Halo: Reach Beta Thread

It seems the die hard halo fans hate it. While the people who are fans but not so zealous love it.

Not true. I'm a die hard Halo fan and absolutely love it. Where are people getting to play with the grenade launcher?

Grenades are awesome. They do not need to be tweaked.
Pistol does need a few more shots/clip.
Jetpack should be toggle like sprint.
Sword Base is a so-so map.
Crazy King needs to move on the minute (not 30 sec.).
Covy Slayer is the best version of slayer I have played in years.
Power weapons respawn pretty slowly for non-round based games.

Needs to be a sound like Halo 3 when the game finds players. Too many times I've missed voting while I've been in a menu or something because I didn't realise what was happening.

I hate most of the human weapons. I hate how they feel. I feel like I'm doing something wrong when I have one in my hands. Covenant weapons feel great though.

Only got to play 7 games last night. Lost the first one since I had 2 people (from GAF) quit out during the first round of CTF on Swordbase. Managed to win the rest of the games though and had a great time. Weapons feel a little weak, except the face melter. Love the pistol as a starting weapon but as others have mentioned, it would be great if it had a slightly larger clip. Can't wait for DMR / Nerfle starts. Also can't wait to get in a bunch of games this weekend.

Dani, can you accept my FR to HALOGAFBETA2? Would love to get in some games with some of you guys.

Couple of vids from last night

1) Slow frenzy - my first killing frenzy in Reach. Bit slow at times but the face melter plays a large role:

2) It's back - the return of the hilarious super melee:

Sooo many quitters. I feel like I'm playing Gears of War.

Are there any measures to deter quitting? I always thought quitting should be a -2 loss, easy solution. Screw people with unstable connections - they're liabilities and should be labeled as such.

This. I switch over to my monitor when searching for a quick browse, and I miss voting entirely.

Just got randomly popped into a game with Sai and Dani :) 1 Flag on Swordbase has become so much fun with that little throw onto the ledge.

And yes, we won that game, Sai :3

Haha, that makes two of us.

Well, played the game last night. Gotta say that I haven't played an fps this unentertaining in a long time. First fps I've played in a while where I can have a full audible, coherent conversation with my girlfriend while playing. It's that dull and not immersive. Gonna play over the weekend before i give out my full assessment. Gotta give the hype some respect I guess.

Anyone else a heavy CQC player and find the trading melee deaths happens too often? I consistently have 3+ death trades where both players melee.

I vaguely remember hearing something about a time window in this specific case in which the other player can react and get a kill as well. I don't remember if it was speculation or an official source. Sound familiar to anyone, or did I take the wrong pills this morning?

Here's some gameplay I recorded last night (should be in HD in an hour or so, depending on youtube). This one guy on my team kept trying to betray me every time I got the sniper rifle. Also I don't know what was going on with the energy sword. I clearly hit the guy 2 times and he still didn't die.

I've already played 60 games and have 8 hours logged in lol
Damn, and I thought playing 5 hours yesterday was a lot. I've played 31 games and 21 are wins. Pretty good for the first day.

The plasma launcher is way overpowered.
Yeah, the tracking is too much for bipeds.

To everyone who thinks grenades are overpowered, I think we should wait until we play games with vehicles. I love the grenades now. Frags in Halo 3 never seemed to do much damage, but now they can be skillfully placed to get kills.

I started around one and didn't stop playing for a second. No game has been able to hold my attention for more than 3 hours max without burning me out. I am still no where near burnt out lol.

The game plays as close to CE as any of the Halo's and true Halo fans and skilled players love it!

It is not noob friendly, which is great they can go play COD.

Graphically not a lot different just dull/grainy compared to other halo's but that's by design.

If you don't give the game at least 15 games to get a feel for it you are judging too early.

Elites are bad ass!

Being unable to enter a new game until the one you left is finished feels like the only good way to deter quitting. Shouldn't be too hard to implement but no one ever does it.

Alternatively I think people who have quit out of a certain number (or percentage) of games should get a "mark of shame" of sorts, something that tells people "okay this guy is not someone I want on my team".

