Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Well, Im loving Arena.

Not 100% sold on how the formula is balanced. I agree that assists should have a weighting but seems like a player who runs in and goes negative k/d but gets a lot of assists can end up with a better rating than someone who stays positive k/d and gets more kills but less assists.

Debatable who is doing all the work in that scenario but feel like a positive k/d should count for something. That said, dont want a camp fest either.

Daily rating for yesterday was 1659. Pretty happy with that.

I seem to play much much better in arena than grab bag. Havign that little number ticking over keeps me nicely on track.

Also, pistol is win.

So I go to sleep and when I wake up I find that I dropped from Onyx to Silver. Which I think is a more accurate division for me.:lol

Still it was fun to be Onyx for a day. :D

Hey kind of random here, but since Forge mode is in Reach, anyone else here think it would be awesome if you could do simple levels of programing on objects and game types (ie: Kodu, Alice, ect)

My entire party just got rated. I'm in Onyx, I believe?

Halo 2 was worse than 3...

Not true... I'm not talking about Auto Aim. Halo 2's aiming was overall more responsive due to the lack of smoothing in acceleration and deceleration.

Yes. Invasion starts up today.

Bring it.

Wort!

It will be interesting to see how the "overpowered" grenades work against vehicles.

I think I will be playing Invasion all weekend.

Bungie should record some stats for Invasion, just to see which race is winning the Invasion stakes. It would also be interesting to see how far people get in the Invasion, if they manage to hold on till the end or shut people down early.

Personally I am looking forward to Invasion for 2 reasons. 1) Objective Gameplay 2) Games potentially lasting longer that 2 mins. :lol

Good call on the grenades versus vehicles. Very interested in seeing how durable vehicles are. I wonder if you'll have to double melee them too. :P Shield thing is so annoying.

As soon as that Wraith rolls in, people will be crying for a Grenade Buff. :lol

I'm guessing sprint will be people's best friend. :P

People will be crying about Armour Lock even more I think. Its going to lead to some epic Spartan Vs Vehicle battles with everyone hunkering down in AL.

I love the new plasma pistol in Reach. I've already gotten more kills with the plasma pistol in the Beta than all my time in Halo 3.:lol

I was about to post something similar. The Plasma Pistol is so beast. Its definitely more effective in Covy Slayer though.

Armor Lock needs so much fixing -_-.

Being able to use it twice in one charge?
Invulnerability for a second before and after using it? (whoever at Bungie thought this up was a couple pieces short of a chess game)
GAINING shield when holding it down?
Immune to plasma grenades even though they hit you before you AL'd?

To anyone decent here, if you really want to see how LOL-worthy AL is, just play with a good team of 4 players and have everyone use it. It's absolutely hilariously bad.

Really, any team that all use jetpacks, camo, or whatever kills the fun factor in this game. I have no idea what bungie could do to help this, but it really needs looking into. And no, it's not a case of "WELL GOSH JUST OUTPLAY THEM LOLZ".

Sprint, Jetpack, and Camo seem well implemented, but Armor Lock needs to be revised, especially for the second and third points you made.

I think sprint is stupid in the games where it's the only armor ability that you can use. Hammer, Sword, Shotgun just get 10x more powerful than they already are. Who decided that sprint should be the default armor ability on pro and classic? Turn that shit off in my opinion and let's have a classic game type with no armor abilities at all.

BOOOOOOO!
I bet you don't like Covie Slayer too

Fun Arena story from last night:

While waiting for HydraNockz to finish his game I hop in, so get matched with 3 randoms.
We start, go 1 - 4, one guy quits. Go 8 - 17 and the other 2 quit, so it's me vs 4, match rating curernt 1120.
I consider quitting, but it's something I hate more than anything. I hate quitters and I hate quitting.
I stay on, battle with a sadistic grin on my face to crawl and fight to an end score of 30 - 32 just when time runs out, bumping my Arena rating with a score of 1565.

:D

Not so fun Grab Bag story from last night:
Glitched match?
Game starts, seems 'alright', lags, 3 teammates gone. Games seriously lags, stays in black screen for > 2 minutes, ends.
Video in file share here.

I feel like Reach's jumping is pretty similar to CE (something I don't miss from CE), except CE didn't have so much shit to get caught on and the player movement was faster. Shadowrun had really floaty jumps IIRC, maybe even floatier than Halo 2/3.

