Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Wow. Just played Covy Slayer.

Why can't I WORT WORT WORT like I could Halo 3? Dodging grenades and then sticking a dude that is coming up the elevator shaft in Power House = soawesome.jpg

I miss playing an elite all the time. :(

Edit: Though the Elite's mandibles look kinda freaky. Out of place with the Halo 2/3 Elite models. :lol

How do you Wort Wort Wort in Halo 3?

So I'm playing headhunter last night and I'm way behind. I only have two skulls on the scoreboard and I'm carrying 1. Out of nowhere I melee a guy and now I have 10 skulls. I run toward the goal and hear "Skullamanjaro! Game Over!" I was like "What the?" The scoreboard said I had 25 skulls. The math just didn't add up. The other guys were cussing me in the post-game and I thought it was a glitch.

I had absolutely no idea that scoring with 10 skulls was an instant win. I'll have to change my tactics on that mode from now on.

I dislike that idea, it would give the people who die a lot and spawn an advantage, plus sometimes its not possible to get to your opponents dead body or they may have used theyre nades already, nades add a whole tactical range of options and I think they should be on the map. I think they just need to be toned down, they should behave more like Halo 3 nades which can kill a opponent which you have already weakened or which can be used to put an enemy to 1 shot.
I never thought it made much sense to have two grenade types, with different uses, but not include both at start. And while we talk about grenade spam being a problem, it's really frags and their attributes; plasmas are much easier to avoid and as such are not as much of a problem. One of each would limit the grenade spam issues considerably. And I'd say a solid 90% of the grenades I pick up are from dead players, not from placement on the map, so that's a marginal change at best. It would refine, not gut, the grenades available to players, as you suggest.

Is it me, or does a long assassination instantly transfer skulls to you as opposed to spraying them everywhere?

Don't judge grenades until you play with them against vehicles.

Grenades are fine the way they are anyway.

That said, looking at everybody else's stats makes me realize that I still don't have the hang of this game. I'm clearly playing too conservatively. And it doesn't help that my aim sucks in this game! I can't headshot for shit.
I'm also feeling the after effects of being weened off Cod's ridiculous auto-aim.

They need a taunt button that makes Spartans and Elites do things. I would seriously kill for a Wort Wort Wort button. :lol Maybe when you assassinate someone.

*snaps Neck*
"Wort wort wort!"

Yeah I was on the opposite side of that coin in the only Headhunter game I've played. I had 17 skulls and the closest guy had like 2. So I was feeling pretty good about myself, and then I hear "Skullamanjaro!"....

Grenades on the map are absolutely vital when you're up against a team that has an area locked down with power weapons. I'm not totally against starting with 1 of each grenade though, I love Plasma grenades so the more the merrier.

When I think about it, I'm not sure that the grenades are too strong. We're just getting hit by them more often. Maybe it's the maps and how you're fighting in tight spaces most of the time, especially Swordbase. Maybe there's some other new characteristic that I just can't put my finger on.

Percent of players that achieve a division rating, to be more specific.

Shishka! Give me an "Elite All the Damn Time" playlist in Matchmaking and I'd consider being day one on Reach.

Dodge ability. <3 Elites. <3 Both. <3 <3

Also playing Team SWAT makes the DMR slightly less useless than it is in normal slayer, but that's because it's a mid-range sniper-rifle in SWAT, so the slow fucking firing rate doesn't have a draw back in that mode. :lol

I agree that you should spawn with one of each nade but as you said you really dont pick up that many nades from dead players. Perhaps a middle ground where the amount of nades available on the map was toned down would work best?

More than controlling the number of nades available, I think they should just be balanced better, Nade spam in Halo 3 is much less of a problem
Except on Orbital :lol
, and im not too sure why nades where powered up quite so much.

I sort of agree, Sword Base makes it seem like more of a problem than it is but getting killed by a single nade will be infuriating on any map.

Gaf, lets play together. Not enough GAF parties on this Beta man. I have a couple hours free, who wants to play?

