Handing in late essays

This is for a distance ed course (essays are mailed in to the prof). It was due 3 weeks ago, but the prof said that there was no marks off for late hand-ins. Problem is, the term is basically over and i think i might be fucked.

How good of an excuse is "it was lost in the mail"? Is there any way to verify it? If it actually DID get lost int he mail, how would i know about it?

There's really no way to tell, but in that circumstance, It would still be your fault for not having any sort of verification to back up your claims. I suppose you can try it, but I wouldn't call it the strongest of excuses.

Personally, what I did when I had a term paper due was the following: I had 3 essays due for one class -- no late papers accepted. So I e-mailed the professor the day of, told her I couldn't make it to class because of work (which was true); at that point, I hadn't written the essays, though. She had given me the okay to send the files via e-mail, so I took advantage of it. Next thing early morning I e-mail her the "essays", but I purposely corrupted them. The first email I sent contained the corrupted files, the second email I sent said something along the lines of "I'm sorry, the first email I sent you gave me an error message concerning the first few attachments. Here are the files you requested in Word format."

The catch to the last one is that all the files were corrupted anyhow. I normally don't do underhanded things like this -- but working one full-time job and one part-time to pay for bills, meanwhile cramming in 16 units (so I can graduate by June), teaching hip hop, and acting as TA for my dance class really cuts into study/homework time.

Anyway, end result: Teacher e-mails me back saying the the files she has don't open properly, and that if I can send them again. I e-mail her a version of the files with the essays still in progress; for her it'll appear that at least part of the file got through, and the rest of it still corrupted -- a noticeable change but still not the complete file. She'll either recommend that I take it in the next day or try another e-mail. I assume the former... but anyway, it buys you more time to write the essay during the bluff. It's bad, I know, but this world leaves me no choice!!! *_*
