It's about context. Nathan Drake isn't blasting some old man's head away with a shotgun, then turning around and sticking a gun in a woman's mouth and blowing her away. Nathan Darke is a genocide machine, we all know that, and it's sort of fucked up when you think about it, but you have to go out of your way to actually put yourself in that mindset and think about it... That's not the case here. This game is specifically portraying a homicidal "I hate the world everyone needs to die" sociopath in line with Columbine or the Aurora shooters and rewarding it, wearing it proudly. That's why people think it goes too far.

Well look at people and how they play GTA V. When they get bored with story missions they start killing civillians and then cops but why? Is there a reason for it in the game?

Well with Trevor there kind of is, there you have a guy who enjoy killing civillian people. Without spoiling one of the side missions there is plenty of proof.

Then we can take infamous, yea you can go pure evil in that and totally kill civillians who has done nothing wrong. There is no context in the game for why you would do that unless you as the player WANTS to be evil and alot of people do. Its escapism and its great.

Top down shooter Manhunt, yo!

Yeah, except it's not. You're not killing unarmed civilians in Manhunt, you're set loose in a what's essentially a movieset with sociopaths who've been paid to kill you.

They're two completely different games. I wish people would stop making this flimsy comparison.

Top down shooter Manhunt, yo!

I wish people would stop comparing this to manhunt.

The trailer doesn't look like the game has anything in common with manhunt outside of intense assassination moves... which is in like every game ever. Might as well call it top down shadows of mordor.

Did you even play manhunt?

The trailer doesn't show anything about stealth, or anything about the protagonist being forced to kill people against his will. or give off any kind of running-man esque vibe... and at least in manhunt 1 you're not killing innocent civilians by any right. I never played manhunt 2, so maybe this game is just like manhunt 2.

The trailer makes it look more like top down GTA rampage side missions or top down no russian from COD.

edit: High five soultron!

I'm all for this. One of the best uses for games is working through emotions and urges that you would otherwise take out in less healthy ways. Give the troubled high school/college kids a virtual outlet, and maybe a few of them wont decide to shoot up their school. Maybe after a few hours, they wont like that feeling inside them anymore, or maybe they'll just feel better.
...sarcasm? Or legit?
What is this shit?

Nah. Manhunt offered some sort of context.

That spiel during the trailer opening made it pretty clear...this ain't that.

So again, what is this shit?
Exactly...

How many innocent civilians did you kill in Uncharted 2? Because i remember fighting pirates, war criminals and blue monster people.

I guess i must have missed the chapter in the game where Nathan Drake's main motivation was to kill ordinary people because he was pissed at the world.

Wasn't his main motivation for killing hundreds of people to discover treasure and get rich?

Did you even play manhunt?

Sure did!

It looks pretty black metal imo. Also, are the creators from Sweden or Norway? (only a point because black metal is popular/originated there). The CEO in the employee bio section is wearing a black metal shirt as well (can't make out the band).

They want to make something vulgar for their first game. That's their choice. Its just not for me.

Needs to be more Satanic and atmospheric to be very black metal I think.

Uh, no. No. No.
This is not how this should be viewed. The second someone plays this and gets their urges affirmed, this will be hell in media. I don't think watching depictions of mass violence makes someone less violent generally?

It does though. Look at #2 on this recent Cracked article. Crime is way down despite what the Jack Thompsons of the world would say. Watching mass violence may desensitize people to it, but that also would make people less prone to violence. You wont get nearly as much of a rush doing something if you seen an action star in a movie doing it 100 times.

For all the violent video games I have played, I find this really tasteless and violent without reason. GTA has an overtly comedic and non-serious tone that allows it to have some class. This however is senseless killing and really doesn't seem to have a message outside of everyone deserves to die. I can't help but feel like this will also be plastered in the media.

For those saying it will help with anger or pent up emotions, I don't see how this is the case as it isn't a constructive relief of those emotions. It appears that it would only reinforce the views that they already had with the ideology that the main character preaches.

Top down shooter Manhunt, yo!
Nah. Manhunt offered some sort of context. Sociopaths are who you're targeting, not civilians.

not edgy enough

wheres the kids?

Seriously though, I feel even talking about this is playing into their marketing ploy, so I'm uncomfortable even posting here.

It has every right to exist, but I do hope there is more to the story than "live inside the mind of a Columbine shooter!"

Not for me.

Was the trailer that bad?
Can't watch it.
I just like the idea of playing the villain. The description made it sound like it would have some meat to it.

Happy for anyone to make any kind of game they like, but I hope this never sees the light of day. I don't think a game that appears (based on the trailer) to focus purely on replicating mass murder is going to be good for gaming or gamers.

