I'd honestly prefer that to health packs in MP but I still prefer it when I'm not disadvantaged for having already fought someone a while back.

Whether an enemies' health bar is full or has a centimeter left (after shields), one shot to the head with the DMR, Needle Rifle, Carbine (?), Sniper and Magnum will kill him, period. I don't think Bungie will stray away from this formula we've been acustomed to.

I guess this "disadvantage" would only apply if I had, say, less than half of my health bar left and someone wielding a non-headshot weapon like the AR held down the trigger even after my shields were gone. They'd finish me off pretty quickly considering the amount of actual health I had left, but I think players such as you and I wouldn't do something like that. We'd aim for the head which would pretty much bypass this "disadvantage".

Hope I'm making sense. :p

It also increases the importance of team teamwork and team shooting. Yeah, you get their shields down, let them slip away and either fail to notify your team that they're one-shot or you team isn't set up to cover their get-away then they deserve to walk away. Now I wouldn't mind it if they made the recharge time longer ala-MLG settings but having a permanent effect means it's not a big deal if you don't finish the kill. With health, if the guy gets away you don't have to worry about it as much because they've been reduced to a fucking cripple.
Slight exaggeration

I get what you're saying but you even realized what the outcome would be. The headshot weapons' strengths have always been their ability to bypass the health bar. That mechanic makes up for the fact that they're relatively weak against shields. Neutering the health bar only increases the efficiency of weapons that don't require the precise aiming and work against the key strength of the headshot weapons. Maybe they'll take this into effect and buff the headshot weapon's shield damage but that'd have pretty crazy consequences as well. I'd love to say I trust them wholeheartedly but 2 years of shoving the AR into my hands will make a man's faith rocky.

That's a funny ass picture.

We tried to get a HaloGAF montage going last year. Shit fell through immediately lol. I've got clips in my fileshare for whoever wants to take them for the montage. They're rendered already for the most part as well for easy preview.

Shishka doesn't look terrified, he looks hungry lol. He can't wait to try that shit out for himself. I bet he's beast at Reach.

The Halo 3 health system is actually not as simple as when your shield's come back you are 100% well. Taken from an old weekly update:

Bungie said:
There is one more wrinkle to this: your invisible body hit points do recharge, but at a different rate from your shields. While ordinarily this is a non-issue (we’ve always made this largely transparent), it can affect the outcome of a contest. For those of you keeping score, body hit points start regenerating 10 seconds after last taking damage, at a rate of 9 hp/sec. So if your shields are up but you’re fresh from taking a beating, you could still be in trouble in a contest.

Since you have 45 Health points if you are almost killed (ie say almost all your damage from your base health so 45 points) your base health will take 10 + 45/9 = 15 seconds to fully heal from last instance of damage. Your shields provide 70 points of damage so it is entirely possible for a player to have well below the full 115 points even if the shields are fully recharged.

Ideally, for me anyway, Reach would emulate this system but the health bar would be a visual indication of the base health in Halo 3 which does not have a visual representation on the screen but does exist.

Simply put, the current system does indeed punish players for eating in to their base health but it's not something that is immediately clear.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. The BR can kill 3 people with one clip, granted all bullets from each burst hit the target.

If we're assuming the DMR is a direct replacement of the BR, since the DMR has a 12 round clip, 4 single-shot bullets will kill an enemy which would still be in line with the BR's 3 kills per clip. I love that so much, to say the least.

Some casual-to-average players may worry about the idea of 4 bullets killing someone, but they need to take into account the fact that the faster I'm pushing the trigger, the less accurate my DMR will become (as indicated by the reticule's expansion) which will force me to lower my rate of fire.

In the end it'll all work out. We need to remember that the BOSS, Sage, is in charge of the entire sandbox for Halo: Reach. And what he's done with all the weapons so far has made me :Dface.

Headshots don't really bypass the shields anyway though. They just deal infinite damage on an unshielded opponent. As long as the health bar isn't ridiculously small it should be fine in Reach. I agree though that making health packs a mechanic of multiplayer would diminish the value of headshot weapons at least partially.

