*cough* ... what?Space Age Playboy said:Tool's glory days are behind them. They take too long in between albums and their market is diluted with ho-hum APC albums.
I know, they've done really well with those albums. But a lot of people are already starting to turn on them.fallout said:They've had three full length studio albums. That's hardly a number you can derive any statistic from. Granted, the wait between Ænima and Lateralus had a lot to do with their legal battle, but shit man, the music is still great. To have such a following with such little material should say something.
I don't care if Ashlee Simpson wrote all of APC's songs, they still sound way too similar to Tool and are diluting Tool's market with mediocre releases. The fans should be anticipating the next Tool album, not getting bored with APC.Also, the APC comment ... again, what? Maynard has said on several occasions that he has very little to do with the actual music writing. From what I remember, the other guys write music, he listens, he pens. As gorgeous as Maynard's words are, I doubt that he takes so long with them that it slows down the overall creative process. If anything, the side projects of Danny, Adam and Justin are more "damning" in that regard.
I like Tool and I think MJK is a good singer. Since this thread was turning to shit anyway I thought I might as well talk about Tool.If you don't like the band, fine, but don't go spewing off bullshit about it for the sake of being a dick.
Yeah ... just like they turned on them before Lateralus was released and bought half a million copies in the first week. That sure did suck. Seriously, do you have any proof (other than yourself) of people turning on them?Space Age Playboy said:I know, they've done really well with those albums. ... I don't think you're getting it. Even if APC wasn't around, we'd still be getting Tool albums at the same rate. If you want to blame somebody, go blame Pygmy Love Circus or something. And besides, it's not like APC is forcing Tool fans to listen to them. I'd even be willing to be that you'll never see them tour together!I don't care if Ashlee Simpson wrote all of APC's songs, they still sound way too similar to Tool and are diluting Tool's market with mediocre releases. Yes, let's help the thread by trolling. That always works.I like Tool and I think MJK is a good singer. Since this thread was turning to shit anyway I thought I might as well talk about Tool.
Actually, my comment was directed at a Tool interview I once saw. I think he said something along the lines of: "I'm probably the least musically talented person in this band."Eminem said:yeah, all Maynard does with APC is write the lyrics and sing them. Billy writes literally all of the music, from what we've been told.
Not any real proof and I could be wrong, but I have heard people talking about Tool/Maynard unfavorably when they used to be big fans.fallout said:Yeah ... just like they turned on them before Lateralus was released and bought half a million copies in the first week. You're the one who's not getting it. It would help if Tool put out albums a little more often, but the fans can wait. That's not the problem.... I don't think you're getting it. You can tell them he didn't actually find Jesus. Well, he did ... but I think it was just some Spanish dude.Space Age Playboy said:Not any real proof and I could be wrong, but I have heard people talking about Tool/Maynard unfavorably when they used to be big fans.
Yes, Tool's bastard stepchild that consists of their former guitar tech and their lead singer. It's a good thing that other bands don't do this whole side project thing, or we'd have a venerable crisis on our hands. I can see it now, people running in the streets screaming: "HOLY SHIT! THERE'S TOO MUCH MUSIC!"You're the one who's not getting it. It would help if Tool put out albums a little more often, but the fans can wait. That's not the problem.
The problem is that Tool's retarded bastard stepchild is getting airplay in between Tool albums. They're not Tool but they sound kind of like Tool, only not as good. This means the sound is getting overexposed and the fans will get bored too quickly. A diluted market is bad for business.
Yeah, who was that Dimebag guy anyway? Or you know, Clapton? What about Tom Morello? Shit man, I can name a guitarist from pretty much any genre that has a voice. And that's not because I'm some music elitist, I just happen to listen to music. The voice is the most recognizable part of any song for most people.
I don't think it's so much them sharing Maynard as it is Maynard jumping around. Think about it, he's one lucky guy. He gets to play with two very talented bands with *gasp* ... different sounds! Two bands sharing a lead singer isn't a good idea.
Judith could easily have been a Tool song, Disposition could easily have been an APC song. All bands have a range of moods, intensity, etc that they use for their songs.Kabuki Waq said:are those people deaf? What APC song sounds like another tool song?
What they're going to do is stop giving a shit about the real band much quicker than they would have otherwise. That's a bad thing. Sounds get played out, side projects hasten the process.fallout said:Yes, Tool's bastard stepchild that consists of their former guitar tech and their lead singer. Poor talent management by the record label is the real problem.Honestly, I like APC. If you want to compare it to Tool, I think Tool's better. But then again, I'll probably say that for most bands. If I didn't like APC, I wouldn't listen to it (crazy theory, eh?). I highly doubt that APC was every supposed to be anything huge, but they had some good songs and people took a liking to it and now they've done more. Heh, what's your solution? Maynard sit on his ass and do nothing while the rest of the band do their own things?
Congratulations on having a better trained ear than the average listener.Yeah, who was that Dimebag guy anyway? Or you know, Clapton? What about Tom Morello? Not enough difference IMO. APC will hurt Tool in the long run.I don't think it's so much them sharing Maynard as it is Maynard jumping around. Think about it, he's one lucky guy. He gets to play with two very talented bands with *gasp* ... different sounds!
Oh! Oh! And Triad! Oh wait no ... that was an instrumental.Space Age Playboy said:Judith could easily have been a Tool song, Disposition could easily have been an APC song. All bands have a range of moods, intensity, etc that they use for their songs.
No, side projects generally help the overall creative nature of a band. At least, they should. It gives the members a chance to work with other artists and explore different areas. I consider Down to be an amazing metal band, but I wouldn't say they sound anything like COC or Pantera. What they're going to do is stop giving a shit about the real band much quicker than they would have otherwise. That's a bad thing. Sounds get played out, side projects hasten the process.
I ... am confused by this one. Seriously, I don't quite know what you're getting at.Poor talent management by the record label is the real problem.
Different tuning, diifferent chord progressions, different writing. Hell, if you want to talk about the vocal dissimilarities between Tool and APC, when was the last time you heard harmony in a Tool song? It doesn't take a trained ear to hear that.Congratulations on having a better trained ear than the average listener.
I think you're getting your videogame marketing and music marketing sludged together in some ugly mess of thought. Bands can coexist ... I've never had a problem of owning too much good music. Not enough difference IMO. APC will hurt Tool in the long run.
Maynard was born to a Baptist family and grew up with an older sister in Ravenna, Ohio. Maynard attended Brown Jr. High and then Ravenna High School through the 10th grade until he moved to Michigan.
