I was barking up that tree a few months ago, suggesting that players start off as Marines rather than Spartan IVs, and as they progress through multiplayer ranks they're eventually accepted into the program and upgraded. The idea was that you could choose to go helmetless if you wanted to show off your face, and some game modes would be Spartans vs. Marines so you really feel like you're up against a tough opponent (Juggernaut, or example, or Marine zombies vs. Spartans).

Didn't suggest scanned faces though.

Is the "People would scan their parents / teachers / classmates and pretend to shoot them" argument we heard way back when Rare was trying to do this with Perfect Dark still valid or has the world moved on?

I imagine the problem now is "Oh look, another guy who scanned his junk".

They're not really good reads in a vacuum. Gotta want some universe building context to like em, and even then, they take forever to get going.

Under Preferences, there's a row titled "Thread Arrows Go To" where you can select the "First Unread" option.
