Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I like the over -powered grenades. They feel like Halo 1 grenades. Although I'm sure in the greater scheme of things, they will probably get toned down a bit for the retail version.

Do we have a time table for the other modes to come online? I skimmed the thread and the OP, but didn't see anything. I can't wait to get back in the Warthog. Plus, 2 maps is a little repetitive. Although swapping play lists does help.

I just need more Reach.

S'okay. Just had a nice chat with Sage. You will be happy come Friday. (Unless Sketch scoops me first!)

will you get sage to go into detail about the work he has done to fix accidentally scoping? (by the way, it doesnt work! :lol)

Probably a great deal. Ditto with the AR - it sounds and feels like a beast, but it isn't.

It could also be because we can see health now, and we couldn't in Halo 3. So when I see a grenade strip not only my shields, but knock off half my health, I think they're crazy powerful. But in Halo 3 they also stripped shields - and we couldn't see how much health, because that was hidden. I'm waiting for Urk to mention in a BWU that the core grenade strength is identical to Halo 3's, and it's all perception.

That said, I think Sage mentioned in a podcast that the damage for the grenades does not trail off as steeply around the radius of the blast, so they do a bit more further away from the grenade that in Halo 3. But I suspect not as much as has been made out to be, including myself. I watched this vid from last night again, and I'm surviving (and dodging) grenades galore.

That looks very comparable to Halo 3 grenades to me.

Which one? Half of those are already scratched off my list.

Change is hard. :p
I seem to remember that in Halo 3, your invisible health also regenerated fully, admittedly at a much slower pace than the shields, whereas Reach will only ever round up to the nearest third and regenerate to there. Am I remembering correctly?

I think that's correct. So not having recharging health is probably also a big factor in Reach - a lone grenade will kill you after taking some health damage, but with a full shield. I hadn't thought of that, but it's a great point.

The DMR and pistol are fine the way they are, aim for the head not the crotch.

They're both fine damage-wise, but the whole reticule system clearly doesnt work that well.

It's supposed to encourage players to match the rhythm of the reticule bloom, but the easiest and most effective way to use both weapons is to hammer off four body shots as fast as possible, reticule bloom be damned, and then take an extra fraction of a second to line up that last headshot.

I also had a rather rollercoaster, knee-jerk style reaction to the Beta at first but I think I've truly fallen in love now, it's a glorious, glorious game.

A lot of my complaints from the beginning don't seem as big a deal anymore either now that I've learnt to adapt to them. There's definitely a steep, pistol shaped learning curve, but once I got past that it's one of the most satisfying mulitplayer games I think I've ever played

the prospect of new maps and gamemodes both in the next couple of weeks AND for the final release only makes me more excited.

Well in, Bungie. Well in.

Am I the only one who absolutely sucks at Slayer Pro? Like I am literally always one of the worst players in the game, when during regular Slayer I'm usually in the top 2. Being on my team during Slayer Pro is a sure-fire way to lose :lol For some reason everyone is also all of a sudden ALWAYS voting for Slayer Pro, so it's impossible for me to win...

Anybody else like this or am I all alone? ;_;

Armor lock on flag returns is getting vey annoying. Armor lock spamming is just as bad.

You know you can still pick the flag up right?

Play with AL yourself and you figure out its weaknesses, which makes it easier to combat when confronted with it.

Finally got into the beta.

Maaaaan do these weapons suck. :lol But honestly I like it. With all the quick think-or-death pacing of all other FPSers, it's nice that I have a chance to survive an encounter. I'd actually prefer it this way if grenades and swords weren't so effective.

Yeah. Hypothetically if you have 200 health, split into 140 shield and 60 health, and a grenade does 170 damage when at your feet, it'll knock you down to 30 health. If you then recover your full 140 shield, you'll have 170 health total, and another dead-on grenade will kill you outright.

lol no. All the weapons seem to be useful.

