No- not like how it impacts movies/shows for me.
Gaming- while a amazing story is great, my primary focus is gameplay and i can move on and roll my eyes. Now if its infused into the gameplay or the character directly-atleast for me i have not seen yet, maybe then id change my answer.

Movies- i will stop if its too much. Completely takes me out of it.
Unfortunately, my fav movies of all time have been greatly impacted by this and completely kills hype on current and future projects. (Star Wars)

I try to pretend the woke cringe doesn't exist as much as I can. I'm to the point where I've lost track of what the various acronyms even mean. Mostly because I don't care. You want to be like that, fine, be like that, just quit trying to tell me I have to accept it, and quit bragging about it like it's some kind of a wholesome badge of honor. I can't help but wonder, when was it that we slipped into this alternate reality? Because it seems like I got up one morning and suddenly everything was different.

As for games, well, I just buy games that look fun. If it's injected with too much woke stuff, I try to cringe my way through it. If that becomes impossible, then I just delete the game and forget about it.

I'm tired of hearing about people who "identify" as something they are not. How about I "identify" as a 70 year old retired guy? Give me my social security check and let me sit at home and enjoy my non-woke life instead of going to a miserable job every day. Oh, I can't do that? Uh-huh. Then "they" shouldn't be allowed to pull that "I identify as...." crap either.

It depends...

If Metroid was to come out Today, people would've called it Woke because strong woman protagonist or something...

We've come to a point where everything has to be part of that Woke vs Anti Woke war and I'm a bit tired of it...

If the "Political message" make sense in the core of the story, then I have no issues with it.
(Movie example: I enjoyed Barbie, of course it was going to be a feminist movie... it's flipping barbie, it makes sense.)

But if it's too obvious and too loud in a context that doesn't make sense... yeah I'll skip.

Yes, and more so lately. I see leftist identity politics corrupting not just society, individuals, and the economy in general, but also movies, books, and games. So to me, it's about much more than just games. But as far as games go, yes, I will avoid products that are clearly contaminated with the woke mind virus.

I should clarify, though, by "infected by woke," I mean more than just a female character who isn't attractive. Some people on the "anti-woke" side seem to get triggered by the smallest thing. If the rest of the game is good, I'm not going to be put off by some degree of nonsense. It's a matter of degree. For instance, I'm not going to cross Fable off my list just because the female protagonist isn't attractive. I will pass on the game, though, if I find out identity politics has infected significant portions of the story or dialog.

I can't stand the pandering, the masculinisation of women, the 'loud and proud' appeal to statistically insignificant demographics. This is particularly egregious when applied suddenly to existing franchises. Its tough to accept, especially considering most franchises became what they are thanks to the fans. Fans that typically like things the way they are. If developers wish to gamble the continued success of their franchise by feminising, alphabetising and diversifying then good luck to them. Personally, I will no longer support developers that wish to irrevocably damage its properties in pursuance of the non-entity known as the 'modern audience'.

Somewhere along the way developers, in their avarice, forgot that games don't have to be for everyone. That's the real crux of the matter. Not everyone has to be represented in everything. The most damning part of all of this is that most new IPs designed to appeal to that 'modern audience' flop left and right. Is anyone really that surprised when women don't show up for games like Forspoken? Imagine being so arrogant that you make a game that appeals primarily to people that don't actually play games, in a genre that skews heavily towards men. Would anyone here, even advocates, bet their own money on such an endeavour? Likely not. Games used to be made for the people that actually play them, not imaginary groups of people that are generally not interested. The market ultimately decides the outcome. Developers, publishers and platform holders will be forced to learn that basic immutable truth the hard way.

Yes, I’ll be happy to skip titles that actively push for a certain agenda just as I wouldn’t buy a game that actively tries to push you towards a certain religion, for example.

Both as a personal stance and because I don’t want my kids to be exposed to that kind of influence until they’re big enough to form their own opinions. Same as with any other entertainment.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
Well, no. Kojima is clearly and obviously making a political statement and commentary in those games. He just does in such a way that it doesn't get in the way of the story being told. But he is absolutely trying to influence the mindset of the gamers who are playing his games.

https://www.theguardian.com/technol...ojima-interview-metal-gear-solid-phantom-pain

Kojima is a socialist, and would be considered woke by many.

Nope. Old school progressives/socialists are very different from the modern woke.

I personally have no problems with most political messaging, it doesn't really spoil the entertainment factor. It's something I agree or not agree with, but doesn't get in the way of the story. But the woke stuff that pushes the message there are no genders, uses pronouns or doesn't want to offend the easily offended by showing male and female body types, that erases white males, that rewrites history and defies common sense, that annoys the hell out of me. All that stuff is never an integral part of the story, it's always a message being pushed by people I despise. Absolutely hate it.

