Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

+100 points or whatever will never be an incentive to me to pick up a flag that renders me extremely one dimensional in my gameplay options. Spartan Points will never be an incentive for anything. The inability to juggle the flag in Reach’s CTF drastically reduced my time picking the thing up.

You know what makes me want to pick up a flag? Fun, which is what flag juggling was. I’m thinking back to Sandbox CTF in BTB; the pure joy in grabbing the flag and looking upwards as you jump off the top of the enemy’s base in an effort to launch it as far as you possibly can... it lands just short of the OS pillar, you engage an enemy at rocket plinth, take him down with the BR, snatch that flag and continue juggling it to your own bases Carbine, look up and chuck it to your teammate for the cap. That’s what makes me excited to pick up a flag. The changes in Reach and now Halo 4 to CTF are only succeeding in making me avoid it more and more.

Can you imagine MLG CTF games with no option to drop the flag? It’s going to look so fucking pedestrian.

Why the complaints about Cortana? Because she looks like a woman? Why is that ‘pornish’? Want to know what is pornish? The names of 343 employees. Lindsay Lockhart and Mackenzie Mason. That doesn’t mean I think they gobble cock on camera for a living, it means those sound like porn names. That they’re their real life names is amazing and their parents are cool.

My post was largely about rank, but I completely agree with gameplay being a solution. That is, the key to making people want to pick up the flag and go for the objective is to make picking up and carrying the flag inherently fun and awesome (rather than just extrinsically awesome because it gives you metagame points). Removing your ability to do anything else but carry the flag, handing you a short-clip pistol as meagre compensation, and meanwhile stitching a target to your forehead is not a viable way to do this. Exciting music isn't it either. It could blast fucking 'Eye of the Tiger' all the way home to base and most of the population would still not going to want to touch the thing.

I'm not sure it'd be more fun- but for me

I don't really mind the auto-pickup or the inability to drop separately, but together I think they are a bit much. I think this combo would give you the most freedom.

Flag carrying was never a big problem for me- it was just that your average CTF game was so unorganized and selfish. I feel like the changes made for H4 can bump up the standard of your average game a bit, but at the expense of those incredible games where you remember a capture 2 months later.

The actors also look like they're doing a great job of method acting or really subsuming their character for the role. This could be the campaign of the xbox 360 generation if it's as good as these snippets make it look.

Also, loving the ball throwing, something that expands on the gameplay instead of limits (for a change in Halo 4). I was really excited until I realised it was Oddball and not Assault. Assault will be brilliant with these changes. I can't help but feel Oddball will be the same as it ever was in random MM matches: find the most concealed place on the map and crouch there for as long as you can.

No CTF juggling/dropping/classic option in CUSTOMS is really really really shocking if true.

That line was actually the one I'm most worried about, I guess we'll see how it plays out.

okay not to go team downer, but does anyone at 343 realize people are just going to throw the ball back and fourth to farm points?

if the matchmaking system is anything like reach people can just setup two people defending the people farming, and just switch off every game...

The drive home let me organize my thoughts a bit, which I'll take some time to put down tomorrow in a bit of a mega-post or two. Bulleted lists may ensue.

Beyond all the remaining questions and issues, I arrive home with an overall sense of relief about Halo 4. I sometime joke - without actually joking - that all Reach got wrong was player movement, shooting, melee combat and the grenades. I feel pretty good about all those things in Halo 4, which is to say the core of the game is really solid. For all the other moving parts and worries and open questions, that core is there and it's a good one. It's something Reach simply never had, IMO, and it's for that reason that I'm primarily hopeful about the game.

so no inertia what so ever? Does it feel to floaty.....
Seem funny they make ever thing sound more metaly and heavy.....:/ but no weight to it...

I'm torn on the new model for Cortana. At times she just looks more naked, but it doesn't feel necessarily objectifying or sexualized. It's just a matter of fact, more realized image of what she was always supposed to look like. But then at times she does seem overtly sexual, and sexualized, and it's at those times that I don't like the new direction. I hope that makes sense.

They did say she was the most human character in the story... i loove her design looks amazing....

it is but thats what happens when you loose Marty... I really dislike it too, it was too perfect in Reach

Keep Juggernaut the same from Reach because its terrible.

When you go into a Hill in KOTH invisible walls come up so you can't leave the hill once you're there. And you can only use a pistol in the hill.

