To support this stance, I wanna link to this video from Far Cry Instincts. This was a port of a 2004 PC title to the original Xbox. Keeping that in mind, look at how good the water looks! I just find it weird that most console games skimp out on real water reflections and in Bungie's case push for what's probably just as taxing with their water physics.

Also note how this 2005 port managed to pull off a decent level editor, and that was Ubisoft's first go at it. Bungie gets a pass for 3's Forge, but there's absolutely no excuse for no having something exponentially better in Reach.

Wow, that map editor is really nice for an Xbox game. Having something like that in Reach would be so nice. I could imagine MS being against for the sake of charging for new maps.

Not only would a map editor never be a true replacement for new maps made by Bungie; Microsoft could also monetize different palettes to use in the editor.

Bungie you gotta have a real editor in Reach.

Holy shit.

That map editor is absolutely incredible... Even by today's standards, I cannot believe it was made for the original xbox.

If Reach has anything close to this I would be blown away... Have they mentioned anything at all about the state of 'Forge' in any updates? I haven't seen anything yet, but perhaps I missed it.

Can't pimp Far Cry 2's editor too much. And to also tie it in to the water discussion:
Here's sorta what Valhalla would look like with water reflections.

Looks a whole lot better on the TV and not recorded off-screen but you can sorta get a feel for it. Jumping ahead to 7:20 shows you a bit more of the realtime reflections.

God watching that video makes me wanna dive back into the editor. If only Bungie could implement such a thing into a game with a fun MP component and healthy online community.

This is a better video, but it's not as good as Halo 3's water (Valhalla!).

I spent sooo much time in that editor :lol Still haven't gone around to playing more than thirty minutes of FC2 yet, haven't even touched the MP. Forza and Pokémon are taking all my gaming time :lol

Far Cry. Man I used to play that so much. Never once played the campaign and never went online (if it had any). It was all about the map making and crazy silly local games. Geomerging wasn't someting that required a lot of effort to do, neither was placing floating objects. I have high hopes for Reach's map editor albeit Forge or some new reincarnation.

I said "holy shit" several times. That's fuckin amazing.

The dunia engine is pretty amazing alright. I'd love to see a halo(or some other sci fi) game built on it.

Far Cry 2's map editor is about the best map editor someone could hope for on consoles. It seems like a logical step up from forge but I doubt we're gonna be able to edit terrain. I'd say we'll see a more robust item (and possibly building) placement with the ability to change time of day and weather effects. I would also think that we will be able to use forged maps in firefight.

I would love to see an editor with as many features as the FC2 editor in Reach. Earlier today I went into FarCry to delete some of my maps and free up space on my 360 hard drive, and I ended up spending about an hour in the editor and only deleted a few maps. Some features of the FarCry editor are definitely not realistic from what I know about the game so far, but some more advanced editing stuff would be nice. Editing the weather and environmental factors seems like it may be a possibility if Reach does have forge or a map editing mode.

Edit:

Almost the exact same thing I said.

Yeah, editing terrain is a stretch for Reach, but I'd like to have more than just object placement. Weather would be a nice addition.

I want to see the animation of things getting soaked. Would be cool if textures actually darkened as they got wet, and then evaporated and dried out over a small period of time.

We doing GAF customs tonight?

Yep, Saturday is HaloGAF Customs night and tonight is no exception. Will be starting in about an hour or so, roughly.

There will be a lack of watersports, so set your expectations accordingly.

I think the two biggest improvements that they can add for editing is the ability to copy/paste already created sections (i.e., bases and such for symmetrical and non-symmetrical map purposes). The 2nd thing is to provide some ability to change the textures or at least the colors of objects. I'm really tired of the dull dirty brown color of blocks in sandbox. It made me want to spend more time in Foundry's map.

I too want to say how amazing I think the Far Cry map editor is, but I have no doubt in my mind that they spent the majority of the development time just making that based on the quality of the rest of the game :lol

All I want is forge to be a little more user friendly, simple things such as the ability to snap to objects and so forth will be fine by me.

About the forgehub match, im not too sure if I can make it, so its probably best to have someone ready just in case, ive spent the majority of today working on my final year dissertation and think that tomorow will be no different. Ill try and make it because 9:30 seems reasonable, but I may be rusty because apart from Blur I havent really played xbox for a while.

That's what I am wishing for. Sandbox is god ugly and Foundry, while not ugly, is just really small. Each map doesn't carry any character or personality, like they can with a true map editor.

Good games guys. I really liked that game on (correct me on the name here of necessary) Elevation. I don't think I had played on that map in a while.

Bladed, Hydranockz, and bobs99 we have our game today.
Here's the deal when I said the time last time(4:30 us eastern and 9:30 GMT) I forgot about day light savings, which went into effect today. So now 4:30 Eastern is 8:30 GMT. I'm not completely sure when the start time is now but I am in the process of figuring it out.

EDIT: Spoke to Roche and we will probably keep the 9:30 GMT time. I will be playing halo in about 2 hours if you want to join.

Got my nipper and nephew over at the moment, but they'll be off soon so no problems with the start time for me. I'll get on and have a few games beforehand too. If you see me on Halo 3 hit me up!

Well HaloGAF, I've decided that once Reach comes out, we are FINALLY going to get something like this to work: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=246322

It really is a shame that we've never been successful with something like this. I am hoping that HaloGAF has grown enough since then that we will finally have enough consistent people who would be interested in playing.

Btw, I can't believe how many Halo 3 threads are over in the Online part of the forum. I came across like 5 of them before I found the thread I was looking for. It's too bad that everything gets overlooked over there haha.

That explains the intense sessions of Ben 10 :p

I'll have had my dinner and will kick my family off the network in less than 2 hours so. I'll see ye online for some early games no less ;)

Hah, yep. If you check my games played you'll see it littered with terrible games for kids. Joys of parenthood....

See you guys online in a little while.

Sounds good, ill definatly be on a bit before the match, havent played Halo for a bit so will need a bit just to get used to it again, no worries though hopefully I should be "fragging like a pro" in no time.
How does Tsquared say that with a straight face :lol

How many times did we try to pull that off with Halo 2? Same story.. People say they will play and blah blah blah, but when the time comes, they all back off.

That is why I didnt even bother with the H3 one.

I dunno. I never tried to do any of the Halo 2 ones. That was like 4 years ago.

I think we have a lot more people on here now that play regularly. I am certain we could at LEAST get a 3v3 tournament with at least 4 teams. Teams would have a roster of 4 people (1 sub that could rotate in). Ideally I would like to have 6 teams though. Matches would be a best of 3 games: something like a CTF, KotH, and then a slayer as the tiebreaker if needed. If a tie happens during the CTF game (refer to the last time we tried this while doing 1 flag on High Ground) then the teams should replay that game. Would probably stray away from 1 flag so ties are less likely.

I would definitely be down for something like this.

And who knows if Reach does end up with a Clan feature we could use that to have HaloGAF clan matches... god dammit I miss Halo 2 Clan matches.
