Has any recent Anime surpassed Trigun/Cowboy Bebop?

Cowboy Bebop is super overrated. 8/10 max. Space Dandy was way more entertaining and did some pretty interesting episodes.

Fate/Zero > Every anime ever.

You have garbage taste if you don't at least like Trigun (not really, but I really like Trigun). It's the only anime I've ever liked consistently. Though I don't like most anime. Bebop is a solid second though.

Sword art online was decent until like episode 11 or so when it got anime stupid. I tried giving bleach a shot (the ghost fighting one right) because it had the same English voice actor as vash.

From a personal standpoint here's what I've rated as being either better than, level with, or in touching distance of Cowboy Bebop:

Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo)
Place Promised in our Early Days (Movie)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Movie)
Log Horizon
Kill la Kill
Shirobako
One Punch Man
Giovanni's Island (Movie)
Patema Inverted (Movie)
Eden of the East
Amagi Brilliant Park
Arslan Senki

I would personally put both Baby Steps and Hajime no Ippo: Rising on there too but it's sports anime and I just have a deep love of good examples of the genre.

Now....Bebop will always remain untouchable to me as one of the first anime I saw...but any of those titles is just as watchable and enjoyable in my eyes.

Lol @ Trigun being in the same sentence as cowboy bebop
Attack on Titan. People are going to seeth at me saying so, but I could talk to people who barely understood what anime was about that show. Absolutely insane popularity.
Yo, I'm done.

I feel off the hype train HARD, but you are right it's insanely popular; though I do wonder how the bad movies and long wait for s2 if going to affect it going forward

I actually completely forgot about Attack on Titan. Like, it didn't even enter my head until I saw it brought up. Take that as you will.

Thank you so much for actually answering my question!

Not being immersed in anime, it's difficult to find what is actually good but as a casual fan you can find plenty of good ones with little effort sampling from a top anime list like this:

http://myanimelist.net/topanime.php

there are a lot of shows there that I don't like but most of the great ones are there as well in the top 100

edit: some of the most popular ones are on netflix which makes it simple to sample

I hear the manga is still a best seller. I bet the big budget American film (whenever that goes gold) is going to be a heavy hitter.

IIRC AoT was so popular it was getting an English 3DS game before the anime even started being dubbed. Like, holy hell.

Trigun was one of the worst animes I've ever seen, expect for the flashback episode when he was a kid on the spaceship. Mainsteram shonens like Naruto far surpassed it in characters, music, visuals, premise, etc.

Id be with the OP in terms of late 90s/early 2000s was my favorite period of anime with Eva, Bebop, Utena, Outlaw Star, Berserk etc. Just love the art style back then compared to modern stuff.

But I mean in recent years we got stuff like Steins Gate, Full metal alchemist brotherhood, gurren lagann, Madoka Magica etc. You will always get great stuff irrespective of the time period.

Samurai 7? It's 2004, so ymmv on it being 'recent.' Also, Death Note until
L dies
.

Also, Evangelion is overrated and not that great.
So. Wrong. That opinion is one of those things where popular belief is completely false, like how people say Scott Tenorman Must Die is one of the best SP episodes.

Oh yeah, Outlaw Star was pretty good as well.

I would also suggest One Punch Man and Space Dandy.

Have you also seen Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?

Oh right. Outlaw Star is a classic as is Big O.

Thanks for answering my question.

The answer to your question was clearly implied by my post, as you know perfectly well; you're just being deliberately obtuse.

Yes, tons of anime since the 90s is better than Trigun, and some is at least in the same league as Bebop (save for the music probably). I would consider all of these to fall into that category: Death Note, FMA: Brotherhood, Gankutsuou, Princess Tutu, Madoka Magica, Steins;gate, Sword Art Online (Ep 1-14 ONLY), FLCL.

I'm limiting myself to series, not movies. If we're talking movies, I could easily list a lot more examples.

All I remember about Trigun was it being advertised on every anime DVD I bought in the early to mid 2000s.

I'm in the minority here of saying I loved Trigun, and I do, in fact, consider it a better anime than Cowboy Bebop (but I still love CB too!)

For newer stuff, I'd say Kill La Kill was good. Going through the JoJo series now -- and a bunch of people seem to suggest One Punch Man lately.

Some of the hyperbole is in this thread is too much too handle.

OP the best anime (and tv show in general) in recent years is called Ping Pong. Watch it. It's marvelous

I'm just going to politely say no. I knew my taste didn't align with most fans when Attack on Titan became the Golden standard of quality for modern anime.

Someone that like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop would probably enjoy Space Dandy. And One Punch Man has been fun, most recently.

There has been plenty but nostalgia is a hell of a drug. Anime like Trigun is not without its flaws but here we are people acting Attack On titan is the worst thing ever lol.

imo Attack on Titan, Knights of Sidonia, One Punch man, HSD Kenichi etc. are all really good.

Preach! Evangelion is shit, the anime is insufferable. The only redeeming quality of the show are clashes between the Eva and the Angels. The story is so dumb and convoluted. Watch a Gundam series instead

If you want actual recommendations... here's a list of anime since Cowboy Bebop that I think are pretty great:

Space Dandy
Ping Pong
Hunter x Hunter
One Punch Man
Hajime no Ippo
Gintama
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Monster
Haikyuu
Dennou Coil
Gurren Lagann
Eureka Seven
Katanagatari
FLCL
Fullmetal Alchemist
Kyousougiga
Fate/Zero
Baccano!
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Steins;Gate

It wasn't a heavy hitter, but if we're going to bring up shows like Ping Pong I will say that episode 7 of Aku no Hana is the best anime anything I have watched in the last decade. That was rotoscope perfection. The emotion, haven't seen that in any other anime.

