Halo: Reach Beta Thread

help me GAF, I'm a grenade spammer. I dont mean to do it, I'm trying to quit, but when a guy is closing in and he shot first or I feel like I'm going to die I cant help myself. how do I wean myself off this despicable habit?
The first step is admitting that you don't have a problem and realizing that Grenades are a viable tactic in the arsenal of every experienced Halo player throughout gunfights.

Also...

I love the game, but there's there's still lots of work to do in the polish side, specially on the HUD and menu UI. I hope Bungie is listening to all the small complaints. The text is too small and not clear enough sometimes, noise filter doesn't help in the menus.

And those jaggies, wtf Bungie, all the hard work improving the visuals for it all to seem meaningless because the jaggies still make it look similar to halo 3.

Armour Lock and Invis need nerfing, they're getting abused already.

Still, I'm having blast.

It's funny how some people think armor lock and invis is useless and then some think it gets abused. I love armor lock. Not so much with invis because it seems I can be spotted from across the map when I have it on.

Armor lock is really just about knowing when to use it. If you use it in dumb situations then it isn't going to be effective.

Also why is there no option for DMR starts? This is a major problem for gametypes like 1 Flag on Powerhouse when the team on offense keeps getting spawned with only an AR and a pistol and the defense team can pick up a ton of power weapons off the spawn. It's really difficult to win a cross map battle against a DMR or needle rifle when all you have is a pistol.
Yeah, I didn't like this much. I found the pistol useful, and I could beat a DMR or Nerfle at mid-range, but past that I was done for. I never found Slayer Pro, either. Really wanted that to show up.

Grenade damage seems wildly inconsistent. Ive tossed grenades 4 feet behind fully shielded opponents and killed them in one hit, and Ive tossed grenades right at the feet of people on the verge of death, and nada.

Likewise, on my end too. There have been so many times where Ive caught myself asking 'how the hell did I survive that?!' when it comes to grenades.

Fix it.

Hurr Hurr AR is superior.

Played a ton today. I love it. I had a buddy down checking it out with me and he described it perfectly. He said "It feels like a sequel to the original Halo, but fresh." Here's a few things random thoughts.

- It really feels like the most balanced Halo game yet.
- Sword Base feels like a classic Halo: CE map. Almost like a more advanced Boarding Action.
- Stockpile is my favorite CTF variant Bungie has ever made.
- The DMR is fucking awesome. It rewards you for using it the right way in the right situation and it's much more balanced than the BR.
- Because of the DMR, SWAT is much more fun. It's not based on who shoots first anymore, it's on who controls their DMR best.
- Playing as an Elite and a Spartan really are different. I played Covy Slayer twice and sucked hardcore. I'm just not that fond of the Covenant weapons personally but others surely are because they were destroying me:lol Or maybe I just had opponents better than me when I played it. I love the Focus Rifle though.
- The small changes make a huge difference. Health packs, fall damage, the weapon changes...Speaking of which, because of all the small changes, grenades are a major part of the gameplay again. They seem much more dangerous than they were in Halo 3.
- I've been using Sprint almost exclusively. It fits my play style. It's great for CTF games to either get in to take the flag quick, or to catch up to the flag carrier when you're on offense or defense to either defend your teammate or kill the enemy team's flag carrier. Also great for getting to your weapon of choice early in games. And for closing gaps between your enemies quickly.
- Armor Lock seems a bit overpowered. Players sometimes seem to be invulnerable for a second or two even after they come out of it. I do enjoy it when a teammate does it though and I get to come in and clean up the guys he was fighting. Teammates using it are a great distraction to your enemies.
- Jetpack is cool I could see myself using it here or there.
- I haven't used Invis, but my buddy used it and he did some cool stuff with it. Created some cool tactical advantages. Does using it scramble your radar too? I seemed to notice that. Kind of strange.
- I noticed the subtle touch from Shadowrun where your HUD indicates where you are on the map so you can call out "I'm at SO-SO, need help carrying the flag" or something like that. It helps.

Overall I'm really pleased and I can't wait to try the other maps and modes when they open up. REACH BABY!

Here are some early impressions.

1) Both maps are terrible. Sword Base is a convoluted mess. Not only is it hideous, there are too many worthless areas that exist purely for aesthetic reasons. If you don't spawn with the jetpack during an objective game you are effectively gimped. Any map that feels like it exists solely to promote a new game feature rather than balanced gameplay is going to fall flat. The players can see right through your design. At the very least make it nice to look at. I feel like I'm playing Halo in the Anteroom from House of Leaves. ~~ Powerhouse aka High Ground v2 is a mess. The indoor areas are impossible to play in due to the nade spam. The outdoor areas have zero flow to them.

2) Nades are incredibly unbalanced. Reduce damage by 30-40%.

3) The player isn't rewarded for using skill based weapons. You'll get far more kills spraying the AR and spamming nades than using the pistol or DMR.

