Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I'm not digging Slayer Pro at all, DMR battles just do not have the same magic that BR fights did, it really just feels completely random due to the blooming crosshair. As Mayhem said, not spawning with a pistol and only one frag nade makes Swordbase an exercise in frustration.

OHH SHIT!!!

Noice. <3 you Bungie.

Stockpile with only one teammate is not fun.

With more than one, not bad. I see a lot of people picking up (my) flags and putting them back down so they score though. Does that work?

yup. I'd prolly wouldnt mind it if they decide to add a pistol secondary.

But yeah. I enjoy slayer and slayer classic MUCH more.

I was playing a game of slayer on powerhouse a few days ago and while I was shooting a guy with his jetpack out of the sky I saw someone coming up behind me on my radar, only to dissapear after I dodged a rocket coming from his teammate. So I fired up theatre mode and saw this:

Arena rating was mid 1500's yesterday iirc correctly.
Then the beta went public, everything went crzy for a while (well-documented) and when I tried to play games later I had 2 absolutely dire, laggy as hell (rest of the beta has been perfect) matches. I do believe it was my connection that was the problem at the time. Seemed fine this morning though :-)

The more I play of this the more meh it gets..

I just tried to quit a game because I couldn't even move (just kept jumping back to the same place) and instead my whole xbox froze.

Report it - whole purpose of a beta is to lock down stuff like that.

After some annoying games (when it worked) with the new people last night (winning a game 50-13 is nice :D, but no-one seemingly knowing how to play 1-flag is not) I cannot wait to get back home in 9 hours and play with some gaffers again.

BUNGIE - PLEASE ADD JUST ONE THING AND YOUR MATCHMAKING WILL BE PERFECT

Please add an option to avoid players who are in party chat... no point in being able to select team players if when you are matched up with a 'team' and everyone is in chat.

I would prefer them not to allow party chat in playlists like Arena. I mean, you can still team chat, so it isn't like a person is forced to remove themselves from their friends in-game.

So first day rating was 1658, and so far second day rating is at 1679. I dunno where that will put me. Thermite so far has been the only dude I have seen hit 1700. I am going to try get that above 1700 tomorrow. I think I CAN, but not sure about since people still dont vote for PRO. I am hoping its not going to turn into what Team Slayer was in Halo 3, where some teams wouldnt veto AR start Slayer just because they knew once they got the map locked with their weapons the team that is spawning with the ARs is practically fucked. So VOTE for PRO damnit. I am loving the game play and general feel of this game with no radar.

So I fired up the beta lastnight, played a ton of games and had some good fun. Now would it make me a bad person if I said battlefield bad company 2 multiplayer is way more fun? I love halo but it just feels the same with a couple new hooks.

I'll still buy it because I love the series but everything just feels and looks exactly the same. I think Ive just moved on from the franchise. I'm glad bungie decided to do something else

Oh yeah. People in party chat are really annoying cause you would like them to at least try and communicate.

They could add a social setting called silent killers and whenever you're in a party, the silent killer social setting is automatically activated

-UI is somewhat confusing, but I am getting used to it.

-Swordbase is hilarious, mainly when you have stealth and the sword. You don't need to know what's going on, you just strut around inside waiting to backstab people.

-Elite Slayer is awesome. I love rolling around people who are too slow so that I can smack them in the back of the head. Also, people seem to forget that you spawn with a plasma pistol. Use it people!

- Lag has been mostly negligible.

- People suck at stockpile, but only when they are on your team.

-Grenades are crazy deadly.

also, BC2's weapons feel horrible :P

I think you've got it the wrong way around. Slayer Pro in Reach is the competitive equivalent of TS in Halo 3: once a team gets the power weapons, especially on Sword Base, you're screwed.

Reach Team Slayer spawns you with the two best weapons in the game: pistol and nades. That plus radar gives you a fighting chance against a set-up team.

I haven't played Slayer Classic yet, but is it just Team Slayer with no weapons on the map? Some combination of that and Slayer Pro would be much better. Or just remove the short-range weapons from the map.

Slayer Pro does not feel good at all. It doesn't help that Slayer pro becomes a complete camp fest on sword base. Like Ram said it doesn't feel quite right.

Add a pistol or ill never vote for pro. I wouldn't mind a radar either.

:lol :lol

Go play Slayer Classic. You want radar and you are complaining about camping?

