Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Wiki does it good.

The BR in Halo 2 IS hitscan, whilst Halo 3's BR is not. Halo 3's BR also has a wider spread when fired, each pull of the trigger fires a burst of three bullets that hit in slightly different locations in the direction you aimed.

Together with lag, non hitscan and the wider spread, a kill that should take four shots under perfect conditions can take a lot more.
Thanks for the explanation, Dani. I think I prefer hit scan. It should make for less frustrating encounters from distance.

Yep, especially since the DMR has one more level of zoom compared to the BR. Should make longer distance shots much more viable.

I also believe hitscan mitigates or hides the effects of latency and lag slightly better, as there should be less data variables being sent and received by players to the host particularly regarding weapon's fire.

This only applies to most of the human arsenal in Reach, not the Covenant weaponry though. I think by making this distinction, it gives each set of weapons a unique identifying feel - you'll still be leading your shots with most Covenant weaponry.

I was worried about the DMR being hitscan since it was announced as such.

It really takes alot of the skill out of using precision weapons.

Some might find having to lead targets and account for spread frustrating, but I think it just keeps players honest and makes them earn kills.

You shouldn't simply have to have the reticule over a moving target to GUARANTEE a hit, you should have to account for the distance and the speed of the moving enemy.

The spread of the bursts ensures the weapon is only effective at the range intended, and not beyond, while the BR in Halo 2 could basically go toe-to-toe with a sniper rifle across the map.

I'm not too sure about that. I was almost certain that hitscan would have a strong effect but my Halo 2 BRing wasn't any better than my Halo 3 shooting. If the effect was dramatic I should have seen a noticeable difference but overall it was about the same.

Of course, this is entirely anecdotal, there might very well be hard evidence saying otherwise but from my experience there's isn't much to it.

Are you basing this off your experience with an easy to use BR these past few days? Cause you know, Halo 2 has TONS of aim assist.

Part of me thinks that the change to hitscan for Reach is partly due to the inclusion of sprint and the overall speed of the Elites.

Here's a question. Was the decision to make the DMR hitscan based on Campaign or Multiplayer design?

I'm sure the token response would be a general "both" or something, but i think it would be interesting to find out that, for example, it might have been made as a response to the community feedback of Halo 3's BR.

Feck everyone. I'm in the middle of writing a piece for my website that happens to include a segment on hitscan and you guys are influencing my thinking. =P

Perhaps, although the general gameplay of Halo 1 and Halo 2 were faster than in Halo 3. Halo 2's vehicles, notably the Warthog, also have more speed. Either way, no matter the reasoning, I like it a lot more.

Nice. I think I got matched up with him once or twice in Halo 2 in the last 24 hours or so, in MM.

That is pretty interesting, and I don't think as a player that any of us can assume the answer to that question until we see some campaign. If the enemy AI is more animalistic and not as predictable in their movements then I can see why hitscan would be a want in the campaign. Still haven't seen any indepth campaign footage yet. :(

The Pistol has always been in Halo and Reach is no different in that regard. =)

Apparently it's been improved from Halo 2/3.
it looks like they took the power of the Halo 1 pistol and added the speed and in accuracy of the one from ODST.

For me, Halo3 feels a lot slower than Halo2, and especially Halo1. I hope Reach does not feel even slower than that.

Crazy overstatement. Less powerful than H1, less speed and acuracy than Halo ODST.

From what I have seen you can shoot that thing as fast as you want but at the cost of A LOT of accuracy. Also 4 shots and then 1 head shot seems like a pretty powerful gun at the speed it shoots.

Yeah, same stopping power as the DMR. Should be interesting how that dynamic plays out over different ranges.

Technically, the pistol has both been in every Halo game, but it's also been new in every Halo game. For the Reach beta thread, I have the new and returning weapons listed separately. I couldn't decide where to put the pistol for that reason. Settled on the new stuff, since functionally it's rebuilt.

You know what would be awesome, anyone remember how in the Halo 3 beta? Thanks to a glitch and a lot of effort we got custom games to work, would be sweet if there was another glitch like that again in the Reach Beta :lol

Rest assured there will be a veritable army of nerds trying to bend the beta to their will.

If Halo 2 is still going on, can somebody please play a match with my account? I will give you my login info. I really want that badge, I love Halo, and due to work reasons I couldn't play today and right now I can't get the game to work (turns out my disc is scratched, and no friend has a working copy). Can any of you guys please help me?

Fuck my job, of all fucking days...

I remember putting 300% speed and running around trying to run into people. If you ran into them, you would splatter them :lol

If only they kept that in the full game. :(

Yes! I remember that! I was actually friends with the guy that originally did the glitch and got into the first custom game :lol Still wish Bungie would have just put it as an option in the beta.

Does anyone know if carrying the flag will be faster than throwing it repeatedly? I absolutely cannot stand the repetition of the announcer when people do that crap + it's just retarded in general.
