Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

I'm going to. I may not like the answers, but I like trying to pick up on a dev's personality from things like this.

It's the point in the cycle where the dev can't answer even basic questions about the game and instead he has to resort to talking about the general broad strokes.

As insightful as it is, it's quite infuriating for the hardcore fan to listen to just for that reason.

Also, there's a serious lack of asking why decisions are made. Why things are included and not others. The subject of dedicated servers is a good example of this. The journalist should have brought up other first party MS games and pressed the question why was the decision made not to include them when other similar titles do.

On the bright side, Josh Holmes really comes across as passionate for the core Halo experience and trying to preserve it moving forward and that's always reassuring to hear, if not see.

Sorry if this has been asked and, if so, can someone link the post?

I've been at work all day without GAF and apparently I missed a bomb or something. Anyone wanna outline for me what happened? Would appreciate it!

"Dedicated servers won't increase our sales and would instead cost us more money, we think our shitty P2P can do just fine cherry picking players all across the globe. We're sure you'll enjoy your TS game against Mexico, Ireland, Canada and Antarctica. By the way, Antarctica is host."

GameInformer podcast with Josh Holmes Q&A

1) No dedicated servers
2) Armor set unlocks
3) Female spartans
4) Skill will be used in matchmaking algorithms, but no specifics on implementation.
5) Forge is back with changes. No comment on Forge World type maps.

Ah, thanks! I'm surprised at the LACK of pages with all that news.

The more and more I hear about loadouts, the more and more I miss the idea of not having a loadout...

Really hoping E3 gives me something to be happy about

What? I haven't finished listening yet so I'm confused as to what you mean.

Playing on the pirated internet connection of a 7 year old kid living in a Brazilian favela is my favorite part of Halo matchmaking. Such great International Interaction.

If by changes they mean we threw the entire thing out and put in a real map editor - cool. If by changes they mean we added more blocks and a color palette - I'm going to stick my head in an oven.

The way Halo 4 barely meets the most basic of expectations, rather than surpass them in any way marches on unabated.
I know right? I feel this about every recent Halo.

I mean all we get is a full-on 4 player co-op campaign, co-op modes like Firefight, a complete multiplayer suite, theater mode, shareable saved films and custom gametypes, and a level editor, yet somehow, with a straight face no less, they try to convince us this is actually worth 60 bucks. Seriously, have these guys even played another shooter?

The problem with Bungie and now 343 is that these guys just lack any kind of ambition. Its sad really.

"Sure we'll take your questions!" "We can't answer that right now."

i still dont understand why 343 wont give us a rough estimate of when they'll start answering questions..

is it so much to ask for them to say - Progression system - June, Customization - July, Campaign - August...etc...

It would give people something to look forward to and make them constantly check up on 343.

In a multiplayer game in which each design decision is given the utmost thought to maximaze the shitting in the chests of the OG Halo fans in favor of chasing that COD buck that they'll never get anyways, you guys expect them to just go and include something as amazing and requested as dedicated servers??

I think it would do the opposite. People would check out until we approached a date that covered something they actually cared about. Not knowing means you have to check back every day!

I'm gonna be in the extreme minority here, but I don't care about the lack of dedicated servers. The main multiplayer attraction for me is Spartan Ops, which sounds amazing. If the competitive lag is as good as Reach, then I'll be happy.

What? I haven't finished listening yet so I'm confused as to what you mean.

In Halo 3 you unlocked armor in sets that went together.
In Reach you unlocked some armor that didn't really go together.
They were just random pieces.

Spartan Ops - Now with only 2 seconds of button delay!

Uhh, if coop netcode isn't VASTLY improved you're gonna be SOL on the thing you're most looking forward to.

It's far from shitty though. The shitty part is that I can match with all of those players. They can tighten matchmaking restrictions. It is known

Toward the end Josh got asked a question about the new enemy.
He said they are keeping those details close to chest until people play Halo 4.
Sounds like we won't be hearing many campaign spoilers until the game launches <3
Ooooh, I might not go on black out after all.

I don't care much for dedicated servers but a vocal minority do and I can't see the harm in taking the time to explain to those folks why they aren't going to be getting them.

I really don't care, I'd rather have the game's story frame work all explained in minute detail. Like right now.

So kyle, where's your money going? Surely someone as smart as yourself is simply going to walk away now that the game dosn't have what you want. Or are you going to play the "all my friends are playing it" card?

Do you ever post any opinions of your own, or are you content running around commenting on what other people are doing? Clearly I can't express disappointment with the direction of the game (while the game is still actively in development), and also want to try it out upon release. If you really think that way, grab your helmet and your Fisher-Price toys and head on into a padded room.

And yours...

Nah, I just want a Halo game, not a Call of Duty game.

We don't need dedis, we need better matchmaking and host selection. Reach is just leaving is with a sour taste in our mouths. Doesn't CoD search by ping?
I think this post got lost in the pile so I'm quoting since I agree. I'm still pretty psyched for the game.

I always though that if MS was never willing to back dedis in Halo, they could at least let players send their boxes into matchmaking as dedis.

IE, select an option to run as a dedicated server. You have the option to run as a customs lobby with a list your box rotates through (like from the Halo 2 menu beta). Or you can go into matchmaking.

The way it'd work is once you select matchmaking in dedicated mode, a speed test will be performed for which lists your connection is viable for. Most people would probably be good enough to host Doubles and most 4v4 lists. Better connections would be able to host bigger games like BTB.

You then send your box into matchmaking for that list. You gain experience/SPARTAN PONTZ for each game you host successfully. If your dedicated box leaves games too much and forces the game to switch to P2P, you're banned from being a dedi for a while. Give the idlers something more productive to do for the rest of the playerbase if they want cR without actually playing.

I don't know, at my old job a long time ago, when I'd get too busy for gaming I'd just send my box into Rainbow Six 3 matchmaking as a dedicated server, and I'd just chat with the players as they played the game (you could hear and talk to both the teams in dedi mode). It's just disappointing that so many OXbox Live games had a dedicated server option and now on 360, if a game even has dedis it's all just developer-run servers. No real chance for a community to be self serving.

On the contrary, if a player in Ireland plays on dedicated servers, they probably won't have a server in their country, or if they do there will not be many players on their servers, forcing them to play with some fat ping to far away lands for servers with healthy populations and competition.

Hard truths cut both ways Ser Plywood.

I'd love dedi's.

There's no reason they can't have both.

Funny you should say that because I was torn between using an image of Counter Strike or a pic of a man in a straight-jacket, frothing at the mouth in a padded room.

Anyway, being opinionated or passionate isn't a problem, but the sheer bile that is spread from people who one would assume are regular players just strikes me as completely out of whack. If what we know about the series and Halo 4 doesn't rise to the level of your very basic of expectations, I honestly think your very basic of expectations are set to "batshit".

Dedicated servers don't help to minimize latency caused by distance.
The main bonuses are they can be ran on better hardware than 360 with higher networking speeds than the average household.
Oh and no host advantage for us hardcore players to complain about :)
