Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Yeah. It's like spawning with eight more grenades and a large-area remote detonation EMP machine. What's not to love?

Except for the jaggies, it actually looks better ingame for me. Everything is so more vibrant and sharp, and then when I press the Photo button and it cleans it up and becomes all washed out and pops less.
Screenshots really lose a lot of the color contrast for some reason. They're not as rich.

Speaking of screenshots...I was planning on doing a lot of picture stories during the Beta, but I'm just not having any moments that warrant then. And I'm not sure why. Lots of spectacular looking moments, but a picture or two do for that. But I haven't had one of those "this crazy thing happened and I barely survived and then did THIS and then..." which is what I spent so much time documenting in Halo 3.

I'm still not sure why yet. I think it's because close encounters end so fast thanks to the grenades, and the health system means I survive encounters less often. But there just haven't been that many memorable moments in the games I've played, and that stands at sharp contrast to Halo 3.

Then what is your guess for how they will explain that sprinting is an AA?
There's really no explanation needed, dude. It's a gameplay tweak. Why would I explain how ODSTs can beat down Brutes in Halo 3: ODST?

Yeah I noted on this before, Halo Reach seems more 'strict' as in everything seems to have a very defined set of rules, its hard to explain, but it seems less flexible.

That didnt make any sense at all did it =/

Anyone noticing the graphical anomaly that occurs when you strafe left, right, left, right on a wall with a straight vertical line. The vertical line gets distorted and bends. I have never seen anything like this in any other game. Looks almost like an optical illusion. Try it. I hope they fix this before release!

You mean the ghosting? It is already fixed.

I believe that's by design. The view warps on your periphery.

I found this great video of a game of Invasion on YouTube yesterday. The player provides commentary, and it is hilarious.

pro pipe should be along the rockets and splazers on walls instead of a spawning weapon, or if they at least look at removing the emp from the explosions it would be a little better to spawn with, right now it's a vehicle stopping beast.

The pro pipe is anything but overpowered.

This is rich coming from someone that spawn camps with the weapon trying to get easy one hit kills from the spawning team and uses it exclusively to wreck any opposing vehicles during Invasion.

It shouldn't be in a Loadout in Invasion, it ruins the delicate balance of infantry/vehicle interactions, especially considering the abundance of Rockets, Lasers, Grenades, and other vehicles. Like Ghaleon said, it's like spawning with a bunch of extra grenades, except they are guaranteed one hit kills on infantry and have extra EMP effect when needed for vehicles. No other spawning weapon has such a huge, disproportionate impact on the game - and doubly so because only one team can choose that Weapon/Loadout.

It would be better placed alongside the Laser/Rockets/Sniper as a power weapon because it clearly acts like one when used during a game.

Chill, man. Pro Pipe is cool.

Agreed. I'd also like to see the Spartan's power weapons in Phase 3 be spread out more. It's already hard enough for the Elites to get to the Phase, let alone ever score due to camping/power weapons being fired off all at once if you even step inside the room.

And yes, me being bitter about never being able to ever get any power weapons most of the time plays into this. :|

What's odd is that on Powerhouse, it's clearly treated like a power weapon, along side the focus rifle, hammer and rockets. But when vehicles enter the mix - the scenario when the weapon is most valuable - everyone on the team can wield it at will from spawn.

I think I remember one of the podcasts mentioning that the idea behind the grenade launcher was to make a dialed-down explosives based weapon that could be used in a load out since it's not dominating, but I don't think the weapon as designed fits the bill.

Mind you, I love the gun. Great feedback, a nice learning curve to it, lots of interesting scenarios it can be employed in and the secondary fire is cool. But with so many on the map when it's part of a load out, it really does skew the game sharply when they show up.

The Pro Pipe is cool. However, six Pro Pipes raining explosive EMPs down when you hop into a vehicle or try to move the Core...is not cool. And that's his point. He's not critiquing the gun, but its implementation. Your precious is not the real subject here.

Weapons I'd rather not appear in a load out:

Shotgun
Sword
Grenade launcher

Hey, Bungie, see these conveyor belts?

It would be sweet if they moved :)

I don't think it's unfair to suggest that the availability of weapons and Loadouts in Invasion is at the very least a little skewy. But without more hands-on time in the vehicles, and a better sense of the dynamic Bungie are shooting for, I don't really want to pass judgement.

