Has There Ever Been a GAFcon or Equivalent?

You know, drinking, game play, excessive hotel fees, etc.

I know some folks met up at E3 but I'm wondering if it would ever be feasible to have some sort of meeting of interested parties on a large scale. I know this happens with other boards, groups of fans, etc.

I also know that there are constant arguments, petty hatreds and rampant fanboyism around these parts but doesn't that fade away in person with generous amounts of alchohol, console set-ups, the surprise at how heavy that one dude is and the distraction of paid escorts?

Like in Vegas or someplace?

Or is everyone too young and/or poor and/or disinterested for that sort of thing to happen?

I mean shit, there's an incredible amount of us who check in here almost every day to begin with. Wouldn't you be willing to have a burning bonfire of love in Wichita or something?

On second note, is anyone from here going to the Penny Arcade Expo on the 28, 29th? I'll be there; we should set something up.

P.S. They have Halo 2 at this thing.

We tried doing it for NYC gaffers what like 2 years ago, but only three of us were brave enough to show our faces/available. ;)

E3 usually works because we're already there. It was a blast this year.

yea...that's what I assumed. I figured though that the whole EQ thing has us outnerded and they socialize like mofo's. I guess the whole thing is more ease of use than real community.

I missed the whole big GAF E3 meetup this year. However I did meet 2 GAF members at the convention.

We dont want Alpha to get Sera knocked up again! Chastity belts for all!

Sera wasn't even part of the forum at that point, but there was still a very large amount of us in the area.

I kind of want to go to E3 next year just to hang out with some of you guys ... that is if getting into E3 itself wasn't such a hassle with the badges and passes and grey area employment qualifications.

I've noticed that there are quite a few gaffers from edmonton and the surrounding area. I go to tokyo in 2 weeks so I'm a bit busy but I'd be up for hanging out with some of you.

I would be interested if it were in a place that is near/cheap. I only say this because I am a poor collegiate.

But, there's always GoonCon. I know lots of GAFfers that are also on the SAF.

Where would we meet? I might be interested if I don't have to go too far. Meeting up in Mexico during Spring Break would be awesome.

I say we try it again. Maybe at that GameNow expo or something.

Yeah I'm down too (Edmonton)! :)

Wasn't Pocaccho in Edmonton too..? I think he left to Toronto for a job.

The fourth annual Wing Commander meet up will be this year. I definitely recommend setting something up if you're interested. E3 might be the best.. do it the several days before or after the actual event. Otherwise it can be very difficult to get people to travel. I'll probably be at the Penny Arcade Expo (and E3).. definitely setting it up around a predefined event is best if you're not Something Awful.

yeah , pochacco was going to the U of A but he got an internship at IBM I think ? Idono he's in ontario now for 2 years or something.

It's a shame , I was hoping we could all meet up before he left ah well. Any meet up with me will have to be in september I think unless you happen to be in Tokyo for the second half of august :p

Mmmm, yes. Can't wait for next year.

We've attempted local get togethers before, and it just hasn't really happened. I've met up with forum members due to location in the past, but what it really boils down to is whether or not you're friends, or at least, share similar viewpoints. I know I took Hamburglar out with a group of friends last year, and he didn't seem to enjoy himself that much, probably because he didn't know me or my friends that well.

Ah you don't wanna meet eachother. Too many of you are douchebags and you wouldn't like eachother. There'd probably be some slapfights over sales numbers or somebody having an opinion out of the norm. >:D

Yeah, next year will be better because I'll come and you will not mistake the lesser StrikerObi for me.

Somewhere like Wichita or Kansas City would be good......right in the middle of the country so it's fair.

I'm all for it.

Honest to god, these were my thoughts before E3. I was almost dreading meeting up with the forum, especially with CK's promises to punch me in the face. Upon arriving in LA, however, things took a turn for the awesome as everyone was very nice and personable. It was really a good time, even the "silent GAF luncheon" during the first day of the show. The best part was hanging out with everyone afterwards though, and that's definately when I had the most fun.
