It looks damn good if you ask me. I don't remember ever being awwed by Halo 3's lighting (except the E3 trailer). I love the shadows that show up on Kat's armor.

Maybe you weren't awed because of some of the lighting conditions were fairly ordinary when in some cases they were spectacular. I'll agree that some levels were a very different quality than others. But the engine stands as having some of the best lighting thus far. I'm not just talking about the HDR and LDR in action I'm talking about all the other snazzy effects like the bloom and fog. One article mentioned that in Reach the ground lights up your character...that was in Halo 3 as well.

The resolution of Halo 3 was ass and it totally ruined the game. The hand animated characters look horrible as well. And the faces...butt ugly. The weapons could have used more fancier multitexturing and could have looked much better. The lighting on the other hand was heavenly.

So far it seems like they are fixing exactly all that.

Full Res, Motion Cap Animation, better human face modeling, and weapons look to be remodeled and retextured.

Actually, it was three Elites and a Spartan.

Ah, of course, my bad :D Been too long since I've played campaign, must do something about it...

Still though, their strength is comparable to those of a Spartan, so I'd say my point is still valid.

There are more polygons now but the characters still have poopface.

One would hope so but we can't really judge from a cutscene. Cutscene could be mo-capped but the gameplay could still use rigid looking animations. We haven't seen too much of the weapons but I suppose the Tom Morello pics demonstrate some improvement. The cutscene clearly uses a film grain filter over the whole thing to make it look more realistic somewhat and we don't know if that will be present during gameplay at this point.

I don't trust the resolution of the cutscene...not one bit.

I hope you're right but I'll remain skeptical.

Nevermind graphics...we still know nothing about this game. The promise of more 4P splitscreen Halo fun has me excited but at this point I know nothing about this game and so I shouldn't be as interested as I am.

Is it going to be something like Modern Warfare mixed with Halo? Upgrading of weapons/armor/abilities? Are we going to be seeing more than 16 players this time? 32 maybe?

There is no indication of them fixing the resolution. Digital Foundry just pointed out that the trailer is in-engine but obviously rendered offline which means that it is rendered either on different hardware at a higuer res, or rendered on the 360 at 1080p at an incredibly low framerate and then the frames are pieced together.

What is sad is that shit might as well just be CG. In-engine is the fucking same as every other CG cutscene there, just with better lighting. Remember the Uncharted 2 cutscenes, and how they are in-engine? It is the same.

So you think that was running on one 360 on real time? :lol No chance.

Check this video, and read the info to see how the technique works, and find out why Bungie is being deceiving their fans again.

Every studio does the same shit* But unlike you I believe Bungie when they say they are using a new Engine, so I am confident the game will "look" like what the trailer showed.

*how do you think all these games pull/do crazy things in their cutscenes. That shit wouldnt work in gameplay.

Had a few days to sit on my reaction to this, it basically hasn't changed, I'm pretty disappointed. Feels a lot like Bungie resting on their laurels, they've come out and said that ODST was the nebulous game that wasn't quite a spin-off or a whole new thing, but Reach goes firmly in the 'new thing' category. Then they reveal it with carbon copy Halo reveal trailer, and expect everyone to go ape shit because "OMG MORE SPARTANS!!".

I guess they don't really need to do more than that, everything they release on this game over the next 12 months is going to be poured over regardless of how derivative it is. I suppose I was just hoping that as possibly their final Halo game, or as the game that's going to launch them into independence, they'd want to show that they can do more than just riff on what they've done before. Maybe the game will do that, but revealing the game this way doesn't really give me a lot of confidence.

I do believe it is a new engine. It is just that it won't look anywhere near as good as what we have been shown. The trailer was pre-rendered, period. That is the end of it.

Yeah Halo 4 is going to be an MMO platformer were you ALL play female unicorns in MJOLNIR armor and fight covenant mushrooms.

Seriously.... it is Halo... it is an FPS... sometimes I worry about some of you. Also play Myth!!!

buh buh teh new AA & AF technique... I have been saying this for a while now, but you can't help people getting hyped up.
godhandiscen said:
Oh really? offline rendering IS NOT REAL TIME.
godhandiscen said:
The day is not here yet. Wait for the game to reach the announcement trailer graphics, then I will have nothing to say.
godhandiscen said:
Even a regular video capture card will get rid of some AA. The cut scenes in the final game will not look that crisp. People are setting themselves for dissapointment, again.
godhandiscen said:
Gameplay Evolution is the only thing I can always trust Bungie with. Also, you don't know a flying fuck about what happened in E306 "Mr. Killzone Avatar". Bungie never showed CG for Halo 3. It is just that the engine showed in the announcement trailer saw a massive downgrade. I am still a skeptic about gameplay matching these graphics, however, spouting BS is not something I will do.
godhandiscen said:
Yeah, the confirmation is a few pages back. It is a cutscene though, so Anti Aliasing and other layers of effects that improve the image quality are applied.
godhandiscen said:
That .25 will be way more evolution than the majority of FPS's achieve during multiple generations when it comes to gameplay. Therefore, I don't give shit if the game looks bad, it will still be my favorite game.
It is just that people forget so easily. It is freaking annoying to see how little it takes to convince you guys after the previous dissapointment.
godhandiscen said:
:lol
There is NO way the actual gameplay is going to look like that at all. I just watched online in HD, the IQ was the stuff of dreams. I wish I had never seen this, the end result will be some jaggy mess.
godhandiscen said:
Nope. Chances are, the actual cutscenes on the 360 won't even look that clean.
godhandiscen said:
No, not fair, it can only go up from the Beta. I am just hoping Bungie doesn't pull another "Halo 3 E306 reveal announcement."
godhandiscen said:
Ok, so I want to be the first skeptic here. How big of a downgrade do you think the actual gameplay graphics will be in terms of quality from what we just saw today?

