Halo: Reach Beta Thread

just think of it as for the greater good. we're givin up beta time for a better product (hopefully) come fall :)

I know, I know.

so, I hope this isn't too embarrassingly noob'ish, but how do the weapon re-spawns work in this game?

I was pleasantly surprised to the changes they made, especially taking out the DMR in Invasion. I have yet to play SvE Slayer.

Oh, can't wait to try out Generator Defense tomorrow.

it changes everything. I think for the better.

high five!

Well it doesn't make retarded players not suck :lol I wish Bungie could hire Shaggy and Violent J to put some magic into Reach to make everyone play well. Man, that would be a miracle.

Vehicle Balance:

Let me start by telling a quick story. One time, on a game of Invasion on Boneyard, my Banshee took enough damage for flames to begin pouring out of it. I instantly knew my ride was about to explode. The thought of ‘Oh crap, I need to bail!’ ran through my mind. I exited my vehicle, only to see it continue on without me. After only a second the sky was lit with a huge explosion. I on the other hand was lucky enough to have landed on the roof of the base. With my ride busted, I continued on with my mission, happy to still be alive!

The above story is a rarity. All too often a player will be in a vehicle, only to be blindsided by one of many possible scenarios. The player or players normally die quickly and without any real chance of saving themselves. Skilled players and novices alike are both subject to this death trap. I suggest that all players be given a shot of redemption after their vehicle takes maximum damage. How can this be done? Simply give every vehicle a 2-3 second window of opportunity for the occupants to bail out. Imagine you’re in a Banshee. You’re hit by a Scorpion tanks shell. Your Banshee has taken maximum damage, but you don’t blow up automatically! Instead it starts flaming and beeping. You know it’s time to bail. So you do. At this point, it really depends on where you are in the map. Did you bail at maximum height? Do you have Jetpack? Can you survive the fall? Whether or not you survive now has more to do with skill than anything else. If you were good enough, you could have gotten to a safer height before making the plunge, perhaps you maneuvered yourself over a roof, or maybe you do have a jetpack and everything’s going to be ok. So what now? You lost your Banshee and you’re still alive. You’re down, but not out! You have a shot at redemption. You’re not stuck spawning. What about the guy who clipped your wings? Did he fail? No, he took you out of the sky, and he’s still in a tank, while you’re stuck with your own two legs. He should get a Medal though, right? Yeah, he should get the Vehicle Destroyed Medal. (Which already exists, believe it or not.) When he gets the Medal he knows he’s succeeded. He can safely tell his teammates ‘Banshees down.’ Both players can feel a sense of satisfaction, and I believe this would add more tension to the game.

I also think vehicle play could benefit from the Scorpion and Wraith being about to take two hits. Example: 1 rocket and 1 tank mortar. Or 1 laser and 1 fuel rod. Or any combination. Shooting the Wraith once with the scorpion and destroying it isn’t the way to go. (IMO) Tank battles are more fun when drawn out.

This is all my own personal opinion of course. If you’re reading this and think this is the worst idea ever, you can be happy to know I don’t work for Bungie. I’ve been thinking about the vehicle play in Reach a lot lately and I just wanted to give my opinion. If anyone likes the idea, please let me know. If a Bungie employee likes it that would be awesome. Right now it sounds good in my head. Maybe in practice it’s a horrible idea. Maybe Bungie already tried it and it sucked. I can’t say for sure. I just wanted to get my thoughts out. Thanks for reading.

I...I love this post. I want to have sex with every delicious word.

Hey Bungie, I am only capable of putting 8 magnum bullets into the face of my opponent.

Thats how many bullets are in the clip.

So if you could somehow REWARD me for putting all 8 shots into the face of my opponent, rather than letting them waltz through and double melee me, Id REALLY appreciate.

Thanks! :D

I still think it's hilarious that one DMR user can kill a Banshee in like 2 clips, might even be less than that if all shots land.

And go figure, if i recall correctly, the reason my Banshee started to flame was because of a DMR!

Re: vehicle gameplay:

I asked via twitter: "@Josh_Hamrick Will vehicle health be more obvious when Reach comes out in stores?"

From Josh Hamrick's twitter: "@KapuraIII We're gonna do something..."

So I'm sure they know that the vehicle ambiguity is a problem.

Got to try out CvE Slayer on Sword Base. Doing so resulted in my first Overkill of the Beta, and my first Extermination ever, between Halo 3 and Reach. Those tasty, tasty humans. :D

I enjoyed it so much I rendered it twice, since I'm not likely to replicate the feat any time soon. :lol

Successful test. Probably gave them a flashback to Halo 1, when a sword-toting Elite instilled unbridled fear in the heart.

We get it, you suck! Shut up already.
If you have a legitimate complaint then by all means complain but if you are going to bitch (incessantly, I might add) because you are a deficient player then just keep it to yourself.

getting in and out of vehicles is a major hassle now, I never know where I am. It also takes a lifetime to get out of a vehicle.

