Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Yeah, when I was playing split screen and my friend suggested that they could I just paused, threw a frag at my feet, and waited. It didn't kill me, but did a hell of a lot of damage.

Are close plasma grenades still a 1-hit though?

Yes.

Also, how long does it take for BNET to update your stats?

Wow. I thought I was over Halo, especially since I thought Halo 3 was underwhelming and ODST was solid but not exceptional. But Reach is awesome already. I'm having as much fun as I did when I played Halo 1/2 for hours and hours at a time.

This has already been discussed, I don't want to get into that crap again.

I'll just answer that and be done with the subject.

If i don't have some sort of power weapon, I can shoot him, but I most probably won't have the time to take his shields out. So it all boils down to melee timing. Whoever gets the 1st hit wins the encounter. And having that happen over and over and over again is really annoying
I've seen plenty of melee exchanges result in both players losing, similar to the system in H3. I don't see a problem with it, but that's me. I like this one better, because it draws things out more by establishing shields as a major deciding factor.

I think it just means you went up a rank. Since in Arena there are numbers instead of medals, the numbers shine

Git the beta tonight, loving it do far.

I'm a huge noob though. I forget what the gametype was called but you collect skulls. Well I had no idea that you had to go to the safe zone to get points. Lost 7 skulls at one point, and was pissed. :lol

also took me a few games to figure out how to use the class specific abilities.

dont make a shitty twilight joke

It's been answered a page or so back (EDIT: And horribly beaten), it's where it's been recently promoted up to a new rank. Same with Arena numbers.

Though, I did hear that it only happens if you play with someone, or if you're playing and you get promoted when playing during daytime.

I know you said no shitty Twilight jokes, so I did a horrible one :lol

Too tired to make a big write-up or anything like that, but Reach is just, too good.

Glad I got in on the early action from last week Thurs/Friday, because I've got the game down pact now... only thing I really need to learn is to tell when the other guy's shields are down - it was much easier to tell in Halo 3 than here, and when I mess up, then I have to try to get in a second melee...

Plenty of great matches I saved today, but this one was my favorite:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/GameStats.aspx?gameid=1880506&player=DXLR8R

27-4 in Team Slayer, 50-43 win, carrying my team when two of my friends were away for the first 3 or 4 minutes of the match - the Needle Rifle is just juicy man, and Armor Lock when I was in a pinch gave me a Running Riot - man I love that Armor Ability so much.

I don't even use the Assault Rifle anymore at all, I would if they beef it up a bit - I'm actually using THAT as a secondary to clean up if I have to reload my Pistol... :lol

I bloody love this beta, over 12 hours in now which is more than I've spent with some full priced games :D
Map count aside, the beta is more feature rich and polished than most full games. It's kind of nuts.

Played my first Arena game (with 3 randoms, two of who were in a Party Chat and the 4th wasn't talking) and got a freaking Perfection 16/0....but only got 1590 points :lol

I'm a pretty average player, in 3,222 games of Halo 3 I have ONE Perfection, so this was probably the most exciting game of Halo I'll have in a long time. I'm still super pumped, I'll probably buy some more render minutes so I can save the whole thing for posterity.

HALO FUCK YEAH

Then go play Grab Bag and spray each other to death all day sweet lord almighty. Arena is supposed to be hyper-competitive.

Yes, because using the AR can automatically be equated to a lack of skill and random spraying. [/sarcasm]

If players are successful with the AR, its because they are using it effectively, within its close-range niche or countering the mid-range advantage of the pistol with adept grenade use.

I really don't see the issue with putting DMR/AR starts into Slayer Pro. If AR is for noobs, then those who only use the DMR and swap the AR out at the first opportunity will wipe the floor with those that dont. If the weapon IS useful, then skillful players will learn how to use it most effectively within its niche.

Everybody wins?

Having such a shitty day. Can't seem to get any sort of streak going at all like I could yesterday :(.

This is all I want out of slayer pro. I love the abilities and don't like how they are taken out of pro but I understand why they are. What I don't understand is why completely remove the AR when other weapons are still on the map. Give me an AR/DMR start and I'll be perfectly fine with pro.

I just checked, and out of my 630 kills in Grab Bag and FFA, only 8 are with the AR :lol :lol

Playing the beta last night reminded me of why I don't play Halo multiplayer any more. Co-op should still be great though. I wish the beta had a private match mode so I could at least walk around and see the maps. =\

Armor lock isn't OP at all. Just back up and wait for the sucker to come out. Not really useful in Slayer. Essential in CTF though.