I am not saying that what we saw today were gameplay graphics, but how much worse than this will the gameplay graphics look like? There is no chance in hell than gameplay graphics will look this good (which is sad because this vid wasn't that impressive). What do you guys think?
godhandiscen said:
Yeah, it seems they are using more polys in the models this time around. However, it could just mean that their mesh streaming tech improved and that the are replacing the models on the go before the cut scenes. Sorry, I just don't want to get my hopes up.
godhandiscen said:
You are not zooming enough. Come on. Also, are both from cutscenes?
godhandiscen said:
There is no way to tell if there is an improvement in the graphics. I don't see how you guys can tell.

Hey, dude. I know you're just trying your darnedest to make sure all the internet people you care so deeply about aren't disappointed once the game comes out. If I could I'd give you an Internet Hero award to carry with you wherever you go. Thing is I can't, so you may as well stop this campaign of yours. Let the people believe what they want to believe, I can assure you they won't get angry with you for letting them get their hopes up.

When did I say it shouldn't be an FPS? There are lots of ways to avoid being overly derivative without losing the core of the experience, all I'm saying is they are off to a bad start with a reveal trailer which feels a bit like they still had the old storyboards lying around.

Like? Examples?

And you base all this on a trailer?

rofl, this is why I don't post here very much any more, what part of "Off to a bad start" reads to you like I've made a full assessment of the final product?

I can think of a couple of examples but I can tell this is one of those conversations where I say one thing, then you quote my post before you've actually read all of it, and life's a bit too short to be honest. So instead I'll just leave you to your thread and suggest that you try and think of some yourself.

In the future maybe it would be best to write a constructive post (even if it is a negative one) instead of "I saw the trailer of some Spartans walking around and I wish Bungie would introduce some new innovative gameplay features" classic internet non-comment. At least a lot of people are fighting over the graphics... that is something tangible right now. The gameplay isn't.

The "I am outa here" defense also works.

Mhm. Internt. It's ALMOST an internet hero award, but not quite. It's like a deformed version of it. I figured Eazy should be the one to actually give Handiscen the real award. You know, outta respect.

I'm with godhandiscen on this one, seriously. The game is not going to look like it does in that cutscene, and you guys need to come to terms with this sooner rather than later.

As am I. But if he was going to change anyone's minds he already did so 10 attempts ago and the subsequent attempts just serve to annoy everyone else. And as a rule of thumb, constantly trying to convince people they should be as hyped as they are (about any aspect of a game) should just be avoided in all situations.

I'm with them on this too.

Although I think perhaps the game might look like that in one part, there's no way in hell a 360 can maintain that consistently. Shit will set on fire inside that box. For fucks sake the 360 can barely run Halo 3 at an acceptable framerate.

Yeah and newer versions of old games NEVER run better. Fact!

On the same hardware. Newer versions NEVER do. FACT!

Its why PC gaming is expensive. Newer faster stuff needed all the time. To accommodate larger worlds more expansive gameplay and of course killer gfx.

But I doubt anyone expects it to look exactly like the trailer.

Games never* do.

*without the use of a lot of filters/trickery.

But the other side is on the other extreme which is that the game will look pretty much exactly like Halo 3 (in so many words) which isn't true either.

I said earlier, as long as the game is a NOTICEABLE improvement on Halo 3 while keeping Halo 3's feature set, I don't see how anyone can be disappointed in that.

Halo 3 does a lot that people simply take for granted because it's Halo. Bungie's problem is that they set their own bar too high.

I'd love to use other games as an example, but I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, I'm just saying. Halo does more feature wise than any other CONSOLE shooter out there, so having graphics that appear inferior to the competition is a small compromise for me personally.

I'd rather Halo 3 AS IS, than Halo 3 that looks like Killzone 2, but all of Halo 3's great features stripped away as a result of the graphical upgrade.

But again, that's just me. I'm sure others feel the opposite.

Oh, it'll definitely be an improvement, but I find Bungie's use of "real-time, in-engine!" to be very disingenuous, both historically and here.

Really? I didnt think it looked spectacular at all. Im sure they're capable of throwing a game with those visuals.

if folks still want to believe that the in-game gfxs will look like that trailer even after it has been dissected by people that know better then there is zero chance that any random gaffer will be able to convince them otherwise.

Did they say real-time?

I'm pretty sure they only alluded to in-engine. Which is what ALL game trailers use.

An engine creating a pre-rendered optimal conditions cut-scene will ALWAYS produce a much better result than real-time in game results.

But I figured that would be obvious to 99% of GAF.

But hey who knows, MAYBE, juuuuuuuust maybe, Bungie will go out with an absolute surprise bang and shock the shit out of everyone by getting Halo Reach to ACTUALLY look like that.

.....and simultaneously cause 10 million 360s to red ring around the world.

Can anyone make me a nice little reach avatar for me? As you can see from my current one, image manipulation is not a strongpoint of mine :).

Overall I'm really looking forward to the beta in April / May and more so the new single player campaign.

Stuff I hope for:

Scalable co-op enabled campaign that works well solo and up to 6 players. This could be super hard to balance though.

New multiplayer that breaks from the current Halo MP mold

Matchmaking enabled firefight mode.

I also hope that this is not the one stop for the engine / game design and we see an ODST scale expansion a year or so down the line.
