Hands-On With AMD FSR 4 - It Looks... Great?

Interesting! It looks great and very similar to PSSR! No wonder the Demo is running on a Sony's game and on one of the games that best shows the improvements from FSR 3.1. Digital Foundry compared FSR 3.1 with PSSR running on the same game and the results are very similar. Good stuff

:lollipop_grinning:(y)

Much improved, less ghosting, better fine detail handling, increased image stability, and better transparency. Looks really good do far.

Nvidia probably caught a hint that AMD was gonna catch up. Thats why aggressive pricing.

Anyways, this looks usable. No pathtracing but 4k gaming is possible on AMD hardware now.

Frame gen is not really exciting, just a good quality upscaler is all that is needed.

Ratchet and Clank has the worst implementation of FSR3.1, of any game.
So seeing FSR4 fixing so many issues and making such a huge jump, bodes very well for the tech.

With Sony and AMD working in partnership now, I'd expect steady improvement going forwards.

To be honest, given Sony's expertise with optical sensors I'd imagine they'd have a lot of technical/scientific people already researching this area, but probably lacked the sort of massive computational resources to iterate rapidly on the AI side - which I'd imagine AMD do have... so likely a very potent alliance for improving this sort of tech.

Camera companies don't rely on AI.

Those are smartphone companies. They wouldn't make acceptable photos otherwise.

Till now, FSR performance mode was so bad I would describe it as simply unplayable. AMD shouldn't have included it as the image quality was very unfavourable when compared to its competitors. Great to see a significant improvement. As long as AMD can stay a single generation behind NVidia then they can remain somewhat competitive.

This looks really good, but it pisses me off no device I might buy this year will be able to use it. I'm not going to buy a discrete RDNA4 card and all the APUs are stuck with 3.5.

For fuck's sake, they're finally releasing Strix Halo that sounds fantastic and they come with RDNA3.5 cores. What a waste.
AMD is crazy. Instead of showing off high quality direct feed or screenshots they have youtubers doing funky offscreen comparisons.
AMD caught wind of what Nvidia was going to do, how it was going to market the 50 series and decided to postpone the announcement because the presentation they prepared would make them look like idiots.

That, and the fact that probably they did not want to announce the price of the 7090/7090xt before knowing the power and positioning of the cards they will directly compete with (4070/4070ti?).

They ended up looking ridiculous, but it was probably better than a fucked up launch.

This is good - it can sit alongside PSSR underneath DLSS as the AI also-rans. Previously it wasn't good enough to warrant using over simply running at a lower resolution and bilinear scaling up to output res.

Based on which benchmarks?
Here is and AMD saying result are low, not final driver

Here 4080 super result

nope, 9070Xt is faster than 4080super
Sorry, I meant 5070/5070ti. The rumors want the 9070xt to, at best, trade blows with the 4080super, so we'll see.

Performance means nothing without a price. And a price means nothing without performance (which is the situation we see with Nvidia).

It is also the game where FSR 3 struggled the most.

PS
Did it also apply to quality mode?

AyyyMD Unboxed lol
Isn't it peculiar, that allegedly pro-AMD biased reviewer has exactly 0 "very early preview", while glorious PF, the hyper of anything that comes from NV's unhinged marketing, including, but not limited to "8k gaming with 3090", "3080 is 2 times faster than 2080", keeps getting green scheisse for review before anyone else?

I don't doubt that PF does it just by incident, but isn't it a bit... awkward?

Price rumos is too good, i don't believe in this price
479 for 4080 Super performance is something I would believe if we were in 2016, but that ship has sailed.

Even if it was possible, AMD would still end up pricing it $50 cheaper than the Nvidia equivalent, which will probably be the 5070ti.
For that price it's going to be between the 5070 and 5070ti.

I'm sure its fine.
I'm pretty sure we are decades behind the curve with AMD. Clearly, FSR 4 has none of these goodies, that DLSS 4 can boast:

1) neurotic radiance - AMD is still using raster radiance
2) terminator - AMD is still on CNN and BBC, years behind DLSS4 terminators
3) AI reconstruction - AMD is again behind: still on semi-defusal iterators

The only issue I have with FSR4 is that no matter how good it might be compared with FSR3, AMD are just so far behind NVIDIA with AI upscaling that I would personally find it near impossible to consider ever buying one of their GPUs. NVIDIA have a 5 year head start on AI upscaling and several years on ray-tracing too over AMD. It makes AMD GPUs second class products in my eyes. Fine for consoles but I would not want one in my gaming PC, even if they were much cheaper.

not bad. But we need to see the raytracing performance as well to come to a proper judgement on the cards. Upscaling and PT are too big to ignore now

While I agree, I'm not too concerned. I think Sony realizes how far behind AMD is hence their recent announced partnership. Sony will not pay the green tax to have an Nvidia GPU in the PS6. They need AMD to catch up. I think it will happen sooner than we think now that they're pooling their resources together.

My hopes with udna to be strong enough in raster so I don't need to buy a 6000 series. Raster, upscalling and vram is all I need. I don't care about ray tracing.

What do you mean? They aren't biased /s

Incredible how incompetent these outlets are for upscaling analysis. Almost have to wait for Digital Foundry
HU is good. Tim has some of the best content and knowledge when it comes to those upscaling tech.