Leave the Pro as it is. It only becomes a camp fest if you want it to become a camp fest.

One big gripe:

With the default voting option being the first, I often find that many players forget to vote, and thus the first (often worst) game type and map is chosen by default. I REALLY hope Bungie changes this in the final game so that it doesn't automatically select anything, so that people who aren't paying attention don't rig the vote accidentally.

What makes this particular dilemma worse is the short time between games, and the lack of audio indication that the new vote is up.

Yup, yup, and yup. The gunplay in 3 feels better. Really hope they consider tightening it up. I don't feel like the reticule bloom makes combat more fun.

Some quick gameplay complaints:
  • Grenades too strong and radius to large for how slow spartans move. I want plentiful but balanced grenades. A grenade toss should be a risk/reward move where it's a risk because you can't fire while tossing it and you have to be deadly accurate to get a hit but the reward is you'll inflict massive damage on the player.
  • Melee recharges much too fast, while I like that the AR + melee combo is nerfed I still don't like it's implementation in Reach. Probably would like it more if the double melee wasn't more effective then shotting to melee or melee to shooting.
  • Jump needs to be higher. It's one thing that made Halo, Halo. I honestly don't ever think about jumping unless I'm going over geometry now. Stuff like the jetpack (which I don't ever use) get players off the ground from time to time but it feels more like CoD or Gears where everyone is ice-skating on layered planes of the arena rather than Halo 2/3's organic vertical movement. It's one thing I really like about playing as the elites, the movement feels much better.

I feel more fucked with the Pro weapon start than the combo of magnum and AAs. Starting with only the DMR leaves weapons like the sword, hammer, and shotgun to run rampant. I feel extraordinarily vulnerable with the Pro spawns (similar to 3's AR spawns) but aint afraid of nothing when I got the pistol in my claws.

This is really annoying, I agree. But I think that's already been said so I assume they are thinking up something, or maybe as time goes on people will learn how to use it.

Uhm what?

You guys should perhaps just play the vanilla Slayer or Slayer Classic. Since you clearly cant handle Pro. There are 2 other gametypes in there. I dont understand how the fuck are you guys complaning about camping without radar.. wouldnt a team with radar camp more effectively? with the grenades and power weapons? I love that everyone has just 1 nade, no more spamming till you kill someone. I HATE nades. it allowed noobs to get kills when they didnt deserve it.

My thinking was simple.... what's the point in being able to select how talkative people are, whether they are team players and how polite/rowdy they are... if you get matched up with them and everyone is in party chat.... kinda makes the other options pointless.

I really hope they can fix it so it will at least try and match you up with people without party chat.

My hope was that by being able to make the selections above, you'd be more likely to match up with some really cool people.

You probably just havnt gotten the DMR down yet. I hardly had sword or hammer running rampant in my games of slayer pro so far.

so get better with the DMR, you noob

You are getting mad and making insults for no reason. I don't like having two nades in slayer and slayer classic either.

It just feels more like a balanced game in slayer and slayer classic. The fact that there is no pistol in Slayer Pro is probably what pisses me off the most. So a simple fix and I wouldn't mind voting for Pro.

But you're lying to yourself if you think that sword base is a good slayer pro map.

Another big problem is hammers, shotgun, and rockets become WAY too powerful in slayer pro. Why? No radar, no pistol.

No one said you have to like Slayer Pro. Everyone has their own opinions. Just pick the right gametype you want to play.
That is why I said. You should vote for Slayer Classic. And leave Pro the way it is for people who want to play it the way it is. But pistol secondary would be a great addition.

I feel that stuff like reticle bloom has helped balance out the weapons, making the longer range weapons harder to use (i.e. you need to learn how to make them effective) which actually makes the other weapons more useful, because people haven't mastered all the range weapons yet.

After poking around the Halo Reach Beta files, I may have ruined some things for myself. Nothing major, but there's some character names and such in the file names.

Also: Halo Reach's texture resolution hasn't really increased from Halo 3 in most places. But somehow it looks a lot better?

mescalineeyes said:
the texture filtering has.

Drastic change from 3 to Reach, then. I was sure that the texture resolution was increased. But nope, still 512x for most of the things. Surprising. Bungie did damn good :lol

Bungie's skyboxes have outdone themselves. They are RIDICULOUS. If you just pull the camera around in theatre mode there's just a silly amount of detail, flowing waters, layered backgrounds etc.

