Halo: Reach Beta Thread

The game is tricky to get used to definitely. I was a Brig in Halo 3 so I was not a bad player at all but Reach definitely is different.

Its almost "easy to learn/hard to master".

The main thing I don't like is the FRIGGLE FRAGGLING NADE SPAMMILIN!

I've been a Halo fan since CE, but I'm finding Reach absurdly boring so far.

It could be a few reasons:

1) the playlist is crap. Slayer almost never comes up, and when it does, I get thrown into a match of Stockpile (which btw, I have no interest in playing).

2) Weapons lack the punch I expected. Maybe it's watching and playing MW2, but the guns lack the oomph that I've come to expect.

3) Swordbase is fucking boring, and the playlist keeps picking it for 1 flag CTF.

Why is there no Slayer playlist? Arena is "unavailable", so I can't even play Slayer there. Why is setting up a Slayer match like pulling teeth?

Pluses:

1) Melees feel more potent this time. They might actually not be, but I see a difference.

2) The sword is just as awesome as ever.

3) Grenades send me into giggle fits.

(I haven't played a LOT of games yet, so I'm hoping things change)

I suck way bad at this game. It's still fun as hell, but there's already pro dongers, and they get super annoying!

I can't seem to get the DMR right. I can never kill anyone like I could with the BR in Halo 2 and 3. I'm sure it'll take some time getting used to.

By the way, HEADHUNTER is so good. I got a Skullamanjaro on the 2nd match I played. It's probably the funnest gametype I've ever played in a Halo game so far.

Wow. This game is getting ridiculous love over at MLG forums. :lol

Which is contrasted by a fair amount of dislike over here on the casual forums.
Pretty obvious why. Shark Tank or whateverthefuck is downright oppressing with how much it panders to that audience. The ludicrous requirements to get anything out of the DMR/Pistol also tilts violently in that direction. Someone definitely put on their "Wez wanna be srs bsnss" pants.

More fun complaints:

The spawning is downright terrible, and the way people are using jetpacks I'm not sure if it can even be fixed.

You remember a few days ago? When people saw the beamlaserriflecannondeathray thing? And there was some back and forth about how it seemed so noobish, but maybe there were countermeasures or something? Yea, no. Thing is broken beyond belief. "Ohhh look, it overheats so quicklyy//theaim is wild//you have plent of time to escape" Wrong. Never forget that journalists are terrible at videogames.

But whatever. Sprint is amazing, nothing else matters.

The DMR feels worlds better than the BR. Maybe I'm just too dumb to kill shit with the BR, but it feels so much more actually useful to me.

Gotta pile on on the Sword Base hate, though. This map isn't very fun and basically requires jetpacks.

This motion blur's gonna give me a headache, too.

I had fun playing tonight, but I was getting worked for the most part. Need to work on my skills. It'll be nice to get some more playlists, too.

One comment about gametypes - Stockpile on Powerhouse seems very skewed towards the red team that starts uphill. Much easier paths back to the base and the flags seem to spawn closer. Don't think I lost as red and don't think I won as blue tonight. Might need some tweaking.

I've played over 2000 matchmade games of Halo 2, over 2000 matchmade games of Halo 3, played through the campaign of all three games multiple times, still enjoy playing local games of Halo 1, and would consider the Halo series my favorite multiplayer franchise. I don't know what Halo Reach is, but it damn sure isn't the Halo I've loved for nearly nine years. I'm not saying the game is bad, it just isn't Halo.

I love Stockpile so much. Everyone can do their own thing all over the map but the activity coalesces into the two capture points, either as a spoiler or defense. There isn't as much a degree of failure if you don't capture a flag because it was tossed out of your circle... it's probably not too far away and you can pick the point up next scoring round. So even if you collect all 4 flags and some jerk comes and tosses them all out, you don't lose all the work of gathering them.

I think I finally get how these commendations work. Getting the medals fills up the bar for each type of commendation... when it shows up on the bottom of your screen you increased a rank in that category. I don't believe they show up in split screen.

I just wish there were some bloomin' NUMBERS on the summary screen for that on Bnet so I had any idea what I'm doing.

I find that amusing, because every time I've played Stockpile, the blue team wins. Also, Stockpile is the WORST mode to go into with randoms. Why the fuck are these idiots voting on an objective mode if they're never going to actually attempt to capture any damn flags? It's frustrating seeing myself listed as having the most captures, because I suck at the game.

