I feel like Microsoft must have some really awesome functionality that necessitates the always online in order to sell it to people, otherwise it's just a dick move.

I'm sure I'll still get one, but only for the exclusives, I'd get all the multiplatform games on PS4, which is a complete turnaround from this gen.

Played Halo for the first time in weeks last night. Got stomped on. Not really looking forward to CSR if I can't turn my form around.

I think nextbox is going to be MS trying to transition to the actual one-box to rule them all in your entertainment center. That was their end goal when they introduced the original xbox and I think this might be the natural conclusion of that.

Obviously that is going to frustrate core gamers quite a bit, but we've kind of seen that in the cards for a while now (MS Exclusives have been pretty dry the past two years + kinect).

If that is indeed the direction they are going in, it is a bold play.

I'm betting it's the opposite. It was originally intended to function as always on, but literally every time the rumor has been leaked they have received nothing but outrage and backlash. Honestly you can't find a blog or forum today that isn't stuffed full of people hating this rumor. The reason they haven't said anything is because they're scrambling for either a fix or a way to explain it away.

lthe average person responds to always online with " but the internet never goes down!". kind of ignorant if you ask me.

Or you know, they don't feel the need to rush their more than likely set in stone schedule in announcing the console because of some rumours on the Internet which the majority of potential buyers won't even hear anyway.

Right now they are already limiting their userbase if they do it.
And it is more tailored to the people on the internet.
The pressure aren't the bad rumours alone but the amazing positive feedback of the PS4 that already makes it rounds aloutside of the net.
Microsoft shouldn't wait too long

What a huge shitstorm those tweets caused. Front page of reddit, a bunch of news articles, etc.

If the rumors are true, Microsoft is making this decision pretty easy for me. I'm not dealing with their bullshit

Eh... this set of articles and the message they give to those reading them is .. .. they're not going to be happy about how this has gone today anyway.

A big percentage of important early adopters are certainly hearing all about it right now.

It doesn't seem like it right now, but the second that Microsoft announcement starts, everyone is going to forget these rumors if they aren't true.

Halo 4 was a bigger deal breaker than any of this always online nonsense.

If I have no faith in the future direction of Halo, which I don't, I subsequently lose most of my faith in Xbox. Obviously I don't know what else Microsoft have up their sleeve, but it'd have to be pretty big to win me over at this stage.

I see price as MS's likely big strength.

Speaking of which you didn't respond to my bet challenge, not interested?
It's cool if you're not, don't worry.

And certainly if they're not true, there'll hopefully be a lot of "hell no".

Hell, if it's not too late, MS could still change their mind about it.

What nonsense is this about? Maybe if you only stay on GAF, but I've seen plenty of crap from journos and other users--an announcement without giving the actual console, the actual ship date, or the actual price, along with showing a bunch of features that are planned but might not actually make it into the console?*

*Hell even the PS3 editor on IGN was slamming Sony over some of their moves. It certainly hasn't been universal praise.

That's bullshit.

It's fanboy crap, same as it ever was.

Always online is not really an issue for me. I'd rather it was not part of the next Xbox but if it is then it is. My console is connected to XBL the vast majority of the time anyway.

Same.

So as I say I find this all to be a storm in a tea cup, personally. The bigger problem for me is Halo 4, the bigger deterrent. Could deserve its own thread in time.

-Can't use second-hand games(used games)
-Always Online
-Mandatory install of all games

All rumors at this point but damn if it doesn't sound terrible

Whether they do it or not is rather irrelevant at this point in time. From a marketing standpoint this isn't all that bad however... what are people talking about on the forums and all over the Internet at the moment? It's all the Nextbox and it hasn't even been announced yet - The PS4 isn't the most talked about console right now. If MS aren't as stupid as most think they are, they'll announce day 1 that the console won't be online only. And then what you'll get is a lot of coverage on that fact alone.

I personally think that MS knows better than to limit so many potential buyers by making the console online only... But we'll see I guess.

I don't mind always online (I've been using Steam for years). Happy that mandatory install is a thing (you will be able to start the game before the end of the install, allows developers to maintain a certain standard), and understand why second hand games are a serious problem for the industry (which I want to thrive).

Don't agree with the Kinect strategy, and don't see Halo as a magnet to the console any more. They're my biggest issues.

