Hannity backs out of speaking engagement because private jet not good enough

Less than a week before he was scheduled to speak to students at Washington University in St. Louis, ABC Radio Networks host and FOX News Channel host Sean Hannity -- who regularly casts himself as an "average American" while attacking Senator John Kerry's "elitist lifestyle" -- reportedly canceled the appearance because flight arrangements were not made to his liking.

According to an October 6 article in the Washington University magazine Student Life, Hannity "reportedly asked that the media not be informed of his motivations for the decision." The students who had coordinated the event -- who had raised $20,000 to bring Hannity to their campus -- described what happened:

Hannity cited personal reasons for his cancellation, said law student Ruth Hollander after speaking with the right-wing pundit over the phone yesterday. Hannity, Hollander said, requested a private jet to fly him to St. Louis for the speech, but then rejected "several" different jets offered by a private donor. He told Hollander about a "bad experience" with the prominent company that had manufactured all the jets offered for his trip.

"[Hannity's agent] said he thought we should say that because of the short time frame involved, it didn't work out," said Hollander. "I said I didn't think that was the truth, and...I really felt we had met all of our commitments and we were going to be honest when asked."

When Hollander and fellow law student Melinda Gorman failed to locate a jet manufactured by another company, they offered Hannity a first-class ticket on a commercial flight. He refused.

"He was very forceful on the phone," said Hollander. "It was hard to get a word in edgewise with him. He was interrupting me a lot."

Hannity's identity as an "average American" is an essential ingredient of his on-air persona. From ABC Radio Networks' The Sean Hannity Show:

* On August 4, Hannity ridiculed Kerry and Senator John Edwards for appearing at a Wendy's restaurant "for a light lunch with us common people."
* Also on August 4, while attacking environmental activist Robert Kennedy Jr.'s recent criticism of the Bush administration's environmental policy, Hannity claimed that "corporate America" creates "products that make life easier and better for all of us-- the average American out there, those of us that don't have the benefit of his [Kennedy's] lifestyle."
* On July 14, Hannity mocked Kerry for skeet shooting, saying "You know, there's no average Joe person that I know that shoots clay plates in the air. I just -- you know, I just, it's a lifestyle that I don't live."
* On September 29, Hannity mocked Kerry for windsurfing, suggesting that "carpenters, electricians, regular folks" don't windsurf and asserting that "I know a lot about carpenters and electricians and plumbers, and I'm gonna tell you something right now that the ones I knew and worked with in New England ... were too busy working to find a little spare time to head off to Nantucket for the weekend and start windsurfing."

On the October 6 broadcast of The Sean Hannity Show, Hannity attempted to explain the reason for his cancellation of the Washington University event, saying it was something "we didn't have enough time to fully and completely vet out and put together":

HANNITY: We had tried to do something similar for this Friday in St. Louis, and I know there was some press about it, and I want to apologize to all of you that were supporting our coming there to counter Michael Moore. It's just something that we didn't have enough time to fully and completely vet out and put together, and it went out frankly -- was advertised regrettably, prematurely, and it had not been solidified on our part in any way, shape, manner or form. ... I know some of you were looking forward to us coming and we just couldn't put it together. And I hope you understand because literally, just the credential-gathering process is a couple of hours of our day. We've gotta travel, we've got radio preparations we've gotta do, we got the three-hour show we're gonna do from St. Louis. We've gotta get on over, get the proper credentials so that we can get into the TV coverage for that night, obviously this Friday night -- and we just weren't able to pull it together for a lot of different reasons. And I just want to say I'm sorry and I'm gonna find a way to make it up to our St. Louis radio audience when I can get a spare moment.

According to his bio at Hannity.com, his official website, "Hannity grew up in Franklin Square, Long Island in the shadows of Manhattan. ... Sean Hannity is the hottest commodity in talk radio."

i despise this tool. i cannot to stand to watch his show, and listen to him spout off all the daily talking points.

his, "normal people don't shoot clays," is utterly ridiculous. i went shooting a few weeks ago with my friends, and guess what hannity, we're not billionares.

