Attention 343 Studios:

I take back everything I said about your bugs in Reach 1.1. I managed to outdo you in my last update to Cragmire.

I'm hoping multiplayer blowout, showing some Spartan Ops, very little campaign.

I would like this. They should announce that multiplayer and campaign are being sold separately for $30 each. Campaign comes out November 6. Multiplayer disc comes out in July.

No campaign?

How much time is spent making boring encounters and boring linear paths that lead to boring cutscenes? I mean, I'm pretty sure the Skyrim team had less people and less dev time than the Halo 4 team, if another 4 hour long turd gets pooped out, I'd rather they scrap it and make sure multiplayer is amazing. If you want to keep fighting grunts and monkeys with hammers for another decade, feel free. I want multi-only, with lots of maps, and throw in dedis for Christ's sake so there's something to be excited about Halo 4. Maybe they could even hire someone full time to manage the playlists with all those fresh Resources.

Would have also accepted "343's playlist management" or "Halo 4" as alternatives.

Ive always wanted to make a montage where you zoom in and out of earth to different locations, would be pretty awesome. Then you zoom out of earth, zoom through space and zoom into some alien planet for gameplay on Valhalla or something. Would have been awesome to have like a weird Hud overlayed on the in game UI with things like a media player, to add context to the music in the tage. I think I even managed to make it seem like my Spartan was watching Youtube in his helmet at one point lol, it was cheesy as hell but editing wise would have been cool to put it all together.

After Effects makes that stuff so easy, but making the graphics is a bitch. I managed to find some good tutorials for the google earth style zoom and other effects but the effort of putting together all my clips was way too much. Add to that the fact graphically im awful, I never did bother with that tage, if I had like a whole bunch of free time I might give it a go though.

Editing on that global montage is incredible, normally I hate overedited montages but that was pretty cool.

Most of videos have the project files attached so that's half the work done right there

Which is fine if you want your graphics to be instantly recognizable as VC projects you just "ripped off". That cheapens the end result.

Not if you know how to alter the stuff to make it look the way you want. Or just use bits from different projects so that it's not horribly time consuming.

Haha yeah thats what I was using, After Effects itself is REALLY easy (still time consuming!), the hard part is being artistic and like being good with camera angles, being able to actually make the art for custom UI's (I wanted to replace the in game UI), being able to use Maya to make a 3D model of whatever you might want to throw in to composite around and simply finding the right clips and putting them together is tough.

I still want to do it, but learning Maya and Photoshop just aren't skillsets I need anymore, it would be awesome to do it, but a huge time sink considering theres stuff I should learn. :( I have never liked overedited tage's but I have a whole lot of respect for how much work it is lol!

Making the aesthetic fit into Halo is tough though! I couldnt do it personally.

The market doesn't want a AAA MP only game, these tend to flop badly.
At the very least, the Campaign gets the game into peoples hands.

And I disagree entirely, at least right now. I've a lot of love for a lot of the encounters, but Bungie have mined their well and the quality has suffered.
I need to see how a 343i Halo campaign turns out before I ask for something like that.

Yeah that's tough but I meant using his scripts or plugins, timings for animations or lighting settings.

All you'd need to change is textures and color choices

Edit: Maybe we should ask Duncan. Oh yeah, THAT'S RIGHT

It depends what you want to do though, like at the end of that global montage even if he didnt make Earth from scratch:

Where did he get the assets from? Its stuff that should be easy to find elsewhere and use which is actually the hardest to find lol.

I wanted stock footage of a zoom through space, something similar to I guess the stargate effect from those old movies, but I couldnt find anything I could use, and making that from scratch is not happening. :p

you just project some stars in 3d space and fly the camera past it. Add some nebula-like streaky elements and motion blur and you're done.

You do realize the majority of Halo players never touch multiplayer, right?

I think my time with Reach is coming to an end. 16 Days, 18 hours, 50 minutes. Definitely got my money's worth - but fuck.

Matchmaking has essentially boiled down to one of three scenarios 99.9% of the time.

1. Obscenely talented teams/players. MLG teams of 4 etc floating around in Team Slayer - destroying teams of randoms or teams of two's. I tend to hold my own in a 1v1, 1v2 situation and often finish neutral/positive score, but it's ultimately one-sided and unenjoyable after a few minutes.

2. Matched with people from United States, Japan or Mexico. Absolutely zero point even starting the match when playing from Australia. It's a 50/50 toss-up on who gets host. If an Australian pulls host, the Australians decimate the other team until people start leaving. If other country pulls host, my DMR starts firing silly string and I might aswell go and fetch them the power weapons like a house pet. It's so predictable now that I can pretty match guess who will pull host. US/Mexico = Aussie host, early quitters. Japan = Japanese host, every Japanese spartan is a super hero.