Due to being stood over the opponent, yeah you basicly grab the spray once he dies, I think it's a fair trade for using an assassination.

I broke down and bought ODST, new copy since they didn't have any used ones =\

Beta is pretty damn awesome and fun, hope it lasts a while.

Invasion tomorrow. Gotta work on my DMR usage tonight to get ready. I think I'm going to brave The Arena for a bit tonight. Last night's ~1200 performance wasn't so hot. gulp.

*salutes* Good luck soldier!

Do we have an ETA on Invasion tomorrow? Are we expecting a similar timing like the Beta start?

I think DMR will be key in Boneyard do to the maps size but I honestly have stopped using it in the Arena, especially on Sword Base. I just get that shotgun and combine it with either the pistol or snipe and it is amazing. People rush you when they think all you have is snipe and then you bust out the shotty. :D

No, they are indeed too strong, at least for the new movement speed and jump height. They need to do less damage, at least when they land far from you. A couple of tickles on my shield from an AR (not even getting it down to 85%), and a grenade like 10 feet away seems like an unfair way to die every time.

If the grenades and melee don't get adjusted because people just start putting up with them the way they are, I'm gonna be a sad panda come release.

I assassinated someone in mid-air on Sword Base. I love this game.

I think it might be the most awesome animation for an assassination. I do hope they have a wider variety for release but the air takedown is just awesome to see.

Comparing my reach card to my bungie.net stats it doesn't take arena into the count, so that makes the card rather useless to me :P since games like oddball just destroy stats.

Yep. It's a black star. (Onyx is black.) :D

Wow. That means I earned Onyx. Geez... These divisions are a little too easy to achieve imo :lol

I've done absolutely HORRIBLE in Reach compared to Halo 2 or 3. Like, I would get 2x the kills in Halo 2 or 3 that I do in Reach. Shit sucks.

This. I feel the boost in range of the grenades blast is because of the inclusion of Armor Lock in the game and I really don't think they are overpowered anymore for that reason and then when it hit me that it is a grenade we are talking about. You stand directly on it, you should die. :lol

I think that's the key. In previous Halo games, when a grenade is tossed at my feet I jump away from it, and avoid a fair chunk of the damage. That's not effective here, because of the heavier movement (taking longer to shift directions), slower speed, lower jump and greater grenade damage in the outer rim of the blast area. So while they may technically not be stronger - I suspect they're very close to Halo 3's overall - we're taking the full brunt of the damage much more often.

I think that this first ranking being only after 3 days is really how they are going to weed out divisions and make more defined rankings in them. Now you will only be matched up against other Onyx players in the Arena, either you will do good and stay Onyx or you will drop a division.

Edit: Wow almost 5 million games have played so far. :D

Has the percentages been published yet? Is Onyx the top 1, 2, 5%?

I don't think so. Onyx is the top 5% of division rated players.

Might happen, but not for the beta.

What those players don't realize is that it's better to go 19-18 than to go 9-3.

how so?

a 9-3 helps your team with nine kills and helps the opposing team with only 3. thats better then helping your team more but helping the enemies nearly as much, as in your 19-18 example.

i'm all for bungie stressing the importance of assists in their formula (though = to a kill may be a bit much), but deaths SHOULD be punished, and a higher K/D ratio should be important.

the majority of my games I have a fairly good ratio and would estimate i'm at around 1.4-1.6 overall. my weapon(s) of choice are dmr, pistol, nerfle, needler, shotty/sword/hammer. i dont camp (havent even touched the sniper rifle).

I meant solely in terms of Arena Ratings. A death hurts your rating, but only by a third as much as a kill or assist helps it. Getting more kills and assists is far more important than having a great spread, up to a point.

They did conceded that they might be underrating the significance of a death in the formula used for this Preseason, and I personally hope they kick it up for release.

So right now I'm in the top 5% of players who qualified for a division over the past three/four days? That's frankly staggering to me.