The Grenadier Loadout is definitely an issue, though. As someone who never really liked vehicles or the vehicular gameplay (outside of the Chopper, which I believe was overpowered but loved to use), it's still disheartening to see them being abused with so much success and used with so little (with the exception of the Scorpion, but even that dies in seconds if someone grabs the Camo/three plasma grenades Loadout on the Elite side).

But hey, this is the company that gave us a surfeit of Heavies in Halo 3.

I gave up playing the beta 2 days after it started. It did nothing for me, those two maps, specially swordbase were shit (IMO). Yesterday my friend asks me to get on to play and we played some invasion...SHIIIIIITE!!! Fucking loved it, I think that is what halo needed, I was burned out on it after H3. But this new mode feels nothing like halo to me and it plays great. Invasion slayer is great too.

Okay cool. And for the record, I agree with ya'll.

I wonder if the full game has pro-pipe spree medals

Jesus - start an Arena game and one guy on the opposite team quits right before it starts, then another 2 quit - similar names, probably all in a party together. Felt bad for the one dude left who quit after 4 deaths, but now I and the others on my team have a low rating solely for the fact that we couldn't play a full game against a full team. Does that get weighted any differently to a normal match rating?

The match - http://www.bungie.net/stats/reach/gamestats.aspx?gameid=8242544&player=Starlit

As an aside I'm not liking the way its matching me with people who have barely played any games, makes me think I'll be in a low division when I finally get ranked

I think the pro pipe is awesome. Don't want anyone to get the wrong idea from me. But you were popping people left in right in your videos. It's very much like a power weapon. If treated as such, i'm cool with it.

Kapura said:
This is clearly a power weapon in the right hands. Takes slightly less skill than a sniper, and it has an EMP.

And I just noticed that the Layout is Grenade Launcher+Assault Rifle. It's like it was made specifically for Dax!

EDIT:

Well, if they moved fast enough, and with Sprint, you could make yourself a human bullet.

Thagomizer said:
Wait, what? It's much harder to use than a sniper.
This. The pro pipe is not OP imo. However it probably shold not be a loadout. The speed and trajectory of the projectile it fires are really hard to judge. If the enemy is close enough it can be hard to hit them dead on or even time the emp. I run out of ammo quickly and it often takes 2 hits to kill some enemies.

Jesus - I swear I've ticked the "stupid fucking teammates" option the last few days in Arena - when I have the sword and there's a guy coming up the lift - don't throw a grenade at him so I'm weakened and he kills me then attempt to melee a guy in Armour Lock.

3 games today - one which I wouldn't count as it was 4v1 and I get 1373 - yeah not going in with gaffers is a huge mistake.

I didn't mean to start a big debate. I was halfway joking when I said the pro-pipe is OP. I'm so screwed. I've got finals next week, and it looks like tornado outbreak tomorrow from OKC to Kansas City, MO. Won't have much time to play Reach.

Dude what are you talking about? That's how I roll! :lol

I know its not hard but I went + 20 on invasion last night. It was pretty amazing. I also happened to take someone out with the sword in midair. We both were flying with jetpacks.

Oh no, let me take than honour! I was in a tank and got lasered by my own 'battle-bro', how does that happen? Then the next game with a different 'battle-bro', I had a laser, and he somehow runs me over! :lol

I think its connection based? If your host its suddently a lot more dangerous?
I'm hardly ever host, and my connection has been weird lately with Reach, so it's not that.

The music simply got me pumped.

Half the weapon pickups on Powerhouse are powerweapons.

I had a game on it where all of my teammates quit and I was left alone against a guy with hammer, one with focus rifle, one with grenade launcher and one with rockets. Fun times.

Dechaios said:
Pointless? Well one thing it would change is the fact that people use that tower for sniping constantly.

Where else would you prefer people snipe from? Towers are practically made for sniping.

It would be pointless to make them working belts because really no one would even bother going there, you would be in constant motion and easy to spot by anyone.

For as bad as I play the majority of the time, I'm surprised that you haven't taken me off of your friend's list :lol Bungie needs to extend the beta for one extra week. Someone make it happen! And don't nerf jetpacks!

:lol No, you're a good team mate. I don't think you play badly either. A few negative games isn't a big deal. We definitely gotta play some invasion together. And a few extra days would be nice.

There is plenty of high ground to snipe from on that map. I don't know. Every time a good sniper is up there he absolutely dominates... Maybe it's fair the way it is but it just annoys me.