- CTF changes were not explained at all aside from "more teamwork!".
- Oddball throwing looks like it could be abused to hell and back.
- Fuck off with your Grifball.
- A Banshee, Tank and two Gauss Hogs on a relatively small map seems like overkill.
- I wish the announcer would shut up already. And when he does say something he should calm the fuck down.
- There's a shitload of weapons in the game but no sight of the Grenade Launcher...
- Ruh roh
- As much as I liked the campaign vidoc they should have really just done a multiplayer one instead.
- Please don't encourage Warthog driver to try and get splatters, that's exactly what they shouldn't do because that shit will get you killed.

No flag juggling or even dropping, plus the lack of a ranking system has soured my opinion of Halo 4 more than a 10 minute discussion about the story can remedy. We've still had no clarification for these big, meaningful changes either.

Frankie's lost a shit ton of weight, too. 343 lookin' trim.

"YOU HAVE THE BALL" is the most inane statement I think I've ever heard in a videogame. It's like TV shows which have audio description for the visually impaired except that actually makes sense.

Any Gaffers use the sticky detonator at PAX? Thoughts?
 
Its a real positive that the flag cap is worth 100 points

That was something that I really wanted to be changed in Halo 4, so happy with this

A solo cap in Tribes is 2000 in game points, an assisted cap is 1000
A kill is worth 100, it really encourages playing the flag and winning as being more important than kill farming

I cant wait to see people betray me when im about to flag cap for the +100 :(

This is from Eli's video, at the very beginning of the game, off initial spawn. He spawned with Regen, but was given the option to switch to Thruster. Probably a bug.
 
Make betrayals worth -110 points. Simple! Metagame points solve everything!

(Unless/until people don't care about your metagame...)

To be honest, I cant believe we are now seeing things like the Binary Rifle, the Incinerator, the Suppressor and have no idea what they are. Luckily they all look generic enough where Pax goers can pick them up and use them interchangeable as if they where simply Beam Rifle/ Rocket Launcher/ Plasma Rifle respectively, but why make such identical weapons? Why not have a vidoc or even simply a text write up of the new weapons they are showing off? Why make us rely on off screen youtube videos? Why have a campaign vidoc when most people want to avoid campaign spoilers?

The salt levels are high in this one.

Well the campaign looks to be shaping up nicely.. very interested in 343's take on the story.. I'm more interested in the campaign and spartan ops than the multiplayer to be honest..

Still have to read the Halo books after Halo: Evolutions... i need to catch up..

I wonder if the multikill order has been changed. Maybe Killtacular has returned to 4 kills. Have we seen more than a triple kill in H4 videos?
 
At the end of the day, we're largely left with the same impressions: Campaign will be awesome, Multiplayer keeps changing into something that makes you pray for some damn good classic playlists.
 
The good core Halo gameplay may very well be there but I'm very worried that stuff like AA's, modifications, changed classic gametypes and all other kinds of fluff added to the game will ruin that core gameplay.

Also, steizer sounds really annoying in this game.

Man, people here wanted a toggle to turn off the +100 stuff, I didnt care about that, but I just want a toggle to turn off the ancillary 'rewards' its going to get annoying to have medal announcements every so often simply because people on my team did stuff.

If you aren't looking for spoilers frame by frame, you will not see them.

Borderlands 2 only released their big explanation video of all their mechancinc about 18 days from their launch. Multiplayer ViDocs aren't needed right now really.

What is needed is more sandbox videos like the Covie/Promothean weapons and other elements.

Ah now, Borderlands 2 has been having regular good trailers and press coverage since last PAX, the marketing for the two games is worlds apart.

1) One is an in house sequel by an experienced studio, the other a new one with experienced people
2) One is the big ticket title for a 3rd party publisher across 3 platforms, the other is the revitalisting of a the key franchise for a first party
3) Both are still $60 in the end

It's extremely disappointing that the multiplayer is turning out the way it is. I feel like the simplicity that was once in Halo is gone, and in it's place is an abundance of unnecessary announcer lines, medals, rewards, perks, and AAs.

All I wanted in Halo 4's multiplayer was a successor to Halo 3's. But for some reason I'm getting a sequel to Halo Reach.

This reminds me of one of the big problems I have with AAs in Reach, you're stuck with it after you choose it. If they're so adamant about keeping AAs, I hope they've actually made it possible to swap them out while you're alive this time.