"Despise" is the perfect word to describe my feeling for him. I honestly don't know if there's a person on this earth that I hate more.

What an asshat. Those kids probably worked their damnedest to raise the money and fly him to speak, and he rejects it because he can't sit on anything but a private jet not built by a specific company? What a fucktard.

...but then rejected "several" different jets offered by a private donor. He told Hollander about a "bad experience" with the prominent company that had manufactured all the jets offered for his trip.

He sounds more like a wuss..."Ooooh, I rode on a Lear jet once and it was bumpy and scary."

That doesn't explain why first class on an airliner wasn't good enough, though.

Heh, funny story:

Michael Moore is coming to UVSC (Utah Valley State College, one of the most conservative schools, in the most conservative county, in the most conservative state) on Oct. 20 (sold out, unfortunately, I couldn't get tickets) and the school's donors and administration forced the student government to "bring a balance" to the school by brining a conservative speaker to talk. Guess who?

That's right, Mr. Asshat, Sean Hannity. (also sold out, couldn't get tickets. Would've gone just to boo him) His speaking salary? $100,000. One hundred thousand dollars! Moore only cost them $40,000 and people were having a fit! But oh, Mr. Asshat decided to speak pro bono. Can't let them poor Christian kids have their minds washed by evil libruls! So he took the speaking engagement for the free flight (ironically, sardonically, moronically- on a school donor's private jet, that belongs to the republican gubernatorial candidate. Must have been the right kind of jet).

He really is the scum of the earth. And he tries to play himself up as an "everyman" while taking hundred thousand dollar speaking engagements?

:lol at the responses in this thread.

Instead of UBl, Saddam, Kim Jong Ill, Scott Peterson, that bully that stole your lunch money in fourth grade you people hate Sean Hannity.

Hilarious.

I love this place. There is nowhere like it anywhere.

No comment on the actual issue of Sean Hannity's stunning hypocrisy?

I don't even know who this guy is. But asking something like this is just asking for trouble.

I like how people feel they need to voice their outright hatred for Hannity in this thread. Wow, could it be because he's right-sided...and you aren't?

Seriously, just say "I'm a democrat" and we get it. You don't have to use bold to get your republican-hatred across.

Asking any college student not to reveal a juicy secret is like dangling a Twinkie in front of Star Jones - somebody's feelings are going to get hurt.

Gee, maybe because some of us do respect "right-wingers" in the media, but not complete asses (you know who they are) who do nothing but misinform the masses?

You could not possibly think that he is so hated ONLY because of his political leanings, can you? That's like saying someone who hates Michael Moore is only doing it because he's more liberal than they are.

Actually, you can hate Hannity and not be a democrat. I'm a moderate and I can't stand him.

Because Hannity really is an ass. I know, I have to hear him EVERY DAY. And he's literally done the same show for three hours every day for the past couple of months. Saying the exact same things OVER and OVER and OVER....we all wonder if he remembers how to do an actual show after the elections are over. And what the hell he'll have to complain about if Bush wins.

Come on. Yeah you can try and say that people hate him for other reasons, which I don't doubt there are a few who do, but what is primarily boils down to is his right-bias.

Let's not pretend it's actually because he shunned a few kids apparently. :p

Or, could it be because he's a SPOILED HYPOCRITE? The "average citizen" has never and will never fly on a private jet...and this rich bitch wants to PICK the plane.

You're an idiot if you think people hate Hannity simply because they're a democrat.

Yeah, because most people hate Hannity and Moore both. Seeing as how the American populace is so non-bias and all that. Today let's pretend that people don't hate because of differing views, it'll be a ton of fun!

I mean wow, it couldn't have anything to do with his views and how hardcore conservative his show is? Please someone at least admit that that's part of the reason. Be honest.

Oh, no, I already knew about Hannity's ways a long time ago. I've heard stories from folks who have dealt with him directly. He's very much about himself, even though he tries to make it seem like he just a down home kind of guy.

An ass is an ass, regardless of who he's going to vote for in November.

