Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

I was looking at the screenshots of the AR progression, and I just realized something that makes absolutely no sense. Why is the compass functional?! Admittedly, on Reach and Earth, it would make sense for why it worked, but how can it point North on places like the Halo rings, the Ark, and spaceships. How do those locations even HAVE a north?

Halo is ruined forever:lol

In the first halo for example, it pointed to the nearby gas giant, and that acted as some kind of improvised north so humans could coordinate. In other locations it's the same, as long as everyone's compass is pointing to the same designated north, it's all good.

If you're using the AR you're already ruining Halo for yourself.

Nope, he's correct. The "compass" is being oriented on a fixed position so active personnel can coordinate, even on worlds where North is nonexistent.

Wait, what? How can anyone come to this conclusion/know this? to be honest, i never thought about that even though I always noticed it aiming somewhere...

I would have just attributed the compass function to be pointing to an arbitrary "north" direction coded into the map files.

Edit: Wait, so does the point at which the compass points as "north" some static direction, or does it ever change throughout a level to indicate something specific, like objectives?

I remember putting 300% speed and running around trying to run into people. If you ran into them, you would splatter them :lol

If only they kept that in the full game. :(
Oh man, I recall hearing about that. Sounds amazing. :D

New Noble Actual post!

This week, we solved some big E3 plans that have been cooking for a while now. It wasn’t easy at all. I had some different ideas as to what I wanted to show, but our marketing folks did a great job of pulling me up off the ground – far enough away from the project that I could see what they thought would be the best thing for us to present. Damn, I can’t wait for you all to tune in for what we have to show.

Rest at the link.

I mentioned that in the original Halo 3 thread:

Okay, this has been irking me ever since the Beta.

During the Custom Games pandemic in the Halo 3 Public Beta, I made a gametype called "Bumper People".

Players started with Plasma Pistols, the player speed was increased to its maximum, and gravity was set a little lower than normal. We played on High Ground, and ran a "track" around the map. If the player rans into eachother, one person would die. The only thing that kind of wrecked the gametype was the fact that you had to have instant-kill on. So if anyone SHOT with the plasma pistol, they'd kill the person they shot in one hit.

In the FINAL game, is no starting weapon an option? I highly doubt it, but it'd be extremely helpful for games like mine, and other games(grenades/vehicles/whatever only, for example).

Also, from the looks of it, realtime visor reflections never made it in. That kind of makes me a little sad. But that's one of what, two things Bungie said would be in, but isn't? I'll live. :D

I was really sad to see that get fixed. :(

I was playing some Halo 3 on someone's couch the other day and a friend picked up a single spiker and scampered towards me firing it with all his might.

I was so surprised and amused I nearly forgot to destroy him.

:lol @ the one comment on it so far, I can't believe someone actually wants the spiker in Reach.

I don't think the spiker is a great weapon, but it's easily one of my favorite Halo weapon designs.

Spiker can easily take out someone at close range if they're caught off guard. Plus it's one of the best weapons to use against the Flood. Though that could just be in my head.

They took out the SMG because it's just a shitty AR. The Spiker is just a shitty SMG. :lol

If someone is within range of the SMG, wouldn't the SMG win over the AR
(assuming both players start shooting at the exact same time, and don't miss at all)
?

Omg, Eazy. Chopper in Reach confirmed!
:lol It must have been spending a few hours on that video this week but my heart skipped a beat when I came to that word only to quickly realize what he meant. And right below that in the comments, "I wouldn't mind if you showed of certain aspects of the Brute Sandbox, even indirectly, at E3."

I had no doubt in my mind that the kid was talking about the chopper. But the fucking spiker? :lol

And Shishka, either turn the party restrictions off for Throwback, make it a social dbl exp weekend, or give all of the Skirmish gametypes BR+AR starts. Even with 6k in the playlist we couldn't find a group of 4 20's. I hope to hell you won't turn around and say Team Throwback isn't popular when in fact it's still a huge hassle to find matches.