Sometimes, it can feel like a lifetime. Probably because you know you're about to die if you don't bail.

I've played that game type a few times already and I'm always placed on the Blue team - Spartans every time. Never won a single match against those squid faces. :lol

Nah, I think I'll continue to complain when shots that are lined up and timed appropriately are determined as misses, while those that are not are randomly assigned as hits, just because the magic gods of the reticule bloom deemed it so.

Likewise, I think Ill continue to complain about a melee system that at once discourages players from actually engaging in CQC by allowing a tiny sliver of shields to nullify the entire attack, yet rewards those who do engage for mashing the B button as fast as possible. Terrible.

But by all means, feel free to continue bitching about my bitching. It creates a wonderful little feedback loop. :lol

poor, poor humans - never had a chance

Here's the link i mentioned. The guys we were playing with were Kete and InsaneFREAKBOY from The Running Riot.

Go watch it in theater. You might be amazed by the difference between what you thought happened and the reality.
I imagine the first things you'll think are "Holy shit, I actually aim like that?" and "What the hell is with my timing?"
When your heart is pounding and your mind is racing because you've been left without your trusty spray and pray device and actually have to aim, what you 'feel' you're doing and what actually happens can be drastically different.

What I know is: when I've fired off a full clip and not managed to put the guy down it's because I missed some shots, I missed some shots.
Unless you have the world's worst connection proxied through 85 different countries or the game is singling you out because of some unexplainable deep hatred then it's because you missed. Any which way, it's not the game's fault.

Reading through the glorious OP I noticed the Generator Defense mode is actually for network testing opposed to being a full fledged gametype, although it could end up being an actual mode. What exactly are they testing in the Generator Defense mode that they weren't previously testing in all the other modes? This is just for my own curiousity, if anyone wants to know.

Why does the Arena insist on putting me up against teams of 4 when I'm by myself? That, plus a crazy amount of quitters=turning game off in disgust.

The spawns in this game are garbage too, Halo 3's weren't perfect, and I complained plenty, but the amount of times I've spawned into grenades, or shot immediately upon spawning is pretty ridiculous. There also doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to where people spawn, you'll be fighting 3 dudes on the other team across the map, and then all of a sudden there's a guy behind you.

Respawn timers need to be upped to 10 as well, I killed 2 guys tonight on Swordbase at top yellow lift, and by the time their 3rd teammate got there to help they were already spawned and going up the lift again to gangbang me. :lol

How do you know you're playing a team of four? Do you see all four bars fill up at once? Is that why you suspect you're playing a team of four? It always says 'opponent' so it's impossible to tell if they joined up together. It's been my experience that reach will match you up with your teammates first, then find four more people, that could be a group of randoms or a team of four.

Well see, after the game is over, all you have to do is go their names and it will tell you who all is in their party. Plus 4 guys having the same abbreviation in their tag is kind of a giveaway as well.

Consider yourself educated.

My theory is they're testing Firefight. Semi-informed speculation here.

I got the impression that you've been matched up with teams of four consistently. Four guys having matching tags is pretty rare. I had no idea you could see if they we're a party at the end.

My matchmaking is saying "Load Error" and isn't letting me play. If this is means I'm banned and it's because my friend and I quit earlier when his controller kept disconnecting (FFA match) and something like this is in play in the final game, then fuck Reach.

EDIT: Holy shit :lol My Live just expired. Crisis averted. Thought the game actually banned me for something like that.

*ashamedly rescinded*

Oh, and one more complaint before I head out, cause I know Bagel loves it so. The assist counting system in this game is garbage. I get points for 'assisting' on enemies that I shot once to negligible effect (5 minutes after the fact), but no assist for dropping the shields of others.

Just checked the theater. Yep. The game is shit. Im looking at kill shots that are hitting the wall beside enemies, Im seeing missed shots when the guy's head took up 90% of the reticule (and it was centered).

Just absolute trash of the highest order.

It's a known bug in the Beta that's already fixed for ship. In the Beta, the assist system checks for health damage; a contribution of 40% before it's refilled is an assist. The shipping game is based on total damage, including shield. Aka, normal.

I really like the armor customization but why not let me color each of the pieces of armor?

Then another thing is how about a medic class/loadout whatever? Don't know how it would work but I'd love to see them try.

I'm hoping there's a decent amount of armor available from the get-go. I wouldn't mind having to unlock most through a campaign trial or having to defeat it on Legendary, but MP based armor buy-outs are not my thing, unless they're simplistic things like "Get to Warrant Officer", not "Get jacked by a player, and subsequently board him" type of thing. Hated that for Halo 3.

I thin it will just be like the Beta, and be credit/ranked based. You need enough credits and a high enough rank to unlock armor. I hope they have hundreds and also allow for different leg permutations. That would be neat.

It's not a class based game. You have different armor abilities but each person is essentially the same with the same amount of life and abilities (outside of AA.)