In the end I think they will have it be a tweakable setting like so many things were in 3 and allow for health packs to be turned on/off in multiplayer and be a feature on the map that can be edited in using Forge or some variant of it.

That was something I put together in less than a half 'n' hour. If I took my time, I could make a lot better.

And, re: player Health in Reach. If Eazy's complainin' about it, I'll probably like it. Go Bungie!

In some ways he kinda pwnd bungie. Bungie still hasnt announced a ton of the stuff that Tom Morello revealed. Wont be much of a suprize anymore... but it wont stop the hype train.

This game has eaten up all my hype, it ate up my ME2 hype, i just preordered BC2 and im not excited for it, it took away my Splinter cell hype... My Red Dead Redemption hype and Alan Wake Hype is still lingering though lol but im sure the Beta will eat up my Alan Wake hype.

Regarding the GAF montage: I'm not working right now, so I have a shitload of spare time on my hands. I'm more than willing to capture a ton of clips and stuff. Ive made my own last hurrah Montage for Halo 3, so I could do one for GAF with no trouble. If anyone else wants dibs on it, go for it, but if not, PM me a link to a few of your favourite clips or send the files over LIVE (to BladedExpert) and I'll see whats up.

It's time someone took this idea by the scruff of the neck :lol

Not necessarily. I guess it would be nice if they were, but lots of people haven't had that many chances to play in Customs.

Came back from Internetless land, saw the vidoc, wow DMR :D

Also finally managed to go to my first competitive H3 LAN, as a coach, really great time. I even got to do some FFA and 2v2s on Halo 1 for nine hours straight during the midtourney break with/against the best French Halo 1 player, the guy's done some MLG competitions and Ogre 2's a fan of his :lol

I really hope Bungie brings back the skillgap that was missing in H2/H3 (healthpacks, fall damage, requiring people to aim, etc etc). The guy 25-0 anyone (and we're talking French Top 16 as well as guys from Dutch team H2k) who wanted to 1v1 him all weekend. I don't know anyone who can do that in H2 or H3..

Have I missed anything? I've only seen the vidoc and that twitpic that was just posted.

Well then.

So yesterday morning I mentioned wanting to play Halo. I said I just had to put together my new TV stand and then I would play.

Well I was NOT expecting the TV stand to take as long as it did... I finally finished late last night, but now it is done and ready to be gamed on!

So I am hopping on to do some MM right now, if anyone cares to join.

At x10 a number of small details came out, but nothing else big so far. Here's a summary of MP details I found and posted at another forum,

Data point 1) Halo reach's Multiplayer will be a big risk for bungie.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/interview-marcus-lehto-on-halo-reach-firefight-and-ending-at/

Halo is a huge multiplayer phenomenon, but you guys also have to be keeping up with what everyone else is doing out there. Are you going to basically stick to what has really worked and not mess with it too much on the multiplayer side?

I think it's fair to say that we're taking some pretty big risks on Reach.

Really?

While we'll still have all of the good stuff that players have come to know and love about Halo, we've made that better and given them new features on top of that. We are really doing some other things. New gameplay features to multiplayer that... Well, yeah. Right now waiting for the beta, coming up on [May 3] to see what the fan's reaction is to some of this is.

Datapoint 2: all of Reaches MP Maps will see dual use with campaign spaces.

Some articles online mentioned this, and it was confirmed int that classic bungie way in the most recent weekly update.

http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=24791

Also on display at X10, though the flythrough happened in private behind closed doors, was the multiplayer map, Powerhouse. We’ve seen some people freaking out a little bit about media coverage that made mention of Marcus calling Powerhouse out as a multipurpose space found both in Reach’s campaign and multiplayer. That’s totally true. Why would you even question Marcus? Ever? He’s the boss of Reach.