A Fucking Idiot
These companies forget just how many other people there are competing for my money. I will not be preached or pandered to and I am all too happy to take my money elsewhere and that is exactly what I have done. I went from spending THOUDANDS per year on my gaming hobby to spending under $100 in the last 2 calender years combined.

Reading this whole thread reminds me of this clip:

(you figure it out)

My stance is that talent in gaming writing is something which is missing. The whole inclusion and all that shit is just meaningless to how quality title is going to be. I think main problem in gaming is when gaming went mainstream and also when it went on the phones. The lust for cash in gaming industry is never ending as well as its their thirst for your time. Which creates Ubishit games in single player and live service Destiny type shit in multiplayer. Like even CoD is doing those stupid battle passes and shit like that.

Good game takes time, strong leadership and competent writers. Sadly almost never are those 3 thing in place.

And if you take a look behing, almost all good games are written by just a few people. This shit aint for amateurs. You have to have special type of talent to be able to entertain player for hours and hours.

Like one of the best games ever is just black and latin people (San Andreas), you can say that was actually life like and that's why its good. And that's the point, the raw view on someone's life gets nowadays wrapped in blanket, you are hero by default, no way to the top, you are already there. Feels like Saints Row 4 was ahead of time with the writing.

I think that its not a political agenda, that writers got extremely soft and writing got sterilized, westernized. If anything this way of doing things have nothing to do liberal ideals, more like thirst for higher profits and bigger margins. Also there is so much draught when it comes to creativity writing stories, it almost feels like first deployment of AI was to gaming companies, so it will spit out cookie cutter stories about nothing, just to make certain demographic of terminally online people to feel good about themselves for few moments.

Everything is so soft, so soy, with thousands of disclaimers and so on and the problem is that people who actually has some strong ideas, will never achieve mainstream success, because making game is like back then making musical record, you are simply told by those overlords that it wouldn't be popular, so `no, go back to drawing board, come up with something for mainstream audience`. I think there is a good parallel with music industry, how it was in the 80's that's where the gaming is today.

Simply industry creates a space where creativity isn't the main point of making game, profits are. I just don't see how SweetBaby boogeyman fits into this. I think its blow out of proportions. I don't see that we are in 2014 again. That era of hardcore feminist is over thankfully. All of them are designed nowadays as terfs anyway lmao

It did/does. The first game I actively chose to avoid was Last of Us 2. I'm primarily on playstation so don't have an xbox but a lot of their games from the showcase would have made my "fuck this" list... namely Fable with that hideous fkn main character.

No.

It’s all about implementation, not concept.

It’d be dumb to pass over a game, simply because it has political content in it.

If a game does it badly though, then I won’t buy it.

I sold Spider-man 2 because it was fucking boring, in large part due to poor implementation of political and social messaging. But it was the boring part that was important.
It's not dumb, its just that you don't have the same values and determination to adhere to a line that you set that WILL NOT be crossed. It's essentially fuck around and find out but for studios... we're all free to spend our money how we want. If studios want to force feed political agendas and bullshit ideologies down my throat... well they can't... cause i'm not buying it lol. There's going to be a huge resurgence from the eastern developers because they don't do this kind of thing. I think my last three game purchases were from Korean/Japanese devs. Games are solid a.f. so there's plenty for everyone I guess...

Soured me on wanting to purchase TLoU 2. I didn't get the game because of how polarizing it was.
Was it political agenda or rather simply a bd written piece? When I heard the story from that 4chan leak, I had zero desire to play it. Mainly because of dead of one of the main character, other shit didn't bother me, as much as it does not make sense to have that sort of people in desolate world.

Yeah. Never got Spider-Man 2 cause of it. Not as interested in Flintlock: Siege of dawn as I was after hearing about sweet baby inc, but might get it to hold me over until black myth.

I think it had more to do with the leak of that one image of the sex scene. I saw that and thought this is not for me. That and the death of a main character.

Absolutely yes. It’s not too hard to boycott though, as I don’t like games made by American studios in general.

If it happens to a series I still enjoy, like FarCry, and somehow the game is not ruined by the woke ideology, I will buy it second hand and sell it again asap.

Not really. I just roll my eyes at obvious virtue-signaling moments in games, like all the woke crap in Spider-Man 2 (such as the riveting gameplay as deaf girl).

Only games I'm on the fence about, or might get when they're cheaper. It turns my decision to a no.
I think Flintlock and South of Midnight look good, but I know both have that SBI stank on it, so I may just put those off until I get more free months of GamePass.
I don't plan to get Alan Wake 2 cause of it. Even if I eventually get around to completing the first one.

