Halo: Reach Beta Thread

oh that makes more sense. so what's the point of the fancy animation then?

That plasma beam thing feels way too strong.

Just that. It's a fancy animation. Think it gives you some extra credits too.

Yeah. It's in SD so that could be why, or it didn't render.

Oh, okay. I heard that some weapons were hard to use in the sense that you couldn't tell whether or not you hit people with them so I was about to agree with that when I couldn't see the reticule.

lol can anyone explain what is happening here?

Click

Crab was getting assassinated so I tried to punch the guy assassinating him... In game it was all a confusing blur. In the video it makes even less sense!

I assume you're the second Blue Man. You were about to finish assassinating Red Man #1, but Red Man #2 stopped you via AR bullet spam.

Arbitor is pretty cool to use now , that roll thing is great :D
but people are bringing back the old "noob combo" ;p :lol fireing with the plasma pistol then the needle br.
Reminds me of Halo 2

That kinda answers one of my questions, I guess you can cancel an assassination. That or someone got a secret teleporting move.

Yes you can cancel assassinations, it is pretty awesome... And I wish there was a medal for saving your friend as a result.

I am actually the second red guy, saving my team mate. My main concern is the fact that one of the blue guys straight up disappears :lol

Dear Bungie,
This may be completely unreasonable, but could you please add some audio for the announcer when voting for maps that says, "pay attention mother fuckers".
kthxbye

Good games to those who played with and against dboythagr8 (zayne, jury, violent, and everybody else) ! :D

I finally became comfortable with the game today (weapons, map layouts, armor..everything) and it showed. And whomever ViolentBreed is I'm sorry you don't like the game:lol :lol

Haha, great games. What was your GT again? I gotta add all you guys. and violentBREED is dslgunstar.

Dear Bungie, nerf grenades, its ridiculous when I get shot twice by a pistol and then a grenade taps my general radius and I die.

Add in move the player model over a bit when you look at individual players in the post carnage report so you can actually read the medals you earned. And add Xn next to each one so we know how many of each medal we got.

Oh, and maybe add "Preferred Weapon: X" under the games played and games won when you look at each player in the lobby. And make them hold that weapon too instead of the AR :D

The weapons feel like you can use just about anything and still come out on top...but the assault rifle does need a small increase in power. And yeah, the magnum does hide the crosshair when not aiming.

Weapon sounds are pretty strong though. Didnt know the roll shook off plasmas, so that would've cut most of my deaths from the last game :lol

I already asked that, hopefully it'll be included :D

I agree most of the small amount of games I've played nobody pays attention to the voting.

Lukes disgust in that one video, where he gave a gameplay demonstration to me everything I needed to know about the AR.

So I'll just be holding another one of these?

Big thanks to urk for giving me a code. One of my friends has been so obsessed with getting a code that he drove an hour just to get here and play the Beta. :lol

Some thoughts after a couple hours of playing:
  • I suck at Reach. :lol Still getting used to the controls/newness.
  • I don't understand how people don't think this "feels" like Halo.
  • The DMR is definitely weaker than I expected. I don't know if I can say it's weaker than it "should" be, but I'm not very good with it. GAFFer comments about a big skill gap in Reach are totally understandable.
  • I think the mechanics of the melee system fundamentally throw off how close combat should play out. The double melee is simply too fast, and takes the priority off of gun fights. Especially in conjunction with Sprint, it's too quick, and too often leads to guys just bumpin up against each other and meleeing.
  • The needler is AWESOME. <3 Maybe even too awesome, but I love it. And it burns through ammo, so I hope it doesn't get nerfed.
  • Pistol feels great, though I'm too much of a spazz to really get many kills from it. Gotta reload too much.
  • I'll echo the sentiment that grenades feel too powerful. I guess I liked grenades the most in Halo 2 (after the patch) where they had some punch, and you could hold a lot, but they were primarily good for warding off enemies because they weren't crazy powerful. Reach grenades and melee could each use a little toning down.
  • You have to stand really close to the flag to return it. A larger return radius would be nice, though maybe not necessarily as large as the default in Halo 3.

Yeah, I think the best thing to do would be to make "none of the above" the default option, so that if everyone acts like a slack ass they don't get out of the lobby and they're forced to pick something. It is kind of annoying to watch all the votes stack on something boring by default.

Once you get used to it, the Deemer gets a lot better. It could stand to be four-shots, but it definitely isn't as useless as I initially thought.

You wouldn't be holding a weapon. After all most of the time you're not using one apparently :lol

I whipped up a quick Java app to calculate the Arena rating. I messed around with it a little and found some weird things:

* The theoretical max is 2000, but you're never gonna get above 1844.

