Halo: Reach Beta Thread

TommyT said:
No no, I didn't mean it as it needs to be taken down after Reach comes out (as if it is meant to replace it), just if they had announced any plans for whatever-is-keeping-halo3-playable to keep it playable for those who want to play it.
99% of XBL Games with Online Features will continue to have XBOX Live available for as long as Microsoft sees fit. All XBOX Live Online Multiplayer and Online capabilities go through Microsoft's servers. Microsoft hosts all the servers, so the developers only have to update games playlists/etc through the game as long as they are holding the rights to that game.

IE: PGR 3 & 4 are XBOX360 Live Compatible, but Bizarre Creations (the devs behind them) no longer have control of the IP, Microsoft do (under Turn 10), so they can no longer issue out patches to teh game Turn 10 has control over patching PGR3 & 4.

Thus, Halo 3 should continue to see online play to be in working condition. Updates to playlists and etc are up to whoever Bungie tasks with that.

But all this is contrary to Sony who makes Server space and management something the developers themselves has to take care of. Correct me if I'm wrong pls, my memory might not be 100% on this.

I'm getting fed up with this game. I've never experienced so much bull shit in any other video game. I have yet to have any fun in a single game whether I go +15 or -8. It's just one exercise in frustration after another.

I wish I quoted this before the edit. :lol

Im loving it to be honest, but I find that to enjoy it I have to really stop caring about dieing, flying around in a jetpack is suicide, but meh its fun. Reach might not be as much fun as Halo 3 for me for the reasons Eazy said, but im still not finding it as frustrating as CoD. I have played many +30 games on that and hated every moment of them. :lol That being said I think that once the full game comes out I will be a lot more competative, I just dont have the time right now.

Yeah, stuff like the health system, clip size, and bloom make the game much more predictable. Gone are the days where you don't need a power weapon to get nice multikills and sprees going. Finish someone off and the combination of wacky spawns, spawning with the advantage of having nuke grenades, and non-regenerating health means someone'll clean you up pretty damn quickly.

Yeah, hit it on the head and throw double headshotting on the list.

Dont get my wrong, I love Reach and its clearly a really good game, the design decisions will please the majority, im just still finding that im not enjoying some aspects of it.

Unf, just had my first game over 1700, two of my team quit but we managed to scrape a 49-48 victory, hurrah. Loving the multiplayer, really really loving it. Love the grenades, the pistol, the DMR and needle rifle, the jetback, armour lock...it's great.

So average is between 20 and 30.

That's about what I figured.

If this is a comedy troll, then high-five!

If this is a serious post then

a) You fail at even infering math.
b) "For the vast majority of the time, the game seems to effortlessly maintain 30FPS"

No, the 'average' is about 29.5 or even higher. Also, the game has both AF and a form of AA.

You are not very good at being a PC graphics snob.

How anyone can complain about Reach's FPS is beyond me, I see absolutley nothing wrong with the way the game runs, especially when compared to some games. Then again, PC games haven't 'spoilt' me.

Some people, honestly.

Have you played Reach?
Do you know the first thing about how Frames Per Second work/feel?

If so and you still think Reach plays between 20 and 30 frames your an idiot. Im willing to bet your just a stupid troll though. :lol

Reach feels SO smooth, considering the amount of cool shit the engine does and the wide Fov I dont think anyone can complain about Reach from a visual standpoint.

I've played over 200 games of the beta, I really have tried to make it work but it just won't too one sided just no fun at all. Maybe it has clicked for you guys but it just frustrates me whenever I play it.

If you haven't played with a party or a team that actually focuses on teamwork, it makes a big difference. Playing with randoms in matchmaking is a gamble when it comes to competent teammates and ones that can hold their own against another party. Of course, you gotta learn the maps, weapons, and loadouts as well. If doesn't click by then, fuck it, it ain't for you :lol

Oh yeah, made these two days ago and just uploaded them:

This guy was going all crane-style on my teammate, but my Aerial Kung-Fu was greater.

Anyone wanna play later today? Probably be in more of a "fuck." mood than "FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU". :lol

/\

I can play anytime after 5pm PST.

LMAO, Arena just gave me an unintentional ego boost. I got placed in Onyx.:D

I'm so used to playing Halo with other gamers, Halo fans and DIEHARD Halo players, that I considered myself an average to decent Halo player. I was a 40 in a ton of playlists in Halo 3, but that doesnt mean much when you're surrounded by 50s.

This division placement, temporary as it may be, reminds me that while I may not be as good as my friends of TONS of the people in this thread, Im still better than 95% of the Halo playing population. :D

Apparently you can toggle the camo AA to last for about a minute without having to wait for it to recharge. Interesting outcome.

OOh interesting, wonder how they will fix that one? I dont think its too bad because the small flicker would give you away to anyone close enough, that second video was horrible though. :lol

Also, if Onyx is the top 5% of players it will be a VERY exclusive club. How much is gold, im guessing something like the top 10% after Onyx?

Eh. I'm OK with Reach's FPS but it's a night and day difference jumping from MW2 to say, Halo 3.