Bungie needs to patent their netcode then outsource it to other developers for billions of dollars because Reach's netcode is by far the best I've seen. I have smoother matches WITHOUT good connection on in Reach than I do on Battlefield's dedicated servers.

Amazing.

Ghaleon, Day 1: Fuck these guns. Weaksauce. Grenades am overpowered.

Ghaleon, Day 2: Except for the AR, and the Plasma Repeater, and the Bacon Wave, and the Nerfle.

Ghaleon Day 3: Okay, that DMR does some sick shit.

Ghaleon, Day 4: Grenades are the same as Halo 3.

Ghaleon, Day 5: The pistol...it speaks to me...

You are at day one. Strap in.

I don't believe this at all. I die with one frag in Reach with full health and everything. That doesn't happen in Halo 3.
Yes it does. You're just more used to dodging them. A frag at your feet in Halo 3 is an instant kill.

Truth. I haven't played what I would consider to be a laggy game yet. It's incredible. Leaps and bounds better than any other console game out there.

Just had my first Headcase medal. I had to check Bungie.net because I had no idea what it was for. :lol
I got one in SWAT at the same time as a killing spree, so I thought it was for a killing spree of headshots at first :lol

So, after 17 games of Arena, moral of the story is that I enjoy sneaking up on people with the Stalker class too much :lol

The first few rounds I had in the beta I was having absolutely no fun. Then a friend and I had a round where we completely locked down defending the flag with armor lock + invisibility. It was pretty hilarious how many people completely forgot that there was an invisible guy around and just beelined for the flag once the armor lock went up.

After that, everything clicked and I started loving the beta. The AR sucks a ton compared to how amazing it feels, and I'm still really shaky after playing no real online Halo for a year or so, but overall it's pretty great.

I'd also like to be able to see on the commendations page something on mouseover to tell me how many of the medals I have/how many I need for the next rank. Also, what is the "do something impressive" commendation? The medal is perfection, but I certainly haven't gotten any of those.

Same. Remember the Halo 3 Beta? It was pretty laggy. 6v6 was a mess. Got a lot better for ship, though.

Reach makes Halo 3's shipping netcode pale by comparison. And it's beta. 0_o

No.

The radius and core damage of nades in Reach is undoubtedly higher than in Halo 3. Hence why so many people noticed it right away, continue to notice it everytime they play, and are bitching about it everywhere.

same.
There have been multiple occasions where one frag grenade kills me at full health and even if you sit on a grenade in halo 3 you don't die. Also give me the halo 3 grenade bounce back (at least on concrete floors).

Grenades feel fine to me. They're supposed to be deadly explosives, not a tickle on the bum like in every other Halo.

When Bungie said they'd ripped out the engine and rebuilt it, were they only talking about graphics and not physics, or did they mean everything? Because I'm still getting this old chestnut every now and again, and as hilarious as it might be makes me wonder.

Nope, just takes out your shields.

Right now, with Reach's frags, if you have full shields and full health, they'll take out all of your shields and a couple blocks of your health so if you have anything less than full health and a grenade ends up at your feet, you're dead.

That part I like. The difference: in Halo 1, you could TSK with the Pistol, in Reach.. It requires two more shots, and the ROF is much slower if you want to be precise. Hence the higher grenade usage in Reach than in CE.

Have they changed the pistol in the last 24 hours? :lol
I'm fucking wiping the floor with it now.

Over 3k Halo 3 games here and I have never seen it happen.

Got to play a bit last night, when the servers would allow. It feels like Halo, which for me, isn't exactly what I was hoping for. I was really wanting something that felt re-tooled, and updated. Still feels like more of the same, just with the addition of the load outs.

Really need to give the beta a shot with peeps I know tho. Random's just suck. I haven't missed the Halo community much. :/

I'm already a fan of the pistol. Spam, then be accurate when shields are down.

I don't mean the guns aren't useful, it's just that it takes a little longer to kill people now. Which I don't mind, I kinda like the slower pace.

The semi autos do kinda stink..
