Has it been confirmed if the PSP is going to get a screen downgrade?

From Sharp's screen to the Samsung one?

I know that it was touched upon in another thread, but I'd like some confirmation (if there is some).

I've heard rumors that only the standard packs screen was changed to a samsung. A lot of people seem to believe that the Value packs still have a Sharp screen. Nothing is confirmed though.

What we need to do is compare an older unit and one of the new shipment units, the samsung screens are not as bright.

PS. I tried to PM you but your inbox is full.

No - whoever produces the screen, the specifications remain the same. Even Deadmeat laughed at that silly rumour.

Well,Sony Corp. recently bought out a Korean(or Taiwanese) company that manufactures LCD screens,so it looks likely that future PSP LCD screens would be supplied by them.

A PSP with a shitty screen would be like having your penis chopped off. I mean, you're still physically able to go on, but you'd be robbed of your most prized possession.

While the Sharp screen is great, the red ghosting in movies has been more noticeable lately. When people move there's a quick blur on the faces like a dark shadow or something. It's not noticeable for the most part, but when there's fast or sudden moves it's obvious.

I think basically the red temperature is too high on the Sharp screens. That makes greys look warm instead of cool, which some people seem to dig, and it's pretty good for skin colour in movies, but it sucks for games, especially the Rally-X minigame in Ridge Racers.

I have that problem with my LCD monitor and my LCD TV when there really fast action on the screen theres like a PS2 Motion blur kind of effect which gets annoying and both of my screens are from 2 different makes. One is a Sharp 46" LCD TV and the other is my Sony LCD 19" I think the Liquid crystal can't take the rapid change of colors and it ghosts the image. It does get annoying but over time you get acustomed to it.

My PSP I never got a chance to play video on before my friends dog destroyed it! :'(

Only the very first batch of PSP's were Sharp. IE the ones people stood outside at 5AM to sell on eBay and sold out.

Everything else is Samsung. No offence to Samsung, but they are inferior. I guess Sharp LCD's are Japanese (???) made and Samsung is Korean (???) made. Sure it is the same specifications, but these pics show what a difference it makes. Coincidently the Samsung are cheaper. It makes sense, you make the great first impression to calm the stockholders and media, then you cheap out.

That is a REALLY NASTY picture on those Samsung screens. Thing is, most people aren't going to realize how bad the picture is because they won't have any comparison.

Those screens are not PSP screens. They are some Samsung monitor if I recall it correct.

Really? I smell BS for this whole thing.

Someone needs to buy a PSP soon and crack that shit open and check for the good of science (not going to be me!).

Yes they even pointed out wich model it was. If that technology is going to be used in the next PSP screens I don't know. But it wasn't a PSP screen anyway.

Has anyone actually opened one of the later batch of PSPs to confirm if the screeen is Samsung? It really seems weird that they would switch the screens so quickly. That picture above could be just a freak accident with one of the screens having a different calibration / color temperature, or just plain faked.

*edit* ah, I see. Well, doesn't surprise me. The rumor about the 'screen downgrade' just wouldn't die...

Seeing as how downgraded LCD won't make any impact on games, I fully expect this to happen. Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up switching the whole damn thing with a 16bit color LCD instead of the current 24bit one. :lol

Samsung is known for cheap LCD/HDTV that look awful and break often.

Well it wouldn't be if we'd get some answers. Hense the thread, hopefully we don't have to bring this shit up again.

Hmmm, I think Lumines, for example, runs in 24 bit color ;)

If they did indeed change the screen it would be a fucking shame, its one of the main selling points. That screen is hypnotic, and a shittier screen would just mar the raw sexiness that is the PSP.

I can't find anyone in the café with a launch PSP. Here is a pic of Sharp LCD

This guy here has a Samsung LCD PSP bought the week after launch.

:lol :lol :lol

but seriously, the sexiness of the screen comes up as a big point in many bullet lists... it would suck to downgrade it

You should make a thread about this!

Is stupidity a bannable offense?

Hey, you missed THIS classic in another thread!

I like to play the video game of the movie I'm watching. It is really convinient because there are outlets/holes on every aisle for the post-movie vaccuuming. I also have the PSone with Sony 5" LCD. I got some funny looks while playing Final Fantasy VII during Spirits Within. Nobody seemed to care when I played Resident Evil during Resident Evil. I found Alone in the Dark better than the movie.

WTF? That's the second PSP horror story I've heard of.

How the fuck did it happen?

I was at my girlfriends house and a friend and myself were waiting around for her to get changed and do her thing so we could go to the movies. Well he had his dog there so her older sister could take care of it for a couple of hours, and well I left it on a coffee table, went to the door, remembered the PSP was on the table came back to find the damn dog bit right into the screen :'(. But all's not lost he offered to pay for a new one :D

I might as well dissect this thing. how can I find out the make of the screen?

Damn that blows, at least you won't be PSP-less for too long though :)

Open up the case, and remove the top casing (that covers the screen). The LCD itself should say sharp on teh bottom left hand corner of the screen (it is normally covered up by the PSP casing).

I got it January 15th, I ordered it on Jan 3rd so I guess it's not old, but in before the second shipment of units I think.

January 3rd would have been like...the 4th shipment of units, going by when jp.playstation.com put them up for preorder.

I think this screen downgrade rumor is bullshit, at least for now. They may change vendors but I bet the screens won't look too much different...

sharp doesn't offer any kind of dead pixel warranty, while samsung guarantees 0 dead pixels on their screens, so I think the change wouldn't be that bad a thing.

Also if the samsung screen doesn't have the red ghosting problem it would be nice.

Did Sony not go on record and say that they have not and will not change the PSP screens? Or was that another bs rumour too? It would be quite a nice surprise if the early adopters ended up with better hardware in the end :lol