60 FPS vs 30 FPS in a huge difference. Responsiveness, smoothness, etc. etc.

oh and stats time! DMR FTW. Die melee noobs.

He was right, 1 headshot to kill! I think it takes about 5 to get rid of shields though?
Believe its four body shots, and one heatshot (which super combines).

Anyone else fancy a Covenant SWAT option too?
Needler Rifle would be the only Covenant weapon that stresses headshots, so it isn't a viable choice. Wouldn't mind Covenant-style CTF or something. Though I would like it better for Multi-CTF on a different (
better
) maps.

We need a Slayer Pro only playlist ASAP!

Slayer Pro is for people that can't play regular slayer and feel the need to cling to that last bit of MLG in them. Team slayer is perfectly balanced. Stop ruining Arena with your pro bullshit.

My head literally just exploded when I read this post. I am now speaking to you from the grave.

You know, it doesn't really matter how much damage the grenades deal compared to Halo 3, they're overpowered right now. It's really frustrating, especially when playing Arena. A couple of bullets from the AR, one frag, and I'm down. Ugh.

I swear. I was doing well in Reach, going positive most of the time, but over the past several days I've been going negative far more than positive.

That's the point. The grenades are there for players to even the score between close-range and long-range players.

I personally wouldn't mind if they weakened the grenades slightly.

I think at the exact epicenter of the blast, the damage should stay high. A well placed EXPLOSIVE should kill. But make the decrease in damage throughout the blast radius a MUCH steeper decline. So if you're five feet away from the blast, you live but lose a lot of shields.

How is one frag and a couple of bullets that different from Halo 3? Wasn't that the case there too? One frag and one shot from the BR to the head?

Ahh I see what you mean. If only they could have a Nerfle and Pistol combo. Evading headshot would be like playing in the Matrix. :lol

I think you will find that jetpacking-AR asshattery is the most skill intensive and competitive style of play known to man.
In light of this... I would apprecaite if the pros could have their own ARena playlist and the lesser players, their own too.

It happened there also, but less so than two AR's charging another timing their inevitable beatdown.

At this point, the reduction in agility and mobility is my biggest gripe with the game. This applies to both movement speed and jumping ability. I am no longer able to out-maneuver my opponent, or get myself out of bad situations by relying on skill alone. In fact, I’m generally forced to use whatever armor ability I currently have selected, and hope that it’s the right one for that given situation. Coupled with the increased grenade damage, reticule bloom, small clip size, and the ability of enemies to very quickly close the gap on me (by using sprint) I feel extremely gimped. As others have pointed out, I can often times successfully dispatch one enemy, only to be left without shields and wounded, in mid-reload, and out of grenades: an easy clean-up job for any teammate of the other team to come and finish off. I’m unable to get by anymore on my ability to out-maneuver an enemy who is at an advantage (whether that advantage is more health, better weapon, etc) because there is almost no ability to maneuver at all! This is a MAJOR change from every previous Halo game. Maneuverability was such a big part of the game, and now it’s virtually gone.

Rushing at players with the sprint ability while wielding the hammer (which, by the way, has an insanely overpowered amount of lunge tacked onto it) or sword/shotgun has become a viable strategy mainly because the ability for the other player to respond and get out of the way has been virtually eliminated. Back peddling while firing at the rusher doesn’t help, either, because the bloom makes the amount of time required to down him significantly longer than the amount of time he needs to close the gap on my movement-impaired ass.

Also, the DMR needs to be 4-shot; rarely are you able to finish someone off before they’ve been able to get away (sprint?) due to the length of time required to wait between shots (bloom).

The grenades are overpowered (although if the movement speed and jumping characteristics are increased so that you can actually avoid a grenade that’s been thrown at you, then they might be okay as is).

The clip size of the DMR and pistol need to be increased, so you’re not left defenseless after killing one guy. Bungie has basically given you a clip that’s just big enough for one encounter – god forbid you run into more than one enemy at a time (in which case, apparently, you’re screwed).

The plasma launcher is overpowered and needs to be fixed. I mean, come on.

The needler is too powerful, mainly because of the inability to maneuver out of the way. If you’re caught out in an even remotely open space, and someone catches you with a needler? You’re fucked. And no, armor lock isn’t always a viable option. I shouldn’t have to rely on armor lock to save me.

Speaking of armor abilities - they last too long. You can sprint virtually across the map in one go, camo lasts for what seems like 30 seconds or more, and I was actually able to go to the fridge to get another beer while waiting for an enemy to get out of armor lock.

I feel that the game would be so much better if these main issues were addressed. Do I have other complaints? Probably. But these are the big ones. I love the new lobby system, and I love the new game types. There’s a lot to like about Reach. But it just feels like they’ve taken a lot of the satisfaction (skill?) out of the game with some of these changes. I want to love this game like I loved the other Halo games (all of which have been day 1 purchases).

I’ve been a Bungie fan since Myth. I’m probably as big of a Bungie fanboy as you can get – and this is the first time I’ve felt like I’m on the fence for one of their games in the last 15 years.

That said, I'll continue playing the beta for the next 2 weeks... and cross my fingers.