3. Get matched with equally skilled players - but lag is so horrible or spikes so badly that the game becomes an exercise in frustration. Even when I pull host (happens fairly often since Internet upgrade 3-4 months ago) there is usually one other player on the opposite team who is spiking or suffering a red connection (closed NAT player perhaps?) who janks around the map, eats bullets like they're chips and is carrying an amazing Assault Rifle complete with the ability to toss a grenade after he dies.

I figured it may have been my Internet connection recently - but it's not. At least 5 of my regular Halo-playing friends have commented on the same issue that's getting worse recently. It's turning into an unplayable mess for us. Whether it's a diminishing Australian/Brisbane? based player pool, or a change in matchmaking, or simply too many players avoiding/preferring etc - the system is simply not working anymore.

I hope Halo 4 captures the COD crowd, has a few million players on at all times and the net code is friendlier to Aussies, I'd love to have a matchmaking system that doesn't simply make me sad each and every match.

I think I only ever go into 5 of the playlists. Not having a 6v6 playlist really sucks. I know Over lately ust jumps ship if the party is headed to BTB and that's looking like a good choice. BTB is slapstick which is fine and all but I really would prefer to be able to go in with 5 buddies and have a slightly more 'competitive' clusterfuck.

I have really been enjoying going into 4v4 playlists with 8 gaffers though. It's very easy to blame Trueskill when I get hammered or something but the matches I've played with gaffers have been incredibly close. There were flag games with 3-0 scores but there really wasn't a whole lot between the teams.

So yeah, the amount of players is probably the biggest thing that determines what playlists I use. If it's Krow and I + someone, we might hit up Multi-Team or some 4v4 one. 5 players and it's Objective. 6+ is where BTB comes in or MLG if we have 8. It's a weird feeling though. I'd rather avoid BTB in Reach as it degenerates to mindless killing. Most other playlists I play are damn near perfect though.

Do you have a source for that? The success of the Halo franchise hasn't relied on campaign since CE. Halo 2's campaign was atrocious, 3's terrible, and Reach awful, yet each was played by more people a year after release than any single player game (as per XBL activity lists). The long tail is what makes money. After you rope HBO kids into another Legendary Edition, you gotta start pumping out those map packs and selling Gold cards, it's the multiplayer activity that keeps the franchise relevant. I mean, how many people are playing ODST right now? How 'bout Anniversary? When's the last time you even thought about them?

343, reveal the Guardian remake in Halo 4 already so I can be excited about something please. Thank you in advance.

I don't know why you're complaining about International Interaction. I've been told by HaloGAF that this is one of the highlights of Halo's matchmaking system.

I'm going to completely disagree with you. To me, Halo is the story. Yeah, multiplayer is what keeps me playing and keeps me coming back, but the story and fiction surrounding the universe is what I come to see day 1.

I liked Reach's story quite a bit, despite it's difference from the books and more "low key" settings. Halo 1-3 were also decent, with 1 still being the best. I am actually really excited to see what a new team does with the story though, they could really fix the issues Bungie had and make something great.

Reading "Ghosts of Onyx" is getting me very excited for what 343 can do with Halo 4's story, and it's Spartan Ops mode. Some of the encounters in the books are awesome, and I only hope 343 can give the games that feel.

Hey, if you want to keep fighting 12 year-olds with controllers for another decade, feel free. :p

"Most people actually play campaign and don't play competitive. It's because the competitive landscape is really intimidating for people. So they prefer to play at their own pace," said O'Connor.

I will say that all the campaigns were more flawed than they should have been, but there's a lot of great in them. I disagree on how you're pushing Campaign to irrelevancy, especially in customer value, the market just doesn't work like that, no matter how much you wish it to.
Honestly thought you were a bit more clued in than that, you normally have a good grasp of the situation (not trying to say this in an insulting manner, just surprised).

I for one are one of those people who plays Halo's campaign MORE than the multiplayer.

Very true, campaign is what sells casuals and hardcore people towards games in general, halo is no different.

Who knows what will happen to H4. I see a heavy push on social and co-op nowadays, I wonder if it will be spartan ops that keeps this iteration of halo relevant rather than PvP.

I believe the campaign is wholly irrelevant to the success of multiplayer shooter franchises (see: COD, Q3A, TF2, CS). If it was that important, the rerelease of the best Halo campaign ever a couple months ago would've sold more than 8 copies. And if multiplayer wasn't as important, why are they turning the game into COD? Just make a great Halo campaign, that's all they need.