Trigun is another one of those gateway anime that people find awesome at first and then realize there's way better stuff out there once they actually start watching anime. Personally, I'd say FMA: Brotherhood was great outside of the first few episodes. OPM has been brilliant. New JoJo too.

Space Dandy is fantastic though

I love Space Dandy, but it did have a few meh episodes mixed in too.

Edit: Thanks for reminding me of Steins;Gate there.

Madoka is excellent, Space Dandy is excellent, One Punch Man is excellent. Attack on Titan is good but isn't as good at subverting genre tropes as OPM; OPM really turns them on their head whereas AoT just reproduces them very exactly and thinks that's criticism.

I also loved Food Wars but that's just me and it was flawed as hell.

Attack on Titan. People are going to seeth at me saying so, but I could talk to people who barely understood what anime was about that show. Absolutely insane popularity.

It gained its popularity because it had:
- Two excellent first episodes.
- An awesome opening song.

Unfortunately, everything else was garbage. The story progressed at a snail's pace, and it run out of steam quickly. Entire episodes were mostly Eren screaming.

Edit: Regarding Trigun, I really fail to see why people think it's good at all. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't memorable either. Both Cowboy Bebop, and Evangelion are much better than Trigun.

IMO, Gurren Lagann is the show you are looking for / missed out on. It's a landmark series, and it does action / wonder / fantasy ("manliness") on that level that draws you in and makes you remember what you love about anime. It was amazing when it came out, it's amazing now. If you haven't seen it you're in for a treat.

I prefer Samurai Champloo over Cowboy Bebop honestly

Same here. Cowboy Bebop is a handful of great episodes mixed with a bunch of alright or flat out boring ones. Emotional resonance wise the difference isn't enormous, humor, not even close. To add to the mix you got the goat soundtrack (RIP Nujabes)

Legit one of my top 5 shows

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex
One Punch Man
Black Lagoon
Hunter x Hunter

These should scratch the mainstream action itch. Some more niche shows are
Space Brothers
Monster
Ping Pong
Mushishi

It depends OP. How old are you?

Serious answer: Not really IMO. I thought Death Note was pretty good, but the other stuff being mentioned hasn't done much for me.

I think that there is probably an effect similar to SNL where whatever was going on when you were younger is elevated in your mind.

In the many, many years since either of those two shows aired I can think of tons of anime that have been better. There is more to anime than nostalgia era Toonami, OP.

It gained its popularity because it had:

I enjoy AoT, used to keep up with the manga, but those first two episodes are GODLIKE. Pure Kaiju horror with an excellent sense of dreading hopelessness. If the series had maintained that tone, it would probably be one my favorite series of all time. Because those first two episodes ARE some of my favorite anime episodes ever. Nothing can take that away from me.

Remember watching series as it was extremely popular at the time, and I never really understood the hype. It did very little for me overall. I think I enjoyed Code Gease a lot more at the time.

One Punch Man is the only one I've in a long while. There was this series called "Gankutsuou/count of monte cristo" which I thought was really good with a pretty unique art style.

I would say ep 10 of Ping Pong is the best anime episode of all time and one of the most satysfing 20 minutes of any visual medium. Yuasa direction to present the contrast between Peco and Kazama , until the later admit his defeat is nothing less than brilliant. I had a grin ear to ear watching it. That shit touched me like few things do.

I'll vouch for this one. It wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near as good as it was.

There's not a whole lot I'd put on Bebop level.

But if you want something fucking awesome from after the late '90s that almost nobody in here has mentioned yet, go watch the actual best anime series of the 2000s, Monster.

jH4zQEP.jpg

Ok, maybe it's cheating a little bit since the manga is from the '90s, but the anime is from 2004-05.

Some other great stuff from the 2000s: Fullmetal Alchemist (both series, though I'd say Brotherhood is the superior of the two, despite its breezing through some of the early material), Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Gurren Lagann, Eureka seveN (YMMV), Honey and Clover (if you're into that sorta thing), Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (if you're into that sorta thing), Dennou Coil (Japanese only still, for some stupid reason), just for starters.

Oh, and if you REALLY want a solid mindfuck of the bizarrest sort, check out Kaiba. It's fucking excellent. And also still unlicensed for the US, I believe.

EDIT: Oh good, in the time that I was writing this post, a couple more people mentioned Monster.

Why would anyone name Trigun as a Top Anime? It was a decent Manga, that became a shit Anime.

Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are both God-Tier tough.

Actually here is the best top 3 personal list I can give.

1. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Like the title says, its Bizarre but it's now my top series of all time. There are 3 parts now (4 coming soon) and each one is completely different from the last. My personal favorite parts are 2, 4 and 7. I love them all though.
[Link to watch it]
*don't start with Stardust, watch the first 2 parts (season 1)

2. Gakkou Gurashi(School-Live)
Now....I know what you're thinking, I was recommend this by a friend and originally stopped on the first episode because I thought it was moe trash.....I was wrong. I can't say much other than to power through the first episode until the 19min mark and then you're good. Only 12 episodes and it's a very solid series
[Link to watch it]

3. One Punch Man
Not much to say that probably hang been said, it's a very enjoyable series about the most OP man in the universe. It has great action and comedy.

I didn't like Monster. The main protagonist was great. The main antagonist (and the driver of the entire plot) was so dumb.

Top Bottom
