Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Oh yeah, the Needler sucks now. I put a shit ton of needles into some people and they don't super combine. Feels so random now when it does happen.

I disagree. I think the needler is a beast. im destroying everything with it.

The only thing that I have seen really wrong with "Guard" and Armor Lock in general is I will use it times to save my ass but the enemy will go behind me to melee me when I come back, well if I hold the movement stick in their direction and rotate the camera to face them I will pop out of the lock and melee them first. It is weird and even when I do it, it doesn't feel fair. :lol

That to me is a sure sign that whoever is trying to get you once you break your lock is an idiot.

"Oh hey when he comes out I can just assassinate him, there's no way he'll notice me standing here behind him considering he just went into armor lock because I was shooting at him!"

Not a lot of good things to say about the Beta from me...

  • Grenades (both plasma and frag) might as well be nukes - their range and damage is absolutely overpowered
  • Playing as and playing against Elites suck
  • Needle Rifle is underpowered - I have no idea when it should supercombine.
  • Plasma Repeater is not good
  • Blooming reticules have no place in a Halo game.
  • Pistol needs more rounds in its clip - don't believe the previews, it is NOT the Halo 1 pistol.
  • The melee system is still all kinds of f'ed up - you'll literally finish your sword lunge animation, and SEE your enemy use his melee attack well afterwards AND then he dies, leaving you with no shield and vulnerable
  • Sword base is terrible. Boarding Action 2.0
  • Rolling + Brute Hammer with an Elite is easily abused
  • DMR fires WAY too slow for such a fast-paced game as this

Granted this is a beta, and Bungie may address some of these issues. It should also be noted that I absolutely HATED Halo 3's multiplayer and I believe Halo 2 is still one of the best console multiplayer shooters ever. So take my gripes as you will

Needle rifle is better than the DMR I think, if for some reason you cant hit the head after shields go down all you have to do with the needler is at least hit them three times. I don't know if that's also a kill with the DMR but it's a for sure with the NR.

No trust me it is a little weirder than that, like my Spartan spins, it looks unnatural. :lol

Also does anyone else LOVE Covie Slayer but totally suck at it??? :lol I am horrible at it, can't kill Elites at all...makes me worry for Invasion.

I think a lot of peoples problems with the DMR would be fixed if they made it 4 shot.

I also have no problem with the melee system.( i win almost every melee match)

i have no idea how sword base flows... even after playing it like 10 times. and objective games on it? forget about it! i grab flags and have no idea how to take them where they need to go! :lol

the map is a lot like boarding action, and i'll admit, i never could wrap my head around that one either!

first impressions after several hours, its awesome. IMO it feels like a bigger change in gameplay and gameplay mechanics than any of the previous sequels. certainly takes getting used to.

couple of random +'s / -'s:

+dmr is super bad ass
-needle rifle isnt quite as good as i was hoping. its definitely a poor mans dmr
+AA seem well balanced. there certainly seems to be a play style for each, but...
-... armor lock DOES seem a bit over powered. not as a lone wolf player, but if you pair up with someone else and either one of you have it, you can wreck shop. send guy in with armor lock. weaken the enemy and engage ability, have wingman come in and clean up while you are invincible.
+melee with the new shield mechanics works VERY well. a big improvement for sure.
+lots of bungie folks on. i assume they are bungie with the "bungie" name after their gamertag? i recognized stosh (stoshy?)
+the maps are gorgeous. waaaay more detailed then halo 3 and even better lighting.
+snapping a guys neck as he is feet away from scoring a flag in ctf
-playing for several hours and not once getting to play covie slayer. those of you saying it sucks, why?

wat. Evade is so fun to use in firefights.

when your opponent has no shields.

Far out. Reading impressions is making me want this beta now. I had thought I could easily wait the few days. Turns out Monday is a public holiday here as well (I don't keep up with these things), so if Bungie could move the beta up to the 2nd, that would be great.

Anyhow, the impressions don't seem as positive as I thought they might be. That may change over time though.

They are on the walls, like in ODST.
What do they look like? I've actually ran around looking for them - something white with a red cross on it, ala ODST is what I'm expecting.

ive been searching but cant find it...whats the gt we need to add for the neogaf beta active roster 2 thing?
Top of the OP.