Actually, I take back what I said. The texture resolution may have stayed the same, but there are a lot more textures overall. Things that would generally have ONE texture for multiple things(such as armor perms), now have multiple textures, all at 512. So that is quite a jump.

Fuck yeah.

They make the game more balanced, but no one can possible say they make the game more fun. On some guns like the Sniper I feel that they should have just raised the RoF, bloom on the Sniper will allow some people to get lucky sometimes which isnt good design.

Quite a few balancing issues that I hope will be sorted :

DMR has ridiculous aim-assist,

Giving everyone the ability to go invisible is a bad design choice,

Sprint + Hammer makes you practically invincible,

The melee lunge is Halo 2 worthy, Oh and BXB Bungie? Seriously?

1 Flag CTF on Sword Base, The attacking team reaching the flag before the defending team? Design flaw!

Apart from that it's a quite fun game, although a little too Halo 3 for me.

Plus the 'detail textures' on everything.

I disagree, it's much more fun for me when I walk across a level without getting 7 people all training their BR's on my head.

There have been detail textures since Halo 2. I did notice that the ones in Reach are pretty good in game, though. Halo 3 just kind of abused detail bumps for no reason.

Also, just got to the vehicle textures, and so far everything is 1024x. Twice the resolution that Halo 3's vehicle textures were.

EDIT: Most of the weapon textures are 1024x as well. So, it was just the individual armor pieces that were 512x. Which is still a lot better than Halo 3, because it's split into pieces, instead of being thrown into one single texture per armor set.

Can your current arena ratings be viewed on bungie.net? just want to see if yesterday's bugged up games effected my 1565 or whatever I had before odst users nuked the servers :lol

I am not a fan of this at all.

For a start, I really do not like Bungie's continual tinkering of the controls. I was so used to the original Halo, then had to force myself to adapt to the changes made in Halo 3 + ODST. For example, the function of X being swapped with RB. Now however, they have switched back which once again forces me to adapt. In addition to that, melee has now been moved to the newly vacant RB button. It is annoying.

Other than that, it plays enough like Halo. I am not digging the introduction of a sprint button though - it feels too much like the Call of Duty franchise is seeping into the Halo franchise. More instances of other franchises seeping into Halo are the classes - they are such a hollow attempt at a class system and simply adds crap to the game. Most annoying is the guard class which people abuse in CTF flag recapturing. As for weapons, it's basically Halo 3 again with the addition of more single shot weapons (which absolutely blow since it takes too many shots to kill someone with a full shield).

I thought Bungie had promised that Halo: Reach was going back to the roots of Halo - instead, they seem to have added more crap and meddled with more things that didn't needed meddling with. This ain't my daddy's Halo - it's the Halo equivalent of Modern Warfare 2.

Okay, they got done rendering.

Three films, all from my final game tonight. The first is how I'm coming with the pistol. A few wild shots, but I think I'm starting to tame the beast. It was what felt like an epic stand to hold the flag in a dangerous place.

Flag Defense

This one is just evil. I almost - almost! - feel bad. If camping the flag on Powerhouse with the rockets wasn't enough, I get my hands on the hammer and just do filthy, filthy things with it. In particular, the poor sap at about 25 seconds to go in the round, and my murderous spree at the end. Red, Blue, whatever. I am unrepentant.

Going Camping

And finally, why I love (it when other people use) Armor Lock. Thanks for the flag, sucker!

Anyway, yeah, grenades are definitely way overpowered. I managed to throw a grenade a dude using the AR, got his shields down to almost nothing, then killed him by getting a couple of headshots off him with my Nerfle. He landed only a couple of bullets on me with his AR, manages to throw a suicide grenade, and kills me. :/

For all of 20 minutes before you readjust. With all the new stuff the controls had to be changed, keeping them the same just so people wouldn't be confused for a tiny portion of their playtime would be stupid.

I am thoroughly enjoying seeing people whine about things that can and probably will be changed, most seem to forget this is a beta for a game that's still a good ways out.

That was my only complaint with the game visually as it looks so much better than Halo 3 in every aspect...campaign's gonna look amazing, we love you guys. :D

About the game now I'm not an old Halo player like most of the guys here but I really liked what I played yesterday - especially the magnum, the DMR and the sprint ability are really cool...hopefully I'll have time to play more today.