But, as always, there’s much more to this story. Not only is the team’s approach to building out our multiplayer and campaign spaces different this time around in a number of ways, there’s also some monumental stuff looming in Reach’s multiplayer world that’ll flip the script if all goes to plan. Sounds all kinds of mysteriously ambitious, doesn’t it? It is.

Data point 3: Elites are returning to MP and will be different from spartans this time around.

In the 4 guys 1up podcast Bungie mentions this. When asked about elites they inform us that yes, elites are taller, and playing with the differences between elites and spartans for single and multiplayer.

Data point 4: Reach won't feature class based play

Gamespot interview, at 1:30 http://www.gamespot.com/events/microsoftx10/video.html?sid=6250822

Data point 5: totally mum on firefight

The Firefight mode in ODST...

Was awesome?

Is that going to be a component of Halo: Reach?

Can't confirm, nor deny that one! I can say that we do take pretty great pride in what we did with Firefight and, well, we've never been known to leave great features behind.

Data point 6, Reach will still feature smaller symetrical maps
Sketch answers this about as forcefully as he can. in this interview.

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14276699/halo-project/videos/haloreach_inv_x10_021210.html

Data point 7: Reach will feature more players per match than any other Halo

http://kotaku.com/5474603/bungie-ex...-of-an-odst-or-a-halo-3-game?skyline=true&s=i

And while it sounds like the number of people who can play in a single multiplayer map will be going up, it won't be a big increase.

"Don't expect an exponential leap in the number playing in a multiplayer match," Jarrard said.

Ohh my.

I'm saying Halo goes up to 10 vs. 10 max game size.

Data Point 7: Dual wielding is out

See: Four guys 1up podcast around the 25 minute mark.

The full time playlists will probably be paired down. We're still deciding what can go and what can stay. It makes sense from a population perspective to cull Throwback, but it's worth considering leaving it in just so Halo 3 has that all-objective playlist unto infinity. Even if people won't play it they can't say it's not there.

Double EXP weekends are trickier. Right now we manually add a month's worth of double exp hoppers with our updates. We're considering automating that process and picking 4-5 of the most popular weekends to show up in a cycle. So, off hand, that'd probably be Grifball, Mythic Brawl, Rocket Race, and a couple others.

That's not for a while, though. Starting probably in March, I'm going to start polls on Bungie.net so people can vote for the following months Double EXP weekends.

Thanks for the response, and I like the idea of the polls but I doubt the more obscure playlists would ever come into play if that happened (maybe thats not a bad thing but I REALLY want some Fiesta :lol ).

I agree with Throwback, I love it but can never get a game, if anything replacing it with a team based action sack esque playlist with a mixed bag of Objective, custom made maps, and even more obscure/ wacky game types could allow for that nice blend of a objective based playlist with more funky gametypes to keep people playing?

Scratch that, wacky Objective doesn’t sound like a good idea :lol

Well, I'll have to do something to make sure people can't vote for the same gametype every month (Grifball, Griffball, Grifball!), so it might be that I do 4-5 polls on the first day of the month, one for each weekend, with the caveat that if a particular weekend wins the vote in one poll, it becomes disqualified in the following polls. So, if a weekend wins two polls, I go with the second place winner in one of them. Or something. The plan's a work in progress. ;)

We've already got wacky objectives in Action Sack, which is doing quite well. Just to remind you, Action Sack is social, and not worth any EXP specifically to encourage people to play for fun rather than reward. I'm not convinced a ranked Action Sack would be an appropriate replacement to Throwback. It'd be more likely that if we had to pull Throwback we'd integrate its gametypes into Skirmish at an even weighting with what's already there, and people looking for ranked team objective gametypes would have to turn either to Squad or MLG.

I've been playing a mix of Mythic and Throwback and I have no problem getting games. Halo 3's cheeseburger is still perfectly moist and delicious, please don't get rid of throwback. 9/10 times you get a game like CTF BR's Pit Stop and it reminds me why I still play Halo.

