Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Really had a bad first taste of Invasion.

The team spawning as Elite get shafted, the distance from Spawn to the territory destination is quite large and you have to stay in cover other the Spartans just poop on you from the heights.

The Elite choice of weapons and Armour Abilities are poop too, choosing the Plasma Repeater leaves you open to being spotted from miles off and the Camo gives you the Needler which is pretty ineffective in tight corridors and hallways of the first Phase.

Why do the territory timer increase randomly? As Elites we got one territory down to one second and it magically jumped to six seconds.

Invasion Slayer is also just sloppy. Every starts with AR's on the huge open Boneyard map, no Armour Abilities, no vehicles, just tossing nades and spitting AR fire at each other is so poor. It's all confusing as the teams capture territories and nothing happens - repeat about six or seven times.

Waiting to Spawn can be a pain in the ass - I was waiting almost a minute to respawn because the game wouldn't let me choose an alternative to my "spawn bro" who was in a firefight - so lame staring at the screen for such a long time doing nothing.

The Warthog is still nice, even though it seems to handle slightly more sluggishly, the Banshee also seems like it's swimming through tar instead of powering through the air and the low invisible ceiling coupled with the clustered geometry make piloting the thing a pain rather than a pleasure.

Not happy at all with my first impressions of Invasion/Slayer. =\

Aye, those were my experiences as well (sans Slayer, I didn't get to play that, the quasi-custom game aside).

For Invasion, are there only two ways for the Elites to approach, the stairwells on the left and right hand side of the ship? They were the only ones I could find but I'm assuming there's a third way; the area is so huge and open I imagine there's one or two other routes I'm missing.

Where did 'pro pipe' come from?
I think it was from the multiplayer trailer. Either from Bungie themselves or the dude that was analyzing it frame by frame and put up a video. It's a dumb alternative to "noob tube"

Thanks for opinions all, I will give it a few days. Once the beta started the opinions evened out after a few days so I assume once people figure out Invasion and weapon placements it will be fine.

I will play in about 30 min. :D

I just had an odd bug where I got into the Warthog and no matter what buttons I pressed, I could not get out again. :lol I just had to drive around, trying to splatter people and hope someone put me out of my misery.

Invasion feels a little mixed at present. I love the idea but the spawning mechanic needs some tweaking. I would often choose to spawn on my bro, find he was busy but the game would not give me the option to spawn elsewhere.

I agree that the Spartan start is a little unfair but then elites have a Camo option and their obvious race benefits. I found them getting into the main base without too many issues. I am glad I found the Rocket Launcher upstairs. Makes it so much easier once the Wraith rolls in. :lol

The MP trailer analysis video by the folks at TTL dubbed it "Pro Pipe" and we officially adopted it immediately after.

Played another game and I have more complaints.

1. Boneyard is ugly. Yea yea big map...see BC2

2. The games are over too quickly and they don't swap sides once completed...see BC2

3. Vehicles are deathtraps and the map is poorly designed for vehicle usage...too much shit lying around. Vehicles get funneled through small gates/passageways. The Banshee can't hardly fly anywhere and doesn't seem to have the fuel rod missile equiped. Pro pipe rounds disable vehicles....you can choose to spawn with a pro pipe...figure that one out.

4. Elites spawn with swords which eventually leaves everyone with swords.

5. BTB spanks the shit out of this mode. Please tell me this hasn't officially replaced classic Big Team.
For the first two points: see full game. And Boneyard is a beautiful map, at least the skybox is. For the games I've experienced, not everyone runs around with swords. I hardly ever pick it up myself.

I think Dax coined it or at least adopted it. I really don't like the name at all as it's not indicative at all of the weapon or what it does.
It's extremely hard to get a one-hit kill with the Pro Pipe.

Loving Invasion, but I also live and breathe Bad Company, so it's cool to see some of that game bleeding over.

A couple of tips for people feeling like the mode is unbalanced/ dont like being Elites:

-There are three needle rifles at the first spawn for elites, one for each team of two; left, middle, and right.

-Most spartans tend to bunch up in the middle of the platform looking out to the middle so they can pepper with their DMRs. Just take the lower side routes, it's like 5 seconds of running.

-Once you are in the base, things get pretty easy peezy, as most of the Spartans are gonna be using 1 grenade, DMR kits. Having a couple of Inviso elites make it easier.

-Be aware of who your 'partner' is. If he is dead, hang back and crouch walk a bit. he will respawn on you soon.

-This is a team game, so if you are playing by yourself, some of your games are gonna be brutal just because of shitty teammates, that's just the nature of the beast.

-After the first base pops, to the right AND left side a laser beam rifle and plasma cannon spawn,
if you cant do some damage with those, somethings wrong.

-If the spartans start camping with the tank, run and grab one of the two plasma cannons.

-After the match, watch it in theatre, fly around the map at each base change and look for weapons, there is quit a few tucked into nooks and crannies everywhere.

I really think the mode is going through growing pains right now. People feel that the mode is unbalanced/sucks because they dont know where the weapons are, what routes to take, etc..
After today, the mode is going to start playing differently i think.

That being said, I do wish it was longer, particularly when the core is in play. My favorite times in halo are when the objective is inching across the map with a battle raging around it, wish they gave us more time with that.

Onyx, what a relief. Copped a screengrab because I'm not sure how long it'll last haha, especially since it's probably all Invasion (and NT1) all the time from here on out.