Oh another isometric Zombie gam....wait WHAT THE FUCK.

It looks great though. Someone should remake "Crusader: No Remorse" like that.

Looks like Postal gameplay but none of the atmosphere or anything else that separates Postal from this.

I'll probably still try it, though, isometric shooters are fun.

So giving a pedophile a virtual outlet will not in turn actually make him/her to go out there and commit a crime? I guess child porn is not good enough then, someone should make a game based of pedophiles, going around snatching little boys and girls, maybe that'll help...According to science
FYI rates of child sex abuse (like basically every other crime) has gone down dramatically since the rise of the Internet, so yeah, criminalizing possession has never been a good idea.

Likewise, getting back to the topic, I won't deny this game its right to exist. The fact that people are even discussing it is a good thing, since it gets people to think about if there is a line to cross where things are going too far in a video game, and all that. That discussion is a good thing.

Err hence why I asked for a scientific study somewhere on the last page >.>
I mean yes I understand both sides, but you argued science, so I'm asking for a scientific report.

Edit: And until you can prove that, I'm going to keep saying a game that is violent for the sake of violence is probably not a good thing.

Please link me to this science. As for entertainment, I believe it means not extreme violence. I may be wrong though, so I am open to you giving me scientific studies that do not only go against the idea that violent entertainment increases violent tendencies, but actually says it lowers them.
I say this moreso because I wouldn't have to argue that video games don't lead to violence but are closer to neutral while you're offering a very different stance.

This took me five minutes to find on Google
. I've seen studies like this for years, always believed in them. There was a Penn and Teller BS about violent video games as well that brings up studies finding the same thing. As far as out dumb monkey brains are concerned, urges can be filled with real things or virtual things, the urges are satiated all the same.

Err hence why I asked for a scientific study somewhere on the last page >.>

That article up there talks about one. Cracked is pretty well researched though in my experience, especially from the regular columnists.

No way this is going to release one consoles because of Microsoft and Sony probably want nothing to do it. Valve probably wouldn't want the negative press either , but then again they could allow it. I can see this getting a AO rating probably won't release in the USA or many European countries like Germany .

I just like how honest they seem to be. Hell, I bet most people who play GTA go on pointless murder sprees all the time, I know I do (I say pointless, but the point is to have fun). There is no deeper meaning to that, I just like to play it that way as do millions more. This dev's just decided to forego all pretense and make a straight-up action-murder sim. I respect that.

Hmmm

usually i love these type of games, but theres something un-easy about this, maybe they are purposely trying to misdirect us, but gameplay wise it looks fun

Legit shook at some of the reactions here, I thought most of the people would be pro-violence, at least after what I've seen so far here.

I guess they just went for violence for the sake of it. Still waiting for that murder simulator.

to be honest, the writing wasn't too bad. I'm assuming any person who would go on "genocide of the world" would have a monologue along those lines. Voice acting was pretty good to.

You mean that thing at the beginning?
It seemed like a mix of cool phrases from edgy movies, all together, just for the sake of it.

Wasn't his main motivation for killing hundreds of people to discover treasure and get rich?
I look at it the other way around, with him being motivated to find treasure and ancient cities like Shambhala, and fighting to stay alive from the other guys shooting at him who want to get there first. Drake never sets out to directly kill people, yet alone innocent ones. That's the difference.

You've never seen a trailer that didn't offer much context for the product?

I doubt the game just drops you into the street with a gun, I'm sure there's a reason this guy is pissed at the world. Also I was referring to the executions when I referenced Manhunt, yes I'm aware it's not the only game that has executions.

Was the trailer that bad?
Can't watch it.
I just like the idea of playing the villain. The description made it sound like it would have some meat to it.
Yeah, it was. Like some 11 year olds came together and wrote their dream design doc.

Playing a villain with real planning and malice aforethought would be an interesting premise for a game. The videogame version of this particular fucked-up property:

would have more depth and engagement than a simple point-and-shoot-at-civvies simulator.

Again, this ain't that.

To those who are saying, "Looks awesome!" and "Looking forward to playing this!"... I have a question for you: Would you be interested in a game where you go around raping women?

Just wondering.

Wow. So the entire point of the game is to gun down innocent by-standers? I'm not easily shocked or offended (I mean, I like Manhunt ffs) but this seems so unnecessary and tasteless. I almost hope it gets an AO rating and isn't allowed on Steam, PSN, etc...

I mean, with all the shit going down lately, who in their right mind would possibly think we need an actual mass murderer "simulator"?

I doubt the game just drops you into the street with a gun, I'm sure there's a reason this guy is pissed at the world.
I'm sure I don't give a shit. For anything beyond "controversy for it's own sake", this game will need cover in form of rock-solid context. There's no there, there.