Halo was the reason why I bought an xbox. So I get what you're saying. Halo is on a decline imo and the main reason why I even play on xbox. Just that alone has me not wanting to buy the next halo or next xbox.

At first I was thinking that way, my system is always connected so I shouldn't have to worry too much about always online. Then a friend made me realize that we are no longer owners of those games. Whenever MS decides to shut down servers for the games, they are useless. Who knows if and when they may do such a thing, So in a sense those games will now be temporary, and we can only play them as long as MS allows us to. I have a pretty large collection of 360 games and it would really suck for the whole collection to be completely worthless because MS decided to shut down the servers.

But then again these are still rumours, we will have to wait for the official announcement before I make any decisions.

The only way Always Online could even, possibly, kinda, sorta, be sold as a good thing is if they could guarantee THEIR OWN servers would be up 100% of the time. It's frustrating enough on current gen when matchmaking goes down for an afternoon. Imagine that happening and you're also locked out of playing anything at all.

Except it's all but certain the console will be online only now. Some random dev basically hinted as much, saying that while he cannot confirm or deny this, maybe you should all pay your isp bills ;)

Coupled with the tweets from the creative director today, the leaked SDK and other sources talking about the installs and online only seems like it's happening.

But I bet Microsoft will limit this knowledge. Meaning they won't acknowledge it is during their announcement because online only is really hard to spin into a positive. I bet someone will ask after the first few days of hype and they'll clarify it.

Why is this a bad thing if the console comes with a hard drive?

Depends on the size

But like me with the 20gb H3 hard drive, I can't install anything(maybe one game) but hell I only play Halo anyway...well I used to

-----

What's the logic behind single player games with always online?

derp microsoft microtransactions of peace

Unless they allow users to swap a generic drive into their box it's going to end up costing us quite a bit more to play games. I imagine most of us have 5+ disc games and DLC, arcade games, apps like Netflix, etc. On the current gen (ie much smaller install files/data) you're already running up against the 200 GB elite model.

If they require installs, which could improve performance etc., but don't start the base model with at least 500GB they either limit the number of games people can buy or jack up the cost of the console to accommodate storage.

I think I'll just wait for a good next-gen game to pique my curiosity before I go replacing my perfectly working 360 and PS3.

Destiny seems like it might be very influential in that decision as more details emerge.

Yeah what a damn fanboy I am or others for being pleased that I was shown games and specs instead how the damn console looks who the fuck cares.

And who expected that they unveil price and shipdate at the first showing has to be pretty confused.

And no I'm not only on GAF and like I said many people outside of the internet I'm talking to aee reeeeeally excited without having a ps3 right now

EDIT: people who post crap like sucks for people with bad internet surely don't even get the point and kissed disasters like diablo and sim city launch.

Ir think about the psn server crash but this time you aren't able to play offline games either. It isn't only about your internet. It is about server crashes, save loss because of disconnects etc

Everyone is so melodramatic. Lol.

Anyone who is flipping out over rumors and not finalized features just needs to chill out instead of foaming at the mouth.
+10.

...

Decided to play some Halo CE tonight. Surprised about how many people were still playing... there are quite few servers with players (with like four or so completely full). CTF is still fun after all these years.

I'm a sucker for new tech, I'll have both consoles day 1.
After the 360 launch I've been wary of buying stuff on day one. I'll probably do it anyway, but will also probably regret it.

I never said "sucks to be you", I agree that even in 2013 always online doesn't work anywhere outside of maybe South Korea, but Sony's conference was filled with as much hot air and bullshit as it ever was, just targeted at the "hardcore gamers".

Yo y'all bitches need to chill bout dat only online shit. It's 2013. If your broke ass can't afford Internet or to live in a place with better Internet, get off yo lazy asses, go to school, get a degree in some shit and move to a place dat matters.

Cue Starcraft 3 being an Xbox 420 exclusive.

The tech is impressive but next gen isn't looking too hot so far. Sony didn't reel me in with any IPs at all last gen and it's looking to be the same for next gen, Halo's doing chemo and while the always online thing isn't a huge issue for me, I'm starting to realize that Microsoft is just that girlfriend that sucks you off just enough to get by so that she can steal all your hard-earned cash.

"Always on"and "always online" are two different things.

People just need to calm down and wait till an official announcement.