4) DMR, Pistol too weak. Reduce both to 4-shot kills, increase pistol clip by 5. Reduction of auto-aim makes 4-shot weapons balanced compared to an easy weapon like the AR.

5) Increase shooting feedback. Shooting reticule needs to be vivid and shield damage needs to be easily visible. I could tell when I broke someone's shields in H3, and I could tell when my teammate was hurt and had to help him out. I can't see either in Reach, which leads me to my next point

6) Don't tweak things for 'realism'. Don't decrease the visibility of shield damage because that's how it was in some Halo book. People are floating around in jetpacks shooting neon blue plasma guns. Too often Bungie makes things that sacrifice playability for pretty design (see: half the Halo 3 maps)

7) New HUD is clunky. The callout system is completely ridiculous. This is something that was obviously conceived in a meeting and is worthless in practice. People either create their own callouts or adopt ones widely used. Anyone who plays at a level too casual to care about callouts is not going to care about the text on their HUD.

8) Melee system is terrible. Lunge is still ridiculous enough that double melee is more effective than melee, jumping back and trying to headshot. This new system fixes none of the problems the old one had.

9) New weapons seem pointless. Grenade launcher... what? What is this for? You have a rocket launcher and a gun that shoots lock-on sticky grenades. Now we need a frag grenade shooter? Right now I have my own grenade launcher, it's called my arm + frags. Lightning gun can't juggle enemies in the air which is lame as hell.

10) Why is there no immediate visual indicator in the matchmaking lobby to see whether the other team is in a party or not? Strange omission.

-the health system doesn't really make logical sense to me. Why can't I kill someone with no shields with a single headshot anymore?

A single headshot still kills with shields down, no matter what. You're either missing the head, or there are connection issues.

I really haven't had any problems with the grenades, which is odd because I do often get annoyed by 'nade spam in H3.

Melee lunges do seem inconsistent, but no more so than in H3.

My gut reaction to the pistol was that it was too weak, but I've since learned that I need to be patient with it and not jam on the trigger. Slow and deliberate is the way to go.

Single shot. You can simulate bursts by spamming the trigger like Eazy, but don't expect to hit anything that way.
If you get 6 shots on a guy while waiting for your reticule to close each time he's either AFK or Ghaleon.

# Total Time Played: 00d 03h 28m:lol :D Finally thank you Bungle!
It's so much better playing with Gaffers than Scrundoms! Hope to do it for the next 20 days.

I'm loving the game, but it's a lot different. I wish I was a better player than I am though, I got slaughtered in one covies game! Hopefully in 500 games or so I'll be good! Shame the beta didn't have customs, Bungle should put it in the last day or something that would be awesome!

got an email today from expertzone saying they had a beta code for me. I didn't even buy odst or have any intention of playing, but i downloaded it. Wasn't impressed at first but the game has grown on me.

Funny thing is as soon as I started playing everyone on my friends list sent me messages asking how I got into the beta early :lol

Super Street Fighter IV comes out, and I'm playing it to death, and when I come back to GAF, everyone has beta keys :'(

The DMR is a mid-long range weapon. It's glory will come in Network Test 1 and Invasion.

Is it a glitch or on purpose that you can only veto as a whole in splitscreen?

For example my guest wanted to play Oddball on Swordbase and I wanted to play Headhunter on Powerhouse, we can only vote for one. If I vote for Swordbase,my guest can vote for oddball and it will switch both our votes.

Oh hey, this game has fall damage :lol

And, Reach doesn't feel like a Halo game. Not hating on it or anything, I really like it actually, but...i'm just not getting the 'Halo' vibe from it. And this is obviously highly subjective, but the whole thing feels...experimental, for a lack of a better word. Like it should be coming out Sept. 2011 instead of Sept. 2010.

Also, I have no idea why I feel this way nor can I add any objectivity to this, but the game gives off a sense of fatigue, like there's no heart put into it or something. They're tired of making Halo.

Okay guys. See you on the other side.

I'm out of this thread until May 3rd hits or I get a F&F code. Whichever comes first.

you step away from this thread for a bit and come back to an asplosion.

Time for them to make "Halo on steroids" with Activision, influenced by Avatar.

"Marrying their creative minds and incredible talent to the power of PS3 will be like giving PS3 fans Halo on steroids."

Well, more like sick of working with Microsoft and not necessarily Halo.

That filter and motion blur aren't masking it very well indoors, the more light sources the worse it looks without AA.

Really like what I'm playing, loving the objective game types so far. New weapons are awesome, but damn, could the sword be any uglier!

Loving the beta so far, except for the motion blur. And I wish we didn't have to stand directly on the flag to recover it. They should make a small circle around it cause I swear you can't even move when recovering. Oh yeah, and I don't like that Health system. Actually like playing as an elite more than a spartan.

EDIT: Focus rifle kick ass, unless the enemy has it.

