IIRC, members of the UNSC have a neural implant installed (See the end of "Keyes" level in Halo CE and pretty much every Halo book written). Maybe a language support layer is installed in the implants for those members that have a high probability of coming in direct contact with the Covenant?
Interesting. Very good find. It would seem that the device would have to receive constant updates in order to have the information necessary to translate new language on top of inflections and emotion. The neural implants would have a theoretical ceiling though, and it seems they were canonically designed specifically for storing and displaying information, not directly controlling the senses to change the peripheral lobe's response to audio information.

\I just wrote about 2 more paragraphs explain how it would have to work scientifically given the anatomy of the brain, but realized it was in vain. I'll just stick to this theory for now because it sort of works on a good enough basis.

Interesting topic though.

I have a feeling they will be speaking Sangheili. If the game is going down the dark and gritty road as the trailer seems to imply, it would only make sense to make the elites more alien. Also, given the setting (first covenant attack, mass confusion/chaos) the game could only benefit from making the enemy more enigmatic and mysterious.
I hope they go back to speaking unintelligible sangheili, and I will just pretend I don't know they are just being mislead by the Prophets. I don't care what anyone says, I've always hated what Bungie did to the elites after Halo 1. You don't mess with perfection. They were amazing and fearful adversaries and should have stayed enemies with us, and maybe Bungie could've introduced another new friendly alien race (that tried to kill us at first in the beginning).

So, do we think the gameplay screenshots will drop the same time as the gameplay info this January? Then we can really see what Reach is going to look like.
Be wary of screenshots though. They fooled us all when H3 was coming out. With H3, they expand the image to 4x its original resolution then apply an AA filter, so it looks absolutely awesome as a screenshot (look at Ascendant Justice's galleries for proof).

I'm going to take the screenshots only as a way to look at how it will look with a grain of salt. HD gameplay videos will be my bar that I judge on.

Edit: Fooled isn't necessarily the right word to use in the first sentence. I'm glad they did it to make the Screenshots look better. :D

You're not wrong there. Otherwise the screenshot mode wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

When was the first time we got gameplay videos for Halo 3? The Beta?

That always bother me too. The Elites went from speaking shouting, "Wort", "Wort", "Wort" to speaking perfect english. Never made sense.

The first look we got was the leaked MS early beta video of Last Resort. Prior to that, there was no looking at the gameplay - it was all screenshots of various things.

Bungie's intent was to show it to everyone with the release of the beta. Let's hope we don't have to wait until May to see gameplay.

Heh, I remember that... now that whistling is stuck in my head. Here's hoping for another leaked vid like that!

I wonder if the sites will be able to put up gameplay videos come January's embargo. They probably weren't for Halo 3 because it was earlier in the development cycle. I'd like to see gameplay of the game. Much more-so than more screens or cinematics.

The ending, it is all about that ending.

Actually it was some MS employee's son playing the Halo 3 Alpha (Pimps at Sea) and uploading videos of him playing on Snowbound and Valhalla.

Then it was the Last Resort Beta leak, then the Epitaph Beta leak, then Bungie's official Halo 3 Beta gameplay montage from the perspective of an MS employee who works under the Windows division.

Ahh, those were the days.

I still cannot believe "journalists" decided Microsoft made a mistake in the original Press Release and took the decision to change the number from III to II.

:lol

Still, this is good. I just wish the Bungie folk had decided to be more clear on the subject. Kinda disappointed that clarification had to come from Microsoft's PR arm instead of Mr Urk the Refuter.

Well, there you have it. I can't wait to see what the differences are (since they differ from what the books have described).
My guesses: health bar (duh), slower in regards to walking/running, not able to jump as high (though higher than an ODST). I'm only expecting tweaks.

While that is a possibility, it would be - as someone already said - a waste of space. It will feel more tacked on just like the rank 'progression' added into the H3 multiplayer that in reality added nothing except brag wars (which is nice in its own way).

I'm more okay with fewer guns, but HIGHLY customizable from thereon in. Have 5-6 gun 'classes' and have a ton of upgrades. Then the add the 'perks' and armor customization and awesomeness will ensue.

What I'm saying is that people are starting to get all excited about the possibility of buying and upgrading weapons, command posts where you can shop acting like a hub area, and all sorts of completely unlikely stuff to explain what you might do with credits.

This is Halo and Bungie we're talking about. I'd love to see something completely innovative and new, but it's more likely they'll do what they've done for the last 10 years: create a game that is an evolution of its predecessor, not a revolution.

If you do earn credits in the game, it's likely they're earned in a similar way to points when campaign scoring is enabled, and that you can "spend" those credits by unlocking armor, doing nothing more than giving the player bragging rights.

I love their explanation:

It's clear that this armor appears nowhere in the Halo: Reach cinema. Because of this, TeamXbox actually responded to comments on the posting and "fixed" the title and text of the announcement shortly after it was posted. However, we have since received requests from Microsoft PR to correct our adjustments to the original press release. When contacted for confirmation, Microsoft PR responded that the original press release didn't have any "typos," but declined further comment. All other requests for an explanation have been denied.

They get a press release from the publisher, and "fix" what they think is a (rather important) typo in the interest of the fans, thereby confusing the hell out of everyone by reporting something incorrectly. Bravo, dudez.

I hope we get a Betalicious v2. I must have watched that montage 100 times :lol

Remember the "leaked" video with the Twisted Nerve remix? That video was the best by far.

I don't know how many press releases you get directly from PR departments, but typos are common.

But "fixing" a typo, especially a very important one, without bothering to verify it's accuracy? Either check before publishing, or publish and note it stands out as something odd. But changing press releases without verification is dumb, lazy journalism.

Either way, this is an AWESOME implication. I'm super duper stoked about this actually. This is a nice reveal!