As long as they are killing people or taking flags out of the opponent's capture zone, I don't mind doing the heavy lifting.

i find this wayyyyy harder than halo 3 for some reason. I dont feel like any one weapon is good enough to kill someone.

headhunter makes me want to punch a hole in my screen

Haha, maybe it was just a weird trend for me tonight.

Yeah, objective games suck with randoms for the most part, though it's a nice surprise running into people that want to communicate and work as a team.

A few games I've been in, I feel like if I started yelling about the flags, my teammates would likely only answer with "there are flags in this mode?"

Last game I was in, the opponents pretty much had three flag captures completely uncontested the entire game. The only reason my team had any captures and they didn't get constant four caps, is because I died over and over again to protect a single damn flag in our own capture zone.

No way. The walls surrounding the red circle turn it into a fucking black hole for nade spam. Blues can jetpack right from their spawn and hit it within seconds and everything fucking explodes.

You can voice your opinion that' its bad. Like me. I personally feel the Reach Beta sucks and is not fun and like you, this does not feel like Halo. I also thought Halo 3's multiplayer was god awful.

And I'm a goddamn Halo super fan, 2 copies of each Halo game (even ODST) with the special edition of each game being the second copy (H2 and H3 Limited and Legendary editions remain unopened) I own all the books, multiple figures, the graphic novel, Halo: uprising, the ArtFX Masterchief statue, unopened 12 pack of Halo 3 mountain dew and some other shit I've forgotten about.

Man, I don't get the Sword Base hate. Mostly cause that map has a Plasma Launcher and FUCK I love that gun. Managed to get a PERFECTION in a Stockpile match today by whoring the Plasma Launcher (and shotgun) :P

Loads of fun so far, though the two maps are already getting stale. It's a beta though, so what can you do
except wait for invasion to open up

I must be using this pistol wrong or something. I can hardly even tell when I've shot someone with it, too.

Played for a good amount of time. Enjoying it thus far.
  • Weapons are great, from DMR to Needle Rifle - all of them are enjoyable to use and seem balanced. The grenade launcher is definitely hard to control but that's just the nature of the weapon. I actually got a kill with the plasma pistol, too. I tend to see myself spawning and automatically switching to the pistol - it's much better than the weak AR.
  • The armor abilities are cool. Jetpack, sprint, and camo provide good tactical advantages that add variation and fun to the gameplay. Armor lock is retarded. Some people say it's overpowered, others say it's not. I just think it's retarded. It slows down the game, and it just doesn't add anything fun. I think they should get rid of it altogether. Oh, and by far the best ability is roll. It's so fucking fun.
  • Maps are enjoyable. I liked both.
  • Stockpile is a great new gametype. Feels great. SWAT is fun but it feels like whoever sees who first wins (which is not very fun gameplay for me personally)

Yeah, easy to forget that because it's a beta you're not supposed to get super addicted just yet. 2 maps gets awful old when you play waaaay too much on the first day like I did :(

Why do you say that?

I like the map a lot, and I love using sprint on it. It's just that 1flag on it is the worst fucking thing ever for newcomers. Completely and totally overdesigned and an utter nightmare to navigate. The unintelligible HUD symbols don't help none.

Just had a good game of Team Slayer. Good lord the hammer + run is overpowered. :lol

Maybe it's because of my eternal scrubness but this feels completely like a Halo game to me, only plus.

I absolutely love it.

This is not meant to be a sleight against you in any way Benjamin, but you seem to absolutely love every game you post about. :P

Over 50 pages in 24 hours? Geez, and I had prided my self in reading every page since the halo3 beta thread but if I tried to read all that I'd be getting to bed just in time to get up for work.

And I didn't get a FF code to soothe my pain either :-(

Just picked up my first sniper spree on sword base. I can't wait for team snipes!

I don't get the hate. This game still feels like halo to me.

So true.

Why waste time posting in threads for games I hate?

But yeah, it's that new game smell, I guess, right? I mean, if I hated a game I certainly wouldn't have fun playing it, but Reach is really a blast. The new Armor powers are wicked, the new game types have changed shit up and, man, I'm a sucker for XP type shenanigans. I'm not good enough where I'd really notice "Oh, they totes nerfed this" or "Dang, this thing is way overpowered now." I'm usually just running for my life with the flag or being all "WHEEE, I AM TOTALLY FLYING" before I get microwaved by laser stream.