-Callouts are dumb
-I like the new melee system
-I wish there was more feedback on your opponents when you shot them

Other than that I love everything about it. The needler is a beast.

When will arena be up?

What is sad is not that I really wanted to get into the beta early and didn't, it's that I've got nothing better to do than lurk on on neogaf whilst 75% of gaf is playing right now. May go to bed early tonight. I can't wait for this day to be over.

where the fuck is it! 30 games still don't know wer it's at! :/

Not of much help here, but somewhere near the back of the structure of buildings, near the highest base (elevation wise). Hopefully someone can come and point out a more specific location, but if not this can point you in the right direction.

But, it is rather useless.

Wow first game of 'Covie Slayer'. I always played as an Elite in H3 and Im seriously hoping I'll have the option to continue this pattern in the final release. Not simply for aesthetic reasons anymore, but because I don't think I'll be able to live without dodge/roll. Its just so good.

C'mon Bungie release is still a ways off, Elites always need more love! :lol

In before 'lol balance issues' and talk about headshots and hitbox nonsense.

Only played about 5 different matches (All on Sword Base. Good thing I don't mind it.)

I'm definitely enjoying it more than Halo 3 Multi, which I've only played sporadically since it launched. A few things, which are probably repeats of others (Keep in mind, I'm a -terrible- Halo player, so yeah.)

Invis: Either I'm missing something, or Invis is completely broken. Everytime I've tried it, I'm automatically spotted. On the flip side, I'll run into a guy on the other team who has it and he looks like he's a ghost. All see through, but not really hard to see at all.

Armor Lock: Its awesome. I love it, its a perfect "OH CRAP" button for anything coming at you from a decent distance. Activate close to enemies tho, and hope you've got backup coming.

Sword Base: I really like it, it really makes me think of the opening area on Halo 2, the space station. It was a nice jolt of nostalgia.

Assassination Animation: I don't know if its my controller, or the timing window is too short but I've accidentally gone into it when I just wanted to smash someone in the back of the head real quick.

Evade looks like its going to be ripe with abuse via Hammer / Sword. Then again, I'm probably wrong.

Really enjoying the feel of the gameplay so far, to me its like Halo but a bit different. I like it.

Now, slightly offtopic: In the Legendary Edition of Reach, does anyone know what the Noble Team statue is supposed to be made out of?

Wow, really had a good night.

I am too tired to continue.. and to post my detailed opinion, but if I had to put it in a nutshell, I would say that at first it doesn't taste really like a Halo game but it tastes good, and after it still taste good but it starts to taste like a Halo. Pretty strange :lol

Ah yeah, Bungie should maybe take a look into the double melee, it's faster to give another melee than shooting right after.

And when two choice are tied, it should be chosen randomly IMO.
Because the options are almost always at the same position (CTF is always in the first option, Team Oddball in the second, SWAT or Covy Slayer in third etc.)

PS : Covy slayer rocks :D

People abused Microsoft Expertzone (which is out of codes)
Plenty of people got legitimate codes. We didn't all cheat the system. :P

I've really only expressed how I love the game
on GAF so far, but I do agree with kylej and others that there are problems. I think putting the DMR down to 4-shot kills would be perfect. I think the pistol should have more shots (but not be stronger). I agree that grenades are weird, they seem to do really variable damage. And the melee lunge should probably be adjusted so a person is rewarded for punching to pop the shields, then backing up
for a headshot. But I expected problems like these. I'm sure the vehement complaints on this forum and others will lead Bungie to adjust the game. That is the point of the beta. So I'm not worried about small or medium inconveniences or errors at this point. Nothing MAJOR is wrong, to me, so I'm satisfied with my FREE TEST COPY. I'm sure we'll all be missing Reach when the beta is over.

Anyway, I don't think I saw this answered: where is a grenade launcher? Apparently I was killed by one, and I see others have kills with it. Is it on Powerhouse somewhere? EDIT: always refresh before posting. Got it.

In all honesty, you're not missing out on much. I haven't run across people that give a good challenge without there being some issue like a person dropping out.

Network has been great so far.
There are some definite glitches with the new gametype/veto system. Lots of swapping right at 0 creates some really fucked up gametypes. Had a territories game where we couldn't capture territories, choose loadouts, or "win" in general. Was all messed up.

But it is fun, sort of. It's standard halo shooting waiting for something interesting (mostly abusing armor lock[which needs a reactivation delay of like, .2 seconds]).

This is coming from a casual Halo player: I lover Reach! It's the best Halo, by far. In Halo 3, I felt like I was moving under water. I had the sensitivity to max and still felt stuck in molasses or something. The aiming and controls are night and day with Reach. I'm only at sensitivity level 7 and it feels perfect. Really tight. The abilities are also awesome. A+ so far!

I don't really think it's weak, I watched my cousin play his first game, and he destroyed with it.(But his reallllllyyy good at Halo) I would like if it shot faster though, 5shot/kill is good