It is useful in Team Slayer, if you have a buddy follow you around the whole time. You go into armor lock and he lays waste to the kids waiting for you to come out of it. :D

havent been following the thread fully so i need to ask - have you done a 180 on the beta ghaleon?

My favourite thing about the armour ability? The fact that you if you stand over your dead opponent and spam the equipment button it looks like you're doing this sweet as electric teabag.

It feels really satisfying to me. Maybe you're just not a melee kind of guy.
I've used Sprint plus the Hammer or Sword in FFA games I've been playing lately; at times if I encounter a player and can run full sprint and melee, I will do it. Feels no worse than an AR+charge+melee=death combo in Halo 3.

The problem I find is the abundance of grenades. People will use them often as their primary weapon.

Why is my firefox being so bad with images? One more BA shot. I think I'm starting to get a lot better with the DMR. 3 more days until Invasion.

True. But using it to defend a position/flag/base/plot is great.

so assists count more than kills in the arena

i went +10, +11 countless games and got mid 1600s. ended a game with 13 kills and 14 assist got 1693 (had 1703 but died at the last sec)

exactly. even more so when its coupled with other players using invis or something else. against a solid team, armor lock is waaaaaaay dangerous

Nah, they're worth the same.

I've got to say the introduction of sprint has made this game way more enjoyable than Halo 3 for me. I just wish players were allowed to join mid-game. It sucks when some whiny bitch quits before the game starts because no one chose his favorite gametype.

Today:
Played two games of Arena. Did awful. Swore a lot. Considered playing Halo 3.
Then I played Grab Bag with a friend who just got the beta. So goood.
From now on, I'll warm up in Grab Bag before going to the Arena :lol

Unless you're standing next to the flag -- then the player on offense just sprints towards the flag, grabs it, and smashes your face as soon as you come out of armor lock.

Armor lock is similarly useless when your opponent is holding a plasma pistol.

Has yet to happen. Guess you're smarter than the average bear :lol

Ok so I played Arena tonight for almost three hours straight and noticed a couple glaring issues:

-Armor lock is completely overpowered and broken. I took three guys on with armor lock on Powerhouse and came out of the battle alive. It's broken because of how you are able to position the camera when using it so that once you pop out of it, you're free to double melée any enemy that is within range.
-During one game, one of the guys on the other team quit while my shield was regenerating. It switched host and my shield was stuck at about 50%. it didn't regenerate all the way.
-Powerhouse needs to have more long range weapons everywhere. It's so easy for one team with DMRs and Needies to hold down the base.
-The shotgun on Sword Base needs to go. It's too easy to take it, go up the ramp and just camp there.
-Grenades feel overpowered. The range is ridiculous. There were at least 5 time tonight that I just couldn't understand how I was hit from a grenade that landed so far away.
-DMR should be able to kill with 4 shots. Because of the melée system, it's ridiculous not to adjust the damage of the DMR, at least in Arena (or Slayer Pro) games when it's your primary weapon. Keeping it at 5 shots to kill encourages close range double meléeing too much.
-Why is it possible to shoot and kill your opponent and be shot and kille by your opponent at the same time?
-I wish reticule bloom would be less extreme or recovered a bit quicker than it currently does. I can't tell you how many kills I missed tonight because I squeezed off a premature shot trying to get someone before they rounded a corner. And the center of my reticule was dead on their heads too. Ugh I wish this could be slightly altered a bit.
-Jet packs are essentially useless. They're loud and make you a sitting duck. Sure they might be helpful in reaching higher up areas more quickly but the costs of using it greatly outweigh the benefits. Playing against jet pack users is like playing Duck Hunt.
-I really don't like the way that ammo is displayed. I don't know what it is but I just don't like that part of the UI.
-The matchmaking system was all over the place tonight. One match I would play kids who looked like they've never played an FPS before and the next I would be playing MLG try-hards. I was kid of hoping the games would be a little more balanced.

All in all I'm enjoying Arena a lot. And I'm pretty good at it too. I've got me a 1.59 k/d right now. :D

AL is indeed over powered. Bungie's already planning on nerfing it, so abuse it while you can. If you don't think its overpowered than you're either playing scrubs who aren't using it correctly or haven't figure out how to use it correctly yourselves.