No, I'm mostly oblivious to it. As opposed to being affected by a game being shit, which does correlate with SBI involvement so it's impossible to ignore
I think you hit the nail on the head that most games affected by this are usually shit anyway.

Stellar Blade disagrees. I don't think anyone has issues with female protagonists. I think it's pretty clear which games studios are pulling too hard the other way because they often release tons of politically driven "studio documentaries" that focus on lgbt staff members and all sorts of other cringe shit to dog whistle fake virtue (naughty dog, insomniac, ubisoft, bioware.) For me i could care less about race or sex of main character if the game is good then i'm all in. But when identity politics comes into play that's where I draw a HARD line.

I avoid all weird political agenda driven games already. Didnt take SBI or anything like that to do it.

But in the past 5+ year they've made it easy for me. Anytime I see cover art like this, I know exactly what kind of direction the game is going with characters and plot. Easy avoid.

Whatever that political content may be - left wing, right wing, centre ground.... whatever.

It's always about the implementation. Great storytellers and great creatives can introduce strong political commentary in a way that gets their point across AND fits the story and characters well.

Oka, but that's not the point I was making at all.

You claimed that games should not have political content of any kind if it seeks to influence the attitudes of gamers to politics. I pointed out that Kojima did exactly that in his games.

Again: politics in games is fine - if it's done well.

A perfect example of this is the wokeness in videogames. When it’s fairly obviously present in a videogame and if your totally against any wokness has it affected your buying decision to support that game and developer? We can use seeetbaby inc as an example here. Have you decided that you won’t be buying games that was influenced by sweet baby inc.

I’d be lying if I said my enthusiasm to play some games that are working with this scummy company hasn’t been deflated somewhat. Are you taking a stand on these games and decided not to buy them? Is the best way to get rid of this to vote with our wallets? If these games that are completely woke but are still moving the needle and becoming successful with sales how does that even help from getting this poison out of videogames.

I’d like to see a day when videogames is just about creating the best games and it didn’t matter what was in the game. We use to have that. How do we get there if we’re still supporting the bs.

Yeah it has, I dont have a blanket ban on SBI or follow any curators that tell me what to buy or what not to buy.

But some games just give off this vibe that I cannot shake off and will not bother buying, like the new Dragon Age.

It's just all so lame and tacky. Imtiredboss.gif

If you want to make a game for a "modern audience" from the ground up predicated with a foundation of forced DEI, tokenism, ideology, identity politics etc - go right ahead and experience success or failure.
If you want to inject the above into an existing successful legacy franchise no I won't be buying.

Everyone is so exhausted of the playbook already, and it's really starting to hurt causes rather than help across more than the spectrum of video games.
we just want to be accepted>we want to be celebrated>we want to change everything we don't like because it doesn't jive with our worldview>you'd best put our ideology in XYZ>oh it failed? well that's because everyone's a *phobe/racist

Wait..... public transport is woke? WTF?
I flew on JetBlue the other day. I turned off the in-seat monitor, but it kept switching itself on every 10 minutes to play a pride quiz by itself, complete with pastel pinks and other extremely bright colours. I was trying to sleep.

My train to London the other day was a giant pride flag. Every conductor and ticket inspector has their pronouns pinned to their chest.

My bus to work is also a giant pride flag, 365 days a year.

If it's just a video game, why lie and say Black people helped build Japanese civilization, when they didn't.

I'm not the one bringing politics/history into it when Ubisoft themselves are saying stuff like this.
Could you link where they said that?

That seems far-fetched.

Yes.

Saint's Row was a shit show of woke propaganda and now the dev is dead. Suicide Squad, despite my disinterest in the property, I would never touch with a barge pole due to its propagandizing misandrist BS.

The new Assassin's Creed is radio-active, now. Dragon Age: Veilguard is dead to me and a host of other games that I know will be shit because they're made by talent-less hacks who think woke pandering is quality writing, who see gaming as a political platform rather than an art form and who can't even hide their vile, racist, misandrist hatred of me and the majority demographic of gamers.

I get what you are saying and you are mostly right but those shitty consultants cost a big penny and might be crucial for the success of a good game so since it's not needed why bother.
It's important for some people. For some representation and all is important for their appreciation of the game. It's annoying for some. For some it doesn't matter at all.

In the end, everybody decide which game they want to play. If a dev go full woke/political agenda, it will lose some players and gain some other.
If you really don't like a dev political view and it matters for you, don't support them. If you like their game and their political views don't matter to you, play their game.