AM I NOT ALLOWED TO BE ENTHUSED BY THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME, THETRIN?

;D

Yep. Feels slightly different in some aspects, but it's definitely halo, and good halo at that.

I guess I'm easy to please. Hell, I'm just happy to play a halo game that finally looks like next gen visuals. The only complaints I have so far:

Sprint and the hammer together can be a pain in the ass.

I like the layout of the sword base but that is one damn dull looking map.

Got 10 games in tonight. Lots of fun. Definitely had horrible K/D when I started but I'm staying in the positive spread now.

Some funny moments too. Like the serious business guy who said we were using location callouts (vfive only said a guy was behind me, omgawd so pro).

And I took this nifty picture during my first match. I think it's pretty epic >_>

Yeah, I have the same problem.. with the DMR too. It might be how the shields are, making it not as noticeable when I hit someone.

I think there should be at least some sort of "tink" sound when you hit someone.

Where's this grenade launcher at?

In the Showers. You have to bend over to get it.

I don't mind either map. They're simply OK though. I LOVE Swat though, very fun. Elites are great too. Really like the direction this game is heading in.

EvaPlusMinus said:

In the showers on Powerhouse. It's pretty hard to see honestly, very camouflaged. I find most matches I get into now one person on each side sprints toward it and we duke it out over grenade launcher. Pretty fun, but hard to control for sure.

Let's get the problems with the game out of the way.

1. Reticle is way too light (in opacity and color). I absolutely cannot tell if I'm on someone's head when the action gets intense.

2. Grenades are either too powerful or the sound effects and visuals are making it seem that way because they seem like mini nukes.

3. Armor lock is way overpowered. Rarely does the person waiting win the match, it's always the person who comes out of armor lock.

4. Pistol clip is way too small. Either up the body damage or give us a few more bullets.

5. The ghosting is really bad. I don't know what it is but the ghosting is really bad. Look at the melee animations.

Good stuff.

1. Elites and dodge roll are amazing. Finally the elites look like they did in Halo 1.

2. The death animations are AMAZING. Absolutely spot on.

3. Jetpack animations are also amazing.

4. Needle rifle sound effects and feel of the gun are fantastic. It actually feels like a powerful gun. Same with the focus rifle.

Love Halo 1 (and I hope my pistol is finally really really back), and it took me some getting used to, but I learned to love Halo 2. I thought Halo 3 was awful awful awful and could never get used to it. I hope I like this game. Waiting patiently for May 3rd, as I'm ever so slightly to busy to worry about this expertzone stuff...

Have to get ready for an early flight tomorrow. I await Sunday Night, Monday Morning.

At first I thought the Focus Rifle was rigged as shit, but the more I used it the more I realized it wasn't. Unlike a Sniper Rifle, you can't kill someone in a split second. The Focus Rifle takes a constant stream of energy that cannot be broken, with very little room for missing during the period. It's easier to kill at close range than a sniper, but on maps like Power House (only level I've seen it on) it's very easy to avoid at long distances.

I think it's a perfect compliment to the Sniper Rifle.

Yeah but you're not really in a position to launch a counter-attack on a focus rifler when you're pinned down by a constant stream of orange death.

You're not, but your teammates are.

That and, at least now, it doesn't seem terribly difficult to sidestep out of the way of it. The beam isn't *that* wide.

Kenak said:

Huh? You can pump it all night long. Barely consumes ammo. Back when we were getting videos I thought it was as you said, continuous fire like an extended splaser and was balanced that way, but nopes. Also the stun on it is just hilarious.

How come no one is discussing the new sound devices? I love having the sound drain out when a grenade goes off next to me.

Hey I've only ever done this one other time for the Quake Live beta codes which none of you jerks helped me out with but I got in eventually. I could wait a few days but can someone please hook me up with a code, I would really appreciate it. It would make my shitty day a little better.

Speaking of which, I'm puzzled as to the reasoning behind the sound all but disappearing when you're in active camo. Is it supposed to be a balance issue, or some sort of "it does it because in the universe the technology screws up your hearing" type thing, or something silly?