As a long time Halo fan but only lurker of HaloGAF, I am really loving what I've played so far. A lot of the posts here remind me of when Halo 2 came out and very similar complaints were voiced about how different and "un-Halo" it felt (I felt the same and it ended up my favorite MP Halo game), definitely give it some time. Only niggle I've found is that I feel like many of the base weapons need to be cranked up in power just a tad. The DMR, Nerfle, Assault Rifle, Plasma Repeater, and maybe the Pistol all feel like they take a little too long to cap targets. Then again, I've only been playing for a day and may just need more time to get used to the reticule bloom.

One last thought before I call it a night:

Stockpile on the outdoor map is unbalanced. The team returning flags downhill has an advantage. If someone on the downhill team makes it to the top, he can take the flags from the scoring area (at the top) and throw them down into the water basin while only carrying the flag a few steps. Then a jump throw down into the water is all it takes to force a long route back to the top for those who want to return it. There is no equal "throw away" zone for the opposing team.

Just some food for thought.

Someone several pages back was complaining that the very same game was unbalanced because the uphill team had the advantage, just something to think about.

Core game is so much better than Halo 3 it's not even funny, the dynamics are much more interesting to me now that all the weapons are relatively useful and people can choose an armor ability to use whenever they want. I also like the return to fall damage and the removal of the goofy ass floaty jump descent, quite a few times I watched would be jetpackers break their legs on the landing :lol

Headhunters is also ridiculously fun for an ffa gametype, but I always loved that in any fps so I'm biased. I like the idea of Stockpile, but both times I played it the teams were really confused about what was going on so I couldn't get a good feel for how a match would play out.

I agree.

And I am already getting tired of quitters.

Oh yeah I forgot to give a shout out to HEADHUNTER, I am having so much fun with that mode. Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of trying to make it to a collection point after you've amassed a large number of skulls.

The plasma launchers range has to be reduced IMO. Damage probably isn't the issue.

I haven't had much problem with it on Swordbase because I can usually cut around corners to avoid the lock-on, but I can see it being problematic on open maps or versus vehicles.

Anyone else just love the elites? They are fucking power houses now and playing as them actually changes a lot of things and makes the game much more fast paced like Halo 2.

Absolutely. I've only had the chance to play one Covy Slayer game, but it was a blast and I wish it would come up more frequently.

Oh yes, the mobility and closing in on targets is so incredibly satisfying. Can stalk people so easy to set up easy kills.

Yes. Love Covie Slayer.

So far that and stock pile are great. I am loving these elite and Spartan separated games it allows gameplay to change depending on what you are playing as. Now all we need is brutes lol

Ugh I just had a guy on my team in stockpile that would wait until the flag were being counted in ten seconds and he would take one and run off with it and teabag the ground looking at me until I chased him so yeah I betrayed him to get the flag back twice! Because we were winning. I got booted. What a douchebag.

I figured out the problem, now I have my 5 free minutes :D

Bit of a shame it takes up one complete render minute to turn a 15 second clip into a wmv, annoying... :/ looks like i'm going to be super picky with my videos.

Hope you fellows are having fun! Sadly don't own a 360, but watching the youtube vids...the sound design brings back the memories. The energy shield...such a golden recharge hum.

Get back to it!

Yes I love how the covenant feel completely seperate and not a spartan reskin with plasma load out. Their roll is also great for mixing up the fighting and getting your ass out of trouble, they are going to be so awesome in the bigger mixed playlists later on in the beta.

My awesome double kill via stealth clip

Seriously awesome, right?

Seriously overpowered, right?

"Oh no, I'm about to die and the guy who is killing me has 75% of his shield and all his health, I know I'll throw a grenade." *dies, grenade explodes killing the the other player, "oh look, I got a kill with my grenade!!!"

It's the only thing that needs toned down, plus grenade spam is almost as bad as CoD at times.

Armour Lock yo!

Yeah, grenades are powerful but at least they are useful now. Halo 3 nerfed them enough to be pointless.

Anybody else bothered somewhat by the art design? I couldn't tell you which map is which, to me they're all "the gray and brown one". They all need a dash of personality, and color.

I know i'm not going to get either :/

True.. in H3 you could just as well throw rotten fruit at those Spartans. I got a lot of kills in H2 with well places grenades, in H3 you had to stick em to be sure of a kill.

I am ok with powerful grenades, just make sure there are a finitee number of them.

Hmmm.. now that I think of it. I think I got a whole team kill badge (with grenades ;)
