Halo: Reach Beta Thread

But, you're much more likely to live in this game if you stay away from CQC and pistol headshot people to death who want to charge in w/ a melee. Esp. considering the power of grenades.
Absolutely, and the same is true for sword, hammer, and shotgun as well. Pistol is brutal at knocking out those threats.

Went 30 - 9 in a Stockpile game, biggest spread so far.

Armor Lock is seriously overpowered :lol

I am curious if Bungie would nerf it during the beta

they need to get rid of the EMP burst, the enemy shield dropping when attempting a melee and the safety from disengaging from armor lock (which allows a melee kill, ugh)

if they do that, it'll be awesome because you have to properly pick your spots and it will still be pretty deadly against vehicles

A lot of people here keep saying that. I have a feeling it'll be toned down for the final release, but I'm in the camp that likes it the way it is. It creates a really nice risk vs. reward dynamic.

Only part I agree with is the post-lock safety period. I'd rather have it initialize and end faster than it does now, so there's no tailing "grace period" for the user.

Armor Lock will become less powerful over time as people figure out how it works and how to counter it.

It's an entirely new concept unlike all the other armor abilities which still have the simple counter of shooting the person, so it'll take some getting used to.

Pro tip: Move backwards

Pro Tip: Move backwards, wait 2-3 seconds; throw grenade, shoot.

If you have no grenade, improvise, or run.

I rarely die by somebody coming back from an armor lock, usually I either just leave them alone and move on, or time my grenade, works every time.

A story told in screen shots.

In a game of one flag, one friend of mine has the rockets, the other one is standing in the way of an enemy.

In a panic my friend decides to fire a rocket anyways, forgetting that our buddy is right in front of the enemy.

CAN HE ARMOR LOCK IN TIME?!

Yes, yes he can. He armor locks, punching the rocket to the side, remaining safe and avoiding a betrayal.

As for the guy on blue team? Well...

Everything is starting to click, and I'm loving it. So, so much love.

And I don't think I've said it thus far, but here's a general good fucking work, Bungie crew. Seriously.

wow awesome. Got stuck in a match with a bunch of 4chan bottom dwellers. Almost felt like turning off proximity chat after that.
This reminds me. Why is proximity chat still on in Arena? Isn't is supposed to be off in ranked matches?

Does anybody still like the Needle Rifle? The gun just feels like a piece of shit compared to the DMR.
I only get kills with it when I shoot people who've already had their shields stripped. It seems a little weak to me compared to the DMR, which is sweet, sweet bliss.

Maybe my opinion will change the more people play but the jetpack seems fine so far. It's not great for all situations and it CAN make you a sitting duck but using it effectively really pays off. It's great for setting up flanking positions and often times it'll make you a harder target if you go way up. I was on ridiculous killstreak earlier using it and the needler earlier JUST going from the water basin on Powerhouse to the top area of the map where the DMR spawns. I gues they didn't expect me to just jet way way up :lol

I'd just like to cosign the awesome slow burn of Halo: Reach. The first couple of days it just didn't feel like Halo to me, the melees were all wrong, the nade trajectory felt weird, no BR pissed the shit out of me.

Last night it all clicked. Big time. There's a lot of depth to this game. Can't wait till MLG get a hold of this, it has the potential to be awesome for competitive gaming I reckon.

It all depends on the maps at this stage. Hopefully they're on par with The Pit, Midship, Lockout, et al.

I love this multiplayer. Such a breath of fresh air after the Call of Duty's slot machine gameplay (I feel like activision could randomly have 1 in 50 matches played be populated entirely with bots instead of players and nobody would know) and the Meh-tastic Halo 3 experience.

I love this game. Thanks Bungie.

Armor lock to block grenades, block power weapons, block off entrances, rechare shields, or buy time. You should hardly ever sit there holding down Armor Lock until you drain the whole thing.

Stop acting like its only use is people using it in the wide open while you're off in back.

I think my brain broke playing Arena tonight. After a while I was so in my head about the score that I performed kinda terrible. I felt like I was camping way too much, scared to die. I know that kills and assists are weighted way more than deaths but it didn't matter. My last game of the night I went 2-6. WTF is that! I started off the night with a bunch of half decent games but all I can think about is my last couple of games where I turtled like a bitch. Damn you stupid number, damn you.

I love it because of how different it feels from the DMR. With the DMR, you REALLY have to abide by the reticule bloom to deal any damage. With the Needle Rifle, you can spam that trigger, and while you wont get a five-shot kill you can super-combine for a kill.

having the same problem. my first 6 games were great but I have been sucking the more I'm focusing on trying not to die.

Decided to finally cave and renew my bugnie pro account. Now it's saying I still have to sign in for it to recognize? Do I just have to wait for servers to catch up or something?

As far as Arena goes, I'm usually AWESOME my first 3 games then it's downhill from there.

When I play Arena all I do is make sure I communicate with my team and try to win the match. The stats are going to come regardless so I try to just not pay attention to them and win. :D

Also finished with a 1673. :D

1610 for today, because Im too tired to redo a 1593 game.

More importantly, Im maintaining a 1.6 K/D ratio (as opposed to 1.2 in Grab Bag, where fighting for flags leads to increased deaths). And doing it with the AR too, haters! :lol

I will admit, Arena is far more addictive than I thought it would be.

Too bad the douchebag quotient is through the roof in this playlist. I've never been teabagged so much in one match before.

I mean really, is EVERY kill, no matter how sloppy worthy of putting your balls in my face? REALLY?!

1.98 K/D in Arena and still only around 1600. Fuck me.

Getting kill frenzies and multikills seems to really boost your score beyond the bounces of the simple K/D ratio. Dont know if it actually does, but it SEEMS that way.

1654...im suprised cause I started out pretty awful. I haven't looked through the thread in a while, do we know what scores fall under each division?
it is percentage based.

like the top 2% is onyx, top 10% is gold, ect.

We don't know how they are going to split it, yet.

Yes and no. We know that certain scores dont line up with specific divisions. So you can get a 1600 and be in steel, or get a 1600 and be in Onyx, it all depends on how good the players you played with/against are.

Its like an SAT test, you score lands you in a percentile of the population. If 99% of the population scores a 1654, then you're average and you could end up in Silver. If 5% of the population scores 1654, then you're on your way to Onyx.

That's a super simplistic way of looking at it.