I loved Shadowrun and played the shit out of it. The gameplay and sandbox were really well crafted. The magic abilities where really well balanced for the most part and most importantly fun to use (teleport led to some incredible firefights) but the gunplay itself was its weakest component. I feel like Reach brought over elements of Shadowrun's weak gunplay (a set backwards in the series but not as mediocre as Shadowrun's) but didn't fell way short of Shadowrun's player abilities. It's like they tried to meld the two together but going halfway in between led to a worse experience. The AAs in Reach aren't integrated with the core gameplay/sandbox nearly as well as Shadowrun's.

I get the feeling that Reach is a product of a team tired of making the same Halo game but held back from crafting gameplay tuned specifically for a new experience by the desire to keep it feeling like Halo. Would've much rather them stick to tradition or scrap it all and make a totally fresh, focused experience than what I've gotten out of the beta. From the list of changes already made from the beta it's hard to tell how the final product will play, but I'm definitely more concerned about the game than I was coming into the beta and just wish I could take a look at New IP.

This makes a lot of sense, am I right in thinking that Reach and ODST were only made because of a clause in the contract when Bungie split from MS?

I am also pretty concerned about the game, it took me a while to get over the initial 'hump' to fun, im loving it at the moment, but im not loving it as much as I have loved Halo in the past.

Grats, I managed to pull a 1550 out a 2v4 after half our team quit (you know who you are :D) the other day which felt kinda good.

On either Monday or Tuesday all three of my teammates dropped out of an Arena game about ten seconds into it. I managed to go on and win it 1v4, getting humped every step of the way.

It's unfortunate how "late" Invasion is going up. Thought it'd be up in an hour or two

I also don't like Sprint when it's the only ability you can use. But that's because my controller's so broken that I can't really use Sprint =P =(

Nice, that must have pissed the other team off :lol

Sorry, what time is it going up? (Timezone?)

The latest from the field:

I have four replays to study in order to figure out exactly how I managed a -10 k/d ratio across as many games. Either I qualify for a platinum Darwin Award or grenades are even more fucking ridiculous than I thought.

It hurts to be so awful at such a great game. I don't think I have the stomach for any more Reach until Invasion hits.

In happier news, I gots mah Oonsk. He's currently adorning the right shoulder of my Spartan dude.

I figured out why I like this much better than Halo 3 now.

Lack of circle strafers due to decreased strafing speed and lack of jumpers due to smaller jump height means that less people are jumping around in circles during a firefight. The lack of that bullshit allows my lack of skill to shine beautifully.

Fixed it.

Grenade power may be the same as ever, but all of the following have changed:

  • The damage done at the fringes of the grenade radius has increased.
  • It is harder to outrun a grenade, because movement speed has decreased.
  • It is harder to jump away from a grenade, because jump height has decreased.
  • Without Armor Lock or an extremely well-timed Sprint, you aren't getting away from a grenade any other way.
  • Players are more likely to have sub-optimal health in Halo: Reach than in Halo 3, even if they are diligent about hunting down health packs.

Meanwhile, grenades are seemingly as plentiful as they ever were. And while surviving one grenade is a fine thing, an enemy is likely going to toss out everything he has if he's close to death, and if he's not alone, you will often find three or more frags bouncing around you. Given that many people are struggling to aim with the single-shot weapons (which I firmly believe is their failing, not the game's), it's easier to just unload every grenade you have into a space you believe an enemy to be in, especially if you suspect he is weak. Often I just lob a grenade at any red Xs I'm near, because I'm likely to catch someone with their shield(/pants) down.

To boot, the two maps we've experienced so far have a lot of tight, confined spaces that encourage grenade spam.

So, sure, they may be just as 'powerful' in terms of raw damage as they ever were. But the context for that power has changed.

That explains it all.

A tweak to the damage curve is all that's needed.

Still don't like the double melee Mortal Kombating though.

Don't worry, you haven't lost touch with how good you are at Halo.

Wow, just looking at my Arena stats, they are sooooo much better than my stats everywhere else. Apparently I've been kiling it with the DMR and Pistol too.

Oh and if anybody is interested: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/default.aspx?player=RandomlyRossy

I think 5 Star is Onyx, 4 is Gold, 3 is Silver, 2 is Steel, 1 is...um....Sponge cake.

Was the star rating removed from bungie.net? I wanted to see if I dropped down to gold today but it's completely not there.

Invasion will be my home tonight, can't wait, i'm excited to play def with spartans then attacking as elites, always feels good to be the weaker side trying your best.