@Devin, wow man, you still have the H3 Beta saved on your Hard Drive? And it's not corrupted? Or was that just a "stock" photo?

I can remember the slow eternity it seemed like when downloading the H3 Beta. That was a huge day of ups and downs. First thinking I had got banned because I got a message from the Disembodied Soul. Then realizing it was the F&F. Then having to wait until I got off work to go download it. Then waiting for the actual download to finish was probably the worst. And then my first glorious game on Valhalla where I just went off the man-cannons for about 3 minutes straight. I'd like to apologize again to my teammates that game for making them go 3v4 in Team Slayer on Valhalla.

Leaves the door open for maybe some sort of adversarial mode. Could be straight up Covies vs. UNSC, or maybe a more L4D-like Covies + Firefight vs UNSC. The possibilities leave my scrote-a-tingling.

Yeah I didn’t quite mean something as wacky as Action Sack, just something as varied as it, but honestly my idea is pretty poor :lol

On a personal note I hate having to turn to Squad Battle or MLG when trying to get my fix of Objective or BR based Halo simply because Squad Battle has a entirely different dynamic than what im looking for. I also dislike the stripped down MLG gameplay (No Radar :(). I don’t know if that’s true for anyone else but Squad and MLG are pretty different experiences to Throwback (or ‘normal’ Halo) in my opinion.

That being said I have no idea of any real alternative to what your planning, which sucks because ranked objective is awesome. On a more positive note im liking whats being planned with the Double exp's.

Squidhands are you talking about Devin Olsen playing the beta?, It seems like he just wants to play it but if you know something that I dont I would love to get in :lol

Agreed!

I dont get games in Throwback oddly though, maybe it depends what level you are? (Im only like a 15 so not sure if that would be the problem). I also hate trying to get my Objective fix in Skirmish because generally it turns into slayer, or you play a bunch of people who just end up quitting out or whatever. I also hate it when its 5v5

The plan's a work in progress. ;).
Please bring back some more map-oriented voting. I know it wasn't a double-exp weekend, but the 7 on the 7th, Avalanche only hopper was pure bliss for me.

wait wait wait.

That was just a picture of the Halo THREE beta screen.

I don't see why you would be jealous of that? I hope you didn't think that was the Reach Beta UI. I wish :(
lol, that's what I get for working and browsing. I thought it was for Reach. :lol

Make Social Slayer and Social Skirmish 4v4. I know for a fact that SS would improve, and a more focused social objective playlist would be much appreciated.

I can see that by the clips you sent me :lol
:lol Guilty. It's my all-time favorite map, and I hardly ever get to play it, cause there's no DLC required hopper for it, and if even ONE jackass in SBT doesn't have it, we don't get it. :(

Definitely. I haven't played on Avalanche since the DLC requirements were lifted as far as I can remember. What would be ideal for me would be a 6v6 Social DLC required list with Slayer, Flag and Bomb gametypes. Pretty much like Squad battle but with the hope that I could actually find games there.

It sucks because maps like Longshore and Avalanche are just so rare to come across in the wild since they work better with bigger teams but that increases the chance of someone no having them.

Maption Sack should be a permanent social list...

Throwback's failure was disheartening, it's a shame that 80% or more of the Halo population only care about slayer, such a boring gametype. I wish (know it won't happen) that all playlists in Reach would be a mixture of slayer and objective, I really think it's the only way you could have an objective list succeed. :(

Just to take the convo back to health and skill. I am in full agreement that having a health pack increases the skill gap. I am perfectly happy with this.

Having health forces a player to make DECISIONS about how to approach a combat scenario. A low health player will use different tactics than a full health player and this adds more variety to multiplayer. Team shooting can now be even more effective. If you know that there is a player with low health, a few focused Ar's can now be really deadly.

Halogaf- I get the whole Br's after Veto thing; but does this work in the opposite way? For example, if it's Team BR on Midship, then a veto passed, does it automatically go to AR or normal starts? Not nocking the system, spraying the AR is still good times, just curious.
