Okay, I feel I've played enough to post some impressions. Sorry that it's not organized like most professionals here.
Sword base is VERY confusing, especially since it looks so samey, but I think that once I learn all the areas, it will be an alright map. Powerhouse is great though. I love it.
However, Oddball is completely broken on Powerhouse. A halfway competetent team could hole up in the lockers and the team would have no chance. I wonder how and if they can fix that.
I personally think the starter weapons are nearly perfect.
The pistol could use a few more bullets, but not many more, and I wouldn't be all that bothered if they didn't add any in the final game. Those who know how to use that thing are deadly, and giving it too much ammo could make it overpowered in the right hands. As of now, it's powerful but allows almost no room for error. You wanted your skill weapon Gaf, you have it.
At first I thought the AR was weakened but with the new health system, I think it works very well. Halo 3 has taught us to chip away at an opponent just for a bit, and then melee him, but with the new health system, this tactic is suicide (Yes, I still use this tactic out of pure instinct, and I pay dearly for it). The proper way of using it would be to keep shooting until shields pop, then, and only then, melee the opponent. If a person is skilled enough with the pistol, he can headshot the AR wielder before he chips away ALL his health, but this is difficult in the heat of battle. As such, the AR is far more reliable in close range combat, but a skilled pistol wielder can still make it through.
The DMR's power is fine. The issue, I think, is that everyone is aiming for the head ala BR, but a much better tactic would be to aim at the body and rapid fire so that you have a greater chance to hit him, and only once his shields pop, only then do carefully aim for the head. I realize I'm only repeating what has already been stated in that tips video, but I feel it's THE reason why the DMR is perfectly fine the way it is.
My only complaint is the covenant counterparts. The Plasma Pistol obviously operates differently from the Magnum, but am I suppose to be noticing a difference between the DMR and Needler rifle or the Plasma repeater and the AR? I realize they eat shield while human weapons eat flesh, but differences beyond that seem cosmetic to me. Maybe I'm using them wrong. Can anyone offer an explanation?
My chief complaint is the melee system. It's far too easy to melee twice, and it definitely needs to be slowed down. However, bringing back the Halo 3 health system would be stupid, as the starter weapons are clearly designed with this new health system in mind. The grenade could stand to do a bit less damage as well, but it wasn't as bad as the horror stories here made it out to be.
However, I SUCK with any and all power weapons.:lol The beta reminded me exactly why I always do campaign before going into MP. I suck with anything I'm not familar with, even if it's should rightfully take out any basic weapons. However, of the power weapons I did use, Sniper felt nice. I really like the hammer animation. I don't think we need to worry about the focus rifle being over powered at all. What DOES need to be nerf is the plasma launcher That thing is ridiculously powerful. Even of they take away biped tracking, I think it'd be overpowered. Vehicles, especially slow moving ones, will get slaughtered by this thing. I have no idea how one would nerf it. I'd actually consider taking it out altogether.
I'm also worried about some things being combined with Armor abilities. Sprint with Sword/Hammer/Shotgun seems difficult to counter. Besides that though, I also think the AA are fine as they are. I was actually worried that Armor lock would be overpowered, but I don't see how. If a person goes into Armor lock, just watch them and stay away from them. I haven't really been killed because of the armor lock yet (aside maybe from other players who attack from a different angle while the armor lock guy waits.
The biggest issue in the beta, besides maybe the new melee system, is the HUD. I echo the sentiments that it's difficult to see your retinal. I echo Ghaleon's complaint that player feedback can be improved. I often can't tell where I'm being fired at from at times. The weapons could also have a bit more of a kick to them (Focus rifle is great at this though. That sound it makes is terrifying)
Ghal, could you try to explain exactly what doesn't feel like Halo to you? The way you described it all made me think that it felt way too grounded, but while I agree that it's more grounded (and I do agree this is a bad thing, I love the floaty jump), I still think it very much feels like halo. I know you don't like the melee system, but it too feels very much like Halo to me. You said before that it's hard to articulate just what it is that's wrong about it, but I'd appreciate if you tried.
Overall impressions are great. I love it. LOVE IT. But things can be better, as I mentioned this before, and hopefully bungie will address the issues I have, but I very much love what we have right now. I need the full game. Now.
