm sorry but MS and Virgin don't deserve a free pass in this mess.

Yeah I remember that part lol, they really do some excellent things in those games that mess with your emotions. Playing at night, turning all the lights off and raising the volume made the experience all the more legit.

Playing Dead Space 1 in my suite with like 7 other people watching in the right atmosphere was incredible! Haven't seen so many dudes scared from a video game since when RE1/2 first released B]

This guy is literally the laziest head of security I have ever seen. Hey engineer go fix all this shit and kill a billion undead alien things while I stay in this hi tech captains nest flushing the flood out of an airlock every 3 hours and bitching when I have to fight a single of one them.

Ah, Halo 4 Grifball, where it's 5 rounds no matter what the score is, where you can exterminate a team as the ball carrier and then have them instantly respawn right as you're about to score and kill you.

I understand that and think it's cool that McDonalds is now posting nutrition information (or lack thereof, get it? comedy!) but the product hasn't changed.

And that's ok.

No reasonable human being can possibly say "McDonalds made me fat" because that's not the case. They made themselves fat. I don't think MS should have to say "Don't play 20 hours a day because that might be dangerous" but even then people would still do it.

In fact, your logic dictates MS promotes laziness by having a gaming tournament to begin with by even producing a video game. Are they at fault for general obesity by having a video game department? Of course not. Your logic didn't even dictate that but it wasn't a stretch to extrapolate.

After thinking about this and you seeing my stream of consciousness I can see your points, absolutely, but I think the majority of blame goes on these kids.

I don't really want to get into this discussion, but there's a difference between McDonalds simply serving unhealthy food and them running a contest in which they give away 100,000 dollars to whoever can eat the most McNuggets in a week.

Yeah. This.

Both Virgin/MS and the individuals themselves are at fault. The individuals need to make better life choices and MS/Virgin need better competitions that don't encourage terrible behaviours.

If if a person is dumb enough to try that and get sad over the ensuing vomiting, heart disease, and general loneliness from smelling like McNuggets forever then Natural Selection will have a new example.