I don't mind bias of any kind, by the way. I can handle it, but at least make your bias entertaining. Hannity's bias is grating.

And here's a shocker for you: I'm not a Michael Moore fan either. A loudmouth ass is a loudmouth ass.

Part of the reason, yes. But you said the only reason people dislike him is because he was conservative. People dislike him because he's a massively hypocritical conservative who (like most other prominent Conservative talk-show personalities) tailor their message to a specific audience who want to hear their very own views regurgitated to them. He, unlike some of his companions who firmly believe in these things themselves, is about as far from an average, working-class American as you can get, yet he still pretends to be one. And furthermore he criticizes prominent liberals who lead a similar lifestyle.

Almost all of the right-wing radio nutjobs/FOX pundits are crazed in some way.

Rush was hooked on the Hillbilly Heroin and goes through wives like a stoner through box of twinkies.
Hannity is an amazingly vain (never goes anywhere public w/o the make-up), two-faced freak. And he's incredibly stupid to boot.
O'Reilly took anger management classes from the same guy that taught the Incredible Hulk how to control his temper. Habitual liar.
Coulter is just *wacked* in the head. Lying, distorting, and doing everything she can to bring back the times of McCarthism. I think she enjoys being hated, because she hates herself.
Ingraham is a freakin' psycho. All fours and barking like a dog in a DC nightclub after hitting up some wacky drugs? Pulling a gun on a boyfriend? Fun times.

Boortz and Medved don't have enough of a big profile for someone to rummage through their garbage.

I do probably dislike the Hannitizer a lot more than the other pundits. Bill O'Reilly can at least be funny when he loses his cool, Coulter provides weekly laughs from her outrageous comments, and Rush is very easy to impersonate while drinking heavily and likes to say really stupid crap. Hannity, though, ugh. He's dim and not creative, which means no good one-liners to laugh at, doesn't get angry that much (he just interrupts people), and, for the most part, doesn't appear to live the life of hypocritcal debauchery that some of the others do-he's just a smug asshole.

It's because he's clinically insane. "Right-sided" would be a step to the left for him.

Maybe there is such hate because they see the same blind bias that exists within them.

It’s funny how similar this board is to that show, just on the other side of the argument.

Deep, man. Deep.

See, my personal thought is this: not agreeing with Hannity's views is one thing. It's whether or not I want to go and have a beer with the guy. And I wouldn't, because he comes across as an ass.

Just to keep in the radio realm, I'd probably enjoy having a beer and shooting the breeze with Rush. He at least would an entertaining conversationist I feel, even though I don't agree with much of his ideas either.

I base all decisions on whether someone's an ass by the vibe they give off. Al Franken also comes off as a whiney man, so I'm not a big fan of his either.

It's not bias, it's how you read someone. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who consider me an ass, and have no clue of my political stance.

Ya'll have fun arguing black and white, I'll be over here in the grey if you need me.

Right, so what I get from that is:

A.) People dislike him not only because he's a conservative, but because he's a hypocritical conservative. Hmm, still looks like the political bias influences this reason.

B.) Most conservative talk-show personalities are tailored to specific audiences who also happen to be conservative. Not liberal talk-show personalities however, just the conservative ones.

C.) He criticizes liberals.

Yeah wow you're right, political bias is only part of the reason.

:rolleyes

Actually, it's stuff like this that makes me hate all sides because it's all decisive rhetoric.

I want a mainstream talk host that's a moderate, dammit!

T, you claim to be a lot of things and then later your opinions prove otherwise.

I'm starting to believe you only claim to be things in an attempt to somehow make your points more relevant. :p

So what I gather from your posts in this thread is-

1) You are not going to accept anyone's explanation for why they dislike Hannity, if it doesn't fit with your view of why anyone would dislike him.

2) The only reason to dislike Hannity is if his views conflict with your own, and you're a Democrat/liberal.

Gotcha.

well, even after all the responses to tritroid, and him not accepting a SINGLE one as valid, i think it's pretty obvious that sean hannity is mr.anonymous who tritroid went down on in a drunken stupor.