4loy2a.jpg

* Similarly, you're never gonna get anywhere near 0.

ng6q2o.jpg

* 1600 and 1700s are Tashi level

* As you can see from above, although it only docks you 4%, the loss penalty is not negligible.
* To get below 1000, you pretty much have to try to get below 1000.
* This must have some tweaks for FFA, since the max rating for FFA (players_per_team set to 1) is 1500.

If it doesn't work for you, then that is proof that I don't know what I'm doing lol.

The only problem I could see with this is that if everyone has to vote it, a group could hold the lobby "hostage". I would like to see it "none of the above" as well, but if nobody votes it would just randomly pick a game.

What they should do is not have all the votes count for the first playlist. The only way to have your vote count is to actually vote. If people don't vote, it is their own damn fault. If only 1 person votes, then that is the game that is played.

Just thought I'd toss this out there early: someone other than myself needs to make the official Reach thread. I'm not digging this game enough to put the work into it.

After a second evening of playing, the list of problems I have with Reach has grown drastically. It really is a bit of a mess, and is absent the core of what made the other Halo games great. It's not beyond saving, but several of the core gameplay systems need overhauling in ways I'm not confident will take place between now and ship; this game plays like something I do not want to play for very long.

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

Yup, that's one of them. The golden tripod is utterly broken. I really, really hate the close quarters combat in this game.
I agree with you, I am frustrated.

I actually like that better than my idea.

Ghaleon's meltdown is quite epic.

It's not really a meltdown, more of a live blog of his feelings. I usually veer quite closely to him in terms of FPS tastes (I, too, love BTB in Halo games and didn't like Bioshock or HL2), but I've quite liked my time with the Reach Beta so far. I only have about as many total games under my belt as he had at the end of yesterday though, so we'll see if I stay at my current contented state. But with my current over booked schedule, I may not get any significant time with it until Wednesday.

A bit. My initial reaction yesterday was sharply negative, as is well documented at this point. I was feeling a touch more positive at the end of the day yesterday, but my bottom line, as I said, was that Reach didn't feel like a Halo game to me. Generally speaking, I don't like FPS; Halo was the only exception (okay, and the original DOOM). HL2 and Bioshock are two others that I bought and played through but didn't really care for.

I often make snap judgments about games; I give most games about ten minutes, and if I don't like them after that I stop playing them. Were the game I played and posted about most of yesterday not called Halo, I'd have stopped playing it. But it is, so I kept at it hoping to learn the new model. I found several things to like about it, and listed them at the end of the day yesterday. Today added to the list of things I didn't enjoy, tipping the balance further. I'm just not having much fun with Reach, despite the many things it does well. It does not feel like Halo to me at all; it's this alien thing that looks like Halo, and mimics many of Halo's attributes, but the foundation that game was build on is just not there. I just can't escape that conclusion.

You're more of a BTB guy, maybe Invasion will be more to your liking =)

It's 7am here and I need to get to sleep, so I'll post some more impressions later.

I'm really confused as to what Halo you have been playing. The core of this game is the same, decent console shooter. If movement speed between the first 3 iterations wasn't enough to bother you, does it now? How about reticule placement? Damage registry? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwCoi1lpj34
You should revisit the old games, their 'feel' isn't that far from this.

All that's really happened, from a player perspective, is rebalancing.

Like, I get that you don't like FPS games, and that's awesome, but your complaints are sort of retro. It doesn't seem like you've actually been playing Halo these past years.

Which makes me wonder, if you're not down for the changes what have you been doing? Have you gotten progressively better at Halo with the more time you've sunk in or did you just decide that leveling off at some point was the best way to invest your time? To each his own but really, if you have been playing Halo for this many years and you're not whining about how the pistol was perfect (and ignoring balancing ideas) then what happened? It doesn't make sense. You should be better than the old Halo games to appreciate Reach for a step forward.

Reach is practically a slap in the face to Halo 3, it feels like the next step in the series multiplayer while 3 felt like filler.

Sorry, I really just don't get you.

Not to beat a dead horse, but what exactly are you guys frustrated with? I'm annoyed that nades are so strong and wish the pistol had an extra bullet in it, but otherwise this game has pretty much lost it's flaws in my eyes.

I just posted this on Bungie.net, but Veto 2.0 needs to change a bit, instead of having all votes start off on the first game type, have it so its set to 0 on all game types, because I have been in so many games where NO ONE feels like voting or are away while voting, I barley actually get any other gametypes in grab bag because of this, so go fix this :lol
