Has any recent Anime surpassed Trigun/Cowboy Bebop?

I enjoy AoT, used to keep up with the manga, but those first two episodes are GODLIKE. Pure Kaiju horror with an excellent sense of dreading hopelessness. If the series had maintained that tone, it would probably be one my favorite series of all time. Because those first two episodes ARE some of my favorite anime episodes ever. Nothing can take that away from me.

Exactly! I hate the AoT anime because it has such wasted potential. They could have mantained the tone of the first two episodes by making it shorter. They probably could have told the same story in half the episodes, and it could have been much better.

OP, FYI but One Punch Man is probably appearing a lot because it's the flavour of the season.
It's probably the first anime in a while (maybe since Death Note?) that non-anime watchers can enjoy. IMO it deserves every recommendation it gets.

SPACE BROTHERS
Hunter x Hunter
Space Dandy(some episodes are meh but when it's good, it's DAMN good)
Ping Pong
Hajime no Ippo
Gurren Lagann
Fate/Zero
JoJo's Bizzare Adventure
Shirobako
Chihayafuru
Steins;Gate
Baccano
FMA Brotherhood
Gunbuster(80's but I don't care)

Here's a list I just came up with without thinking much, with stuff that is at least as good as Trigun/Bebop or whatever you have nostalgia for.

I was expecting more post-2000 bias here. Anyway, you probably won't go wrong with the triple Ms.

Mononoke, Mushishi, Monster.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is better than Trigun on all possible fronts.

It definitely is the flavor of the season, but I'd argue for good reason. When I saw the preview episode I knew the shit was inevitable, it was simply too good. Not surprised one bit that it has blown up, and hit mainstream casual watchers.

Flowers Of Evil, easily. All about young uncertainty in life, guilt, shame, angst, with some of the best acting thanks to the rotoscoping technique. It's weird and creepy, so if Paranoia Agent was something you loved, this one is a no brainer.

I miss a good ol violent, edgy and crazy anime.

I want more like Berzerk, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Mad Bull, Golden Boy, Samurai Champloo... those are some of my favorites.

OP try Samurai Champloo I think the same guys that did Cowboy Bebop did it, and also it's good. The dub is fine just like Bebop.

I wish, but it sold so awfully that they canned the second season. Which sucks because I liked the creepy vibe the less detailled rotoscoping gave. As I said earlier though, episode 7 is a winner.

Attack on Titan is somewhat in this vein, at least more so than most recent things that I can think of, though its pacing is horrendous, especially in anime form. And Eren is a terrible main protagonist (seemingly on purpose).

I didn't even know there was going to be more. Thought it was self-contained and complete.

There have been a lot of good anime over the past few years, in the end it all comes down to how enjoyable they are.

I prefer Samurai Champloo over Cowboy Bebop honestly

Likewise.
But Cowboy Bebop is still good.

Trigun anime is meh, he manga ver. is....hit or miss depending on if you can figure out wtf is going on or not :P

IMHO Gurren Lagann falls off a cliff after
Kamina
dies.

There are so many anime that have surpassed Bebop (never saw Trigun so I cant say), but Id easily have

Guilty Crown
BLast of Tempest
Seraph of the End
M3
Free!

as anime that easily surpassed the inferior storytelling and drama that one finds in Bebop. All five are much better stories, more visually and musically pleasing (no bland instrumental ED's here), and flawless character designs and development.

This may sound rude, but this gave me a really good laugh. Made me feel better. Thank you.

The simple answer is yes. The extended answer is, of course, it depends on what sort of thing you're looking for. For action-oriented anime I would suggest Sword of the Stranger first.

It's probably the first anime in a while (maybe since Death Note?) that non-anime watchers can enjoy. IMO it deserves every recommendation it gets.

One Punch Man is popular among the Toonami sort of crowd, but there's plenty of anime I would show to normal people completely unfamiliar with anime before it (and certainly before Death Note), taking into account their genre preferences of course. Emma: A Victorian Romance, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Tatami Galaxy, Eccentric Family - these are series with mainstream appeal that aren't rooted in action.

No, there's a bunch of more story in the manga. They'd already completed filming for a portion of it but it had to be cancelled. It gets a lot darker.
Ok, but that's usual that there's more in the manga and more plot. It ended well, I don't want any more.

Are you kidding? That's the point the show became watchable for me! I'd tried to watch it years earlier but dropped it, stated my reasons to a friend and he told me to just try again but watch a few more episodes.

I've tried multiple times, the series just loses all of its life for me after that happens.

Eccentric Family

This had skipped my mind entirely. A really overlooked GEM of a series! Really hard to describe because it has so much....so much light, and so much sadness too. It can flick a switch and send you from giggling to a little tear in the corner of your eye.

Yes, OP, watch it! If you love the rag tag nature of Bebop then Eccentric Family will also leave you feeling something similar.

Trigun has its moments but I wouldn't put it on the level of Cowboy Bebop. And no nothing recently is in that league in my opinion.

There's been plenty. Cowboy Bebop is a great entry point for anime, but even a lot of fans would admit that the creators' follow up (Samurai Champloo) is a little better. I won't make that argument here though.

As much I like Bebop, there have been anime that I've watched over the past few years that have left a larger impression on me than Bebop ever did.

Mushishi
Baccano
Ping Pong
Gurren Lagann
FLCL
Chihayafuru
Hyouka
Aku No Hana
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
Ghost in the Shell: SAC and 2nd Gig
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Wolf's Rain
Natsume Book of Friends
Durarara
Black Lagoon

I can go further but that list will do just fine. I don't think a description is needed since I'm confident in the quality of all those shows. Doesn't matter what genre they're in or what subject matter they're dealing with, they're are produced well and one single episode is indicative of what you're in for.

One thing though.

Mushishi is a fucking masterpiece. It's a work of art that something like Bebop can never hope to achieve. It should be required viewing for anyone even with the slightest interest in anime. :)

Wolf's Rain

As a reviewer back in the day for one of the UK sites this and Heat Guy J made me quit. 4 solid episodes of recap in the first half of the show made me table flip. The animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack is cool, but that recap was enough for me to just go "Nope, not doing this any more".

BLACK LAGOON, MOTHERFUCKERS!

*seethes*

AoT is pure, hot garbage.

It's really not.

It's a good, exciting show with some pacing problems and a lame protagonist.

If you wanna talk about garbage, we can have a Sword Art Online topic.

I'd applaud this but the office is a little quiet right now.

I would say Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was really good, it was actually faithful to the manga.

But more importantly, Gurren Lagaan.

Just who the hell do you think I am!!

Yeah, I saw it when Adultswim aired it all those years ago here in the US and they skipped those 4 recaps. I have never seen them and I own the series. The second half of that series is really good, really weird, and pretty damn interesting. It's been awhile since I've seen an anime with that kind of aesthetic and the air of impending tragedy that show managed to instill. I want to say it's one of a kind but my knowledge is pretty limited. I've only really been following anime for like a few years.