Read the newest NobleActual post. We already knew Reach was going to be at E3, and since Marcus didn't provide any details on what they're going to show at E3 in that post, there's nothing new to get more excited about (it's a given that all of us are excited for whatever is going to be shown of Reach during E3).

Good to hear the progression of the Beta is going so smoothly.

I wonder how Urk's going to tackle today's BWU since the Invasion reveal is going to come afterward. There's headhunter and stockpile, which should be interesting to read about again with Urk's unique style of writing.

In one sense I agree, but I feel that could be said about alot of the coverage.

<3 details of test. Been basing what I've learned in my Software Testing & Inspection module around Bungie, imagining (and using what we know from bits of info from Bungie & J.Evans etc) how the testing process goes at Bungie.

I'm seriously debating going dark once the beta wraps up. There was WAY too much shown from Halo 3's campaign in the Summer of 2007 before release. 3 of the first 4 levels were shown and written about. Not just small details either, but huge things like the scarab battle in The Storm. Hopefully any campaign footage shown will be only from the level that was shown in the initial screens and vidoc. We learned this week the scale of Reach and its a huge planet. I imagine we are going to be going to some crazy places and don't want them to be spoiled. I just don't know if I'm going to have the willpower to go dark!

I hate all Brute weapon design. It's like the opposite of Covenant design and really it's just downright uncreative. Ape-men with brutish, boxy and scrapped together weapons? Really?

Brutes should have been a unique enemy type much like the Hunters were, instead of a replacement to Elites >=[

I'm hoping that's what we'll see in Reach.

I'd love to get that "It's a Brute, oh shi-" feeling whenever a Brute appears

Thinking about this, they should be frikkin huge in Reach. The Elites are much bigger than the spartan models, and if I remeber correctly brutes are a similar height but obviously much broader. Hunters should be considerably bigger than both though. Hope they do have a rethink of the brute AI processes and make them distinct from the elites.

We only need the chieftains, that's all.

Like in firefight. When three of those bastards get dropped, it can get crazy xD

Awesome, can't wait for E3 this year. I hope Bungie has a MP demo set up there and I hope Soulja boy doesn't cut in front of me like last year :lol

Does GTTV get posted to the internet anywhere after it airs? I will have access to the internet tonight, but not a TV.

Usually they are posted on gametrailers.com after the west coast time slot is over. At times its been posted sooner but most of the time its after the west coast time slot (12:30 am). You can probably find a stream of the east coast time slot which will be at 12:30 am aswell but 3 hours earlier then the westcoast time slot and then watch it on the GT website in HD afterwards.... Its what im going to do, i hate having to wait 3 hours after half of the US has already seen it.

It goes up on Gametrailers a few hours after it airs. The footage/trailers are usually put up seperately too.

Kisssssss me through the phoneeeeeeeeee....:D

I'm really looking forward to the influx of beta-gameplay videos coming in the next few weeks. So far I have seen every video about Reach, including the MP trailer, and I still have no conception of how the game actually plays. It's going to be great to watch that initial video of first-person gameplay and see just how hard one can dong in Reach.

Sweet. I remember joining some random kid's Custom Game, and they were playing it on Snowbound. We were trying to race around the map, we were trying to splatter each other on purpose. :lol

But yeah, I was devastated when I found out I couldn't make the gametype in Halo 3. It was like one of the first gametypes I tried to make.

Damn, didn't get to play Invasion thanks to a player shortage :(

Embargo ends next week but I think you'll be happy when you'll see the Invasion stuff on GTTV.

I'll probably consider this as well, but I don't think I can resist until release. This is Bungie's last hurrah with Halo, so I want it to be as surprising and unexpected as possible.

I have tried with each halo since the first, and failed each time.

I just dont see myself avoiding this place, which is probably why I will be spoiled :(

Maybe a couple of weeks from release I will go totally dark, but until then im just going to have to be careful I guess.