The DMR is such a beast on Boneyard. Love it.

Really? I didn't find it all that difficult. The second time I picked it up I was able to get ~5 kills in a row with it. And I was playing on F&F weekend, so the kids weren't complete scrubs.

Our little Dax is all grown up. I'm so proud. *sheds a tear*

I made a lot of those complaints, but due to the eliteness of HaloGAF I should direct you to this.

The spawn locations encourage one of your fire team to stay alive and play tactically. This is a good thing. The spawn times are pretty damn short. There's a Nerfle not far from where you spawn initially, if you're spawning in view of the ship, and often you spawn to one side, where you can easily sneak in. There are additional weapons lying around, including DMRs you can snag before the Spartans set eyes on you, if you're crafty. Plus, you know, take their weapons. As soon as Phase 2 kicks in, you have Nerfle whenever you want it.

Invasion Slayer will be 8v8 in the full game.

Edit: also, without being snarky, all three of the Elite spawning weapons are pretty decent if you engage on the right terms.

You guys do know the whole name of Pro-Pipe is a joke right?

Like it's just a parody of the Noob-Tube from COD.

Since Pro-Pipe like Noob-Tube is easier to say than Grenade Launcher, it sticks easier.

I don't think I played a single team game last night without at least one person quiting. It seems rampant in the Beta.

There's no punishment in any playlist. Hopefully in the final game, there will be a major cR penalty for SEVERAL games after the one you quit, and a major hit against your Arena ranking.

How about automatic Steel for anyone that quits?

Or a Brown 6 'Turd' division for quitters? :lol

One of the best ways I've found for the elites to approach the first phase of Invasion is to have one guy on each fireteam equip invis. Those guys go far right, don't outright attack, and use invis to stay alive as needed.
The other guys charge across open ground, and get killed pretty easily (causing somewhat of a distraction). They then respawn on their bro just inside the rightmost entrance, then attack all at once.

Yeah, we know it's a joke. Pro pipe just doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't sound right.

Thats some awesome tactics right there. :lol

I also just played a glitch Invasion Slayer with AR starts for all and no armor abilities. I also could only respawn on my battle bro, so if he was in combat I had to wait for him to die or get out of harms way. Once he died, I would respawn off him after he respawned.

I really like Invasion Slayer, it's BTB with capture points to earn better weapons and gear, great mix!

Regular Invasion is taking a little time to get use too, team keeps not knowing where to go or end up just playing it like slayer without capping points, good fun though.

I won my first game of Invasion, as an Elite. What's everyone complaining about?

Okay, my second game as an Elite we got skunked at the first objective, and I accidentally tagged my battle bro as he spawned in front of a plasma grenade I was throwing.

It'll have some teething problems, but so far I've enjoyed it. Gonna play more soon.

Disclaimer: any and all negative thoughts about Invasion are framed by my overall negative train of thought brought on by the lacklustre and disappointing state of British politics. I do optimistically hold on to hope that I need time to properly get to grips with Invasion. There is hope here where as politically, in the UK, there is none.

After a few more Invasion (Slayer) games I think Elites are slightly overpowered.
I've played 5 games if invasion slayer and elites have won every game. I wonder what ratio Bungie has collected on this so far.

lol I don't want you to do anything, but I figured I would let everyone know in case it's happening to someone else. It is a beta after all!

Trasher maybe try rebooting the Xbox?

You know what, this year is turning out to be pretty shitty, the Pound is going to be worth fuck all once Reach comes out.

Got one. Both teams spawned with ARs and couldn't choose loadouts until next tier. Also for a little bit I couldn't spawn in the normal area, just on my teammate.

Loading in file share now.
Yeah that was probably a bug that I'm naming the dax-bug. We just spawned with just AR's without any AA's. Also, whenever we got a weapon drop, nothing happened.
Overall, Invasion compliments the Arena really well. The game type so far plays really well, I had lots of fun so far. Good games battle bros.

The core in Invasion has a weird return radius. You can be right on top and nothing will happen, or you can be off to the side and be returning it.

Just had a game where people were betraying me because I was returning the core and they wanted to be the one to return it. Fucking assholes.

Raise your hand if you think betrayals are an essential possibility in Halo, and that the game would be worse if there was no team damage.

Sure would solve a ton of problems in objective matches.

Finally a map where the DMR shines!

I'm starting to get the feel for the DMR, but I still think it should be a four-shot kill. In Halo 3, it was possible for a wounded player to win out against numerous enemies with perfectly-placed headshots and well-placed grenades.

This time, if you're shields are down and you manage to take out one enemy, you're always a sitting duck for the second one. There's no way to pull off a fast kill when you have to wait for the reitcule to recover for that last shot.

The bolded is a bug and NOT the intended experience.

I hate that medals you get at the end of the game don't count at all, I've missed out on 2 perfections a few running riots because of that, even though I got them ingame.

Essential...no. But important. The danger of taking out your own enemies ensures players arent wreckless about using grenades or rocket launchers. \

Apparently if you park the tank over the core in Invasion during the last minute the debris will stop anyone, Elites or Spartans, from touching it and thus force a specific outcome.

Ghost and Warthog are worthless. How can you justify the warthog Bungie? It's the signature vehicle. Lazer is beastly as always.
Vehicles are basically deathtraps now-Lame

Invasion didn't do it for me.