That's even more upsetting...then its hilariously underpowered unless you score the headshot (which I understand should always be your goal) but wow.

Also, asking me to hold RB to pick up health? WHY.

Yeah, they look the same as always. They're just really sparse. They're usually on a wall next to a door or hallway.

They are more greyish than white in Reach.:lol They really are hard to notice and you have to press X to use it, I don't like that at all.

GhaleonEB said:
I don't even know what they look like. I can't recall seeing a single one anywhere.
I saw them alot on Powerhouse.
Because I stood in the top area mostly.
But there's also one in that small room of the outter area of the map. They're not that hard to find if you look well enough. They blend in with the map a bit though.

In Powerhouse, there's one where the Brute Hammer spawns.

Also, when you play Stockpile and you start on the bottom of the map, there's one in the small house to the left your cap point, where it would lead you to the Focus Rifle.

why is the hud so awful? surely someone durning playtesting said to themselves "hey this doesn't look right, the text is too small and sometimes my reticule is hard as shit to see!".

plus medals are all greyed out. they should pop with color in order to make them easily recognizable.

Wow. This game is getting ridiculous love over at MLG forums. :lol

Which is contrasted by a fair amount of dislike over here on the casual forums.

I played Halo 1 to death so Reach should be really good for me.

I love it. Far more enjoyable than Halo 3 beta.

While we only have two standard medium-small size maps, I think Swordbase it best played under standard Slayer rules and in 3 Plots. If you got a good team, 3 Plots ends quickly. Enjoying that gametype much more than Stockpile. Powerhouse is also fun under certain rules, but I do not enjoy for Stockpile, for example. Just... eh. 1-CTF is OK for it. Reminds me a lot of 1-CTF at High Ground.

What happened to One Bomb? Will that be removed from Halo MP or is it just not a finished product yet?

reach is definitely the biggest change in the formula, gameplay wise, for the franchise. i mean honest to goodness changes to how it works and how matches flow. the movement speed, reduced jump height, increased fov, reticule bloom, new shield system, and armor abilities will take quite a bit of time for some to adjust and get used to.

personally, i think its taking giant steps in the right direction.

oh, and swat is actually good now!

Stockpile has been pretty good for me but I am missing this "push and pull" gameplay that Bungie talked so highly of, seeing a lot of blowouts in it and the close games that come it doesn't have much of inching flags closer just more of no one is a disrupter and taking flags out of the enemy stockpile.

I have no problems with jumping, I think it's fine. My only problem is with some of the weapon damage. Does anyone else find that the focus rifle sucks?

HOLY SHIT. THANK YOU FRANKIE!!!!

Pistol, is like fucking orgasmic <3 <3 <3

I've only played like 4 games but OMG

Oh, yeah. Grenades are way too powerful.

I love the fact you can cancel a sword melee. Fucking genius.

Clawing and pistoling while in the air with Jetpack = amazing.

My faith is semi-restored in Bungie. I just hope the other maps are good.

i just won a game where we were behind and with about 5 seconds left for the last flags to score i tossed out 3 from the enemies capture point! they were honestly shocked and outraged that they lost! :lol

:lol Amazing! I could have used you on my team for some matches earlier.

Let my roommate try out the beta and he discovered a great way to screw with how instinctive melee is for some people. He'd pick armor lock, and when near someone, he'd run right at them like he was trying to melee them, but then armor lock instead. Other person would punch and hit the lock, get EMP'd, and then my roommate would come out of armor lock and kill them off real easy. It worked like every damn time. :lol

+1! I love people running up to me trying to hit me, or waiting from behind thinking they will assassinate me. As people learn though, they will just back away as soon as they see you Lock then it gets more interesting.

I seriously suck at this game. :lol

Monday will be nice when we see a larger assortment of people with inferior skill such as I.

Majority of the games I played, I lost, but came in second place.
inb4 lol every team that loses comes in second. I was mostly playing FFA.

But anyway, I'm sure you'll catch on, took me a while to get used to the controls.