I will still buy games that interest me and are well reviewed. “Wokeness” doesn’t bother me nearly as much as some of you here, if the game is fun I really don’t give a shit if there’s gay characters or the protagonist is female.

That said, I’m kinda out on modern AAA in general these days and have been playing a lot of games from 6th and 7th gen on emulators. I don’t care for a lot of modern game design, namely always-online everything and systems designed to keep you playing forever/as long as possible. If a game has seasons I’m out.

Lots of good stuff in the indie/“AA” space though so I pick those up pretty regularly. Boomer shooters been having a nice renaissance lately

Any sort of Sweet Baby Inc like narrative is automatic goes to my ignore list. Even if SBI involved games came out decent, I'll continue to ignore it.

Vote with my wallet.

Not really. The games people accuse of being woke on this board tend to be ones I'm not interested in anyway.

The only exceptions I can think of are Guilty Gear Strive (there was some serious drama here about Bridget and Testament) and Street Fighter 6 (Marisa is apparently woke). I bought both of those and enjoyed them just fine.

I guess I just have yet to see an example of this... barring maybe Last of Us (original) but again there wasn't anything overtly political in there, everything was tasteful and thematic. Part two however was fkn absurd, overt, and bombastic with it's ideology.

Yes!!

Started around 2015 or so but has gotten worse every year. Now I see the xbox or Sony showcase and I can unconsciously tell which games I am staying far away from. Its like your eyes and senses become trained. It's telling in the art style.
It happened to me with pen and paper AD&D and magic the gathering too! Things I have been playing since inception. Newest versions are woke fest. Again the artwork is all telling.

For games, I used to buy every AC game. I seen them bend the knee, after odyssey (it was a good game because the bullshit didn't happen until the main game was already out, same with Far Cry 5). The woke mob were pissed that the main female version protagonist (also the last actual feminine looking one) was a straight lady and wanted her gay. Ubisoft gave in and the games got more woke ever since. You even seen their stupid message before the games change to reflect it.
Valhalla outside of dumbing down the rpg aspects of this era of AC, turned the female version into a manly woman. No one really said anything but I seen it right away. Like they were in denial something was going on.

It also happened to the indie scene. Example: Wargroove a game which looked an awful lot like advanced wars/fire-emblem or something in between, was all ugly female leaders, and one black old man, and a dog, no white men or straight dudes except for cannon fodder. All the main characters had ugly faces and red dots on their noses. The pixel I could tell right away what direction the wind was blowing and it sucked. This game I would of bought and its sequel, not now, not ever.
They lost a sale. I was a guaranteed buy. Was it worth it? How many more people like me exist?

All the square jawed faces on women, the sweetbaby shit. It's a plague, reset era/reddit no fun allowed people are being catered to, and ruining our once scrappy hobby. One that I have been a part of since I was a little kid playing on an Atari 2600, inTellivision, Apple iic and then NES IBM.

Thing is I don't mind some games being about alternative lifestyles or what not. There is more than enough room for both.

I just don't think that all our classic stories and games should be retconned and race/gender/sexuality swapped, and only in one direction.
I also don't like the erasing feminitity to appeas .01% of society. Sorry women exist. Women look good and shouldn't be erased to appeal to people to make them feel better. We shouldn't turn society upside down for appeasement.
Who's bright idea was this anyway, and why do 95% of creative people fall in line?

Remember Mass Effect Andromeda? how the main character male looked attractive and exactly like the real life model, yet the female protagonsits looked different. They proved they can model 1:1, they changed it on purpose. Why? It was done for every female in that game. We see it in other games, and games to be released. Every game from the MS confrence was infected with the plague. Fable, Perfect Dark, are the most high profile from it, but infected all the same. Notice agian the male characters (all taking back seat supporting roles) are all looking good. It is intentional.

Either way, it's abundantly clear, these people don't like or want straight males (of any ethncity) to be the target audience or even buy the games. They are flat out antagonistic and say so openly now. So I say, fine I won't buy your game.
For every woke production there is a greater non woke game.

Good current non woke games - Dragons Dogma 2, Rise of Ronin, Unicorn overlord, SMT 5v, Stellar Blade, Kingdom Come 2, Robocop, Hogwarts Legacy, and many indies.

I have money for games, I buy tons (mostly on switch, and pc anymore) but have all the systems. I will buy more, but guess what, I won't buy woke games, or games from people that push the cult.
Again I have no issue with a gay character (ff16 and tlou had ones that fit the story and were fleshed out great chracters), but not done for checkboxes or to push politics.

Nah aint buying.
My backlog is 1000s deep from 4 decades of gaming. I am good to pick and choose my buying of games way more carefully.
